Single-Locus Versus Multilocus Patterns Of Local Adaptation To Climate In Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus, Pinaceae), Om P. Rajora, Andrew J. Eckert, John W. R. Zinck Jan 2016

Single-Locus Versus Multilocus Patterns Of Local Adaptation To Climate In Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus, Pinaceae), Om P. Rajora, Andrew J. Eckert, John W. R. Zinck

Biology Publications

Natural plant populations are often adapted to their local climate and environmental conditions, and populations of forest trees offer some of the best examples of this pattern. However, little empirical work has focused on the relative contribution of single-locus versus multilocus effects to the genetic architecture of local adaptation in plants/forest trees. Here, we employ eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) to test the hypothesis that it is the inter-genic effects that primarily drive climate-induced local adaptation. The genetic structure of 29 range-wide natural populations of eastern white pine was determined in relation to local climatic factors using both …

Genome-Wide Analysis Of Response To Low Sulfur (Lsu) Genes In Grass Species And Expression Profiling Of Model Grass Species Brachypodium Distachyon Under S Deficiency, Hüseyi̇n Tombuloğlu, Abdugaffor Ablazov, Ertuğrul Fi̇li̇z Jan 2016

Genome-Wide Analysis Of Response To Low Sulfur (Lsu) Genes In Grass Species And Expression Profiling Of Model Grass Species Brachypodium Distachyon Under S Deficiency, Hüseyi̇n Tombuloğlu, Abdugaffor Ablazov, Ertuğrul Fi̇li̇z

Turkish Journal of Biology

Sulfur (S) affects the plant life cycle and crop yield and has nutritional importance for human and animal diet. Its deficiency is one of the major problems in agriculture. However, the plant-specific LSU (response to Low Sulfur) gene family has not been extensively analyzed in major plant species such as grasses. In this study, we have performed in silico genome-wide analysis of LSU genes in 6 grass species, including Brachypodium distachyon, Sorghum bicolor, Oryza sativa, Zea mays, Triticum aestivum, and Panicum virgatum. All identified LSU genes contained one exon encoding proteins of acidic character with cytoplasmic localization. In silico analysis …

Research Support Services In Agriculture, Megan Sheffield

Publications

In 2016, Clemson University Libraries (CUL) participated in a study through Ithaka S+R about research support services in the field on agricultural research. Eight researchers in Clemson University’s Department of Agricultural Sciences participated in a semi-structured interview (see Appendix) with the library liaison to the life sciences. Responses were transcribed and coded to identify themes and ways the library can further support agricultural research at CU.

The first major theme identified was that agricultural research overlaps with a stunning variety of subject areas and, as such, the research methods vary extensively. The projects are also widely collaborative with other departments …

Biofilm Growth Kinetics And Nutrient (N/P) Adsorption In An Urban Lake Using Reclaimed Water: A Quantitative Baseline For Ecological Health Assessment, Tianzhi Wang, Zhenci Wu, Yunkai Li, Mingchao Liang, Zhenhua Wang, Paul Hynds

Articles

Reclaimed wastewater reuse represents an effective method for partial resolution of increasing urban water shortages; however, reclaimed water may be characterized by significant contaminant loading, potentially affecting receiving ecosystem (and potentially human) health. The current study examined biofilm growth and nutrient adsorption in Olympic Lake (Beijing), the largest artificial urban lake in the world supplied exclusively by reclaimed wastewater. Findings indicate that solid particulate, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and metal oxide (Al, Fe, Mn) constituent masses adhere to a bacterial growth curve during biofilm formation and growth. Peak values were observed after ≈30 days, arrived at dynamic stability after ≈50days …

A Moral Argument For Veganism, Dan Hooley, Nathan Nobis Jan 2016

A Moral Argument For Veganism, Dan Hooley, Nathan Nobis

Human Health Collection

In this essay, we argue for dietary veganism. Our case has two steps. First, we argue that, in most circumstances, it is morally wrong to raise animals to produce meat, dairy products, most eggs (a possible exception we discuss is eggs from pet chickens) and most other animal food products. Turning animals into food, and using them for their byproducts, causes serious harms to animals that are morally unjustified: that is, the reasons given to justify causing these kinds of harms – goods or alleged goods that result from animal farming and slaughter – are inadequate to justify the bad …

Moving Beyond The "Five Freedoms" By Updating The "Five Provisions" And Introducing Aligned "Animal Welfare Aims", David J. Mellor Jan 2016

Moving Beyond The "Five Freedoms" By Updating The "Five Provisions" And Introducing Aligned "Animal Welfare Aims", David J. Mellor

General - Animal Welfare

The Five Freedoms paradigm has been very influential in shaping animal welfare thinking for the last two decades, it has two key disadvantages. First, the focus on “freedom” from a range of negative experiences and states has been misunderstood in a number of quarters to mean that complete freedom from these experiences and states is possible, when in fact the best that can be achieved is for them to be minimised. Second, the major focus of the Freedoms on negative experiences and states is now seen to be a disadvantage in view of current understanding that animal welfare management should …

Updating Animal Welfare Thinking: Moving Beyond The "Five Freedoms" Towards "A Life Worth Living", David J. Mellor Jan 2016

Updating Animal Welfare Thinking: Moving Beyond The "Five Freedoms" Towards "A Life Worth Living", David J. Mellor

