The Priorities And Accomplishments Of Kentucky Legislators : Is There A Gender Difference?, Amanda Allen May 2016

The Priorities And Accomplishments Of Kentucky Legislators : Is There A Gender Difference?, Amanda Allen

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

This thesis uses Kentucky as a case study of gender differences in the policy priorities and perceptions of accomplishments of state legislators. The research question is, “are there gender differences in the legislative priorities and perceptions of accomplishments of Kentucky legislators?” The legislative priorities of the legislators seemed to be similar, along with their own classification of women’s issues. The perceptions of success demonstrated that male legislators were not necessarily more likely to attribute success to themselves, whereas women would attribute success to collaboration efforts. The research was completed through confidential interviews with Kentucky legislators and analysis of the 2015 …

Mandatory Minimum Sentences: Examining The Unfair Consequences Of Establishing Fairness, Sami Ghubril May 2016

Mandatory Minimum Sentences: Examining The Unfair Consequences Of Establishing Fairness, Sami Ghubril

2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

America’s war on drugs caused a significant increase in federal mandatory minimum sentencing laws. These laws were designed to serve as a deterrent to crime, carrying excessively punitive sentences for basic drug offenses, often without the possibility of parole. These laws are problematic because they skew the balance of power in the criminal justice system and treat medical problems as legal ones. This work will examine the history of America’s mandatory minimum sentencing laws, explain their expansion during America’s war on drugs, and outline the impact these laws have on society. This paper will demonstrate that mandatory minimum sentencing laws …

Intervention Within The Urban Fabric Of Fort Worth, Wendy Hurtado May 2016

Intervention Within The Urban Fabric Of Fort Worth, Wendy Hurtado

2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Gaps within an urban fabric both detach and isolate communities. These spaces, deprived of human activity, continue to increase throughout cities. In general, cities must take action to lower the number of vacant spaces, not simply because of the negative effects they take on their neighbors, but for the excessive expenses they create. Interventions within these gaps are of great benefit to their surroundings, creating a social impact and helping decrease the number of vacant spaces. My project focused in the city of Fort Worth and its current underutilized resources, either vacant spaces or abandoned buildings, that attract crime and …

Aging American Prisons: Length Of Stay, Dying Behind Bars, And Implications For Public Health, Stephanie G. Barger May 2016

Aging American Prisons: Length Of Stay, Dying Behind Bars, And Implications For Public Health, Stephanie G. Barger

Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses

One notable consequence of mass incarceration is the growing population of elderly prison inmates in the U.S. This growth raises questions concerning the causes and implications of such a change, as housing older prisoners places a financial strain on state and federal correctional systems. Because this added cost is largely a result of medical needs, the growing elderly inmate population has raised questions about the impact of incarceration on health. This study investigates the causes of this “graying” of American prisons and its potential effects on correctional and community health. Using National Corrections Reporting Program data from 1990 to 2009, …

Air Dispersion Modeling Of Multiple Natural Gas Well Pads At Different Terrain Conditions And Determination Of Inverse Distance Weighting Function Exponent, Fatemeh Khalaj May 2016

Air Dispersion Modeling Of Multiple Natural Gas Well Pads At Different Terrain Conditions And Determination Of Inverse Distance Weighting Function Exponent, Fatemeh Khalaj

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Natural gas production and development has been widely spreading all over the United States. Texas has been leading the nation in natural gas production by holding approximately twenty three percent of the nation’s natural gas reserves. However, natural gas exploration, drilling, production and distribution process have impacts on air quality and human health. The emissions from natural gas processes could be categorized as volatile organic compounds (including Hazardous Air Pollutants), methane, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxides, particulate matter and some other minor emitted pollutants, which have the potential of causing serious health problems and also impact air quality from an environmental …

Safety Aspects Of Bicyclists In A Connected Vehicle Environment, Ajaykumar Patil May 2016

Safety Aspects Of Bicyclists In A Connected Vehicle Environment, Ajaykumar Patil

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

The revival in the number of bicyclists, bike infrastructure investments and bike policies in the U.S. in the last two decades has escalated the importance of bicycling as a mode of transportation. With the proliferating role of the bicycle mode, bike fatalities continue to grow, too. In response to the increase in fatalities and crashes caused by human driven vehicles, the automobile industry and governments seek to develop autonomous vehicles that can address most of the human related crash causes. While increasing safety remains the primary goal of autonomous vehicles (AV) innovation, the difficulty of bicyclist and pedestrian detection using …

Connecting Through Communication - Incorporating Intercultural Competency During International Student Orientations, Keith A. Quatraro

Capstone Collection

The College of Southern Idaho (CSI) is a community college and is one of the fastest growing educational institutions in the state. The college enrolls, on average between 40 to 60 international students per academic year. CSI and the neighboring Refugee Center contribute to the community’s cultural diversity. There are numerous benefits for both international and domestic students to attending CSI. Those advantages include higher acceptance rates, lower required English proficiency scores, reduced tuition costs, and smaller class sizes. In addition, students are able to transfer to a larger university if they feel compelled to obtain a higher degree.

