The Best Laid Plans: Educational Innovation In Elementary Teacher Generated Integrated Stem Lesson Plans, Christina M. Sias, Louis S. Nadelson, Stephanie M. Juth, Anne L. Seifert

Teacher Education and Leadership Student Research

Students need to be prepared for the 21st century by developing the literacy skills necessary for participating in the age of synthesis—an age that requires a progressive set of skills and knowledge. The authors identified nine educational innovations that are perceived to be effective for preparing students for the 21st century age of synthesis society. They coded a collection of 39 teacher-generated Grade 3–5 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) lesson plans to document the extent to which the teachers included these nine educational innovations their STEM lesson planning. The authors found practices such as project-based and student-centered learning (which …

Stimulus Threat And Exposure Context Modulate The Effect Of Mere Exposure On Approach Behaviors, Steven G. Young, Isaiah F. Jones, Heather M. Claypool Nov 2016

Stimulus Threat And Exposure Context Modulate The Effect Of Mere Exposure On Approach Behaviors, Steven G. Young, Isaiah F. Jones, Heather M. Claypool

Publications and Research

Mere-exposure (ME) research has found that initially neutral objects made familiar are preferred relative to novel objects. Recent work extends these preference judgments into the behavioral domain by illustrating that mere exposure prompts approachoriented behavior toward familiar stimuli. However, no investigations have examined the effect of mere exposure on approach-oriented behavior toward threatening stimuli. The current work examines this issue and also explores how exposure context interacts with stimulus threat to influence behavioral tendencies. In two experiments participants were presented with both mere-exposed and novel stimuli and approach speed was assessed. In the first experiment, when stimulus threat was presented …

The Potential Of A Virtual School To Help Mobile Students, Amy G. Dickinson Nov 2016

The Potential Of A Virtual School To Help Mobile Students, Amy G. Dickinson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

An average of 1.8 million students drop out of high school each year (National Council of Education Statistics, 2014). Dropping out of high school is a problem for both society and the individual (Rumberger, 2003). It can lead to lower wages, unemployment, and incarceration. Mobile students make up a part of those who drop out of school. Students are considered mobile if they attend more than one high school in four years (Rumberger & Larson, 1998). One way of helping highly mobile students is to offer asynchronous virtual classes. Using Institutional Theory (Rumberger, 2001) and Academic Mediation Theory (Vygotsky, 1978; …

From Combat Zones To The Classroom: Transitional Adjustment In Oef/Oif Student Veterans, Lorrie Kato, Jeremy D. Jinkerson, Sarah C. Holland, Henry V. Soper Nov 2016

From Combat Zones To The Classroom: Transitional Adjustment In Oef/Oif Student Veterans, Lorrie Kato, Jeremy D. Jinkerson, Sarah C. Holland, Henry V. Soper

The Qualitative Report

With 600,000 veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom enrolled in higher education with the Post-9/11 GI Bill, recognizing and responding to their predictable adjustment issues is imperative. Existing qualitative research has identified some transitional issues encountered by small groups of veterans. Because of qualitative research’s limited generalizability, however, themes may be viewed as more generalizable when corroborated by student veterans in different regions. In order to provide an in-depth description of the themes related to the post-deployment adjustment process, the first author conducted semi-structured interviews with 19 student veterans from a Southwestern community college who were returning to …

A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Emotional Labour On Health Managers, Carlene Boucher

The Qualitative Report

The objective of the study was to examine how surface acting is used by middle managers to manage the emotional displays of executives in the health industry in Australia. The research was located within a social constructionist epistemology and the theoretical construct used to structure the study was surface acting. Data was generated through qualitative interviews with 49 middle managers. Analysis was undertaken using grounded theory and thematic analysis. The main finding was that unlike male managers, female managers took on the role of managing the emotional displays of senior staff and used surface acting as the means of doing …

First 100 Days Persistence-Retention Plans, Kenneth W. Borland Jr. Nov 2016

First 100 Days Persistence-Retention Plans, Kenneth W. Borland Jr.

Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education

Taking environments, persistence-retention, and social capital theories to the individual student as the level of analyses, and placing them within a “First 100 Days” strategy of prioritized urgency and energy as utilized by presidents of the United States since Franklin D. Roosevelt, the author challenges broad-based, long-term approaches to student persistence and institutional retention of students. A framework for “First 100 Days” persistence-retention plans for improved student and institution success is outlined.

What's In An Ally? Closing Gaps In Lgbtq+ Support, Laura Gentner Nov 2016

What's In An Ally? Closing Gaps In Lgbtq+ Support, Laura Gentner

Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education

This study will explore the relationship between LGBTQ+ identifying students’ expectations of and experiences with allies, and their perceptions of campus climate. LGBTQ+ ally training programs and visibility of LGBTQ+ allies contribute to both campus climate and LGBTQ+ students’ perceptions of that climate, leading to more positive and healthy college experiences. However, it is not clear that current practice in training and educating allies truly reflects the needs of LGBTQ+ identifying students.

