A Critique Of Henrik Friberg-Fernros's Defense Of The Substance View, William Simkulet Nov 2016

A Critique Of Henrik Friberg-Fernros's Defense Of The Substance View, William Simkulet

Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications

Proponents of the substance view contend that abortion is seriously morally wrong because it is killing something with the same inherent value and right to life as you or I. Rob Lovering offers two innovative criticisms of the anti-abortion position taken by the substance view - the rescue argument and the problem of spontaneous abortion. Henrik Friberg-Fernros offers an interesting response to Lovering, but one I argue would be inconsistent with the anti-abortion stance taken by most substance view theorists.

Screwing The Assembly Line: Queerness, Art-Making And Mandela's Mercedes-Benz, Elliot James Nov 2016

Screwing The Assembly Line: Queerness, Art-Making And Mandela's Mercedes-Benz, Elliot James

History Publications

This article analyses the bed installation in Simon Gush’s Red exhibit to draw attention to the ‘sleep-in’ aspect of the 1990 East London Mercedes-Benz strike. It shows how the strike narrative’s emphasis on the shop workers and Nelson Mandela’s flawless red Mercedes-Benz automatically insulates the strike’s central sleep-in component from the topic of queer desire. By revealing Red’s beds and the acts thereon as the strike narrative’s ‘queer limit’, the article uses Gush and Emma Sulkowicz’s techniques to reinvent the sleep-in as a complex space of homosociality and queer self-discovery. Doing so builds on Gush’s installations and uses performance to …

Timss 2015 : A First Look At Australia's Results, Sue Thomson, Nicole Wernert, Elizabeth O'Grady, Sima Rodrigues

TIMSS 2015

The goal of TIMSS is to provide comparative information about educational achievement across countries to improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science. It is designed, broadly, to align with the mathematics and science curricula in the participating education systems and countries, and focuses on assessment at Year 4 and Year 8. It also provides comparative perspectives on trends in achievement in the context of different education systems, school organisational approaches and instructional practices; and to enable this, TIMSS collects a rich array of background data from students, schools and teachers, and also collects data about the education systems themselves. …

Longitudinal Stability Of Effect Sizes In Education Research, Joshua Stephens Nov 2016

Longitudinal Stability Of Effect Sizes In Education Research, Joshua Stephens

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Educators use meta-analyses to decide best practices. It has been suggested that effect sizes have declined over time due to various biases. This study applies an established methodological framework to educational meta-analyses and finds that effect sizes have increased from 1970–present. Potential causes for this phenomenon are discussed.

Doubly Censored Data From Two-Component Mixture Of Inverse Weibull Distributions: Theory And Applications, Tabassum Sindhu, Navid Feroze, Muhammad Aslam Nov 2016

Doubly Censored Data From Two-Component Mixture Of Inverse Weibull Distributions: Theory And Applications, Tabassum Sindhu, Navid Feroze, Muhammad Aslam

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Finite mixture distributions consist of a weighted sum of standard distributions and are a useful tool for reliability analysis of a heterogeneous population. They provide the necessary flexibility to model failure distributions of components with multiple failure models. The analysis of the mixture models under Bayesian framework has received sizable attention in the recent years. However, the Bayesian estimation of the mixture models under doubly censored samples has not yet been introduced in the literature. The main objective of this paper is to discuss the Bayes estimation of the inverse Weibull mixture distributions under doubly censoring. Different priors and loss …

A Comparison Of Usual T-Test Statistic And Modified T-Test Statistics On Skewed Distribution Functions, Wooi K. Lim, Alice W. Lim Nov 2016

A Comparison Of Usual T-Test Statistic And Modified T-Test Statistics On Skewed Distribution Functions, Wooi K. Lim, Alice W. Lim

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

When the sample size n is small, the random variable T= √n(\overline{X} – μ)/S is said to follow a central t distribution with degrees of freedom (n – 1), where \overline{X} is the sample mean and S is the sample standard deviation, provided that the data X ~ N (μ, σ2). The random variable T can be used as a test statistic to hypothesize the population mean μ. Some argue that the t-test statistic is robust against the normality of the distribution and claim that the normality assumption is not necessary. In this …

Preliminary Tests Of Normality When Comparing Three Independent Samples, Björn Lantz, Roy Andersson, Peter Manfredsson Nov 2016

Preliminary Tests Of Normality When Comparing Three Independent Samples, Björn Lantz, Roy Andersson, Peter Manfredsson

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This paper uses simulation to explore the performance of a two-stage procedure where a preliminary Shapiro-Wilk test is used to choose between the ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests as a three-sample location test. The results suggest that the two-stage procedure actually seems to be preferable when conducting such location tests.

Comparison Of Some Multivariate Nonparametric Tests In Profile Analysis To Repeated Measurements, Mehrdad Vossoughi, Shila Shahvali, Erfan Sadeghi Nov 2016

Comparison Of Some Multivariate Nonparametric Tests In Profile Analysis To Repeated Measurements, Mehrdad Vossoughi, Shila Shahvali, Erfan Sadeghi

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Through Monte Carlo simulations, the performance of six multivariate nonparametric tests for testing the hypothesis of parallelism in profile analysis was studied. In conclusion, the tests based on ranks were as efficient as Hotelling's T2 under multivariate normal distribution. For the heavy tailed distribution, the tests based on signs performed best.