Exploring Differences Between The Health And Wellness Of State Police Officers And Community Corrections Professionals., Rodney Allen Copenhaver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a comparison study of health and wellness outcomes for a sample of law enforcement officers and a sample of community corrections professionals within the same state. As such, it is the first attempt to determine and compare the independent variables which are significant predictors of law enforcement officer and community corrections professionals’ health and wellness for criminal justice employees working in the same context. Data used in the research was gathered from nearly identical health and wellness surveys distributed to the sample of law enforcement officers and the sample of community corrections professionals. Logistic, negative binomial, and …

Examining The Motivations And Benefits Of Student-Athletes Performing Community Service., Matthew Ryan Huml May 2016

Examining The Motivations And Benefits Of Student-Athletes Performing Community Service., Matthew Ryan Huml

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With over 460,000 active student-athletes (NCAA, n.d.), the student sub-population is large enough to investigate potential options for institutions to increase their academic achievement. Additionally, participating in academic-related activities is especially important because of concerns about student-athletes spending more than the 20 hours per week the NCAA allows for working on their sport (Wolverton, 2008). Studies frequently highlight a lack of effort by student-athletes to adjust to academic opportunities and expectations within higher education (Adler & Adler, 1991; Lally & Kerr, 2005; Levine, Etchison, & Oppenheimer, 2014; Miller & Kerr, 2003). To combat this adjustment to higher education, community service …

Exchange Patterns And Relations In Collaborative Governance., Charles Wharton Kaye-Essien May 2016

Exchange Patterns And Relations In Collaborative Governance., Charles Wharton Kaye-Essien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Collaborative governance has received considerable attention in recent years. From environmental resource management to public safety, collaborative governance continues to play a vital role in regional problem solving. In spite of this increasing popularity previous attempts to model the political, economic, and demographic determinants of collaboration have in most cases produced inconsistent results, thereby undermining the ability to generalize from such findings. Additionally, our understanding of the relational patterns that emanate from collaborative agreements remains fairly rudimentary. The main objective of this research is to address some of the gaps in the literature and improve our understanding of collaborative governance …

Challenges Of Implementing Defense Policies To Deter Hostile Actors In Space And Cyberspace, Stephan Dwayne Bjerring Powers May 2016

Challenges Of Implementing Defense Policies To Deter Hostile Actors In Space And Cyberspace, Stephan Dwayne Bjerring Powers

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Space and cyber operations have changed national security for both nations and non-state actors worldwide. The low barriers to entry have allowed less sophisticated nations and actors to have an impact on the U.S. and near-peer nations. The lack of attribution and the ability to obfuscate the source of the space or cyber weapon will make the case for wartime retaliation difficult. The highly proactive antisatellite weapons test conducted by China in 2007 and the alleged employment of Stuxnet against Iran's nuclear program by the United States and Israel illustrates the potentially destabilizing effects to high priority national programs. If …

The Ebola Crisis: A Communicative Response From Samaritan's Purse, Bailie Porter May 2016

The Ebola Crisis: A Communicative Response From Samaritan's Purse, Bailie Porter

Masters Theses

Crisis does not discriminate. It can strike without warning, at any time or place. Managers, organizations, and leaders alike, must be ready at all times to respond to them, whether they are planned for or not. An efficient and quick response is especially necessary when health crises or natural disasters strike, because human life may be at stake. Crisis communication has become more and more important in a world that is daily filled with catastrophes. This study uses W. Timothy Coomb’s situational crisis communication theory as a lens to view the Ebola crisis. The purpose of the research is to …

'Ill-Liver Of Her Body:' A Legal Examination Of Prostitution In Late Medieval Greater London, Lauren Marie Martiere May 2016

'Ill-Liver Of Her Body:' A Legal Examination Of Prostitution In Late Medieval Greater London, Lauren Marie Martiere

All Theses

The following study endeavors to synthesize and enhance knowledge of what has previously been an under-represented field in the study of English medieval prostitution. It examines a variety of primary sources documenting the laws, punishments, and regulations concerning sexual commerce and reaches conclusions about the marginalization of prostitutes and the diverging systems of prostitution control implemented in the City of London and the Bishop of Winchester's manor in Southwark. First, women, especially prostitutes, were marginalized in medieval English society. The prostitutes' inability to play an active role in either the secular or religious life of English communities cemented their position …

