Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Background: Non-alcoholic and alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD and AFLD, respectively) are major health problems, as patients with either condition can progress to hepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Although histologically similar, key differences likely exist in these two models. For example, altered content of several vesicle trafficking proteins have been identified in AFLD, but their content in NAFLD is unknown. In this study, we compared select parameters in NAFLD and AFLD in a rat model.

Methods: We fed either Lieber- DeCarli liquid control or alcohol-containing (35 % as calories) diet (AFLD model) or lean or high-fat (12 or 60 % derived …

Cortical And Psychological Mechanisms Of Visceral Pain, Kelly L. Polnaszek Jan 2016

Cortical And Psychological Mechanisms Of Visceral Pain, Kelly L. Polnaszek

Master's Theses

Objective: Dysmenorrhea is an incapacitating type of visceral pain that affects numerous menstruating women and is defined by painful menstrual cramps and often occurs in the absence of pelvic pathology. Women with dysmenorrhea have reported higher sensitivity to experimental pain, and vulnerability to pain sensitivity may be a primary risk factor for developing chronic pelvic pain for women with dysmenorrhea. Cross-organ sensitization (COS), or the theory that uterine inflammation during menstruation can contribute to chronic pelvic pain by generating neurogenic inflammation in other organs, may be a primary mechanism associated with pelvic pain in women with dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea sufferers with …

Pomegranate Juice Can Do That? Navigating The Jurisdictional Landscape Of Food Health Claim Regulation In A Post-Pom Wonderful World, Hilary G. Buttrick, Courtney Droms Hatch Jan 2016

Pomegranate Juice Can Do That? Navigating The Jurisdictional Landscape Of Food Health Claim Regulation In A Post-Pom Wonderful World, Hilary G. Buttrick, Courtney Droms Hatch

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Thirty years ago, the most the consumer expected out of his or her morning glass of juice was a little extra vitamin C. By 2010, the consumer expected a lot more. POM Wonderful’s pomegranate juice, for instance, promised to improve cardiovascular health, treat erectile dysfunction, and combat prostate cancer.1 Those claims made orange juice look a little pathetic. Of course, those wild promises also landed POM Wonderful in hot water with the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) for misleading the public with scientifically unsubstantiated health claims.2

Matthew Arnold's Diet, Kate Thomas Jan 2016

Matthew Arnold's Diet, Kate Thomas

Literatures in English Faculty Research and Scholarship

The objective of this article is to connect Matthew Arnold, that statesman of culture, with a tin of Tate and Lyle’s Golden Syrup, a by-product of industrial sugar refining that has been named Britain’s “oldest brand.” Bringing the lofty to the low, the sage to the sweetener, is an exercise in willful materialism. Reading Arnold’s “sweetness and light” literally, as comestibles, and “culture” as a term that engages the culinary, puts Arnold into conversation with revolutionary nineteenth-century materialist theorists, in particular the German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach. Although not commonly read now, Feuerbach’s work was translated by George Eliot and influential …

Can Sport Be ‘Un-Political’?, Ansgar Thiel, Anna Vilanova, Martin Toms, Lone Friis Thing, Paddy Dolan

Articles

Sports officials often claim that sport has to be ‘un-political’. This argument is most notably made in two contexts: Firstly, when the decision of awarding Olympic Games or World Championships to nations that struggle with human right issues is justified by the IOC or other international sporting federations. Secondly, when athletes express their concern over social injustices with symbolic gestures of protest in sports-specific contexts.

Year-Round Management Of High Tunnel Production Systems: Spinach And Tomato, Connor Eaton Jan 2016

Year-Round Management Of High Tunnel Production Systems: Spinach And Tomato, Connor Eaton

Master's Theses and Capstones

As high tunnel production is relatively new to the Northeast, this research has helped understand knowledge-gaps in common warm and cold-season crop systems in the region. High tunnels increase crop yield and quality and extend the growing season, and are most commonly used for tomato in the warm-season and spinach in the cold-season.

Spinach was grown in unheated high tunnels throughout the cold-season to evaluate the effects of cultivar and planting date on yield and sweetness (Brix° levels). Cultivar and planting date had a significant effect on yield, where earlier planting dates resulted in higher yields. Cultivar had a significant …

Lipoate Metabolism In Staphylococcus Aureus Pathogenesis, Maria Azul Zorzoli Jan 2016

Lipoate Metabolism In Staphylococcus Aureus Pathogenesis, Maria Azul Zorzoli

Master's Theses

Lipoate is an essential cofactor of several proteins involved in cellular energy homeostasis and catabolism. Lipoate metabolism has been linked to pathogenesis in some microbial species, but its role in Staphylococcus aureus infections had not been explored. In this thesis, we tested the hypothesis that lipoate acquisition mechanisms promote S. aureus infectivity. We used a bacterial genetics approach to elucidate the biological function of the S. aureus genes involved in lipoate metabolism. Our findings allowed us to propose a model for lipoic acid de novo biosynthesis and salvage pathways in S. aureus. Moreover, we detail hitherto undescribed genetic arrangements of …

