What Makes A Veteran-Friendly College Or University Campus?, Donald W-R Allen
What Makes A Veteran-Friendly College Or University Campus?, Donald W-R Allen
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The United States Armed Services has produced some of the finest men and women soldiers in history. After their service, some pursue institutions of higher learning to meet the needs of their continued excellence. Some colleges and universities have failed to meet the slightest requirements of the veteran student: understanding, compassion, respect and college credits for military training and experiential learning. The chapters inside this capstone confirms that veterans must be accepted as a very important part of the campus population. When veteran’s complete college and graduate, they have strategically and successfully completed another important undertaking. To look at a …

It has been well documented that cognitive conflict is sensitive to the relative proportion of congruent and incongruent trials. However, few studies have examined whether affective conflict processing is modulated as a function of proportion congruency (PC). To address this question we recorded eventrelated potentials (ERP) while subjects performed both cognitive and affective face-word Stroop tasks. By varying the proportion of congruent and incongruent trials in each block, we examined the extent to which PC impacts both cognitive and affective conflict control at different temporal stages. Results showed that in the cognitive task an anteriorly localized early N2 component occurred …
The Effect Of Teaching Strategies And Learning Environment On Certification Exam Pass Rates In Dietetic Education, Debra Head
Theses and Dissertations
The obligation for preparing competent graduates begins with an educational experience in an environment that promotes optimal learning. An important outcome of successful health professions education is the passage of the certification exam. The objective of this study was to evaluate learning outcomes and teaching strategies and the effect on certification exam pass rate in dietetic education programs. A non-experimental associational cross-sectional mixed methods design was chosen for the study in order to gather objective data through the use of the previously validated Constructivist Learning Environment Survey. A 30 item electronic survey was administered to faculty in dietetic education programs …

Effectiveness Of Online Health Communities: Assessment Of Social Support And Stress, Amit Saha
Theses and Dissertations
With increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among the younger generation, there is a shortage of adequate resources to deliver care for the individuals dealing with autism. Families dealing with autism face enormous economic costs and emotional stress to provide care for personnel diagnosed with ASD. Globally, almost two billion people use social media regularly to connect and stay in touch with their friends, family, and acquaintances irrespective of distance. For the families dealing with autism, social media provide an open and easily accessible platform to share, gather and exchange information. Systematic analysis of this extensive interaction among autism …

