Effect Of Direct-Fed Microbial Dosage On The Fecal Concentrations Of Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia Coli In Feedlot Cattle, Brandon E. Luedtke, Joseph M. Bosilevac, Dayna M. Harhay, Terrance M. Arthur Jan 2016

Effect Of Direct-Fed Microbial Dosage On The Fecal Concentrations Of Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia Coli In Feedlot Cattle, Brandon E. Luedtke, Joseph M. Bosilevac, Dayna M. Harhay, Terrance M. Arthur

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Contamination of beef products by Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli is a concern for food safety with a particular subset, the enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), being the most relevant to human disease. To mitigate food safety risks, preharvest intervention strategies have been implemented with the aim to reduce EHEC in cattle. One class of interventions that has been widely used in feedlots is direct-fed microbials (DFMs), which can contain various dosing rates of probiotic bacteria. Here we compare the use of two different doses of a commercially available DFM on total EHEC load in a commercial feedlot setting. The DFMs used …

Complete Genome Sequence Of Uv-Resistant Campylobacter Jejuni Rm3194, Including An 81.08-Kilobase Plasmid, Nereus W. Gunther Iv, Erin R. Reichenberger, James L. Bono

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Annually, Campylobacter spp. are responsible for the greatest number of foodborne gastrointestinal bacterial infections in the developed world (1, 2). However, Campylobacter spp. are nutritionally fastidious organisms requiring a microaerobic environment for survival (3). It remains uncertain by what mechanisms Campylobacter survives within multiple hostile environments in sufficient numbers to cause such significant amounts of human disease.

Campylobacter jejuni strain RM3194 was isolated from a clinical sample in 1994 from a human enteritis case at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, and was supplied to our laboratory by Robert Mandrell (ARS, Albany, CA) (4, …

Prothonotary Warbler Nestling Growth And Condition Inresponse To Variation In Aquatic And Terrestrial Preyavailability, Jenna C. Dodson, Nicholas J. Moy, Lesley P. Bulluck Jan 2016

Prothonotary Warbler Nestling Growth And Condition Inresponse To Variation In Aquatic And Terrestrial Preyavailability, Jenna C. Dodson, Nicholas J. Moy, Lesley P. Bulluck

Biology Publications

Aquatic prey subsidies entering terrestrial habitats are well documented, but little is known about the degree to which these resources provide fitness benefits to riparian consumers. Riparian species take advantage of seasonal pulses of both terrestrial and aquatic prey, although aquatic resources are often over-looked in studies of how diet influences the reproductive ecology of these organisms. Ideally, the timing of resource pulses should occur at the time of highest reproductive demand. This study investigates the availability of aquatic(mayfly) and terrestrial (caterpillar) prey resources as well as the nestling diet of the prothonotary warbler (Protonotaria citrea) at two sites along …

Achieving More With Less: Reform And Scaling Down Of Food Reserve Agency And Farmer Input Support Programme And Boosting Social Protection, Antony Chapoto, Rhoda Mofya-Mukuka, Thelma Namonje-Kapembwa, Olipa Zulu-Mbata, Brian Chisanga Jan 2016

Achieving More With Less: Reform And Scaling Down Of Food Reserve Agency And Farmer Input Support Programme And Boosting Social Protection, Antony Chapoto, Rhoda Mofya-Mukuka, Thelma Namonje-Kapembwa, Olipa Zulu-Mbata, Brian Chisanga

Zambia Social Science Journal

Zambia continues to suffer from a regime of ineffectual subsidies and insufficient social protection. Despite evidence showing how the country’s signature farming input and output subsidy programmes, i.e. the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) and the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) respectively, have failed to spur agricultural diversification, address low agricultural productivity, food security, and stubbornly high rural poverty rates, the country has continued to allocate significant resources towards their implementation. Notably, Zambia is currently grappling with the need to make some tough choices as it seeks to deliver on the Zambia-Plus Recovery Plan proposed by the Minister of Finance. Among …

A Long History Of Low Productivity In Zambia: Is It Time To Do Away With Blanket Recommendations?, Antony Chapoto, Lydia M. Chabala, Olipa N. Lungu