The New American Debtors' Prisons, Christopher D. Hampson Jan 2016

The New American Debtors' Prisons, Christopher D. Hampson

UF Law Faculty Publications

State by state, Americans abolished imprisonment for debt in the first half of the nineteenth century. In forty-one states, the abolition of debtors' prisons eventually took the form of constitutional bans. But debtors' prisons are back, in the form of imprisonment for nonpayment of criminal fines, fees, and costs. While the new debtors' prisons are not historically or doctrinally continuous with the old, some aspects of them offend the same pragmatic and moral principles that compelled the abolition of the old debtors' prisons. Indeed, the same constitutional texts that abolished the old debtors' prisons constitute checks on the new today. …

Changes In Clavicle Length And Maturation In Americans: 1840–1980, Natalie R. Langley, Sandra Cridlin

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Secular changes refer to short-term biological changes ostensibly due to environmental factors. Two well-documented secular trends in many populations are earlier age of menarche and increasing stature. This study synthesizes data on maximum clavicle length and fusion of the medial epiphysis in 1840–1980 American birth cohorts to provide a comprehensive assessment of developmental and morphological change in the clavicle.

Clavicles from the Hamann-Todd Human Osteological Collection (n = 354), McKern and Stewart Korean War males (n = 341), Forensic Anthropology Data Bank (n = 1,239), and the McCormick Clavicle Collection (n = 1,137) were used in the analysis. Transition analysis …

Seasonal Changes In Soil Physical Properties Under Long-Term No-Tillage, Wagner Henrique Moreira, Cássio A. Tormena, Douglas Karlen, Álvaro Pires Da Silva, Thomas Keller, Edner Betioli Jr.

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

There is no consensus regarding seasonal changes in soil physical properties within and between rows in long-term no-till (NT) crop production systems. We hypothesized that soil physical properties in a Rhodic Ferralsol under long-term NT differed within and between rows and that these changes are influenced by wetting and drying cycles (WDC). Undisturbed samples were taken within and between crop rows from layers of 0 to 0.10 and 0.10 to 0.20 m depth in September 2010, 2011 and 2012 and March 2012 and 2013. At the first sampling, 40 soil samples were collected within the maize (Zea mays L.) …

SMU Law Review

Marks are traditionally said to serve three functions that are separate from the goals of other forms of IP: source identification, advertising, and guarantee of quality. The story, however, that patents and copyrights incentivize creation and that trademarks do not fulfill that purpose does not withstand scrutiny. This Article argues that brands have evolved in such a way that they serve important incentivizing purposes of their own, and that trademark law influences their ability to do so. This Article identifies three generally neglected functions of trademarks. The first pertains to the creation of original, unique marks and brands in and …

Diallyl Trisulfide Modulates Notch Pathway Components In Breast Cancer Cells, Violet Kiesel Jan 2016

Diallyl Trisulfide Modulates Notch Pathway Components In Breast Cancer Cells, Violet Kiesel

Open Access Theses

Breast cancer affects one in eight women throughout the course of their lifetimes creating an immediate demand for novel prevention strategies against this disease. The Notch signaling pathway is often aberrantly activated in human malignancies including breast cancer. Alpha secretases, including A Disintegrin and Metalloprotease (ADAM)-10 and -17, are proteases that play a key role in the cleavage of cell surface molecules and subsequent ligand-mediated activation of Notch signaling pathway. High expression levels of ADAM10 are clinically associated with lower disease-free survival in breast cancer patients. The goal of this study was to determine the effect of diallyl trisulfide (DATS), …

Establishing And Improving Control Strategies That Sustain Plant Health In A Botanical Bio-Filter, Bhargav Ronjoy Rajkhowa

Open Access Theses

This research is a study of the effectiveness of the mechanical, hydroponic and software components of a biowall that improves indoor air quality through plant assisted phytoremediation. The research investigates the ability of the device to sustain plant health in a controlled environment over an extended period. This is because, the biowall has intermittent airflow through it. This airflow, has a detrimental effect on the health of the plants in the biowall. After studying the horticultural and mechanical aspects needed to operate a biowall, appropriate control algorithms were developed. These algorithms controlled the biowall’s lights, irrigation, and fan.

• One of the current problems in many affluent societies is the straightforward access to convenience and fast foods. Although these selections have suitability for today’s fast-paced world, overall nutritional value becomes the martyr of such practices. It is a logical thought that there could be a correlation between this nutritional pattern and the ever-increasing presence of obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cancer, and other conditions carrying a proverbial death sentence.

• The intent of this review of the literature was to determine the effect a plant-based diet versus an omnivorous diet would have on adults, …