University Student-Athletes’ Experiences Of Facilitators And Barriers To Contribution: A Narrative Account, Colin J. Deal, Martin Camiré
University Student-Athletes’ Experiences Of Facilitators And Barriers To Contribution: A Narrative Account, Colin J. Deal, Martin Camiré
The Qualitative Report
University student-athletes’ contributions in the form of volunteering, community engagement, and civic engagement have been the subject of recent research; however, no studies have specifically examined the factors that facilitate or serve as barriers to contribution in this population. As such, the purpose of this study is to explore the facilitators and barriers relating to university student-athletes’ contributions. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight university student-athletes (two males, six females) between 18 and 21 years of age (M = 19.25) from two Canadian universities. The analysis led to the identification of two qualitatively distinct profiles regarding how facilitators and …
Sustainable Feedback: Students’ And Tutors’ Perceptions, Gerry Geitz, Desirée Joosten - Ten Brinke, Paul A. Kirschner
Sustainable Feedback: Students’ And Tutors’ Perceptions, Gerry Geitz, Desirée Joosten - Ten Brinke, Paul A. Kirschner
The Qualitative Report
Feedback has been shown to substantially influence students’ learning. However, not everything characterized as feedback is effective. Sustainable feedback places students in an active role in which they generate and use feedback from peers, self or others and aims at developing lifelong learning skills. First-year higher education students and tutors received sustainable feedback during their problem-based learning. To gain insights into how they perceived the sustainable feedback, students were probed via structured, open-ended questionnaires. While all participants positively valued the feedback, their personal characteristics, previous experience with feedback and concomitant perceptions appeared to have greatly influenced both tutors’ and students’ …
Instructional Motivations: What Can We Learn From Homeschooling Families?, Jesse Thomas
Instructional Motivations: What Can We Learn From Homeschooling Families?, Jesse Thomas
The Qualitative Report
Some educational theorists have believed that the beneficial aspects of home education will eventually find their way into mainstream educational contexts. The purpose of this paper was to extract the motivations behind homeschooling instructional decisions. This study was built on surveys and interviews from over 1000 homeschooling parents across the United States. Participants were asked about the reason for their instructional routines. Instructional motivations reported included a child’s particular learning style, a parent’s personal preference, a child’s interests, community resources, experience, faith, family reasons, special goals, and special needs. These motivations may also represent those of public school parents, thus …
Focus Group Data Saturation: A New Approach To Data Analysis, Mary E. Hancock Phd, Rnc-Ob, Linda Amankwaa Phd, Rn, Faan, Maria A. Revell Phd, Msn, Rn Coi, Dale Mueller Edd, Msn, Nea-Bc
Focus Group Data Saturation: A New Approach To Data Analysis, Mary E. Hancock Phd, Rnc-Ob, Linda Amankwaa Phd, Rn, Faan, Maria A. Revell Phd, Msn, Rn Coi, Dale Mueller Edd, Msn, Nea-Bc
The Qualitative Report
The qualitative research “gold standard” for quality research is data saturation. The limited literature on reporting data saturation and transparency in qualitative research has supported an inconsistent research standard suggesting researchers have not adequately reported data saturation to promote transparency (O’Reilly & Parker, 2012). Confusion regarding how to analyze qualitative data to achieve data saturation, how to write clear qualitative research findings, and present these findings in a usable manner continues (Sandelowski & Leeman, 2012). A phenomenological asynchronous online focus group using WordPress® was employed to answer the research question. Based on the current literature on the topic of focus …
Longshoremen's Negotiation Of Masculinity And The Middle Class In 1950s Popular Culture, Tomaro I. Taylor
Longshoremen's Negotiation Of Masculinity And The Middle Class In 1950s Popular Culture, Tomaro I. Taylor
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis considers mid-20th century portrayals of working-class longshoremen’s masculinity within the context of emerging middle-class gender constructions. I argue that although popular culture presents a roughly standardized depiction of longshoremen as “manly men,” these portrayals are significantly nuanced to demonstrate the difficulties working-class men faced as they attempted to navigate socio-cultural and socio-economic shifts related to class and the performance of their male gender. Specifically, I consider depictions of longshoremen’s disruptive masculinity, male identity formation, and masculine-male growth as reactions to paradigmatic shifts in American masculinity. Using three aspects of longshoremen’s non-work lives presented in A View from …
The Spatial Dynamics Of New Firm Births During An Economic Crisis: The Case Of Great Britain, 2004–2012, P Bishop, D Shilcof
The Spatial Dynamics Of New Firm Births During An Economic Crisis: The Case Of Great Britain, 2004–2012, P Bishop, D Shilcof
Plymouth Business School
Spatial variations in entrepreneurial activity have been shown to be a time persistent phenomenon in many countries. This paper analyses how these spatial variations have been affected by the recent financial crisis within the context of theories of regional resilience and adaptability. The analysis applies Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis techniques to data on firm births across Local Authority Districts of Great Britain during the period 2004–2012. The results demonstrate that, whilst the overall shape of the spatial distribution of firm births remained persistent, there is evidence of an increase in regional inequality. This is primarily associated with a divergence between …