Within Groups Anova When Using A Robust Multivariate Measure Of Location, Rand Wilcox, Timothy Hayes Nov 2016

Within Groups Anova When Using A Robust Multivariate Measure Of Location, Rand Wilcox, Timothy Hayes

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

For robust measures of location associated with J dependent groups, various methods have been proposed that are aimed at testing the global hypothesis of a common measure of location applied to the marginal distributions. A criticism of these methods is that they do not deal with outliers in a manner that takes into account the overall structure of the data. Location estimators have been derived that deal with outliers in this manner, but evidently there are no simulation results regarding how well they perform when the goal is to test the some global hypothesis. The paper compares four bootstrap methods …

Some Remarks On Rao And Lovric’S ‘Testing Point Null Hypothesis Of A Normal Mean And The Truth: 21st Century Perspective’, Bruno D. Zumbo, Edward Kroc Nov 2016

Some Remarks On Rao And Lovric’S ‘Testing Point Null Hypothesis Of A Normal Mean And The Truth: 21st Century Perspective’, Bruno D. Zumbo, Edward Kroc

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Although we have much to agree with in Rao and Lovric’s important discussion of the test of point null hypotheses, it stirred us to provide a way out of their apparent Zero probability paradox and cast the Hodges-Lehmann paradigm from a Serlin-Lapsley approach. We close our remarks with an eye toward a broad perspective.

Testing Point Null Hypothesis Of A Normal Mean And The Truth: 21st Century Perspective, Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, Miodrag M. Lovric Nov 2016

Testing Point Null Hypothesis Of A Normal Mean And The Truth: 21st Century Perspective, Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, Miodrag M. Lovric

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Testing a point (sharp) null hypothesis is arguably the most widely used statistical inferential procedure in many fields of scientific research, nevertheless, the most controversial, and misapprehended. Since 1935 when Buchanan-Wollaston raised the first criticism against hypothesis testing, this foundational field of statistics has drawn increasingly active and stronger opposition, including draconian suggestions that statistical significance testing should be abandoned or even banned. Statisticians should stop ignoring these accumulated and significant anomalies within the current point-null hypotheses paradigm and rebuild healthy foundations of statistical science. The foundation for a paradigm shift in testing statistical hypotheses is suggested, which is testing …

Beyond The Matrix: Repository Services For Qualitative Data, Sebastian Karcher, Dessi Kirilova, Nic Weber Nov 2016

Beyond The Matrix: Repository Services For Qualitative Data, Sebastian Karcher, Dessi Kirilova, Nic Weber

Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs

The Qualitative Data Repository (QDR) provides infrastructure and guidance for the sharing and reuse of digital data used in qualitative and multi-method social inquiry. In this paper we describe some of the repository’s early experiences providing services developed specifically for the curation of qualitative research data. We focus on QDR’s efforts to address two key challenges for qualitative data sharing. The first challenge concerns constraints on data sharing in order to protect human participants and their identities and to comply with copyright laws. The second set of challenges addresses the unique characteristics of qualitative data and their relationship to the …

Increasing Engagement Of Students With Learning Disabilities In Mathematical Problem-Solving And Discussion, Rachel Lambert, Trisha Sugita Nov 2016

Increasing Engagement Of Students With Learning Disabilities In Mathematical Problem-Solving And Discussion, Rachel Lambert, Trisha Sugita

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Engagement in problem-solving and mathematical discussion is critical for learning mathematics. This research review describes a gap in the literature surrounding engagement of students with Learning Disabilities in standards-based mathematical classrooms. Taking a sociocultural view of engagement as participation in mathematical practices, this review found that students with LD were supported towards equal engagement in standards-based mathematics through multi-modal curriculum, consistent routines for problem-solving, and teachers trained in Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching. Using this small set of studies (7), we identify the need to deepen the engagement of students with LD in mathematical problem-solving and discussion. This review concludes with …

The Logic Of Comprehensive Or Deep Emotional Change, Jeremy Barris Nov 2016

The Logic Of Comprehensive Or Deep Emotional Change, Jeremy Barris

Humanities Faculty Research

The article proposes an analogue of conceptual change in the context of comprehensive or deep emotional change and growth, and explores some aspects of its logic in that context. This is not to reduce emotions to concepts, but to say that concepts express the sense that is already inherent in experience and reality. When emotional states change so thoroughly that their applicable concepts become completely different, they shift from one logical structure to another. At the moment or phase when one conceptual structure transforms into another, two logically incompatible descriptions both apply to the same state at the same time. …

Boko Haram Terrorism In The Lake Chad Basin Region: Implications For Subregional Security, Abiodun Joseph Oluwadare Ph.D. Nov 2016

Boko Haram Terrorism In The Lake Chad Basin Region: Implications For Subregional Security, Abiodun Joseph Oluwadare Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Terrorist activities in the Lake Chad Basin region of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon, have impacted negatively on the security, socio-political and economic situations in the region. This paper investigates the evolution of insurgency and the factors leading to its growth in the region. It also examines its socio-political, economic and security implications. Nigeria, in the centre of the imbroglio, has had no respite from terrorist activities for a long time. Boko Haram has carried out many gun attacks and bombings in many strategic places, including the United Nations building in Abuja, the federal capital city. There have been similar …

Gendered Vulnerabilities To Small Arms In South Central Somalia, Abigail Jones, Nicola Sandhu, Lucas Musetti Nov 2016

Gendered Vulnerabilities To Small Arms In South Central Somalia, Abigail Jones, Nicola Sandhu, Lucas Musetti

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Somalia is a very young nation demographically; estimates place half the population under the age of 14 and less than five percent over the age of 60. A large portion of the population grew up during incredible civil instability and violence, making exposure to armed violence an ever-present prospect. Further, the presence of more than one million displaced persons and refugees exacerbates the difficulties of protecting vulnerable groups from violence.