Zambia Social Science Journal

Although there have been calls to ramp up efforts to design and implement a fertiliser programme that recognises the spatial variability of soil fertility and climatic conditions in the country, Zambia like most countries in Africa, continues to rely heavily on outdated general fertiliser recommendations, which are uniform across geographic locations and crops. This could be one of the main reasons why Zambia continues to record low crop productivity despite government fertilizer subsidy programmes. Using soil analysis and household data collected in rural Zambia, this study presents a comparative analysis of location-specific fertilizer application versus blanket recommendation to demonstrate why …

Public Health Promotion In Bangladesh Through The Community Health Clinics: A Foucauldian Analysis, Biplab Kumar Halder Jan 2016

Public Health Promotion In Bangladesh Through The Community Health Clinics: A Foucauldian Analysis, Biplab Kumar Halder

Journal of Health Ethics

The system of community health clinics in Bangladesh is contributing largely to improving the public health status of rural communities in Bangladesh. The significant success of this health promotion program leads medicine to its summit of power to influence the prevalent power structure in rural Bangladesh. A critical analysis of this paradigm shift is demanded in the context of public health. A Foucauldian analysis of the public health scenario of Bangladesh is most relevant in this context. In the paper, I propose a critical analysis of the public health apparatus of Bangladesh as manifested in the community health clinics, from …

Does Theory Translate In The Trenches Of Short Term Mission Work?, Rhonda D. Hensley Jan 2016

Does Theory Translate In The Trenches Of Short Term Mission Work?, Rhonda D. Hensley

Journal of Health Ethics

Despite numerous criticisms in the literature on the ethics and sustainable outcomes of short term international mission trips, there can be positive outcomes for volunteers and for recipients of short term mission care efforts. Utilizing a theoretical framework that addresses efforts to promote sustainability can lead to a structured, productive, and satisfying experience. With effective host country partnerships and an organized model of care delivery, international mission volunteers can provide highly effective health care services that are specific to the health and cultural needs of the host community.

Neuroprotection Comparison Of Different Nutraceutical Compounds Against Mechanistically Distinct Cell Death Inducing Agents, Faten I. Taram Jan 2016

Neuroprotection Comparison Of Different Nutraceutical Compounds Against Mechanistically Distinct Cell Death Inducing Agents, Faten I. Taram

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), include the progressive loss of structure and function of neurons leading to neuronal death. All of these diseases are fatal, as there is no cure for them. The causes of these diseases are unknown; however, there are many proposed mechanisms that lead to neurodegenerative diseases. Oxidative stress is the leading cause of cell death in neurodegenerative diseases, in addition to other mechanisms including endoplasmic reticulum stress, proteasome inhibition, nitrosative stress, inflammation and excitotoxicity. More understanding of the death mechanisms at work in neurodegeneration is necessary to …

The Association Of Preschool Enrollment And The Predictive Traits Of Special Education Identification, Sarie Elizabeth Ates-Patterson Jan 2016

The Association Of Preschool Enrollment And The Predictive Traits Of Special Education Identification, Sarie Elizabeth Ates-Patterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Early childhood education (ECE) consists of educational programs that serve children in the preschool years and are designed to improve elementary school performance. Colorado early childhood education programming has two preschool classifications that include Colorado Preschool Program (CPP) which is determined by a student's risk factors, and the State Preschool Special Education (Preschool SPED) program which is determined by the student's identified disability prior to attending elementary school. For the two cohorts who participated in Colorado preschool programming during 2009-2010 school year, special education and demographic extant data are compared in order to study the subsequent identification for special education …

Aid Effectiveness In Afghanistan: The Role Of Local Human Capacity In Explaining The Health Sector's Success, Ahmad Najim Dost Jan 2016

Aid Effectiveness In Afghanistan: The Role Of Local Human Capacity In Explaining The Health Sector's Success, Ahmad Najim Dost

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effectiveness of development assistance is one of the most contested debates in international development studies. While some of its most ardent supporters consider aid as the key to solving the plight of the developing world (e.g. Sachs 2006), its opponents consider it as part of the problem rather than the solution (e.g. Moyo 2009). By investigating the case of Afghanistan as one of the world's largest aid recipients from 2002 to 2014, I show that one reason for arriving at such diametrically opposed conclusions lies in the narrow definition of aid effectiveness as income growth rates. When this definition …