Reading Strategies That Motivate English As A Second Language Learners: An Examination Of English As A Second Language Teacher Perceptions, Kristine N. Howell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine teachers' perceptions of motivational literacy instructional strategies for use with English as a second language learners (ESLs). Self determination theory's basic psychological needs thoery and organismic integration theory acted as the lens through which this topic was explored. A Likert-type quantitative survey was used to produce a ranked list of motivational metacognitive reading strategies using a chi-square goodness of fit test with effect sizes and descriptive statistical analysis (M and SD). Relative frequencies were calculated to compare strategies relative importance to teachers perceived frequency of use. Metacognitive reading strategy category trends …
We Don't Eat Babies: Atheists' Individual And Collective Resistance To Stigma, Degan Michelle Loren
We Don't Eat Babies: Atheists' Individual And Collective Resistance To Stigma, Degan Michelle Loren
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Existing research on Atheists is sparse in social sciences and focused primarily on survey data regarding attitudes towards Atheists and the types of discrimination they suffer. The lived experiences of Atheists have been ignored almost entirely. Drawing on Autoethnographic materials and 12 life-history interviews, this project documented the ways that individuals who self-identify as Atheist understood the stigmas attributed to them and their responses to it. Some of the behaviors were framed as “techniques of information control” such as “compartmentalizing” and “passing.” Others were framed as “Identity Politics” which they claimed to engage in to resist, minimize, or eliminate stigma …
Bright Along The Body, Ashley Michelle Roach
Bright Along The Body, Ashley Michelle Roach
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Bright Along the Body is a collection of poetry that explores the nature of desire within the liminal space of marriage. The poems fuse domestic, garden, and urban wildlife imagery to explore the speaker's conflicting physical, spiritual, and emotional desires. The speaker subverts her own longings by cultivating a psychological space that is beautiful and lonely, representing transcendence that may be read as dissociation. Feminist themes of safety and independence inform the collection, which is sectioned in three parts to represent conflict, interiority, and resolution. The poems are stylistically diverse and music-rich, showing affinity for both contemporary poetry and tradition.

Publications and Research
In 2010, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) launched the Community-Based Violence Prevention (CBVP) program to reduce youth violence through targeted community-level initiatives. The program offered grants to cities for implementing evidence-based strategies, such as Cure Violence and the Boston Gun Project, to address high-risk youth involvement in violence. The John Jay College Research and Evaluation Center evaluated the program’s impact on five recipient cities: Brooklyn, NY; Denver, CO; Newark, NJ; Oakland, CA; and Washington, DC. The evaluation focused on the effectiveness of these interventions in reducing violence among youth and young adults.
Modern Critiques Of Judicial Empathy: A Revised Intellectual History, Brenner M. Fissell
Modern Critiques Of Judicial Empathy: A Revised Intellectual History, Brenner M. Fissell
Faculty Publications
The role of “empathy” haunts recent debates about how judges make decisions. Remarkably, however, the intellectual origins of scholarly resistance to empathic judging remain poorly understood. This Article fills that gap. Through historical and theoretical study, it reveals the ways in which the modern anti-emphatic consensus can be seen as a mutated descendent of late-nineteenth century formalism. This Article also marks an irony with significant implications for the empathy debate: Although the anti-empathic view was born of formalism, it has drifted from its source such that it would almost certainly be condemned by the very formalist scholars from whom it …

Cortisol In Human Milk Predicts Child Bmi, Jennifer Hahn-Holbrook, Tran Bao Le, Anna Chung, Elyssia Poggi Davis, Laura M. Glynn
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Objective—Breastfeeding is linked to lower rates of childhood obesity. Human milk contains cortisol, known to regulate glucose storage and metabolism. We aimed to test the hypothesis that early exposure to cortisol in human breast milk helps to modulate infant BMI trajectories over the first two years of life.
Methods—Growth curve modeling was used to examine whether infant exposure to cortisol in human milk at 3 months predicted changes in child body mass index percentile (BMIP) at 6, 12, and 24 months of age in 51 breastfeeding mother-child pairs.
Results—Infants exposed to higher milk cortisol levels at 3 …

