Faculty Publications

© 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V. Control of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) remains a critical issue due to the prevalence of anthelmintic resistance. The objective of the experiment was to determine the efficacy of copper oxide wire particles (COWP) from three commercial sources and a combination of COWP and albendazole to control GIN and/or Haemonchus contortus in lambs. Naturally infected Katahdin lambs in early June 2014 and 2015 were randomly assigned to receive no COWP (CON; n = 9 and 12) or 2 g COWP in a gel capsule as Copasure® (COP; n = 4 and 17; Animax Ltd.), copper oxide-wire …

Vaccines And The Looming Threat Of Syphilis, Charles T. Ambrose Jan 2016

Vaccines And The Looming Threat Of Syphilis, Charles T. Ambrose

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

During the past several decades, syphilis has increased in the US and explosively so in China and Russia. While most current cases can be cured by penicillin or second line antibiotics, strains of the syphilis spirochete (Treponema pallidum) resistant to the latter have emerged. And the potential of strains to acquire resistance to penicillin via plasmids has recently been recognized. The 36 million-plus undertreated cases of syphilis in the world represent metaphorically a vast global 37°C incubator allowing exchange of antibiotic resistant genes among the human-borne bacteria and theoretically permitting the emergence of penicillin resistant strains.None has yet been identified but …

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

Obesity is a well-known risk factor for colorectal cancer but precisely how it influences risks of malignancy remains unclear. During colon cancer development in humans or animals, attenuation of the colonic cell surface receptor guanylyl cyclase C (GUCY2C) that occurs due to loss of its paracrine hormone ligand guanylin contributes universally to malignant progression. In this study, we explored a link between obesity and GUCY2C silencing in colorectal cancer. Using genetically engineered mice on different diets, we found that diet-induced obesity caused a loss of guanylin expression in the colon with subsequent GUCY2C silencing, epithelial dysfunction, and tumorigenesis. Mechanistic investigations …

Plant Microfossils Recovered From Dental Calculus At Casas Grandes, Mexico, Daniel King, Michael T. Searcy, Kyle Waller

Faculty Publications

Microfossil analysis is a technique used to better understand prehistoric diets. As part of a larger multinational project, we gathered and analyzed 112 samples of dental calculus (fossilized plaque) from human remains discovered at Paquimé and other sites in the Casas Grandes river valley to identify various microfossils still present in the silica matrix. With this information, we are able to better understand the flora present during ancient times and how it was used (food, processing, etc.).

How Different Are Men Who Do Not Know Their Hiv Status From Those Who Do? Results From An U.S. Online Study Of Gay And Bisexual Men, Christian Grov, H. Jonathon Rendina, Jeffrey T. Parsons

Publications and Research

We compared self-described HIV-positive (31.6%, n=445), HIV-negative (56.8%, n=801), and HIV-unknown (11.6%, n=164) gay and bisexual men (GBM) on sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics. Participants from across the U.S. were enrolled via a popular sexual networking website to complete an online survey. In total, 44.8% of HIV-negative and HIV-unknown men said they had not been tested for HIV in the CDC-recommended last 6 months. HIV-unknown men significantly differed from HIV-negative and HIV-positive men in sexual behavior and HIV status disclosure patterns. HIV-unknown men were more willing than HIV-negative men to take PrEP; however, HIV-unknown men were significantly less likely than others …

Climate Change Impact On Agricultural Land Use In West Africa And Its Implication On Regional Climate Projection, Kazi F. Ahmed Jan 2016

Climate Change Impact On Agricultural Land Use In West Africa And Its Implication On Regional Climate Projection, Kazi F. Ahmed

Doctoral Dissertations

Projection of climate change impact on anthropogenic land use and the resulting feedback to the regional climate in West Africa is the core focus of this research. In the first part, we evaluate climate change impact on future crop yield, a key factor affecting agricultural land use in a region. Using a process-based crop model at a regional scale, we project future changes in cereal crop yields as a result of climate change for the West African countries. Without agricultural adaptation, the long-term mean of crop yield is projected to decrease in most of the countries by the middle of …

