Ambiguityvis: Visualization Of Ambiguity In Graph Layouts, Yong Wang, Qiaomu Shen, Zhiguang Zhou, Min Zhu, Sixiao Yang, Qu Huamin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Node-link diagrams provide an intuitive way to explore networks and have inspired a large number of automated graph layout strategies that optimize aesthetic criteria. However, any particular drawing approach cannot fully satisfy all these criteria simultaneously, producing drawings with visual ambiguities that can impede the understanding of network structure. To bring attention to these potentially problematic areas present in the drawing. this paper presents a technique that highlights common types of visual ambiguities: ambiguous spatial relationships between nodes and edges, visual overlap between community structures, and ambiguity in edge bundling and metanodes. Metrics, including newly proposed metrics for abnormal edge …

An Extended Study On Addressing Defender Teamwork While Accounting For Uncertainty In Attacker Defender Games Using Iterative Dec-Mdps, Eric Shieh, Albert Xin Jiang, Amulya Yadav, Pradeep Varakantham, Milind Tambe

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multi-agent teamwork and defender-attacker security games are two areas that are currently receiving significant attention within multi-agent systems research. Unfortunately, despite the need for effective teamwork among multiple defenders, little has been done to harness the teamwork research in security games. The problem that this paper seeks to solve is the coordination of decentralized defender agents in the presence of uncertainty while securing targets against an observing adversary. To address this problem, we offer the following novel contributions in this paper: (i) New model of security games with defender teams that coordinate under uncertainty; (ii) New algorithm based on column …

Investigating The Influence Of Offline Friendship On Twitter Networking Behaviors, Young Soo Kim, Felicia Natali, Feida Zhu, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We investigate the influence of offline friendship in three specific areas of Twitter networking behaviors: (a) network structure, (b) Twitter content and (c) interaction on Twitter. We observe some interesting findings through the empirical analysis of 2193 pairs of users who are online friends. When these pairs of users know each other offline, they are more likely to (1) respond to the online gesture of friendship from their friend, (2) share mutual online friends, (3) distribute and gather information in their friend’s Twitter network, (4) pay attention to their friend’s tweets, (5) post tweets that might be of interest to …

Information Source Detection Via Maximum A Posteriori Estimation, Biao Chang, Feida Zhu, Enhong Chen, Qi. Liu Jan 2016

Information Source Detection Via Maximum A Posteriori Estimation, Biao Chang, Feida Zhu, Enhong Chen, Qi. Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The problem of information source detection, whose goal is to identify the source of a piece of information from a diffusion process (e.g., computer virus, rumor, epidemic, and so on), has attracted ever-increasing attention from research community in recent years. Although various methods have been proposed, such as those based on centrality, spectral and belief propagation, the existing solutions still suffer from high time complexity and inadequate effectiveness. To this end, we revisit this problem in the paper and present a comprehensive study from the perspective of likelihood approximation. Different from many previous works, we consider both infected and uninfected …

Transitions In Interface Objects: Searching Databases, Tim Gamble, Jon May Jan 2016

Transitions In Interface Objects: Searching Databases, Tim Gamble, Jon May

School of Psychology

Two experiments demonstrate that a list-like database interface which benefits from the persistence of contextual information does not show the same degree of benefit of collocating objects over display changes that has been previously observed in a map-searching study. This provides some support for the claim that the nature of the task must be taken into account in choosing how to design dynamic displays. We discuss the benefit of basing design principles on theoretical models derived from film cutting methods used in cinematography, so that they can be extended to novel design situations.

Proactive Strategies In Personal Dose Monitoring, Prevention And Mitigation, Manish Kumar Sharma Jan 2016

Proactive Strategies In Personal Dose Monitoring, Prevention And Mitigation, Manish Kumar Sharma

Doctoral Dissertations

"At certain threshold, nuclear radiation (like x-rays and gamma-rays) may adversely impact the health of living tissues. The exposure to these radiations in nuclear facilities is measured by devices called dosimeters. The devices are generally worn on the torso and are monitored by health physics division to report the radiation dose received by the personnel. However, this approach is not proactive--since the dosimeters reflect the dose that has already been absorbed in the body of the wearer.