Correlates Of Satisfaction With Life For People Who Identify As Transgender And Sexual Minority, Christopher C. Bober, Kristen L. Suing, Dustin K. Shepler
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Researchers have focused on understanding factors such as resiliency, medical concerns, and coping skills in the lives of transgender and gender-nonconforming people. However, little research has examined how transgender and gender-nonconforming people cognitively evaluate their own lives. Furthermore, many people who identify as transgender or gender-nonconforming also report a sexual minority identity status. In this study, we sought to understand how aspects of sexual self-concept (i.e., sexual esteem and sexual anxiety), internalized homonegativity, and level of outness about sexual identity correlated to self-appraisals of satisfaction with life (SWL) in a sample of transgender and gender-nonconforming people who identified as sexual …
Teaching In The Cracks: Using Familiar Pedagogy To Advance Lgbtq-Inclusive Curriculum, Michelle L. Page
Teaching In The Cracks: Using Familiar Pedagogy To Advance Lgbtq-Inclusive Curriculum, Michelle L. Page
Education Publications
English language arts teachers and other literacy educators have the opportunity to create more positive and more inclusive school experiences for gender‐ and sexual‐minority students, but many hesitate to transform their curricula and practices because of fear of community protest. To support educators who feel vulnerable or constrained, this article summarizes challenges facing gender‐ and sexual‐minority students and then describes the benefits and limitations of a variety of familiar instructional approaches that teachers can use to make curricula more inclusive, ultimately reducing isolation and invisibility of LGBTQIA students and experiences.

Asset Price Momentum And Monetary Policy: Time-Varying Parameter Estimation Of Taylor Rules, Anastasios G. Malliaris, Ramaprasad Bhar
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In this article, we consider two new independent variables as inputs to the Taylor Rule. These are the equity and housing momentum variables and are introduced to investigate the potential usefulness of these two variables in guiding the Fed to lean against potential bubbles. Such effectiveness cannot adequately be evaluated if the Taylor Rule estimation follows the standard regression methodology that has been criticized in the literature to be econometrically incorrect. Using a time-varying parameter estimation methodology, we find that equity momentum as an input in the Taylor Rule does not contribute to changes in Fed Funds. However, the housing …

Breaking The Silence: The Story Of One In Four, Janice V. Leister
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Professional Projects
The United States currently ranks 25th in the world for stillbirths and 26th for infant mortality rate. The rate of these deaths is more than half of other developed countries, and what is more troubling is that the numbers aren’t decreasing at a rate that shows any indication of real change. Many attribute this lack of progress to the shockingly absent research in the subject of stillbirths.
This research explored the issue of pregnancy loss, specifically stillbirth losses. This research was done in an effort to address how little pregnancy loss is reported on and researched. In addition, …
Husserl’S Concept Of Position-Taking And Second Nature, Alejandro Arango
Husserl’S Concept Of Position-Taking And Second Nature, Alejandro Arango
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
I argue that Husserl’s concept of position-taking, Stellungnahme, is adequate to understand the idea of second nature as an issue of philosophical anthropology. I claim that the methodological focus must be the living subject that acts and lives among others, and that the notion of second nature must respond to precisely this fundamental active character of subjectivity. The appropriate concept should satisfy two additional desiderata. First, it should be able to develop alongside the biological, psychological, and social individual development. Second, it should be able to underlie the vast diversity of human beings within and across communities. As possible candidates, …

Diminished Quality Of Life Among Women Affected By Ebola, Jessi Hanson, Alexis Decosimo, Megan Quinn
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
This article analyzes data collected from Liberian women afflicted by the Ebola virus disease, survivors of the virus and noninfected persons living in Ebola-affected homes. This research is one of the first statistical analyses examining factors diminishing quality of life: negative experiences, stigma, and psychosocial symptoms among females affected by the virus after the outbreak. The research presents a thorough literature review, including research related to other infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS, to inform the gap in studies on Ebola’s effects on quality of life. Women who are Ebola virus disease survivors demonstrate significant differences in stigma and psychosocial stress when …
