What Can Be Learned From Small (And Micro) States? ‘Educational Geostrategic Leveraging’ And The Mechanisms Of The Fourth Industrial Revolution – The Internet Of Things And Disruptive Innovation, Tavis D. Jules, Patrick Ressler

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper explores how certain global mechanisms of the so-called fourth industrial revolution – the internet of things and disruptive innovation – impact the educational governance activities, social forms of coordination, and scales in small (and micro) states. We advance that there are certain ‘behavioral characteristics’ that small (and micro) states possess that can teach us about dealing with some of the current global challenges. We suggest to move away from seeing small (and micro) states as being exclusively vulnerable and, rather, to re-conceptualize smallness as a potential strength. In line with this argument, we argue that the geometries of …

A New Domain For Place-Rooted Foundations: Economic Development Philanthropy, Deborah Markley, Janet Topolsky, Don Macke, Travis Green, Kristin Feierabend Sep 2016

A New Domain For Place-Rooted Foundations: Economic Development Philanthropy, Deborah Markley, Janet Topolsky, Don Macke, Travis Green, Kristin Feierabend

The Foundation Review

This article suggests that economic development philanthropy is a new domain for place-rooted foundations, and highlights the important system-actor role that these foundations can and are playing to advance economic development that produces better outcomes for families and communities.

Economic development philanthropy requires foundations to play integrating or missing roles to advance regional economic development – that they act to fill gaps that other organizations and agencies in the community or region are not addressing. To ensure that a foundation is playing this value-added role requires identifying what others are doing and the outcomes they are seeking or achieving – …

Re-Thinking Executive Control Of And Accountability For The Agency, Benedict Sheehy, Don Feaver Sep 2016

Re-Thinking Executive Control Of And Accountability For The Agency, Benedict Sheehy, Don Feaver

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The organization of many Western governments has undergone dramatic structural and procedural changes over the past century. A large portion of public administration previously done by departments within a more centralized structure of government has been shifted to administrative units, often referred to as “agencies” that fall outside the constitutional core—an “agencified” model. This article investigates the historical contexts and legal developments associated with these changes and illuminates how “agencification” has altered the balance between executive control powers and executive accountability obligations. It examines how the organizational changes have been addressed in both the responsible government models of the United …

Myopic Reactions To Performance Feedback: Different Decision Makers, Different Decisions, Henrich R. Greve, Cyndi Man Zhang Sep 2016

Myopic Reactions To Performance Feedback: Different Decision Makers, Different Decisions, Henrich R. Greve, Cyndi Man Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The behavioral theory of the firm predicts that problemistic search and organizational change occurs after comparing performance with the aspiration level, and this prediction has been strongly supported. The bounded rationality assumption in the behavioral theory of the firm suggests that such search is often myopic. However, we still lack theory explaining the source of myopia and how myopia influences decision makers choosing search directions when performance feedback indicates a problem. In this study, we address the relationship between myopia and search direction. We develop theory on how decision maker cognitions and knowledge formed by their past experiences underlie coalitions …

In practical terms, an age-friendly city adapts its structures and services to be accessible to and inclusive of older people with varying needs and capacities.” Bowling Green was the seventh city in the US to join the World Health Organization’s Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and is currently in year three of a five-year project. The developments over the past two years have been guided by the principle that senior residents of Bowling …

A Follower - Centric Model: Predictors Of Job Satisfaction And Perception Of Leader Effectiveness In Lebanese Registered Nurses, Rana S. Abdel Malak

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Leaders and their followers share the work environment; they live the same challenges, and face the same problems (Baker, 2007; Uhl-Bien et al., 2014). However, in nursing little is known about the effect of the quality of the manager – follower relationship and work engagement in formulating a follower’s perception of leadership and its impact on job satisfaction. In a country such as Lebanon that has the eighth lowest nurse density in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) and suffers from excessive nurse migration and low nurse satisfaction and retention rates (El-Jardali, Dimassi, Dumit, Jamal, & Mouro, 2009) understanding the factors …

Three Essays On Institutions And Organizations, Matthew J. Histen Jr Aug 2016

Three Essays On Institutions And Organizations, Matthew J. Histen Jr

Doctoral Dissertations

Organizational economics asks the question why are some transactions located in one firm, while in other cases they are located across firms. The classic answer is that market and firms are substitutes, and the boundary between these organizing features depends on transaction costs. The costs of accessing and using the price mechanism can lead to cheaper economic organization with internal governance. But avenues remain to explore through extensions to the theory, novel applications, and empirical work. While transaction cost economics challenged the Marshallian firm as a black box, the market continued to remain a black box itself. Thus chapter one …

