Bullying Prevention In New York City Public Schools: School Safety Agents' Perceptions Of Their Roles, Gabriel R. Paez
Bullying Prevention In New York City Public Schools: School Safety Agents' Perceptions Of Their Roles, Gabriel R. Paez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Research on school-based bullying gives little attention to how school-based law enforcement personnel perceive their roles while addressing alleged and real acts of bullying, and whether their roles influence their decisions to get involved in instances of bullying. Since research neglects to assess the extent to which personal and contextual factors of law enforcement personnel assigned to schools affect how they perceive themselves in this role and their degree of involvement in instances of bullying, this study addresses two questions:
(1) How do New York City Police Department School Safety Agents (SSAs) in NYC public schools perceive their roles in …
Work-Related Resilience: Deaf Professionals’ Perspectives, Kim B. Kurz, Peter C. Hauser, Jason D. Listman
Work-Related Resilience: Deaf Professionals’ Perspectives, Kim B. Kurz, Peter C. Hauser, Jason D. Listman
JADARA
Ten Deaf professionals were interviewed about their perspectives on resilience risk and protective factors that affect career success. Thematic analysis revealed four main risk factors, all related to inequalities: (a) audism and linguistism; (b) networking challenges; (c) working harder than hearing peers; and, (d) promotion limitations. The Deaf community was described as a resilience protective factor that counters the work-related risk factors because it provides: (a) social support; (b) role models; and, (c) “Deaf can” optimism. The results have important implications for vocational rehabilitation, education and counseling programs as they highlight the protective factors Deaf employees need for work-related resilience.

Hazardous Materials Commodity Flow Study: Marion County, Oregon, Portland State University. Hatfield School Of Government. Center For Public Service, Stephanie Hawke, Aaron Kaufman, Robert Cheney

Hazardous materials are prevalent in all communities in the United States. They are stored and they are transported. Regardless of the method of transport, (for this study defined as: pipeline, rail, roadway, air, or water) hazardous materials are generally transported without incident. However, consequences of a hazmat transportation incident can be extreme with serious repercussions to public safety, life and wellbeing, the environment, and infrastructure. To plan for and mitigate these consequences, communities may choose to examine the transportation of hazardous materials through high risk areas – areas with sensitive ecosystems or high population – to better develop strategies.
Therefore, …

The Influence Of Balance Within The Competing Values Framework And School Academic Success On Teacher Retention, Charisse Gulosino, Louis Franceschini Iii, Portia Hardman
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
The primary aim of this study is to use the survey items from the TELL Tennessee Survey (2013) using the Competing Values Framework (CVF) to determine whether teachers' observations about a set of topically organized school climate dimensions and school performance levels are associated with their immediate professional plans. Using a three-by-two-level Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), we find that the effect of CVF “balance” and school performance level explain much of the variation in the percent of teachers who intend to stay at their current school, independent of the school’s student demographic characteristics. Specifically, the effect of having a balanced …

Case Study: Applying Communities Of Practice In Graduate Enrollment Management For A Cultural Interpretation Of Workplace Learning, Dean Campbell, Nadielka Bishop, Sanjiv Sarin
Journal of Research Initiatives
This paper undertakes a cultural interpretation of the roles professional expertise play in the workplace with a community of post-secondary administrators at one institution. To better understand and evaluate Wenger’s (1998) concept of communities of practice, this case study explored boundaries, intersections, and learning communities in communities of practice in graduate enrollment management (GEM). The paper examined communities of practice at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The study defined the following interventions as indicators of a community of practice in graduate enrollment management: a) boundaries of position; (b) constellations of communities; and (c) learning communities. The paper also considered implications …

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive
Diabetes is costly and a leading cause of death and disability in the United States (CDC, 2015). There is no known cure for the disease, however, it can be managed and controlled through self-management. This process involves patients managing a complex set of distinct but related tasks including, but not limited to, monitoring health conditions, tracking medication dosages, food intake, physical activities, complying with treatment regimens, and solving problems that may arise due to illness (Clark et al., 1991; Hill-Briggs, 2003). In recent years, mobile apps and devices (henceforth labeled mobile technologies) have emerged as a promising means to help …