This work presents a scheme to proactively avoid large dose acquisition at radiation-prone facilities. The work was divided into three major segments: (i) …

Palynological Studies Of Holocene Lake Sediments In The Missouri Ozarks, Robert D. Haselwander Jan 2016

Palynological Studies Of Holocene Lake Sediments In The Missouri Ozarks, Robert D. Haselwander

Doctoral Dissertations

"Five small lakes in southeast Missouri (Frisco, Pine Forest, and Bray Area lakes [Phelps County], and Cypress and Blue ponds [Bollinger County]) were cored for paleolimnological studies. Cores were evaluated for their sedimentology, palynology, and geochemistry. In two of these lakes (Bray Area and Pine Forest lakes) the planktonic algae were also studied in the water column, along with ecological parameters. Algae in the sediments were compared to algae in the water to understand the resistance of different species to decay, and a suggested methodology for this work is described. Reconstructions of the past environments around each lake were created …

Cable Analysis For Electromagnetic Compatibility Issues, Guanghua Li Jan 2016

Cable Analysis For Electromagnetic Compatibility Issues, Guanghua Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation consists of three papers. In the first paper, a high-sensitivity resonant electric field probe was designed, consisting of an LC resonator loaded by quarter-wave transformers. At the resonant frequency of 1.577 GHz, the measured |S21| from a matched trace to the resonant probe was approximately 6.6 dB higher than that of an equivalently sized broadband probe.

In the second paper, a method for creating a simple SPICE model is proposed such that the SPICE model allows prediction of radiated emissions in component level tests. The radiation from the ground connections between the cables and return plane …

Student Preconceptions Of Arid, Urban Watershed Management And How Experiential Learning Might Contribute To Conceptual Change., Rachel Aliyah Thomas Jan 2016

Student Preconceptions Of Arid, Urban Watershed Management And How Experiential Learning Might Contribute To Conceptual Change., Rachel Aliyah Thomas

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Voting-aged, freshman-level university students attending college in urban Southwest US cities are living in what is considered one of the most 'climate-challenged' regions of the entire country. Such students may not understand the issues and ways to manage an urban watershed. For instance, the Southwest faces climate change drought predictions and naturally occurring water scarcity. Urban populations continue to climb, pushing up demands on already scarce water resources. Urban watersheds present specific challenges, such as impermeable surfaces. Students need to understand these urban watershed management challenges and climate change stressors. I conducted a study in an introductory environmental science class …

Assessing The Geomorphological Effects Of Ungulate Exclosures On High Elevation Streams In The Valles Caldera National Preserve, New Mexico, Ryan Kelly Jan 2016

Assessing The Geomorphological Effects Of Ungulate Exclosures On High Elevation Streams In The Valles Caldera National Preserve, New Mexico, Ryan Kelly

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

A catchment-scale approach to the connection between the terrestrial environment and aquatic ecosystems is important because of the context that it provides into stream form and function. A streams physical and chemical qualities are often delineated, in large part, by the surrounding catchment's terrestrial properties and features, such as geology, soils, vegetation and topography (Van Horn et al. 2012). For example, losses in catchment vegetation can result in a change in terrestrial organic carbon inputs into streams (Bunn et al. 1999). Four important dimensions of connection exist when describing the physical, chemical, and energetic interactions between the stream itself and …

Linking Forests To Faucets: Investigating Alternative Approaches For Securing Long-Term Funding For Watershed Restoration In New Mexico., Edward Neil Mccorkindale Iv Jan 2016

Linking Forests To Faucets: Investigating Alternative Approaches For Securing Long-Term Funding For Watershed Restoration In New Mexico., Edward Neil Mccorkindale Iv

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Due to a mix of inter-related human and natural factors, such as climate change, drought, beetle damage, 20th century fire suppression policy and associated hazardous fuels build-up, and the expansive growth of the Wildland-Urban Interface, many montane forests in New Mexico and elsewhere in the western United States have become increasingly susceptible to high-severity wildfires. Critical sources for public drinking water systems often originate in montane forests, where wildland fires can alter hydrologic systems and degrade watersheds, while creating significant runoff, debris, and water quality impacts downstream. As the impact of high severity wildfires expands significantly beyond the proximal burn …

Effects Of The Ground Heat Flux On Snowpack Ablation In A Semi-Arid Mountain Climate, Chad Mickschl Jan 2016

Effects Of The Ground Heat Flux On Snowpack Ablation In A Semi-Arid Mountain Climate, Chad Mickschl

