A Correlational Analysis Of Secondary Data For Factors Influencing Graduation From Adult Drug Court, David N. Masri Jan 2016

A Correlational Analysis Of Secondary Data For Factors Influencing Graduation From Adult Drug Court, David N. Masri

Theses and Dissertations

The proliferation of drug courts throughout the world over the last two decades presents an opportunity and a challenge. The drug court approach involves a combination of treatment and judicial supervision which is a diversion from incarceration and/or ‘traditional’ criminal justice supervision. Despite widespread study of drug courts, there is much that researchers still do not know and there is still controversy as to how and why drug courts work. This research study is an examination of secondary data from an urban, mid-Atlantic drug court to attempt to correlate factors that contribute to success (as defined by graduation) in drug …

A Longitudinal Study Of The Motivations For The Non-Medical Use Of Prescription Drugs In A National Sample Of Young Adults, Tess K. Drazdowski Jan 2016

A Longitudinal Study Of The Motivations For The Non-Medical Use Of Prescription Drugs In A National Sample Of Young Adults, Tess K. Drazdowski

Theses and Dissertations

Young adults are most at-risk for the non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) and many of its associated negative consequences. Understanding this population’s motivations for use can help to inform efforts to reduce NMUPD. Past research has been limited in scope, consisting primarily of cross-sectional work with college students focusing on prescription stimulants. The current study researched how motivations for NMUPD changed over young adulthood using three waves of data from a longitudinal, nationally representative sample of 14,990 19 to 24 year olds in the Monitoring the Future study cohorts collected between 1976 to 2013. Prescription stimulants, central nervous system …

The Role Of Procedural Justice Within Police-Citizen Contacts In Explaining Citizen Behaviors And Other Outcomes, Shana M. Mell Jan 2016

The Role Of Procedural Justice Within Police-Citizen Contacts In Explaining Citizen Behaviors And Other Outcomes, Shana M. Mell

Theses and Dissertations

American policing is shaped by an array of challenges. Police are expected to address crime and engage the community, yet police are held to higher expectations of accountability, effectiveness, and efficiency than ever before. Police legitimacy is the ability of the police to exercise their authority in the course of maintaining order, resolving conflicts, and solving problems (PERF, 2014). The procedural justice and police legitimacy literature suggest that by exhibiting procedurally just behaviors within police-citizen encounters, officers are considered legitimate by the public (PERF, 2014; Tyler, 2004, Tyler & Jackson, 2012).

This study examines procedural justice through systematic observations of …

Assessing The Match Performance Of Non-Ideal Operational Facial Images Using 3d Image Data., Rupindrani Aila Jan 2016

Assessing The Match Performance Of Non-Ideal Operational Facial Images Using 3d Image Data., Rupindrani Aila

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Biometric attributes are unique characteristics specific to an individual, which can be used in automated identification schemes. There have been considerable advancements in the field of face recognition recently, but challenges still exist. One of these challenges is pose-variation, specifically, roll, pitch, and yaw variations away from a frontal image. The goal of this problem report is to assess the improvement of facial recognition performance obtainable by commercial pose-correction software. This was done using pose-corrected images obtained in two ways: 1) non-frontal images generated and corrected using 3D facial scans (pseudo-pose-correction) and 2) the same non-frontal images corrected using FaceVACs …

Mission-Driven Communication For The Non-Profit Organization: A Case Study Of The Downtown Spokane Partnership, Lindsey Pilar Klemmer Jan 2016

Mission-Driven Communication For The Non-Profit Organization: A Case Study Of The Downtown Spokane Partnership, Lindsey Pilar Klemmer

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"The development, content, and application of mission statements have been highly researched, studied, and discussed in generic terms. This case study was designed to develop and expand understanding of the mission of Downtown Spokane Partnership, rather than to generalize beyond it. Mission-focused questions were included in a communication audit conducted for Downtown Spokane Partnership [DSP], a non-profit organization [NPO] that advocates for the development of the downtown Spokane area. The study investigated perceptual differences and similarities of the DSP mission expressed by downtown business owners and DSP constituents compared to those expressed by DSP's staff and board members. The results …

Imprisonment Inertia And Public Attitudes Toward "Truth In Sentencing", Michael M. O'Hear, Darren Wheelock Jan 2016

Imprisonment Inertia And Public Attitudes Toward "Truth In Sentencing", Michael M. O'Hear, Darren Wheelock

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

In the space of a few short years in the 1990s, forty-two states adopted truth in sentencing (“TIS”) laws, which eliminated or greatly curtailed opportunities for criminal defendants to obtain parole release from prison. In the following decade, the pendulum seemingly swung in the opposite direction, with thirty-six states adopting new early release opportunities for prisoners. However, few of these initiatives had much impact, and prison populations continued to rise. The TIS ideal remained strong. In the hope of developing a better understanding of these trends and of the prospects for more robust early release reforms in the future, the …

The Perception Of Young Drivers And Their Understanding Of Graduated Drivers Licensing, Andrew Poszich Jan 2016

