5-Point Scales: Five Points Away From Beating Behavior Problems, Michelle Bolling
5-Point Scales: Five Points Away From Beating Behavior Problems, Michelle Bolling
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Five-point scales have been used in treating pain, anger, anxiety and educationally for children on the Autism Spectrum. Because 5-point scales are visual and match abstract ideas with numbers, they are well-suited for use with children of all ages. They can easily be implemented in a variety of settings, including by parents at home. Participants will learn how to develop, use, and monitor 5-point scale interventions; see different case studies applications; and explore applications within an RTI/MTSS framework. Case studies for individual and class-wide intervention from grades PK – 12 will be shared.

“Pbis Teams Suggest Training For Secondary And Tertiary Prevention”, Kiarra Givhan, Kathryn Leavitt
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) uses a multi-tiered, problem-solving framework with evidence-based strategies to promote positive student outcomes (Sugai and Simonsen, 2012, p.2). The secondary (Tier 2) and tertiary (Tier 3) levels of PBIS provide support to students who are not responding to school-wide and class-wide strategies. To get a better idea of how Tiers 2 and 3 are implemented, and what could make implementation better, a qualitative study was conducted with PBIS Teams. PBIS Teams represent an integral part of implementation, and it is important to gain insight from those who play such a role.
This presentation will …

Fba's And Pbis: Using Fba's As Part Of Your Pbis Process To Improve Problem Student Behavior, Maggie Kjer Phd, Blake Dubose
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
The FBA Process for students with challenging behaviors raises concerns for whether this is beyond the scope of an educator’s skills and capabilities. This workshop will provide an overview of the FBA process and explore a PBIS team-based approach that leads to a more practical and efficient method for assessing common behavior problems in school settings.
The presenters will demonstrate how using FBA’s within the PBIS framework results in better outcomes for teacher training and improved problem student behavior. Additionally, the presenters will demonstrate a digital tool for conducting relevant, comprehensive FBA’s.

A Fair View: The Connection Between Pbis And Title I, Brian Mincey, Shoni Pittman, Vaneisa Benjamin, Vincent Ervin
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
This presentation offers a Title I school's early implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS). Initial focus will apply to the universal (Tier I) application, where a shared leadership model utilized the collective experiences of educators and school-based mental health professionals. Secondary discussions will highlight the importance of community-based involvement, with primary examples noted in state-level representatives.
Additional topics will highlight the use of the Second Step Curriculum in instilling self-regulation and social skills at a Title I school. This will accompany particular strategies employed in various settings in the school setting (e.g., classroom, cafeteria, hallways, etc.). Participants will …
Learning Social Skills Through Natural And Paid Supports, Miyah Sundermeyer
Learning Social Skills Through Natural And Paid Supports, Miyah Sundermeyer
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
I had moved to Atlanta the age of 21 in 2003 with my aunt. Though I was 21 physically, emotionally I behaved at the level of a 14-year-old. I also lacked basic social skills and maturity. While others around me often pointed it out, I could not understand what they were talking about. So my aunt often role played by showing me how I would act. That got me interested in wanting to improve my social skills.
Meanwhile I had attending various programs at the Emory Autism Center where Toni Thomas and Dr, Lauren Castriota taught the difference between what …

Multi-Level Predictors Of Obesity And Diet In Multi-Ethnic Populations, Tali Elfassy
Multi-Level Predictors Of Obesity And Diet In Multi-Ethnic Populations, Tali Elfassy
Open Access Dissertations
The obesity epidemic in the United States is a major public health issue. Poor socio-economic conditions such as poverty or living under financial stress may adversely influence health outcomes such as obesity, and often disproportionately impact ethnic minority populations. Further, individuals living in poverty are often exposed to environments that promote unhealthy diet and obesity. Such obesogenic environments are characterized by increased exposure to foods high in sodium and low in potassium which may also be independently associated with obesity. Yet these associations have not been adequately explored, especially among ethnic minority populations. The current dissertation seeks to explore: 1) …
How Do You Like Your Books: Print Or Digital? An Analysis On Print And E-Book Usage At The Graduate School Of Education, Dana Haugh
Library Faculty Publications
The shift from physical materials to digital holdings has slowly infiltrated libraries across the globe, and librarians are struggling to make sense of these intangible, and sometimes fleeting, resources. Materials budgets have shifted to accommodate large journal and database subscriptions, single-title article access, and most recently, e-book holdings. This analysis measures the impact of digital acquisitions in an academic setting during a highly transformative period of library practices. The study finds that both electronic and print books are valuable to the academic research community at GSE.