Budgeting As A Method Of Cost Management Using A Residential Community As An Example, Bartłomiej Juras, Małgorzata Czerny
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
This article discusses the role of budgeting as a method of cost management in a housing community in the Greater Poland region, during the period of 2011–2015. General research methods were used, such as analysis of the budgets of the housing community, as well as deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning for conclusions. The analyses contain also cost trends in the examined period, some average costs in the period, cost division into groups, costs per capita, per apartment, etc., but focus mostly on variations between budget plans and their implementation. The analysis of the budgets and their implementation in 2011–2015 shows …

Improving The Nuclear Reform Implementation For Success, Allen Y. Agnes
Theses and Dissertations
This research identifies the method used for successful implementations. This method is critical to the nuclear enterprise as it will continually guide the program. Post-Cold War began an era of decline in the nuclear enterprise. Leaders were risk-averse in fear of being fired for making mistakes, the nuclear culture lost its experts, organizations were drawn to the conventional fight, and training lacked the priority necessary to rebuild the nuclear enterprise. In 2007 and 2008 two major incidents occurred, a necessary to bring focus and priority back to the nuclear enterprise. Several reports were accomplished to identify the issues and recommendations. …

The Influence Of Education And Experience Upon Contextual And Task Performance In Warehouse Operations, Allen R. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Supply chain workers make observable, preventable errors while completing their assigned tasks in the shipping process. Previous research has indicated that individuals with a greater grasp of their work and better system knowledge are less likely to commit interpretation errors. We believe worker-performance may, likewise, be affected by an individuals knowledge of why and where they fit into a larger system defined as mission knowledge. To assess our research objectives, we conduct a controlled experiment with 100 workers in the Air Force supply career field to discern how mission clarity, that is, education, experience and subject characteristics affect pick and …
Air Force Project Risk Management – The Impact Of Inconsistent Processes, Eric J. Perez
Air Force Project Risk Management – The Impact Of Inconsistent Processes, Eric J. Perez
Theses and Dissertations
On the surface, the majority of Air Force units appear to be executing some form of project risk management (PRM). Deeper investigation exposes many of the PRM practices currently in place to often be ad hoc, and as such, have the potential to poorly inform decisions when risk data is escalated to the enterprise levels of the Air Force. Resultantly, there is inconsistency between the PRM processes practiced by Air Force units. This inconsistency is an indication of risk mishandling at the project level and erroneous risk data provided at the enterprise levels of the Air Force. It may be …

Cultural Intelligence And Job Performance In International Transportation Business Settings, Shaun Colin Sexton
Cultural Intelligence And Job Performance In International Transportation Business Settings, Shaun Colin Sexton
Theses and Dissertations
Motivating language (ML) is a technique used by managers to motivate subordinates using a three-part method aimed at reducing uncertainty, creating meaning, and establishing empathy. Preliminary research has shown that ML can help to improve such worker outcome variables as satisfaction, intent to stay, innovativeness, and performance. This study posits that a supervisor’s use of ML will significantly improve a subordinate’s cultural intelligence (CQ), which identifies an individual’s ability to adapt to new cultural situations through another multi-part method involving a person’s cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, and behavioral dynamics. Furthermore, CQ is examined against the same worker outcome variables as ML, …
A Phenomenological Investigation Of Factors Leading To Success In Diverting Non-Urgent Emergency Department Use At A Rural Critical Access Hospital Using The Patient Centered Medical Home Model, Paul Gratton
Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
Emergency Department (ED) overuse for non-urgent medical concerns is a factor contributing to ED overcrowding, which is in turn related to negative health outcomes. Additionally, low-urgency care provided in the ED is more expensive and less comprehensive than in a primary care clinic. To address this issue, a number of programs have been developed in the United States to redirect non-urgent, high-frequency patients from the ED to their primary care clinic. These programs utilize the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model to provide holistic, team-based care in a primary care setting in order to address the educational and behavioral needs of …

