Strengthening Community-Based Services For Children And Families Affected By Hiv: An Evaluation Of The Zambia Family Program, Project Soar Jan 2016

Strengthening Community-Based Services For Children And Families Affected By Hiv: An Evaluation Of The Zambia Family Program, Project Soar

HIV and AIDS

As the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) pivots its focus to care and treatment, there is strong interest in learning to what extent community-based programs contribute to achieving the public health goals of getting people—including children and adolescents—tested, enrolled in care if infected, and adherent to treatment. This brief describes Project SOAR’s evaluation of the Zambia Family (ZAMFAM) program, which will generate critical evidence to help fill knowledge gaps. The evidence will also guide country and global decisionmakers in strengthening community-based services to better meet the care, support, and treatment needs of vulnerable children and their families.

Sexy Technical Communication, Tamara Powell, Jonathan Arnett, Monique Logan, Cassandra Race, Tiffani Reardon

2016 Faculty Bookshelf

Sexy technical writing…we’ve got to be kidding, right? But no, we aren’t. Good technical writing is powerful and clear and gets the job done. It brings people together and solves problems. Good technical writing purrs and hums like that BMW you plan to be driving someday. What’s not sexy about that? On the other hand, poor technical writing skills may lead to a lifetime of asking people if they want fries with that…or worse, selling vacuum cleaners door to door. There’s no need to ask what’s not sexy about that!

WE – your textbook authors – are a team of dedicated …

Vitamin D Supplementation And Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Pamela Rangen Jan 2016

Vitamin D Supplementation And Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Pamela Rangen

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

• Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are prone to hypovitaminosis D because of their photosensitivity.

• Vitamin D has beneficial effects not only on bone metabolism but also on the function of the immune system.

• Vitamin D levels depend on many variables, including sun exposure, age, ethnicity, body mass index, use of medications and supplements.

• Patients with SLE avoid the sun because of photosensitive rashes and potential for disease flare, so adequate oral supplementation is critical.

• In addition, to the traditional known metabolic activities, vitamin D has been shown to modulate the immune system, and its …

03. Population Demographics Of The Loggerhead Shrike: Insights Into The Species Decline From A Long-Term Study In The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, Amy A. Chabot, Fran Harty, James Herkert, William Glass

North American Prairie Conference Proceedings

We monitored a breeding population of loggerhead shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus) in the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie from 2005 to 2016. Demographic data were compiled annually, including information on population size, age structure, and reproductive success. We banded adult shrikes, with some additional effort focused on nestlings (2005–2007) and independent hatch-year birds (2014–2016). We measured return rate as the number of birds that were previously banded. Site reuse rates were quantified as the use of a breeding territory in multiple years. Site fidelity, the use of a site by the same male or female in consecutive years, and dispersal distance of …

The Return Of Food: Poverty And Urban Food Security In Zimbabwe After The Crisis, Godfrey Tawodzera, Liam Riley, Jonathan Crush Jan 2016

The Return Of Food: Poverty And Urban Food Security In Zimbabwe After The Crisis, Godfrey Tawodzera, Liam Riley, Jonathan Crush

Hungry Cities Partnership

The nadir of Zimbabwe’s political and economic crisis in 2008 coincided with the implementation of a baseline household food security survey in Harare by AFSUN. This survey found that households in lowincome urban areas in Zimbabwe’s capital were far worse off in terms of all the food insecurity and poverty indicators than households in the other 10 Southern African cities surveyed by AFSUN. The central question addressed in this report is whether food security in Zimbabwe’s urban centres has improved. AFSUN conducted a follow-up survey in 2012 that allows for direct longitudinal comparisons of continuity and change. The status of …

Migration And Food Security: Zimbabwean Migrants In Urban South Africa, Godfrey Tawodzera, Jonathan Crush Jan 2016

Migration And Food Security: Zimbabwean Migrants In Urban South Africa, Godfrey Tawodzera, Jonathan Crush

Hungry Cities Partnership

This report examines the food security status of Zimbabwean migrant households in the poorer areas of two major South African cities, Johannesburg and Cape Town. The vast majority were food insecure in terms of the amount of food to which they had access and the quality and diversity of their diet. What seems clear is that Zimbabwean migrants are significantly more food insecure than other low-income households. The primary reason for this appears to lie in pressures that include remittances of cash and goods back to family in Zimbabwe. The small literature on the impact of migrant remittances on food …

Age Of Kindergarten Entry And Rate Of Specific Learning Disabilities, Elizabeth A. Crum Jan 2016

Age Of Kindergarten Entry And Rate Of Specific Learning Disabilities, Elizabeth A. Crum