Self-Care Behaviors Of Women Living With Heart Failure: A Mixed Methods Study, Susan Bartos
Self-Care Behaviors Of Women Living With Heart Failure: A Mixed Methods Study, Susan Bartos
Doctoral Dissertations
Self-care is paramount to the successful management of heart failure. Although recent trends in heart failure have shown a decline in hospitalizations and emergency room visits, observational unit admissions related to heart failure exacerbations continue to rise (Albert, 2016). Although nearly half (47%) of the heart failure population is female women are historically under-represented in heart failure research that guide best practice recommendations (Pressler, 2016). Therefore, the primary aim of this mixed methods study was to identify differences in women who demonstrate an adequate heart failure self-care maintenance (score >70) behaviors as compared to women who score inadequately (score < 69) as measured by the Self-Care of Heart Failure Index (SCHFI) version 6.2. Quantitative data revealed a significant, parabolic relationship between heart failure self-care maintenance and self-care confidence scores. Qualitative analysis suggested that assuming an active or passive role in heart failure self-care plays an important role in women’s heart failure self-care maintenance. Mixed methods analysis revealed high heart failure self-care confidence levels may not reflect an adequate level of heart failure self-care maintenance behaviors. Further research is required to expand on the factors that were found to both facilitate and impede heart failure self-care and to continue to improve health outcomes for women with heart failure.
Identifying And Preventing Insider Threats, Matthew D. Waters
Identifying And Preventing Insider Threats, Matthew D. Waters
Honors Theses
Insider threats, or attacks against a company from within, are a pressing issue both domestically and internationally. Frequencies of these threats increase each year adding to the overall importance of further research analysis. In fact, many case studies have been conducted which state that these employees who participate in insider attacks tend to exhibit certain personality and characteristic traits, as well as certain observable behaviors, that would indicate to other employees that an attack is imminent. It is hypothesized that companies will be able to take a more preventative stance of security as opposed to a reactive stance by identifying …
Domestic Sex Trafficking Of Minors In The United States The Disparity Between Federal Anti-Trafficking Laws And State Prostitution Legislation, Rachel N. Rippey
Domestic Sex Trafficking Of Minors In The United States The Disparity Between Federal Anti-Trafficking Laws And State Prostitution Legislation, Rachel N. Rippey
Senior Honors Theses
The United States has made strides in deterring the crime of sex trafficking of minors. Within the past 16 years, the central piece of legislation, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA), has seen numerous reauthorizations, each one expanding from the one that precedes it. However, with its original intent focused on prosecuting international traffickers, the language cited is ambiguous. Furthermore, the federal anti- trafficking laws are inconsistent with state prostitution laws due to differences in age of consent. Because of this, a minor who is under federal law a victim may be prosecuted as a criminal under state law. This …

Digital technology is increasingly used in humanitarian action and promises to improve the health and social well-being of populations affected by both acute and protracted crises. We set out to (1) review the current landscape of digital technologies used by humanitarian actors and affected populations, (2) examine their impact on health and well-being of affected populations, and (3) consider the opportunities for and challenges faced by users of these technologies. Through a systematic search of academic databases and reports, weidentified 50digital technologies used by humanitarian actors, and/or populations affected by crises. We organized them according to the stage of the humanitarian …

The Role Of Interdisciplinary Scholarship And Research To Meet The Challenges Facing Agriculture In The 21st Century, Joshua Jay Miller
The Role Of Interdisciplinary Scholarship And Research To Meet The Challenges Facing Agriculture In The 21st Century, Joshua Jay Miller
Doctor of Plant Health Program: Dissertations and Student Research
Throughout human history, scientific advancements have increased our understanding of the physical world. However, as our breadth of knowledge has increased, scholarship and research have become increasingly more specialized in order to add to the body of knowledge. University structures encourage this specialization through disciplinary learning and discovery. Although this model is necessary to continue growing the body of knowledge, the complex issues facing humanity, especially in regards to agriculture, require solutions that no single discipline can provide. These issues require an interdisciplinary approach to integrate the insights across multiple disciplines. Interdisciplinarity can be achieved through collaborative processes, but these …
