The effect of surface or lattice modification of nanoparticles (NPs) on terrestrial plants is poorly understood. We investigated the impact of different zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs on green pea (Pisum sativum L.), one of the highest consumed legumes globally. Pea plants were grown for 65 d in soil amended with commercially available bare ZnO NPs (10 nm), 2 wt% alumina doped (Al2O3@ZnO NPs, 15 nm), or 1 wt% aminopropyltriethoxysilane coated NPs (KH550@ZnO NP, 20 nm) at 250 and 1000 mg NP/kg soil inside a greenhouse. Bulk (ZnO) and ionic Zn (zinc chloride) were included as controls. Plant fresh and dry …

Agricultural Development In A Tibetan Township, Scott Waldron, Pubuzhuoma N/A, Colin Brown, Wujincuomu N/A, Tao Jin, Wei Na

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Rural Tibet has been confronted with a series of new and major forces over the last decade including new opportunities to work off-farm and to collect caterpillar fungus, buoyant food markets, and after decades of neglect, renewed policy attention to agriculture. This paper examines semi-subsistent agricultural structures at the household level, as the base from which rural Tibetans pursue livelihood strategies and adapt to new opportunities and challenges. With small land sizes and precarious food balances, agricultural households have been given a boost through rising prices and increased policy attention to agriculture that manifests itself at local levels. This has …

Telling About The South: An Autobiography Of Antiquity, James Carson

Study the South

The South’s antiquity is a story of theft. Legitimacy can’t be found nor can it be contrived. It can only be earned, by understanding that what happened at Jamestown, Stono, Cowpens, Appomattox, and Selma are in some ways just so many quick breaths taken in a very long life. Only when we try to understand how our usurpations have grafted our lives onto much more ancient rootstock can we begin to resituate how we live and how we think about how we live.

Three Popular Medicinal Mushroom Supplements: A Review Of Human Clinical Trials, Megan Frost

Faculty Publications

There are many mushroom supplements on the market claiming a variety of health benefits, and it is difficult to discern which of these claims is backed by reliable research. Most of the existing research is conducted using either human cells or animal models rather than human participants. Without being tested directly on humans, this research has limited application. A review of the literature reveals a relatively small number of studies have been conducted using human patients and those that do exist vary widely in study design and quality. This article brings together all the existing studies that involve human participants …

Comparative Analysis Of Xenorhabdus Koppenhoeferi Gene Expression During Symbiotic Persistence In The Host Nematode, Ruisheng An, Parwinder Grewal

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Species of Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus bacteria form mutualistic associations with Steinernema and Heterorhabditis nematodes, respectively and serve as model systems for studying microbe-animal symbioses. Here, we profiled gene expression of Xenorhabdus koppenhoeferi during their symbiotic persistence in the newly formed infective juveniles of the host nematode Steinernema scarabaei through the selective capture of transcribed sequences (SCOTS). The obtained gene expression profile was then compared with other nematode-bacteria partnerships represented by Steinernema carpocapsae-Xenorhabdus nematophila and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora-Photorhabdus temperata. A total of 29 distinct genes were identified to be up-regulated and 53 were down-regulated in X. koppenhoeferi while in S. scarabaei infective …

Clinician Numeracy: The Development Of An Assessment Measure For Doctors, Anne A. Taylor, Lucie M. Byrne-Davis Jan 2016

Clinician Numeracy: The Development Of An Assessment Measure For Doctors, Anne A. Taylor, Lucie M. Byrne-Davis

Numeracy

Low numeracy in doctors poses serious risks to patient safety because inaccurate drug dose calculation may lead to under-treatment or overdose, while erroneous data interpretation affects medical decision making. Most research on numeracy in healthcare focuses on health numeracy in patients, while research on numeracy in doctors, “clinician numeracy”, is limited, partly due to the lack of a suitable assessment measure. We developed a new assessment, the Medical Interpretation and Numeracy Test (MINT), to assess clinician numeracy. The MINT tests computational, analytical and statistical constructs, using a combination of questions validated in other studies, and new test material specifically designed …

