To Jump Or Not To Jump: Mule Deer (Odocoileus Hemionus) And White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Crossing Decisions, Emily N. Burkholder
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
There have been recent efforts to enhance ungulate movement through modified fencing structures. Ungulates such as mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) typically negotiate fences by either jumping over fencing or going under. Here we examine crossing success and crossing decisions of mule deer and white-tailed deer and determine factors that influence crossing success and the impending decision to jump over or crawl underneath fencing. Using a BACI (Before-After-Control-Impact) design, we deployed remote cameras along fence lines in three study areas; Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Suffield and OneFour research center in Southeastern Alberta, …

Assessing Risk And Resilience Factors For Early Childhood Development, Danielle Rioux
Honors Program Theses
Adequate early child developmental screenings are often not available in many child care centers despite considerable research that points toward the importance and necessity of such screenings in assuring quality educational and social outcomes for children. A wealth of influences can affect how a child develops, with both negative risk and positive resilience factors playing a key role in determining outcomes. The present study was conducted through chart review of 55 children attending Winter Park Day Nursery (WPDN). We explored the relationships between risk factors, resilience, and outcomes by using measures currently collected by the center, and combining them in …

The Role Of Ethylene In Systemic Acquired Resistance In Moss, Keiffer Williams
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The moss species Physcomitrella patens and Amblystegium serpens were used to categorize the effects of the phytohormone ethylene in the plant-pathogen response mechanism systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in non-vascular plants. The results outlined in this thesis found that individual exposure to the ethylene precursor molecules ACC and ethephon both up-regulated ethylene responsive genes in P. patens, demonstrating a positive response to ethylene exposure in the moss. Exposure to ACC and ethephon in A. serpens followed by inoculation with the fungal pathogen Pythium irregulare demonstrated an ambiguous resistance response induced by ethylene exposure in the moss. The growth rate of P. …

The bulk density of grain in a storage structure varies vertically and horizontally due to the overburden pressure created by the cumulative weight of the overlying material. As the overburden pressure increases, the stored material compacts. This compaction is believed to be caused by rearrangement of kernels along with higher intergranular stress between particles, leading to kernel deformation. This compaction is of primary concern when estimating the amount of grain in a storage structure. In this comprehensive study, confined uniaxial compression tests were conducted on 27 different samples of hard red winter wheat, at three moisture levels, over the range …

Natural Incubators: Somatic Support As Reproductive Technology, And The Comparative Constitutional Implications On Cases Of Maternal Brain Death In The U.S., Canada, And Ireland, Sonya Laddon Rahders
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
Should a brain dead pregnant person be kept alive on life support, despite the family's wishes otherwise, in order to fully gestate the fetus? A 2013 grand rounds study out of United Arab Emirates found that medical technology has reached such an advanced stage that gestational age is no longer a barrier to whether or not a pregnant person may be kept on somatic support until the fetus is delivered. The study concluded that a brain dead pregnant person might serve as a "natural incubator" and successfully deliver a baby after the mother becomes brain dead at just 16 weeks' …
Clearing Some Smoke: Medical Cannabis, Fifteen Years Later, Steven Heilig
Clearing Some Smoke: Medical Cannabis, Fifteen Years Later, Steven Heilig
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
The legalization of medical cannabis in California came with the passage of the California Proposition 215. However, with the passage of Proposition 215, also came some setbacks, one of them being California Proposition 19. Proposition 19 sought to legalize the sale of cannabis throughout the state, but due to the biases and fear related to the marijuana industry, the proposition failed to pass. The author explains the unique position California is in for the cannabis industry across the country and how it can work to help alleviate the fears of such a growing industry.

The Hidden Costs Of Cliff Effects In The Internal Revenue Code And Proposals For Change, Manoj Viswanathan
The Hidden Costs Of Cliff Effects In The Internal Revenue Code And Proposals For Change, Manoj Viswanathan
Faculty Scholarship
Cliff effects in the Internal Revenue Code trigger a sudden increase of federal tax liability when some attribute of a taxpayer—most commonly income—exceeds a particular threshold value. As a result, two taxpayers in nearly identical economic situations can face considerably different tax liabilities depending on which side of the triggering criterion they fall. The magnitude of the equity and efficiency costs associated with cliff effects is significant: cliff effects are attached to tax provisions amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars, the majority of which are targeted at low- and moderate-income taxpayers. Cliff effects have received little attention in legal …

Dieulafoy lesions, vascular anomalies typically found along the gastrointestinal tract, have been viewed as rare and obscure causes of sudden intestinal bleeding, especially in pediatric patients. Since their discovery in the late 19th century, the reported incidence has increased. This is due to an increased awareness of, and knowledge about, their presentation and to advanced endoscopic diagnosis and therapy. Our patient was a three-year-old male, without a complex medical history. He presented to the emergency department with acute hematemesis with blood clots and acute anemia requiring blood transfusion. Endoscopy revealed four isolated Dieulafoy lesions along the lesser curvature of the …

Chronic wounds have become a major clinical and economic burden in our society. New approaches that accelerate wound healing are desperately needed. Angiogenesis and vascularization play a critical role in healing. One of the essential angiogenic factors that promote the formation of vascular beds is vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Moreover, adipose-derived stem cells (ASC), through their regeneration and differentiation properties, may promote healing when transplanted into a wound bed. I have proposed to develop a novel organotypic wound model to facilitate the study of wound healing process. I hypothesize that administration of genetically-modified ASC secreting VEGF via an adeno-associated …

Discovery And Functional Analyses Of Hessian Fly Effector-Encoding Genes, Lucio Navarro Escalante
Open Access Dissertations
The Hessian fly - wheat system is a well-known model of gene-for-gene interac- tion between host plants and parasitic insects. The Hessian fly uses secreted effector proteins to control susceptible host plant physiology, transforming the plant cells in a nutritive tissue to support the developing insect larva. HF-resistant wheat cultivars employ resistance (R) proteins to perceive the insect avirulence effectors (Avr) and display defensive immune responses. This study is focused in the discovery and functional analyses of insect effector-encoding genes. Chapter one of this thesis offers an introduction about the molecular basis of HF-wheat interactions. In Chapter two, I present …

Puerto Rico and Cuba, linked by a common colonial history, culture, and tropical environments, have similar cuisines. The islands’ shared historical trajectories have been increasingly divergent in the last century, especially since the 1959 Cuban Revolution. This paper analyzes the concurrent social changes since the 1950s in these two contexts, through the work of two iconic cookbook writers, Carmen Valldejuli (Puerto Rico) and Nitza Villapol (Cuba). Writing and publishing during the second half of the twentieth century, these women’s books became an important part of the culinary imagination in their respective islands and diaspora communities. This article analyzes how their …
