Culturally Responsive Teaching: Implications For Educational Justice, Magnus O. Bassey Nov 2016

Culturally Responsive Teaching: Implications For Educational Justice, Magnus O. Bassey

Publications and Research

Educational justice is a major global challenge. In most underdeveloped countries, many students do not have access to education and in most advanced democracies, school attainment and success are still, to a large extent, dependent on a student’s social background. However, it has often been argued that social justice is an essential part of teachers’ work in a democracy. This article raises an important overriding question: how can we realize the goal of educational justice in the field of teaching? In this essay, I examine culturally responsive teaching as an educational practice and conclude that it is possible to realize …

Social Norms And Fundraising: The Trade-Off Between Enhanced Donations And Donor Identity Esteem, J Shang, A Sargeant Nov 2016

Social Norms And Fundraising: The Trade-Off Between Enhanced Donations And Donor Identity Esteem, J Shang, A Sargeant

Plymouth Business School

The academic literature in fundraising has focused primarily on understanding the drivers for giving. For example, past research shows that the proper use of social information (i.e., perception about the amount of another individual’s giving) can increase the amount of a focal donor’s contribution by more than 10% without additional fundraising cost. It does so because people use another person’s giving to estimate how much on average others give and they then conform to that social norm. This paper examines the degree to which one’s perception of a social norm associates not with how much they give but with how …

From Recovery To Discovery: Ethnic American Science Fiction And (Re)Creating The Future, Daoine S. Bachran Nov 2016

From Recovery To Discovery: Ethnic American Science Fiction And (Re)Creating The Future, Daoine S. Bachran

English Language and Literature ETDs

My project assesses how science fiction by writers of color challenges the scientific racism embedded in genetics, nuclear development, digital technology, and molecular biology, demonstrating how these fields are deployed disproportionately against people of color. By contextualizing current scientific development with its often overlooked history and exposing the full life cycle of scientific practices and technological changes, ethnic science fiction authors challenge science’s purported objectivity and make room for alternative scientific methods steeped in Indigenous epistemologies. The first chapter argues that genetics is deployed disproportionally against black Americans, from the pseudo-scientific racial classifications of the nineteenth century and earlier through …

Magazine Influence On Body Dissatisfaction: Fashion Vs. Health?, Paulina Swiatkowski Nov 2016

Magazine Influence On Body Dissatisfaction: Fashion Vs. Health?, Paulina Swiatkowski

Faculty Publications

Fashion magazines have been shown to have a negative relationship with body dissatisfaction and psychological health, while the effects of health magazines on body dissatisfaction and psychological health have mainly been studied with men. However, because of gender differences, health magazine consumption effects on men cannot be applied equally to women. Therefore, the present study uses sociocultural theory to study health magazine and possible similarities to fashion magazine effects on women’s body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness. Sociocultural attitude toward appearance is then explored as a mediator and potential moderator in the established relationship between magazine consumption and psychological health, …

The Psychological Concept Of “Person”, Kristin Andrews Nov 2016

The Psychological Concept Of “Person”, Kristin Andrews

Animal Sentience

Reluctance to overextend personhood seems to drive many of the skeptical responses in the first round of commentaries on Rowlands's target article. Despite Rowlands’s straightforward Response that we already accept some nonhumans as persons, there is still hesitation to accept that other nonhuman animals are persons. Rowlands's argument is sound but the skeptics don’t accept the Lockean notion of person. The metaphysical sense of person is a psychological one, however, and psychological properties grant one moral status according to many ethical theories.

Who Wrote The Books: A History Of The History Of Student Affairs, Anna L. Patton Nov 2016

Who Wrote The Books: A History Of The History Of Student Affairs, Anna L. Patton

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

This historiography offers a critique of the common narrative of student affairs history by considering the ways in which the history of student affairs is mediated by those scholars writing the texts. Student affairs professionals and scholars are regularly engaged in reflection on current practices, trends, and concerns within the field; however, it is equally important to continue looking back into our professional history. In this paper, I employ a process of historiography to critique the way in which the history of student affairs is mediated by those scholars writing the texts. A historiography seeks to tell the history of …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 9(5): 599-606, 2016. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between spatial awareness, agility, and distance covered in global positioning system (GPS) derived velocity zone classifications during a collegiate rugby match. Twelve American collegiate rugby union players (mean±SD; age: 21.2±1.4 y; weight: 85.0±16.0 kg; 7 forwards & 5 backs) on a single team volunteered to participate in this investigation. The distances travelled at low (walking/jogging; <2.7m/s), moderate (cruising/striding; 2.7-5.0 m/s), and high intensities (running/sprinting; >5.0 m/s) were measured for each player using GPS sensors and normalized according to playing time during an official USA Rugby match. Spatial awareness was measured …

Natural Training Hydration Status, Sweat Rates, And Perception Of Sweat Losses During Crossfit Training, Christina C. Cronin, Eric O'Neal, Jeffrey Simpson, Brandon L. Miller, Matt Green, Jean A. Helm Allen, Shelby Boman

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 9(5): 576-586, 2016. This study assessed 30 male and 20 female well-trained CrossFit (XF) athletes’ natural hydration statuses, fluid intake, and absolute and estimated sweat losses during training sessions lasting 30-47 min. Participants provided a pre-workout urine sample for assessment of hydration by urine specific gravity (USG). Nude pre- and post-workout body mass and fluid intakes were measured to determine sweat losses. To evaluate perception of total sweat loss, participants were asked to estimate their total sweat loss to compare against actual sweat loss. Mean sweat losses did not exceed 1% body mass for men …

The Television Audience: A Research Review, Mary Kelly Nov 2016

The Television Audience: A Research Review, Mary Kelly

Irish Communication Review

Television researchers. like television producers, regulators and other commentators. have used a variety of perspectives in their attempt to understand different facets of that apparently simple but in effect rather illusive category 'the television audience'. In this article I will look at three of these: those which have emphazised the audience as consumers. those which have defined the audience as public citizens. and those which have focused on the audience as cultural actors. Whlle noUng previous research within each of these perspectives and drawing on Irish research when avaHable. I will particularly concentrate on more recent developments. These developments have …

The Origins Of The Transgender Phenomenon: The Challenge And Opportunity For Training Lawyers, Judges And Policy Makers In The Historicity Of Alfred Kinsey’S Pansexual Worldview, Judith Reisman

Faculty Publications and Presentations

How has the country gone from a “firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence” to where defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman is condemned as constitutionally irrational, and where the use of sex-separate private spaces by biological sex is subject to federal discrimination lawsuits? The answer can be traced to 1948 when Dr. Alfred C. Kinsey launched what was marketed then--and now--as the first “scientific” study of human sexuality.Indeed, Chief Judge of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, Richard Posner extols Kinsey’s study as the “high-water mark of descriptive sexology.”Influential law professors such as Columbia University’s …