University Rankings: Evidence And A Conceptual Framework, Jonathan G.S. Koppell, Jacob Fowles, H. George Frederickson
Publications from President Jonathan G.S. Koppell
University ranking has high public visibility, the ranking business has flourished, and institutions of higher education have not been able to ignore it. This study of university ranking presents general considerations of ranking and institutional responses to it, particularly considering reactions to ranking, ranking as a self-fulfilling prophecy, and ranking as a means of transforming qualities into quantities. The authors present a conceptual framework of university ranking based on three propositions and carry out a descriptive statistical analysis of U.S. and international ranking data to evaluate those propositions. The first proposition of university ranking is that ranking systems are demarcated …

(Re)Structuring The Agency: Agency Working Arrangements And Social Care In The Era Of Austerity And Beyond., Jim M. Cantwell, Martin P. Power Dr
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
In Ireland, the austerity era of recent years brought (un)employment to the fore in a manner not seen since the 1980s. Within the arena of health and social care, this was epitomised by the ‘embargo’. Confined within an embargo process, recruitment agencies became a first choice response to maintaining service delivery in a deepening recessionary period. Located against this backdrop, this study explored agency-working arrangements in social care through the use of semi-structured interviews with service provider managers (n=3) and agency social care workers (n=6). Analysed using a variation of conventional content analysis; these interviews reveal a central tension between …

Web 2.0 integration requires a high level of learner-centered skills to create a personal learning environment (PLE). The pedagogical capability of Web 2.0 could support and promote self-regulated learning (SRL) by enabling the constructions of PLEs. This study investigated how will each of the six aspects of self-regulated online learning (i.e., environment structuring, goal setting, time management, task strategies, help seeking, & self-evaluation) respectively predict the level of initiative, the sense of control, and the level of self-reflection in personal learning environment (PLE) management. The study concluded that all six aspects of SRL could predict three types of PLE management …

Community Colleges And Educating For Democracy, Carrie B. Kisker, John J. Theis, Alberto R. Olivas
Community Colleges And Educating For Democracy, Carrie B. Kisker, John J. Theis, Alberto R. Olivas
eJournal of Public Affairs
The community college is widely viewed as an institution of democracy. Policymakers value it as a low-cost way to educate and train the nation’s least prepared and less well-off, and students view it as a good way—for many, the only way—to educate themselves and transcend the social class into which they were born. Yet, acting as an institution or an agent of democracy is not the same as educating for democracy, which means engaging students in both an understanding of civic institutions and the practical experience of acting in a public arena. Educating for democracy is an active notion; it …

Ambivalence In Organizations: A Multilevel Approach, Blake E. Ashforth, Kristie M. Rogers, Michael G. Pratt, Camille Pradies
Management Faculty Research and Publications
The experience of simultaneously positive and negative orientations toward a person, goal, task, idea, and such appears to be quite common in organizations, but it is poorly understood. We develop a multilevel perspective on ambivalence in organizations that demonstrates how this phenomenon is integral to certain cognitive and emotional processes and important outcomes. Specifically, we discuss the organizational triggers of ambivalence and the cognitive and emotional mechanisms through which ambivalence diffuses between the individual and collective levels of analysis. We offer an integrative framework of major responses to highly intense ambivalence (avoidance, domination, compromise, and holism) that is applicable to …

Environmental Ingredients For Disaster: Developing And Validating The Alvarado Work Environment Scale Of Toxicity, Claudia Alvarado
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Leadership has been a much studied area within industrial and organizational psychology. Recently, scholars have begun to focus on the negative side of leadership; however, a lack of research has limited our understanding of toxic leadership. One step forward in this domain has been the development of the toxic triangle, which posits that toxic leaders are aided by toxic followers with a toxic environment. Although the leader has been studied within this triangle, relatively little has been researched regarding the follower or the environment. Specifically, that there has been a lack of research in the organizational environment that allows the …

This descriptive qualitative study explored data from debriefs of all newly hired nurses at 3, 6, and 12 months posthire during a newly designed transition-to-practice program at a pediatric hospital. Four major themes emerged: preceptors, education process, adaptation to the organization, and role transition. Supportive factors included staged orientation, limited preceptors, mentors, regular communication with leaders, and a culture of teamwork. Stressors included too many preceptors, mentorship needs, floating, communication challenges, and organizational changes.