The Perception Of Young Drivers And Their Understanding Of Graduated Drivers Licensing, Andrew Poszich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

New, young drivers are over three times more susceptible to crashes in their first 1,000 miles of on road driving. In order to reduce the number incident rate for teenage drivers, Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) programs have been implemented across the country. West Virginia, along with all other states, aims to further improve the effectiveness of this program. Currently, GDL effectiveness is steeply limited by the willingness of teenager drivers and their parents to comply with the laws in place. Across the country, programs are being implemented that help raise awareness of GDL and supplement some of the information already …

Regulatory Approaches For Cyber Security Of Critical Infrastructures: The Case Of Turkey, Bilge Karabacak, Sevgi Ozkan Yildirim, Nazife Baykal Jan 2016

Regulatory Approaches For Cyber Security Of Critical Infrastructures: The Case Of Turkey, Bilge Karabacak, Sevgi Ozkan Yildirim, Nazife Baykal

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Critical infrastructures are vital assets for public safety, economic welfare and/or national security of countries. Today, cyber systems are extensively used to control and monitor critical infrastructures. A considerable amount of the infrastructures are connected to the Internet over corporate networks. Therefore, cyber security is an important item for the national security agendas of several countries. The enforcement of security principles on the critical infrastructure operators through the regulations is a still-debated topic. There are several academic and governmental studies that analyze the possible regulatory approaches for the security of the critical infrastructures. Although most of them favor the market-oriented …

A Vulnerability-Driven Cyber Security Maturity Model For Measuring National Critical Infrastructure Protection Preparedness, Bilge Karabacak, Sevgi Ozkan Yildirim, Nazife Baykal

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Critical infrastructures are vital assets for the public safety, economic welfare and national security of countries. Cyber systems are used extensively to monitor and control critical infrastructures. A number of infrastructures are connected to the Internet via corporate networks. Cyber security is, therefore, an important item of the national security agenda of a country. The intense interest in cyber security has initiated research focusing on national cyber security maturity assessments. However, little, if any, research is dedicated to maturity assessments of national critical infrastructure protection efforts. Instead, the vast majority of studies merely examine diverse national-level security best practices ranging …

Strengthened Knights: Masculinity In Sir Isumbras And El Libro Del Caballero Zifar, Ruth Mary Gripentrog Jan 2016

Strengthened Knights: Masculinity In Sir Isumbras And El Libro Del Caballero Zifar, Ruth Mary Gripentrog

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I examine the masculinities of the titular characters in Sir Isumbras and El Libro del Caballero Zifar [The Book of the Knight Zifar] through a lens of power in which masculinity is proven through the dominance over other men. Zifar and Isumbras must construct and prove their masculinities in a variety of circumstances; however, they differ significantly in their treatment of masculinity: Sir Isumbras extolls a compound masculinity, which the Zifar aims for one of consistency. I have chosen to focus on two of medieval Europe’s main Christian powers, and through a comparative analysis, their distinct masculinities …

The Process Of Work Re-Entry For Nurses After Substance Use Disorders Treatment: A Grounded Theory Study, Deborah Matthias-Anderson Jan 2016

The Process Of Work Re-Entry For Nurses After Substance Use Disorders Treatment: A Grounded Theory Study, Deborah Matthias-Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explicate a substantive theory/model that describes the basic social processes (BSP) operating when a registered nurse (RN) re-enters the workplace following completion of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. There are a reported 2.6 million RNs employed in the U.S (U.S. Department of Labor, 2014). Over the past 25 years, prevalence studies have found up to 10% of nurses will meet diagnostic criteria for SUD, similar to prevalence rates in the general population. SUDs among nurses present challenges to society and to the nursing profession. State boards of nursing operate primarily to …

Not Your Business: Pedagogical Lessons Of Activist Resistance To Neoliberalism In Canadian Higher Education, Jorunn Thordarson Jan 2016

Not Your Business: Pedagogical Lessons Of Activist Resistance To Neoliberalism In Canadian Higher Education, Jorunn Thordarson

Theses and Dissertations

The growing power and permeation of neoliberal ideology across all facets of social life has been instrumental in promoting and orchestrating a shift among Canadian post-secondary institutions towards a reductive view of schooling at the expense of a more liberatory vision of education. The aim of this study was to examine the connections between power, education, and democracy in relation to the neoliberal restructuring of higher education in Canada, while simultaneously exploring discourses of resistance to neoliberal hegemony. Using critical discourse analysis, this study begins by establishing the promotion and naturalization of neoliberal ideology within the policy landscape of Canadian …

Privacy, Public Disclosure, Police Body Cameras: Policy Splits, Mary D. Fan

Articles

When you call the police for help—or someone calls the police on you—do you bear the risk that your worst moments will be posted on YouTube for public viewing? Police officers enter some of the most intimate incidences of our lives—after an assault, when we are drunk and disorderly, when someone we love dies in an accident, when we are distraught, enraged, fighting, and more. As police officers around the nation begin wearing body cameras in response to calls for greater transparency, communities are wrestling with how to balance privacy with public disclosure.