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

In anticipation of warmer temperatures, receding snowlines, and increasing water demands, it will be important for water managers to understand how changes in snowpack depth and distribution will affect available runoff. Mountain snowpacks make up the largest component of runoff in mountain regions generating water supply for a host of downstream users. As climate warming persists, mountainous areas with traditionally deeper snowpacks will shift towards a shallower, more transitional regime. Transitional lower elevation snowpacks will begin to experience an increasing number of melt-off and ripening periods throughout the course of a winter. To better predict changes in water resources, it …

Measuring The Effect Of Urban Development On Runoff Volumes In Albuquerque, Nm, Rachel Hertzman Jan 2016

Measuring The Effect Of Urban Development On Runoff Volumes In Albuquerque, Nm, Rachel Hertzman

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Stormwater runoff volumes increase with urbanization, at a significant cost to the environment (Walsh, et al., 2005; Dhakal & Chevalier, 2016; Warnemuende, Shuster, Smith, & Bonta, 2003; Dougherty, et al., 2007; Jacobson, 2011; Natural Resources Conservation Service, 1986; Masoud, 2015). Urban development alters soil, pollutant loads in runoff, geomorphology, channelization, and topography—determinative factors in conducting stormwater away from habitable areas and filtering toxins from the domestic water supply (Sutton, Anderson, Elvidge, Tuttle, & Ghosh, 2009; Hale, Turnbull, Earl, Childers, & Grimm, 2015; Goldshleger, Maor, Garzuzi, & Asaf, 2015; Schueler, Fraley-McNeal, & Cappiella, 2009; Gremillion, Gonyeau, & Wanielista, 2000; Furusho, Andrieu, …

Treatment Of Tears Of The Superior Labrum Anterior And Posterior: A Review, Luke W. Buthuis Jan 2016

Treatment Of Tears Of The Superior Labrum Anterior And Posterior: A Review, Luke W. Buthuis

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Tears to the superior labrum anterior and posterior (SLAP) are common injuries of the shoulder, and patients with these types of lesions are treated regularly by both general and sports-specialized orthopaedic surgeons. The causes, diagnosis, and effective treatment of these wounds have been examined extensively in the past several decades, owing partially to the development of arthroscopic techniques. Because clinical understanding has thus undergone frequent and notable changes, no standard method exists for current treatment. To help identify effective techniques for treating isolated SLAP tears, I reviewed the anatomy of the labrum and associated range of motion and stability of …

Causes, Evaluation, And Treatment Of Instability Of The Patellofemoral Joint Of The Knee: A Review, Michael J. Hopson Jan 2016

Causes, Evaluation, And Treatment Of Instability Of The Patellofemoral Joint Of The Knee: A Review, Michael J. Hopson

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Instability of the patellofemoral (PF) joint of the knee is typically caused by chronic atraumatic injuries and inciting traumatic events. Anatomically, bony and softtissue structures surrounding the PF joint and extensor mechanism contribute to overall stability of the area, which results in efficient kinematic function at the PF articulation. Furthermore, physiological, genetic, anatomical, and demographical factors may affect the development and progression of PF joint instability. Treatment techniques have varied owing to individual factors that may have influence on pathological features of the injury. Nonoperative treatment has predominantly focused on strengthening of the quadriceps and vastus medialis by coordinated, closed …

Psychosocial And Demographic Factors Influencing Pain Scores Of Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis, Lauren A. Eberly, Dustin L. Richter, George D. Comerci, Deana M. Mercer, Gary W. Mlady, Daniel C. Wascher, Robert C. Schenck Jr

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Background: Noted levels of pain in patients with diagnosed osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee are commonly assessed by using a numeric scoring system. However, the results of pain levels in patients with knee OA may be influenced by factors other than the patient’s actual physical discomfort or disease severity, including demographic and psychosocial variables. We retrospectively examined 355 patients with knee OA who had reported associated pain levels using a 0- to 10-point rating scale.

Methods: Data obtained from the medical records of patients were Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade, demographic characteristics, body mass index (BMI), concomitant disorders, drug use, alcohol use, …

Postoperative Complications In Patients With Trapeziometacarpal Joint Osteoarthritis Treated With Carpometacarpal Arthroplasty: Report Of Two Cases, Jessica A. Avila, Taylor H. Parnall, Ericka L. Charley, Lauren N. Mercer, Elizabeth A. Mikola, Deana M. Mercer

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Osteoarthritis of the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, specifically, of the thumb trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint, is a common condition in older women. Complications associated with surgical treatment range from transient tendinitis to wrist instability. We present two patients in whom complications developed after undergoing CMC arthroplasty. In one patient, rupture of the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) was noted postoperatively after using a combination of ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition with complete trapeziectomy. The second patient presented with a flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon that was tethered with sutures, in which surgical release of the entrapped FPL tendon led to successful treatment. In …