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Kindergarten age eligibility requirements vary from state to state; however, school districts typically admit children into kindergarten in the fall following a student’s fifth birthday. Research on the outcomes of five-year-old children and children whose entry was delayed until age six is contradictory. The current study was conducted to add to the existing literature to assist families and policy makers with decision making regarding appropriate kindergarten entry age. The sample included 541 second through seventh grade students from a small rural school district. Actual and predicted counts of students who were later found eligible for specific learning disabilities were examined …

Analyzing The Relationship Of Voluntary Student Participation In Optional Exam Review Sessions With Academic Self-Efficacy And Academic Performance, Christine Stamm Griffin, Robert K. Gable

Higher Education

Much research has been conducted on the topic of self-efficacy and its relationship to student performance. In alignment with the theory of self-efficacy and research performed by Bandura (1993), Schunk (1989, 1991), Zimmerman (1985, 1990), Multon, Brown and Lent (1991); and others, the purpose of this action research study was to determine the relationship of student voluntary attendance at a minimum of one of two optional exam review sessions and whether or not it resulted in a feeling of increased confidence about their potential performance on the exam compared to those students who did not attend the review. Additionally, the …

The Impact Of Diabetes Education On Nurses’ Knowledge Of In-Patient Diabetes Management, Arletha Coffey Jan 2016

The Impact Of Diabetes Education On Nurses’ Knowledge Of In-Patient Diabetes Management, Arletha Coffey

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Research strongly supports the use of an educational intervention to improve nurses’ knowledge of management of patients with diabetes (Abduelkarem & Shareif, 2013; Holmes & Dyer, 2012; Modic et al., 2013; Yacoub et al., 2014; Young, 2011). Nursing leadership in a small rural acute care facility voiced concerns related to ineffective communication among bedside nurses and lack of evidence-based knowledge in regard to prompt recognition, treatment and follow-up of episodic hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic reactions. The researcher used a convenience sample of 65 registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) from the critical care, progressive care, obstetrics, and medical-surgical units …

Skeletal Muscle Mass And Composition During Mammalian Hibernation, Clark J. Cotton Jan 2016

Skeletal Muscle Mass And Composition During Mammalian Hibernation, Clark J. Cotton

Biology Faculty Publications

Hibernation is characterized by prolonged periods of inactivity with concomitantly low nutrient intake, conditions that would typically result in muscle atrophy combined with a loss of oxidative fibers. Yet, hibernators consistently emerge from winter with very little atrophy, frequently accompanied by a slight shift in fiber ratios to more oxidative fiber types. Preservation of muscle morphology is combined with down-regulation of glycolytic pathways and increased reliance on lipid metabolism instead. Furthermore, while rates of protein synthesis are reduced during hibernation, balance is maintained by correspondingly low rates of protein degradation. Proposed mechanisms include a number of signaling pathways and transcription …

Impact Of Educational Intervention On Nurses’ Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy, Sarah Washburn Jan 2016

Impact Of Educational Intervention On Nurses’ Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy, Sarah Washburn

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Executive Summary
Nurses “play a vital role in preparing, educating, encouraging, and supporting women to breastfeed and are instrumental in facilitating initiation and continuation of breastfeeding” (AWHONN, 2015, p. 146). However, most nurses are not adequately prepared in their education to assist mothers with breastfeeding (USBC, 2010; USHHS, 2011). For this reason, an evidencebased practice (EBP) project in which an educational intervention (breastfeeding class) was completed. A pre-test/post-test format assessed the effect of a one hour breastfeeding class on nurses’ self-efficacy with breastfeeding. The purpose of the project was to increase breastfeeding self-efficacy and knowledge in nurses at VVMC and …

Nursing Staff Optimizing Elder Care, Kathy Chapman Jan 2016

Nursing Staff Optimizing Elder Care, Kathy Chapman

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Older adults, 65 years and older, make up more than 50% of the acute care patient population at a Southwest Michigan critical access hospital. This DNP capstone project was implemented for nursing staff members in a small rural hospital to assist with improving knowledge and perceptions of caring for older adults. Realized outcomes from this educational initiative were not meant to create new information but instead to focus on clinical issues and apply best practice for the purpose of determining evidence based solutions. The project’s design implemented to assess outcomes was a quantitative, descriptive, quasi-experimental, non-randomized approach. The plan included …

Executive Summary
A Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Education Module to Promote Patient Activation and Efficacy
Problem
It is estimated that over 572,000 people in the United States have MS, with approximately 200 new cases being diagnosed each week (National Multiple Sclerosis Society, n.d.). In order to increase self-care, reduce the level of impairment, and ultimately, cost to the healthcare system, the consistent use of a targeted educational intervention should be implemented. The problem statement describing the capstone project was: Will the implementation of a structured educational program enhance the knowledge of MS patients and their caregivers regarding the disease process of …
