Case Study Of Historically Destructive Landslides In Hickory Nut Gorge Near Chimney Rock, North Carolina, Catherine Soplata
Case Study Of Historically Destructive Landslides In Hickory Nut Gorge Near Chimney Rock, North Carolina, Catherine Soplata
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Historical accounts of landslides induced by major storm events (1916, 1996) along the Hickory Nut Gorge near Chimney Rock, North Carolina as well as documented rockfall (2012) along a portion of massive exfoliating cliff faces, and the empirical evidence of enormous boulders scattered throughout the valley show that this part of the Blue Ridge is prone to landslides. With so much tourism due to Chimney Rock State Park and Lake Lure, it is imperative to gain a better understanding of the landslides in the Hickory Nut Gorge. This study is a field-work based multi-methods approach to classify these landslide deposits …
Negotiated Voluntary Licensing Of Pharmaceuticals: The Strategy Against Compulsory Licensing, Daniel D. Kim
Negotiated Voluntary Licensing Of Pharmaceuticals: The Strategy Against Compulsory Licensing, Daniel D. Kim
American University Intellectual Property Brief
Every fight, every encounter in which the pharmaceutical industry has tried to push back against compulsory licensing has the industry losing ground. Fighting this issue, whether in the World Trade Organization or through local courts, is not working. Here, a number of other strategies to mitigate the threat of compulsory licensing are explored. Some are more successful than others. Perhaps the most successful strategy to date though is the “negotiated voluntary licensing” model, most famously employed by Gilead Pharmaceuticals in India. Negotiated voluntary licensing allows the licensor to control the terms of the licensing agreement, the scope of the market …
The Role Of School Climate In Mitigating The Effects Of Neighborhood Socio-Economic Status And Violence On Academic Achievement, Linda D. Ruiz
The Role Of School Climate In Mitigating The Effects Of Neighborhood Socio-Economic Status And Violence On Academic Achievement, Linda D. Ruiz
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
In recent years the quality of education available to children has become increasingly dependent on the social and economic demographics of neighborhoods in which the children live. This study assesses the role of community violence in explaining the relation between SES and academic outcomes and the potential of positive school climate to promote academic achievement. With a sample of 297 Chicago public elementary schools, we test the hypotheses that violent crime mediates the relation between SES and academic achievement, and school climate has a direct effect on achievement and moderates the relation between SES and academic achievement. Results support the …

Sroi In The Pay For Success Context: Are They At Odds?, Robert L. Fischer, Francisca García Cobián Richter
Sroi In The Pay For Success Context: Are They At Odds?, Robert L. Fischer, Francisca García Cobián Richter
Faculty Scholarship
The Pay For Success (PFS) and Social Impact Bond (SIB) movements to date have focused heavily on shorter-term outcomes that can be monetized and show clear savings to government entities. In part, this focus derives from the need to specify contract payments based on a narrow set of well measured outcomes (e.g., avoided days in jail and foster care, decreased use of behavioral health services). Meanwhile efforts to measure the social return on investment (SROI) of interventions have sought to expand the view of relevant outcomes to include domains that lend themselves less clearly to monetization. This paper explores the …
Learning From Ferguson: African American Attitudes Towards Community Policing In Saint Louis, David Graham
Learning From Ferguson: African American Attitudes Towards Community Policing In Saint Louis, David Graham
Theses
This study combines an American Political Development approach to researching the history of racial segregation in Saint Louis with quantitative data focusing on African American attitudes related to politics, police and social prejudice following the civil unrest in Ferguson and Saint Louis City. The research I present emphasizes that decades of race-based municipal segregation in the Saint Louis area has combined with recent events and caused a majority of African American residents to become more suspicious of white police officers patrolling their neighborhoods

