Accounting For The Government Funding Of Non-Profits And The Planned Parenthood Federation Of America, Rachel E. Brown Apr 2016

Accounting For The Government Funding Of Non-Profits And The Planned Parenthood Federation Of America, Rachel E. Brown

Senior Honors Theses

Accounting creates a framework for providing transparency in an organization. This foundation is especially important in not-for-profit entities because government grants and contributions often compose significant portions of overall revenues and receipts. An overview of non-profit standards and the government system of distributing funds provides insight into non-profits as a whole and enables the study of specific organizations. As the nation’s largest provider of abortion and family planning services, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America is an especially important organization to study and understand. It receives significant funds from federal and state governments and should receive equally significant evaluation by …

Purpose of this work, from Erin Bock, Sherwood Foundation: Our community has come a long way over the last year in strategically partnering to reform the Juvenile Justice system in Douglas County. The strengthened relationships across the system are now enabling us to ask more assertive questions and gather catalytic evidence towards change. We are also in a position to foster mutual accountability for that change. It’s up to all of us! Lighting Northern New England With Water: A Comparative Analysis Of Wave And Tidal Hydrokinetic Energy Regulation, John Moran Apr 2016

Lighting Northern New England With Water: A Comparative Analysis Of Wave And Tidal Hydrokinetic Energy Regulation, John Moran

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

“Today, no area holds more promise than our investments in American energy. In order to limit our dependence on foreign oil, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and curtail rising consumer energy costs, the United States has adjusted its energy trajectory to support more actively the “development and integration of new clean and domestic renewable energy resources into the electric grid.” Although some contend the recent emergence of unconventional oil extraction methods, especially shale gas fracking,3 may hedge political support for renewable energy sources, hydrokinetic power provides a highly affordable and renewable, carbon-free energy source-our nation’s largest supply of*324 clean …

Ultra Vires Land Use Regulations: A Special Case In Substantive Due Process, Daniel A. Himebaugh Apr 2016

Ultra Vires Land Use Regulations: A Special Case In Substantive Due Process, Daniel A. Himebaugh

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

The U.S. Supreme Court’s land use jurisprudence establishes that arbitrary land use regulations violate the doctrine of substantive due process. Ultra vires land use regulations-those regulations that exceed the delegated authority of the regulating agency under state law-represent a particular type of arbitrary land use regulation. Lower federal courts that have examined such regulations are split on the question whether they violate substantive due process. This article contrasts two federal court of appeals cases in which property owners alleged that a local government agency deprived them of property without due process of law by enforcing an ultra vires land use …

Self-Determination Theory And Risk Behavior In A Collectivistic Society: Preventing Reckless Driving In Urban Nepal, Yerina Ranjit Apr 2016

Self-Determination Theory And Risk Behavior In A Collectivistic Society: Preventing Reckless Driving In Urban Nepal, Yerina Ranjit

Doctoral Dissertations

Traffic road accidents are one of the leading causes of mortality in Nepal and around the world (WHO, 2011). Drivers in Nepal are not adequately educated about road safety rules, and regulations are also not strictly enforced. Public safety campaigns may be able to alter driver’s attitudes and behaviors, however, little is known about which persuasive strategies may be most effective. Drawing on self-determination theory and the health belief model, the current study used a post-only experimental design to test of the impact of collective v. individual appeals, and messages that emphasized that the choice to act was up to …

Are Private Prisons To Blame For Mass Incarceration And Its Evils? Prison Conditions, Neoliberalism, And Public Choice, Hadar Aviram

Fordham Urban Law Journal

One of the frequently criticized aspects of American mass incarceration, privatized incarceration, is frequently considered worse, by definition, than public incarceration for both philosophical ethical reasons and because its for-profit structure creates a disincentive to invest in improving prison conditions. Relying on literature about the neoliberal state and on insights from public choice economics, this Article sets out to challenge the distinction between public and private incarceration, making two main arguments: piecemeal privatization of functions, utilities, and services within state prisons make them operate more like private facilities, and public actors respond to the cost/benefit pressures of the market just …