The Financial Stability Of Nonprofit Organizations, Heather M. Blalack May 2016

The Financial Stability Of Nonprofit Organizations, Heather M. Blalack

Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses

Abstract

This thesis evaluates the financial stability of nonprofit organizations and their ability to effectively facilitate the accounting functions of a business. Specifically, it focuses on the companies’ ability to maintain steady cash flow and fulfill all financial obligations while also achieving commitments stated in the company’s mission statement and core values. In addition, this analysis concentrates on the immense lack of knowledge and experience pertaining to financial management within many nonprofits as well as the scarcity of related trainings. As most administrators of nonprofits lack the proper training or background pertaining to financial oversight, there is often an imbalance …

Character Assessment: Three Essays, Collin E. Hitt May 2016

Character Assessment: Three Essays, Collin E. Hitt

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I propose a new approach to measuring character skills. In the following three essays, my co-‎authors and I measure the effort that adolescent students appear to put forward on surveys ‎and tests. First, I examine the extent to which students simply skip questions or plead ‎ignorance on surveys. Second, I develop new methods for detecting careless answers, those ‎instances in which students appear to be "just filling in the bubbles." I show, using ‎longitudinal datasets, that both measures are predictive of educational degree attainment, ‎independent of measured cognitive ability and other demographic factors. Finally, I ‎demonstrate that international differences in …

Non-Profit Fundraising Event Plan, Carolyn S. Forner

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

This project conducts applied research through a fundraising project for the Alaska Institute for Justice (AIJ). Founded in 2005, AIJ is a non-profit agency that provides legal services to immigrants and refugees. It represents people fleeing persecution in their home countries as well as domestic violence and human trafficking crime victims. It provides the only low-fee services of its kind in the state, helping community members who are often isolated, low-income, vulnerable to abuse, and with few other avenues to gain legal representation. AIJ also operates a statewide language interpreter center that provides immigrant and refugee expertise to numerous state …

Formative Research For Case Management Protocol Addressing Neighborhood Trauma Due To Violence, Azada Wan May 2016

Formative Research For Case Management Protocol Addressing Neighborhood Trauma Due To Violence, Azada Wan

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

My capstone project is focused on conducting formative research for developing a case management protocol to reduce recidivism in youths aged 13 to 16. This formative research will serve as a basis for Street Addiction Institute Inc.’s request for proposal (RFP) to Onondaga County Department of Justice. As Street Addiction Institute Inc. is currently in the process of applying for funding at the federal and county levels, the formative research I conducted by integrating knowledge obtained from literature, expertise of community leaders and professionals, and understanding of youth’s specific characteristics, needs, and risks, will inform the development of a case …

Is It 10-4 To Be A Complaining Cop? Antecedents And Consequences Of Complaining At Work Among Police Officers, Megan E. Morgan May 2016

Is It 10-4 To Be A Complaining Cop? Antecedents And Consequences Of Complaining At Work Among Police Officers, Megan E. Morgan

All Theses

Previous research has explored complaining in the context of consumer behavior and complaints made against organizations, yet there are gaps in the literature concerning complaining in the workplace among police officers. The present study explored the audiences of complaints expressed by police officers, the topics of dissatisfaction experienced by officers, whether expressed or not, and the organizational antecedents and consequences that may accompany complaining at work. Police officers in a suburban southeastern police department were surveyed to investigate these areas. Results indicated that officers primarily complain around their peers at work, and the correlates of complaining differ by the type …

Do Parole Revocations Contribute To Racial Disproportionality In Imprisonment? A Multilevel Analysis Of State Prison Admissions From 1990-2009, Caitlin Curry May 2016

Do Parole Revocations Contribute To Racial Disproportionality In Imprisonment? A Multilevel Analysis Of State Prison Admissions From 1990-2009, Caitlin Curry

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Scholars have sought to understand the problem of racial disproportionality in U.S. imprisonment rates for over four decades, but current research has yet to identify the specific correctional mechanisms that exacerbate racial differences in incarceration (Garland, 2013). The rate of parole revocations increased markedly in the 1990s and 2000s, contributing to the growth in imprisonment in the US. Likewise, some research also finds that the likelihood of parole revocation varies by race, but we know little about the effect of parole revocations on imprisonment disparity (Huebner and Bynum, 2008). This study uses a sample of 24 states over a twenty …