Simultaneous Dislocation Of Both Interphalangeal Joints In The Same Digit Of A 56-Year-Old Woman With Workers’ Compensation: A Case Report, Danika Z. Boomer, Kristin M. Loker, Deana M. Mercer Jan 2016

Simultaneous Dislocation Of Both Interphalangeal Joints In The Same Digit Of A 56-Year-Old Woman With Workers’ Compensation: A Case Report, Danika Z. Boomer, Kristin M. Loker, Deana M. Mercer

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Dislocation of the interphalangeal (IP) joints of the fingers, particularly on the ulnar side of the hand, is common; however, simultaneous dislocation of both IP joints of the same finger is uncommon, and no studies have reported this injury in patients with workers’ compensation claims. We describe a 56-year-old woman with simultaneous dislocation of distal and proximal IP joints, who was successfully treated using a dorsal blocking splint followed by several months of undergoing occupational therapy. She had sustained the injury from a fall on the ground at work and was promptly treated with open reduction at an outside facility. …

Metasynchronous Rupture Of Both Achilles Tendons In A Patient Undergoing Statin Therapy: A Case Report, Paul J. Johnson, Richard A. Miller Jan 2016

Metasynchronous Rupture Of Both Achilles Tendons In A Patient Undergoing Statin Therapy: A Case Report, Paul J. Johnson, Richard A. Miller

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

In treating cholesterol-related cardiovascular diseases, statins are commonly used as preventative medication and are associated with few side effects. However, recent studies have described a connection between statins and development of tendinopathy. Similar research has noted bilateral rupture of the Achilles tendon, a rare injury, in patients undergoing statin therapy. We describe a 74-yearold man undergoing statin (ie, simvastatin) therapy who presented with pain and swelling in the right ankle after exertional-type activity. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a rupture of the Achilles tendon, with rupture of the left Achilles tendon identified 5 weeks later without any obvious trauma-related event. Nonoperative …

Simultaneous Presence Of A Transligamentous Recurrent Motor Branch Of The Median Nerve And Palmaris Profundus Tendon In A Patient With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Case Report, Dustin L. Larson, Moheb S. Moneim Jan 2016

Simultaneous Presence Of A Transligamentous Recurrent Motor Branch Of The Median Nerve And Palmaris Profundus Tendon In A Patient With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Case Report, Dustin L. Larson, Moheb S. Moneim

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most frequently encountered entrapment of the peripheral nerves in the upper extremity. Abnormal anatomical variations involving the recurrent motor branch of the median nerve and presence of a palmaris profundus tendon have been reported. We present a 53-year-old man in whom open carpal tunnel release led to complete resolution of numbness, tingling, and pain in the right hand by 1 month postoperatively. Intraoperatively, the simultaneous presence of a transligamentous recurrent motor branch of the median nerve and palmaris profundus tendon in the carpal tunnel was found and excised. Surgeons should be aware of the …

Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura In A 21-Year-Old Collegiate Football Player: A Case Report, James A. Leinhart, Shane P. Cass, Matthew A. Tennison, Ronica A. Martinez, Christopher A. Mcgrew

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Muscle cramps are commonly observed in collegiate athlete-patients; however, the condition may be a symptom of severe disorders. In particular, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) may be a possible diagnosis and involves a decreased number of platelets in the bloodstream. We describe a 21-year-old collegiate player of American football with initially presented with cramping of the neck, abdomen, and forearms. Although findings of physical examination were normal, results of laboratory tests indicated ITP, and the patient was hospitalized for 3 days until the platelet count increased. Because the levels continued to decrease at 6-month followup, splenectomy and use of rituximab agents …

Notable Findings Of A Preparticipation Examination In An 18-Year-Old Volleyball Player: A Case Report, Stuart J. Lisle, Christopher A. Mcgrew

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

The preparticipation examination (PPE) is commonly performed to screen for potentially detrimental health conditions in competitive athletes to help decrease rates of morbidity and mortality associated with participation in sports. However, the significant clinical impact of PPE in the United States has yet to be determined. We describe an 18-year-old female athlete who presented with dizziness and a right-sided limp at 8 days after initial injury. Findings of PPE examination indicated that she had unknowingly sustained a concussion during a volleyball match and continued to play, which resulted in injury to the right foot. Despite abnormal findings of magnetic resonance …