Associations Between Neighborhoods And Summer Meals Sites: Measuring Access To Federal Summer Meals Programs, Rachel L. Wilkerson, Durwesh Khalfe, Kathy Krey

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

While the challenge of access to healthy food features prominently in the literature, access to federal nutrition programs, specifically USDA’s Summer Meals Program, is relatively undocumented. Participation in the program depends on a number of complex variables, including site availability, neighborhood dynamics, and community investment. The purpose of this study is to determine neighborhood indicators that correlate with the coverage and density of summer meals sites in Texas. Attributes of the community and the number of meal sites were collected at the census tract level, and paired t-tests revealed the statistical significance of differences between tracts with and without meal …

Sex-Specific Fungal Communities Of The Dioicous Moss Ceratodon Purpureus, Mehmet Ali Balkan Jan 2016

Sex-Specific Fungal Communities Of The Dioicous Moss Ceratodon Purpureus, Mehmet Ali Balkan

Dissertations and Theses

Mosses display a number of hallmark life history traits that influence their ecology at the population and community level. The long lived separation of sexes observed in the haploid gametophyte (dioicy) is one such feature of particular importance, as it is observed in the majority of bryophytes and creates intraspecific specialization of male and female individuals.

The prevalence of sexually dimorphic mosses raises the possibility of sex-specific interactions with fungi as observed in some vascular plants. Here I investigated how moss sex shapes fungal communities associated with gametophytic tissues of the ubiquitous moss, Ceratodon purpureus. Using greenhouse populations of …

Effets De La Posture De Travail Sur Les Patrons Musculaires De La Région Lombaire Lors D’Une Tâche Répétitive, Julie Côté, David Antle, Kim Emery, Suzy Ngomo

The Distribution Of Α-Amylase Activity Along The Digestive Tract Of Juvenile Bluegill (Lepomis Macrochirus) And Its Comparison With Selected Fish Species, Namrata Giri, Yongfang Zhang, Gregory A. Dudenhoeffer, Thomas R. Omara-Alwala Jan 2016

Omara-Alwala

Cooperative Extension Research Publications

Carbohydrates are the least expensive form of dietary energy for animals. Although fish don't have specific requirements for dietary carbohydrates, they must be provided with the appropriate levels of carbohydrates in their diets. Moderate levels of carbohydrate could support fishs' better growth performance and may decrease the use of the more expensive protein and lipids in the diet. Different fish have different ability to utilize digestible carbohydrates, which may relate to the relative amount of amylase activity present in the digestive system of the various species. α-amylase is a key enzyme for carbohydrate digestion. Bluegill, an important forage and recreational …

Improved irrigation use efficiency is an important tool for intensifying and diversifying agriculture in Nepal, resulting in higher economic yield from irrigated farmlands with a minimum input of water. Research was conducted to evaluate the effect of irrigation method (furrow vs. drip) on the productivity of nutritious fodder species during off-monsoon dry periods in different elevation zones of central Nepal. A split-block factorial design was used. The factors considered were treatment location, fodder crop, and irrigation method. Commonly used local agronomical practices were followed in all respects except irrigation method. Results revealed that location effect was significant (p < 0.01) with highest fodder productivity seen for the middle elevation site, Syangja. Species effects were also significant, with teosinte (Euchlaena mexicana) having higher yield than cowpea (Vigna unguiculata). Irrigation method impacted green biomass yield (higher with furrow irrigation) but both methods yielded similar dry biomass, while water use was 73% less under drip irrigation. Our findings indicated that the controlled application of water through drip irrigation is able to produce acceptable yields of nutritionally dense fodder species during dry seasons, leading to more effective utilization and resource conservation of available land, fertilizer and water. Higher productivity of these nutritional fodders resulted in higher milk productivity for livestock smallholders. The ability to grow fodder crops year-round in lowland and hill regions of Nepal with limited water storages using low-cost, water-efficient drip irrigation may greatly increase livestock productivity and, hence, the economic security of smallholder farmers.