General - Animal Welfare

The Five Freedoms have had major impact on animal welfare thinking internationally. However, despite clear initial statements that the words ‘freedom from’ should indicate ‘as free as possible from’, the Freedoms have come to be represented as absolute or fundamental freedoms, even rights, by some animal advocate and other groups. Moreover, a marked increase in scientific understanding over the last two decades shows that the Freedoms do not capture the more nuanced knowledge of the biological processes that is germane to understanding animal welfare and which is now available to guide its management. For example, the named negative experiences of …

Changes In The Welfare Of An Injured Working Farm Dog Assessed Using The Five Domains Model, Katherine E. Littlewood, David J. Mellor Jan 2016

Changes In The Welfare Of An Injured Working Farm Dog Assessed Using The Five Domains Model, Katherine E. Littlewood, David J. Mellor

General - Animal Welfare

The present structured, systematic and comprehensive welfare evaluation of an injured working farm dog using the Five Domains Model is of interest in its own right. It is also an example for others wanting to apply the Model to welfare evaluations in different species and contexts. Six stages of a fictitious scenario involving the dog are considered: (1) its on-farm circumstances before one hind leg is injured; (2) its entanglement in barbed wire, cutting it free and transporting it to a veterinary clinic; (3) the initial veterinary examination and overnight stay; (4) amputation of the limb and immediate post-operative recovery; …

Dry Period Plane Of Energy: Effects On Glucose Tolerance In Transition Dairy Cows, S. Mann, F. A. Leal Yepes, M. Duplessis, J. J. Wakshlag, T. R. Overton, B. P. Cummings, D. V. Nydam

Physiology Collection

Overfeeding energy in the dry period can affect glucose metabolism and the energy balance of transition dairy cows with potential detrimental effects on the ability to successfully adapt to early lactation. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of different dry cow feeding strategies on glucose tolerance and on resting concentrations of blood glucose, glucagon, insulin, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in the peripartum period. Cows entering second or greater lactation were enrolled at dry-off (57 d before expected parturition) into 1 of 3 treatment groups following a randomized block design: cows …

Physiology Collection

Recent studies demonstrating a higher incidence of metabolic disorders after calving have challenged the management practice of increasing dietary energy density during the last ~3 wk prepartum. Despite our knowledge at the whole-animal level, the tissue-level mechanisms that are altered in response to feeding management prepartum remain unclear. Our hypothesis was that prepartum body condition score (BCS), in combination with feeding management, plays a central role in the peripartum changes associated with energy balance and inflammatory state. Twenty-eight mid-lactation grazing dairy cows of mixed age and breed were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 treatment groups in a 2 × …

Geographic Variability Of Octopus Insularis Diet: From Oceanic Island To Continental Populations, Tatiana S. Leite, Allan T. Batista, Françoise D. Lima, Jaciana C. Barbosa, Jennifer A. Mather

Habitat and Trophic Ecology Collection

A predator’s choice of prey can be affected by many factors. We evaluated various influences on population dietary composition, individual specialization and size of prey in Octopus insularis populations from 2 continental and 4 insular locations. We expected that habitat diversity would lead to diet heterogeneity. Furthermore, in keeping with MacArthur & Wilson’s (1967) theory of island biogeography, we expected that diet diversity would be lower around islands than on the coast of the mainland. Both predictions were confirmed when prey remains from octopus middens were examined. The 2 continental areas exhibited a richer habitat diversity and a wider variety …

Internal Medicine

Increased uric acid levels have been implicated in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome. To examine the mechanisms by which this occurs, we hypothesized that an increase in heme oxygenase 1, a potent antioxidant gene, will decrease uric acid levels and adipocyte dysfunction via suppression of ROS and xanthine oxidase (XO) levels. We examined the effect of uric acid on adipogenesis in human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the presence and absence of cobalt protoporphyrin (CoPP), an HO-1 inducer, and tin mesoporphyrin (SnMP), an HO activity inhibitor. Uric acid increased adipogenesis by increasing NADPH oxidase expression and elevation in the adipogenesis markers …

Using Gatorade® To Control Serum Sodium Levels Of Patients With Hyponatremia, Hannah Elizabeth Degen Jan 2016

Using Gatorade® To Control Serum Sodium Levels Of Patients With Hyponatremia, Hannah Elizabeth Degen

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Background: Hyponatremia is a condition in which serum sodium levels are less than 135 mmol/L. It is the most prevalent sodium disorder in hospitalized patients. Currently, the most commonly used treatment for the condition include fluid restriction, carefully monitored hypertonic IV solution and diuretic therapy. In athletes with hyponatremia, low serum sodium levels have been corrected with the administration of an isotonic beverage. Therefore, giving Gatorade® to patients with hyponatremia may be an alternative treatment method to increase serum sodium levels. Objective: The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of oral Gatorade® protocol on serum sodium levels …

The Effects Of The Menstrual Cycle On Agility, Kheniser G. Karim Jan 2016

The Effects Of The Menstrual Cycle On Agility, Kheniser G. Karim

ETD Archive

It has long been speculated that the menstrual cycle affects athletic performance. Whether athletic performance is impacted by menstrual cycle phase is dependent upon an array of factors: the type of activity (i.e., aerobic or anaerobic); oral contraceptive (OC) use; and, possibly, if mental processing is required during the execution of the task. Prior research has indicated that alterations in estradiol (E2) affects cognitive performance. However, there is a paucity of information about whether E2 modulates the speed of cognitive processing in a sports setting, which may cause alterations in sport performance throughout the menstrual cycle. Additionally, variations in E2 …