It's A Whole New Ball Game: The Mitchell Report, Performance Enhancing Drugs, And Professional Sports, Brian J. Schrader Jan 2016

It's A Whole New Ball Game: The Mitchell Report, Performance Enhancing Drugs, And Professional Sports, Brian J. Schrader

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the findings of a congressional investigation into the use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) in Major League Baseball, known as the Mitchell Report. It analyzes the primary arguments presented in the report, the argument for integrity, role-models, and apology specifically, through the lens of governmentality and moral regulation. It argues that the report represents a distinct mode of governance that seeks to condemn PED use in a moralizing way. This mode of governance is characterized by its emergence from a variety of locations as opposed to the relatively simple use of the state and its legal apparatus. …

The Effect Of Soil Erosion On Children’S Calorie Intake Among Corn-Producing Households, Davao Region, Philippines, Pedro A. Alviola Iv, Jon Marx P. Sarmiento, Nikko L. Laorden, Nilo B. Oponda

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

Soil erosion is a constant challenge to farm productivity and profitability. However, extending the effect to food expenditure and children’s nutrition is yet to be explored. In this research, an attempt was made to establish the path linking soil erosion to children’s calorie intake levels. Using the geo-coordinates of Mindanao soil erosion areas from the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR), Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to identify the research sites for corn producing households in Davao region. A total of 125 samples were analyzed. A 24-hour food-frequency recall survey was conducted and conversion of food consumption to …

Retrograde Tibiopedal Access As A Bail-Out Procedure For Endovascular Intervention Complications, Ahmed Amro, Alaa Gabi, Adee El-Hamdani, Naveed Iqbal, Mehiar El-Hamdani Jan 2016

Retrograde Tibiopedal Access As A Bail-Out Procedure For Endovascular Intervention Complications, Ahmed Amro, Alaa Gabi, Adee El-Hamdani, Naveed Iqbal, Mehiar El-Hamdani

Cardiology

Introduction. Retrograde pedal access has been well described in the literature as a secondary approach for limb salvage in critical limb ischemia (CLI) patients. In this manuscript we are presenting a case where retrograde tibiopedal access has been used as a bail-out procedure for the management of superficial femoral artery (SFA) intervention complications.

Procedure/Technique. After development of a perforation while trying to cross the totally occluded mid SFA using the conventional CFA access, we were able to cross the mid SFA lesion after accessing the posterior tibial artery in a retrograde fashion and delivered a self-expanding stent which created a …

The High Cost Of Reproduction In Sea Otters Necessitates Unique Physiological Adaptations, Nicole Thometz, T. L. Kendall, B. P. Richter, T. M. Williams Jan 2016

The High Cost Of Reproduction In Sea Otters Necessitates Unique Physiological Adaptations, Nicole Thometz, T. L. Kendall, B. P. Richter, T. M. Williams

Biology Faculty Publications

Resting Superimposed on inherently high basal metabolic demands, the additional energetic requirements of reproduction can push female sea otters beyond physiological limits. Indeed, the resulting energy imbalance contributes to disproportionately high rates of mortality at the end of lactation in this species. To examine and quantify metabolic changes associated with reproduction, we measured the resting metabolic rate (RMR) of a female sea otter across gestation, lactation and non-reproductive periods. Concurrently, measurements were made on a non-breeding control female. Our results suggest that RMR declines during gestation. Conversely, RMR increases during lactation, reaches a peak at 3–4 months postpartum, and remains …

Sports Medicine For Coaches- A Coaching Clinic, Jessica Slavik Jan 2016

Sports Medicine For Coaches- A Coaching Clinic, Jessica Slavik

Master of Arts in Sport Management

Sports medicine is a vast area of medicine, and expecting a coach to understand all of the medical knowledge is improbable. A coaching clinic that entails basic knowledge of first aid and injury prevention for coaches is critical in today's age where young athletes are put at risk of injury. By utilizing the knowledge and skills of the area clinic, Affiliated Communities Medical Centers, the coaching clinic aims to educate coaches with the latest techniques in injury treatment and prevention. Using local venues to educate the coaches allows for easy access, and small size to ensure quality learning. The coaching …