Space Traffic Management Concepts Leveraging Existing Frameworks, Stephen K. Hunter
Space Traffic Management Concepts Leveraging Existing Frameworks, Stephen K. Hunter
Space Traffic Management Conference
Leveraging existing U.S. regulatory frameworks, as well as international organizations, will dramatically shorten the time needed to develop an effective Space Traffic Management concept. Both the Department of Defense and the Department of Transportation have been working with the U.S. Congress to define and develop a Space Traffic Management concept that will allow the Office of Commercial Space Launch to begin a new mission that will help to ensure the safety and resilience of the space domain. Outside observers can easily see forward progress toward this, still, undeveloped concept. This paper explores potential final U.S. Space Traffic Management concepts that …

Air Traffic Impact Analysis Design For A Suborbital Point-To-Point Passenger Transport Concept, Tanja Luchkova, Sven Kaltenhaeuser, Frank Morlang
Space Traffic Management Conference
Space flight activities are growing on an international level, thereby creating an evident need for a safe and efficient integration of space vehicle operations into the air traffic system. For concepts like very high-speed intercontinental passenger transport via suborbital point-2-point flights, as it is proposed by the DLR SpaceLiner, this integration issue is becoming especially relevant. As part of a case study approach to analyse the effects of space vehicle operations on air traffic and to evaluate mitigation strategies and optimized ATM integration, a traffic impact analysis has been prepared and conducted for the SpaceLiner return trajectory towards a European …
Autonomous Inspections Of Utility Networks, Martin Freund, John Mosher
Autonomous Inspections Of Utility Networks, Martin Freund, John Mosher
Defensive Publications Series
Field inspections of utility network assets are a critical aspect of maintaining the quality and integrity of services provided by a utility. Currently, such inspections are performed largely by human inspectors. Such manual inspections are time-consuming, expensive, potentially dangerous to the inspectors and the surrounding public, subject to human error, disruptive to neighboring communities, and lack the speedy response needed in a disaster scenario. This disclosure describes a machine-based inspection mechanism for utility networks, based on, for example, autonomous or remotely-operated drones with the capability to perform intricate inspections at difficult-to-reach regions and heights. The inspection tasks including, for example, …

Attitudes Toward Adult Education Among Adult Learners Without A High School Diploma Or Ged, Andrea Rose Bennett
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore attitudes toward adult education among adult learners without a high school diploma or the General Educational Development (GED). In this study, adult learners without a high school diploma or GED completed the Attitudes Toward Adult Education Scale (AACES) and selected respondents volunteered to participate in a face-to-face interview in conjunction with the mixed methods section of the study. For this study, I used a 5-point Likert scale to measure the responses on the 22-item AACES survey.
Three hundred and fifty respondents participated in the study. Descriptive statistics and a three-way ANOVA revealed …

The Emergence Of Contemporary Bestiality Law: Applying The Integrative Conflict Model To The Enumclaw Case, Jason S. Ulsperger, Kristen L. Ulsperger, Cole Smith
The Emergence Of Contemporary Bestiality Law: Applying The Integrative Conflict Model To The Enumclaw Case, Jason S. Ulsperger, Kristen L. Ulsperger, Cole Smith
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"This article examines the social construction of bestiality law in the United States using the Integrative Conflict Model of law formation. With qualitative findings from a media content study including newspaper articles, a documentary transcript, and a variety of online data sources, it explores the dynamics behind the formation of bestiality law in the state of Washington. The research specifically uses the circumstances surrounding the death of Kenneth Pinyan, and the subsequent Enumclaw horse sex scandal that took place in the summer of 2005, to support the idea that bestiality law can emerge due to specific factors: structural foundations, perceptions …

“Explaining Similarities And Variations In Program Structures And Professional Roles In Midwestern Mental Health Courts” By Monte D. Staton And Arthur J. Lurigio, Monte D. Staton, Arthur J. Lurigio
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"For nearly twenty years, legal and mental health professionals have created mental health courts (MHCs) for responding to the increasing numbers of criminally involved people with severe mental illnesses (PSMI) who are entering the criminal justice system. This article presents findings from qualitative analysis of survey and ethnographic data collected at nine MHCs established in a Midwestern state between 2004 and 2008, exploring how professionals who operated the MHCs organized the programs and conducted roles at the work sites. Findings revealed that professionals established very similar models of mental health court organization at each of the nine sites. The data …