Getting Back To The "Grassroots" Of Tax Administration: Because "We The People" Long For A Gathering Of American Eagles To Restore Trust In The Internal Revenue Service With A Rebuild Irs Initiative, Frank Wolpe Aug 2016

Getting Back To The "Grassroots" Of Tax Administration: Because "We The People" Long For A Gathering Of American Eagles To Restore Trust In The Internal Revenue Service With A Rebuild Irs Initiative, Frank Wolpe

Akron Law Review

Like America, our Internal Revenue Service is a work in progress. Yet, for best results, it’s better to avoid thinking too much about what it is or is not! Instead, let’s think more about what the IRS ought to be! This Article thusly offers a realistic path forward with new choices for a local presence, which once again makes it taxpayer/customer-centric. For more effective tax administration, it also offers a return to something that inexcusably went missing in 1998: senior-executive “on-site oversight” of field operations.

If today’s Internal Revenue Service can be fairly described as an exploding volcano …

Examining Diversity And Inclusion In The Federal Workforce And The Impact Of Inclusion On Employee Engagement, Ashley N. Settles Aug 2016

Examining Diversity And Inclusion In The Federal Workforce And The Impact Of Inclusion On Employee Engagement, Ashley N. Settles

Theses and Dissertations

As a result of globalization, developing markets, and demographic changes in the U.S. labor force, the United States has become increasingly diverse. Therefore, diversity and inclusion is a vital part of our society. Diversity is often viewed as a double-edge sword. Proponents argue that the benefits of diversity include greater creativity, innovation, and improved organizational performance. Opponents argue that organizational diversity is costly, increases conflict, and is overall unfair. No matter what side of the diversity argument that you find yourself, there is a general sentiment that diversity alone, is not enough. The goal is to make workplaces inclusive. In …

Hybrid Agile Approach: Efficiently Blending Traditional And Agile Methodologies, Rashmi Wankhede Aug 2016

Hybrid Agile Approach: Efficiently Blending Traditional And Agile Methodologies, Rashmi Wankhede

Dissertations and Theses

Agile development, in its simplest form, offers a lightweight framework for helping teams, given a constantly evolving functional and technical landscape, maintain a focus on the rapid delivery of business value. Traditional project management focuses more on distinct and predefined sequential phases. It assumes that once requirements are fixed there won’t be any changes or additions in future. In today’s world however this is not true and development teams have to incorporate changes at later stages to be competitive. This is where agile methodologies have an edge over traditional methods. Agile can handle more complex and highly adaptable projects. However, …

Performance Management In Family Microbusinesses, Alice M. Brawley Aug 2016

Performance Management In Family Microbusinesses, Alice M. Brawley

All Dissertations

The purpose of the these studies was to develop and validate a grounded theory of performance management in United States family microbusinesses, or businesses with fewer than 10 employees, at least one of whom is a family member. U.S. microbusinesses comprise 75% of private sector businesses and account for 12 million employees (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). Despite their majority presence, industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology research has often focused on larger businesses (Levy, 2006; May, 1997; Tetrick, Slack, Da Silva, & Sinclair, 2000), potentially limiting our knowledge and relevance to considerable numbers of businesses and employees. In Study 1, I conducted semi-structured …

Improving The Eco-System Of Passwords, Weining Yang Aug 2016

Improving The Eco-System Of Passwords, Weining Yang

Open Access Dissertations

Password-based authentication is perhaps the most widely used method for user authentication. Passwords are both easy to understand and use, and easy to implement. With these advantages, password-based authentication is likely to stay as an important part of security in the foreseeable future. One major weakness of password-based authentication is that many users tend to choose weak passwords that are easy to guess. In this dissertation, we address the challenge and improve the eco-system of passwords in multiple aspects. Firstly, we provide methodologies that help password research. To be more specific, we propose Probability Threshold Graphs, which is superior to …

Clinical support staff received training on how to perform spirometry and providers received education on the interpretation and utility of spirometry results to drive care to improve outcomes for clients with asthma. Project outcomes examined the self-rated confidence to perform and interpret spirometry before and after the intervention and the subsequent utilization pattern of office-based spirometry at the primary care clinic. For clinical support staff, the self-comfort level at performing …

Implementation Of State Developmental Education Policy: A Multiple Case Study Of Community College Faculty Perceptions Of Involvement, Shirley Davenport Aug 2016

Implementation Of State Developmental Education Policy: A Multiple Case Study Of Community College Faculty Perceptions Of Involvement, Shirley Davenport

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Numerous studies have indicated that developmental education as it is currently offered in many colleges and universities produces dismal results, with student success rates averaging as low as 25%. To address this issue, legislators in some states have begun to intervene, adopting policies that vary from suggestions for improvements to mandated pedagogical approaches. However, given the higher education organizational environment, the manner in which any change is implemented can be key to its success.