While research is available for the design and implementation of ally training programs, there is little to no research on what LGBTQ+ identifying students expect of allies, nor …

“Re-Formatio”: The Reformation Of The Sixteenth Century And Church Reform Today, Hubertus Blaumeiser Nov 2016

“Re-Formatio”: The Reformation Of The Sixteenth Century And Church Reform Today, Hubertus Blaumeiser

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article begins by noting that historians are still unclear as to whether Luther pinned 95 Theses on indulgences to the door of the church of Wittenberg Castle. Many believe that what actually happened is that on October 31, 1517 Luther sent his reflections to Archbishop Albrecht of Brandenburg and then to his colleague theologians for an academic discussion. There was no intention to provoke a division within the church as it later came about in the context of complex historical and ecclesial circumstances and other factors. In the central part of the article the author investigates the basic principles …

Insect Consciousness: Commitments, Conflicts And Consequences, Colin Klein, Andrew B. Barron Nov 2016

Insect Consciousness: Commitments, Conflicts And Consequences, Colin Klein, Andrew B. Barron

Animal Sentience

Our target article, “Insects have the capacity for subjective experience,” has provoked a diverse range of commentaries. In this response we have collated what we see as the major themes of the discussion. It is clear that we differ from some commentators in our commitments to what subjective experience is and what the midbrain is capable of. Here we clarify where we stand on those points and how our view differs from some other influential perspectives. The commentaries have highlighted the most lively areas of disagreement. We revisit here the debates surrounding whether the cortex is essential for any form …

Expanding The Model Of Organizational Learning: Scope, Contingencies, And Dynamics, Barbara Grah, Vlado Dimovski, Charles C. Snow, Judita Peterlin Nov 2016

Expanding The Model Of Organizational Learning: Scope, Contingencies, And Dynamics, Barbara Grah, Vlado Dimovski, Charles C. Snow, Judita Peterlin

Economic and Business Review

Our paper seeks to contribute to the understanding of organizational learning by (a) integrating existing models of organizational learning into a single model and (b) expanding the model to include inter-organizational learning, adding key contingencies suggested by the growing literature on neuroleadership, and incorporating a process dimension to reflect the fact that organizational learning is continuous and dynamic. The resulting expanded model of organizational learning encompasses four levels on which learning can occur: individual, team, organizational, and inter-organizational. The overall validity of the model is illustrated by applying it to two knowledge-intensive Slovenian firms. Implications for theory and practice are …

Self-Perceived Impact Of Undergraduate Socialization And Identity Development On The Experiences Of High-Achieving African American Women, Christina Shaneil Ealy Nov 2016

Self-Perceived Impact Of Undergraduate Socialization And Identity Development On The Experiences Of High-Achieving African American Women, Christina Shaneil Ealy

Theses and Dissertations

Statistics show an increase in college enrollment of African American women, despite the formal and informal barriers that persist (Roach, 2001, Altbach, Lomotey, & Rivers, 2002, Thomas & Jackson, 2007). Fewer studies focus particularly on African American women as do those of Collins (2000), Howard-Hamilton (2004), and Winkle-Wagner (2008, 2009). Despite their increase in enrollment, African American women in college face many informal barriers that are constructed according to race, gender and class (Howard-Hamilton, 2003, Winkle-Wagner, 2009). These informal barriers should be examined to understand how they impact socialization and identity development of high achieving African American women in higher …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative research study was to examine two community colleges and two universities located in Arkansas that each provide a specialized program for students with disabilities including students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or specifically for students with ASD. Using parts of the Communicative Model of Interorganizational Collaboration developed by Koschmann and Isbell (2009) and the Stage Model of Collaboration posited by Kezar and Lester (2009) to frame the study, the conceptual framework combined various variables into constructs that included educational organization, external constituencies, and interorganizational collaboration that composed the factors leading to successful transitions to and …

Digital Piracy Among Adults In Slovenia: An Application Of The Theory If Interpersonal Behavior, Mateja Kos Koklič Nov 2016

Digital Piracy Among Adults In Slovenia: An Application Of The Theory If Interpersonal Behavior, Mateja Kos Koklič

Economic and Business Review

In this study, we aim to address the phenomenon of digital piracy by utilizing the Theory of Interpersonal Behavior (TIB), and testing the model on a sample of adult Internet users. Following the basic premise of the TIB, we suggest an individual’s piracy intention is influenced by perceived consequences (benefits and risk), affect, and norm susceptibility. Further, we hypothesize that piracy intention together with subjective knowledge leads to actual piracy behavior. Based on survey data from Slovenia, we show that piracy intention and subjective knowledge influence digital piracy behavior, while perceived positive consequences, affect, and norm susceptibility significantly shape an …

We Are What We Ate: Southern Food And Southern Cooking, Alyssa Rogers Nov 2016

We Are What We Ate: Southern Food And Southern Cooking, Alyssa Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

Southern cooking is fluid–ever-changing, influential, and influenced by both Southerners and non-Southerners alike. In this thesis, I explore what constitutes Southern cooking. The foods, cooking methods, and acquisition of foodstuffs and ingredients influence Southerners as cooks and the communities we live in. In the following pages, I’ve connected primary research via interviews with existing literature about Southern foods, cooking, techniques, lifestyles, and cultures. My primary research is derived from authentic interviews with real Southerners. The results from my research are not groundbreaking, but they do serve to help Southerners understand their relationship to and with Southern food and Southern cooking.
