The Effects Of Selected Bio-Active Feed Additives On Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Production And Health, Ayodeji Adeoye
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Three investigations were conducted to assess the effects of selected bio-active feed additives on tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) growth performance, feed utilisation, haemato-immunological status, intestinal morphology and microbiology. The first experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding tilapia semi-practical diets supplemented with exogenous enzymes (phytase, protease or carbohydrase). After six weeks of the dietary supplementation, tilapia fed diets supplemented with exogenous enzymes (phytase and carbohydrase) showed enhanced growth performance and higher microvilli density when compared to the control group. Additionally, the intestinal bacterial community profile of tilapia fed the carbohydrase supplemented diet was significantly altered in contrast to those …

Are Biometrics Useful In Discriminating Between Closely-Related Rubus L. Taxa?, Keith Jr Spurgin
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Members of the genus Rubus L., including the Brambles and Raspberries, are known as aggressive weeds and also as plants with beneficial traits. Several wild Bramble species have been improved or crossed to produce marketable varieties and some species are considered to be particularly valuable for their nutritional and medicinal properties. However, for the great majority of botanists they remain a taxonomic enigma. Traditionally batologists (Bramble specialists) have separated taxa mainly by morphological descriptions. Breeders and growers of economically important Rubus species use traditional written descriptions including biometric data, to supplement DNA analysis, drawings and photographs. The following study attempts …

Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em: Intellectual Property Rights In The Tobacco Industry Going Up In Smoke, Kristen Lease
Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em: Intellectual Property Rights In The Tobacco Industry Going Up In Smoke, Kristen Lease
Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
The Tobacco Plain Packaging Act (TPPA) was passed in Australia in 2011 and set restrictions on the appearance of tobacco packages. The restrictions limited the use of trademarks to only the brand name, and banned any use of distinctive colors or images. Tobacco growing nations believed this restriction on trade dress violated Article 20 of the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement, which guarantees that no restriction may unjustifiably encumber intellectual property. Article 8 of the TRIPS Agreement, however, allows for encumbrances when it is intended to promote the protection of public health and safety. The tobacco growing …

The Utility Of The Participatory Approach For Sustainable Development Assessments, Ashma Vaidya
The Utility Of The Participatory Approach For Sustainable Development Assessments, Ashma Vaidya
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
‘Sustainability’ may be a generalizable concept; its definition however, heavily depends upon context. Understanding the context (sociocultural, environmental, socioeconomic, political etc.) is crucial for defining and assessing the sustainability of any given socio-ecological system. This point underlies our research design and objectives. The primary objectives of this research were to understand the sustainability context in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and to use it to develop a sustainability assessment framework for a potential forest-based bioenergy industry in the region. We first reviewed top-down and bottom-up sustainability assessment frameworks. Then we used the best-suited approach i.e. bottom-up participatory approach, to pursue …

The Role Of Amino Acids In The Nitrogen Cycle Of Peatlands, Tia Scarpelli
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Future release of carbon from peatlands in response to climate change may be impacted by nitrogen limitation. The current study considers the role of amino acids as a nitrogen source in peatlands. The total free amino acid (TFAA) concentration for peats ranged from 0-2.3 µM, and leucine was the primary contributor. The dominance of sedge or ericaceous shrub plant types did not significantly impact the TFAA pool. Ammonium concentrations were much greater than TFAA and nitrate concentrations. TFAA concentrations were greatest in spring and least in fall. The springtime maxima and summer decrease in concentrations were simulated in a modeling …

The effects of two different types of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the physicochemical properties, biochemical composition, and storage quality of sweet pomegranate variety Beynarı were investigated during long-term storage. Pomegranates were harvested at the commercial harvest stage and packed in two different commercial types of MAP (MAP1, sealed in packages made of Xtend® film; MAP2, sealed in bags made of ZOEPAC). Unpacked fruits stored in plastic boxes were used as the control. Following packaging treatments, all packed and unpacked fruit samples were stored at 6 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5% relative humidity for 120 days, and they …

This investigation was aimed to evaluate 22 promising vegetable amaranth genotypes for antioxidant, leaf quality, and agronomic traits for two test seasons. The experiment was conducted to study the degree of genetic parameters, associations among different traits, and their contribution towards foliage yield. The analysis of variance for twelve traits was found highly significant. High mean, high range of variability, and high genotypic variance were observed for all the traits except content of Ca, protein, and carotenoid. Close differences between genotypic and phenotypic variances and genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation were observed for all the traits. High to moderate …