This Article sheds light on the balances …

Calibrating Lamodel For Subsidence, Jian Yang Jan 2016

Calibrating Lamodel For Subsidence, Jian Yang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

LaModel uses a laminated overburden boundary-element model and can not only calculate seam-level stresses and displacements but also surface subsidence for thin tabular deposit such as coal seams. Up to this point, the material property wizards in LaModel were primarily designed for calculating accurate stress redistribution in single and multiple-seam situations and for investigating and optimizing pillar sizes and layouts in relation to overburden, abutment and multiple-seam stresses. However, the critical input parameters which will give the most accurate seam-level stress distribution do not necessarily produce the best surface subsidence prediction. The objective of this research is to develop a …

Guns And Drugs, Benjamin Levin Jan 2016

Guns And Drugs, Benjamin Levin

Scholarship@WashULaw

This Article argues that the increasingly prevalent critiques of the War on Drugs apply to other areas of criminal law. To highlight the broader relevance of these critiques, the Article uses as its test case the criminal regulation of gun possession. The Article identifies and distills three lines of drug-war criticism, and argues that they apply to possessory gun crimes in much the same way that they apply to drug crimes. Specifically, the Article focuses on: (1) race- and class-based critiques; (2) concerns about police and prosecutorial power; and (3) worries about the social costs of mass incarceration. Scholars have …

Sharing Property, Kellen Zale Jan 2016

Sharing Property, Kellen Zale

University of Colorado Law Review

The sharing economy-the rapidly evolving sector of peer-topeer transactions epitomized by Airbnb and Uber-is the subject of heated debate about whether it is so novel that no laws apply, or whether the sharing economy should be subject to the same regulations as its analog counterparts. The debate has proved frustrating and controversial in large part because we lack a doctrinally cohesive and normatively satisfying way of talking about the underlying activities taking place in the sharing economy. In part, this is because property-sharing activities-renting your car out to a tourist for a day, paying to spend the weekend in a …

A Theory Of Quasi-Constitutional Legislation, Vanessa Macdonnell Jan 2016

A Theory Of Quasi-Constitutional Legislation, Vanessa Macdonnell

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Since the 1970s, the Supreme Court of Canada has treated a small number of statutes as quasi-constitutional. Despite the longstanding presence of quasi-constitutional statutes in Canadian law, however, the Court has yet to articulate comprehensive criteria for recognizing a statute or regulation as quasi-consitutional. In this article, I argue that quasi-constitutional legislation or more accurately, some provisions in quasi-constitutional legislation should be understood as implementing constitutional imperatives. I use the term constitutional imperatives to refer to constitutional obligations of varying degrees of specificity that emanate from the rights-conferring aspects of the Constitution, as well as from those aspects of the …

Psychoneuroimmunology: Enhancing Treatment Efficacy And Reducing Sexual Offender Recidivism In Court-Mandated Treatment, Cameron F. Zeidler Jan 2016

Psychoneuroimmunology: Enhancing Treatment Efficacy And Reducing Sexual Offender Recidivism In Court-Mandated Treatment, Cameron F. Zeidler

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Despite astronomical costs, state-funded sex offender treatment has a sole purpose of protecting communities at large. Designed to treat sexual psychopaths, costly state risk management programs are required to use traditional, outdated treatment models, which lack empirical support, lack published research, and lack curricula written at the seventh grade reading level. Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) eagerly proves to be a new modality for Psychoeducation (PE) enhancing treatment efficacy and reducing offender recidivism in court-mandated treatment. The distinction in the present study is the difference between PE alone (control group) and PE with PNI (experimental group). Specifically, this study investigated the extent to …

Mother Making: How First Time Mothers Develop A Parenting Practice In Contemporary America, Stephanie A. Wright Jan 2016

Mother Making: How First Time Mothers Develop A Parenting Practice In Contemporary America, Stephanie A. Wright

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

History has shown, time and again, that parenting practices in America change in the face of important social, political, cultural and ideological transitions. Such influences are often concealed, but nonetheless greatly impact not only the way mothers parent their children but also how they think of themselves in their mothering role. Historical and feminist scholars have helped to elucidate how broad historical legacies and current ideologies, such as patriarchy, capitalism, neoliberalism, and feminism itself, continue to shape dominant discursive understandings about motherhood. Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, eight first time mothers from mostly white, middle class, educated and full time working …

Lethality, Public Carry, And Adequate Alternatives, Joseph Blocher, Darrell A. H. Miller Jan 2016

Lethality, Public Carry, And Adequate Alternatives, Joseph Blocher, Darrell A. H. Miller

Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores the relationship between lethality and the right to bear arms, and considers how that relationship might be shaped by the availability of non-lethal alternative weapons. Prior scholarship has asked whether the Second Amendment includes a right to carry non-lethal “Arms.” An important set of related questions remains: does the Second Amendment necessarily include a right to arm oneself publicly with lethal force, if non-lethal alternatives are available? And how should one evaluate the adequacy of those alternatives?