The purpose of this comparative multiple case study was to describe and interpret the perceptions of developmental education faculty regarding their level of involvement in developmental …

Leading Growth: A Grounded Theory Study Of Superintendent Strategies To Support Student Growth, Terry L. Ward

Education Doctoral

Strong leadership in any organization is critical to success. Research suggests school superintendent leadership can have positive outcomes on student learning. Until recently, the impact of school superintendents have been thought to be too indirect or complex to study. This study explores school superintendent leaders who create school-wide systems that promote student growth. This research examines the characteristics, behaviors, and actions of superintendents that lead to student growth. Using a grounded theory methodology, the author examined new and emerging ideas to promote student growth. This study utilized four steps in data collection and analysis: (a) initial coding, (b) category development, …

Modern Megachurch Organization In The United States (2005-2013) : An Exploratory Organizational Study Of The American Megachurch Phenomenon., Robert Lee Shelby Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation study explores the applicability of two for-profit organizational theories on a non-profit sector. Theoretical concepts from organizational ecology (OE) and new institutional sociology (NIS) provide the framework for exploring modern megachurches as an organizational phenomenon in the United States between 2005 and 2013. Modern megachurches are modern in the sense they really began to be an organizational population starting in the 1970s and 1980s. These churches are distinctively from the Protestant Christian tradition having 2,000 or more attendees (Thumma & Travis, 2007; Hartford Institute for Religion Research, n.d.). Three empirical chapters test several hypotheses germane to these aforementioned …

Principal Self-Efficacy In The Implementation Of A Standards Based Teacher Evaluation Reform., Jason Kennedy Neuss Aug 2016

Principal Self-Efficacy In The Implementation Of A Standards Based Teacher Evaluation Reform., Jason Kennedy Neuss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

States across the country are adopting new methods of determining teacher effectiveness. A method that has increased in popularity is the use of standards based teacher evaluation (SBTE). These systems are typically created by state legislation and approved for the scope of work associated with a state’s Race to the Top (RTTT) application and federally approved Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) waiver application. The evaluation of teachers now relies on two key components—an administrator’s rating of teacher performance and a rating of student academic growth. The enactment and implementation of teacher evaluation laws have changed the way administrators evaluate …

Cross-Functional Teams In Defense Reform: Help Or Hindrance?, Christopher J. Lamb

Strategic Forums

On May 12, 2016, the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) announced its markup of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2017. Committee chairman John McCain (RAZ) stated that the bill “contains the most sweeping reforms of the organization of the Department of Defense [DOD] in a generation.” The House Armed Services Committee version of the NDAA contained fewer reforms, but the committee emphasized that reform was necessary because “security challenges have become more transregional, multi-domain, and multi-functional. . . . U.S. superiority in key warfighting areas is at risk with other nations’ technological advances; and . . …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this phenomenological research study was to describe the cultural influences of resource dependence for community college administrators responsible for the implementation of initiatives related to Tennessee’s new performance funding program. Tennessee’s funding formula, considered one of the most aggressive and robust in the country, is among a second generation of performance funding programs commonly referred to as performance funding 2.0. Cultural influences of resource dependence were defined as values, beliefs, and customs that influence administrator efforts to improve institutional outcomes and acquire additional resources through performance funding.

A top performing community college in terms of the performance …

A Functional Analysis Of Leader Behavior In A Behavioral Health Setting, Jason White Aug 2016

A Functional Analysis Of Leader Behavior In A Behavioral Health Setting, Jason White

All Theses And Dissertations

A requirement for Maine behavioral health organizations to provide all employees with evaluations lacks guidelines on how to evaluate leader behavior; best practices are to provide a multifaceted evaluation process that includes direct observation. A single-case research design and continuous partial interval recording procedures were conducted on a male behavioral health clinician leading clinical supervision in which the dependent variable was the clinician’s delivery of positive reinforcement and the independent variable was the provider’s increased discussion of case shares. The basic findings showed that leader behavior changed as follower behavior changed to manage the group and meet group goals. The …