The Impact Of The California Drought On Food Security Among Rural Families Of Mexican Origin, Lizette Rodriguez, Marcel Horowitz, Dorina Espinoza, Alberto Aguilera, Adela De La Torre, Lucia L. Kaiser

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Introduction:

The year 2015 marks the fourth year of a drought in California. With no signs of the drought improving, communities in California are left to prioritize their water usage. In the Central Valley, the limited water supply has forced farmers to prioritize on acreage and planting, decisions that trickle down and may impact farmworker families.

Objective:

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of a drought in California on family decision-making and coping strategies in the context of broader community changes affecting rural families of Mexican-origin.

Methods:

This study recruited participants from the Niños Sanos, …

Comparison Of Terrain Indices And Landform Classification Procedures In Low-Relief Agricultural Fields, Derek A. Evans, Karl W. J. Williard, Jon E. Schoonover Jan 2016

Comparison Of Terrain Indices And Landform Classification Procedures In Low-Relief Agricultural Fields, Derek A. Evans, Karl W. J. Williard, Jon E. Schoonover

Journal of Geospatial Applications in Natural Resources

Landforms control the spatial distribution of numerous factors associated with agronomy and water quality. Although curvature and slope are the fundamental surface derivatives used in landform classification procedures, methodologies for landform classifications have been performed with other terrain indices including the topographic position index (TPI) and the convergence index (CI). The objectives of this study are to compare plan curvature, the convergence index, profile curvature, and the topographic position index at various scales to determine which better identifies the spatial variability of soil phosphorus (P) within three low relief agricultural fields in central Illinois and to compare how two methods …

Uncoupling Shear And Uniaxial Elastic Moduli Of Semiflexible Biopolymer Networks: Compression-Softening And Stretch-Stiffening., Anne S G Van Oosten, Mahsa Vahabi, Albert J Licup, Abhinav Sharma, Peter Galie, Fred C Mackintosh, Paul A Janmey

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Gels formed by semiflexible filaments such as most biopolymers exhibit non-linear behavior in their response to shear deformation, e.g., with a pronounced strain stiffening and negative normal stress. These negative normal stresses suggest that networks would collapse axially when subject to shear stress. This coupling of axial and shear deformations can have particularly important consequences for extracellular matrices and collagenous tissues. Although measurements of uniaxial moduli have been made on biopolymer gels, these have not directly been related to the shear response. Here, we report measurements and simulations of axial and shear stresses exerted by a range of hydrogels subjected …

The Influence Of Pre-Wash Chopping And Storage Conditions Of Parsley On The Efficacy Of Disinfection Against S. Typhimurium, Dima Faour-Klingbeil, Victor Kuri, Ewen C.D. Todd Jan 2016

The Influence Of Pre-Wash Chopping And Storage Conditions Of Parsley On The Efficacy Of Disinfection Against S. Typhimurium, Dima Faour-Klingbeil, Victor Kuri, Ewen C.D. Todd

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Initial chopping of parsley before washing for subsequent processing into ready-to-eat foods later in the day is common in some restaurants. The aim was to evaluate the influence of pre-wash chopping on the S. Typhimurium decontamination by common washing and disinfection methods including the use of vinegar (4%, v/v, acetic acid), 0.25 g/l sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC), and water combined with manual agitation. This study demonstrated limited efficiency of applied methods and that holding pre-wash chopped leaves at 30 °C reduced the effectiveness of all washing solutions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging indicated initiation of biofilm formation after 24 h at …

Observations On Growth And Maturation Of A Male Alloscorpiops Wongpromi (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae), František Kovařík, Michael E. Soleglad, Graeme Lowe, Jana Plíškova, František Šťáhlavský

Euscorpius

An adult male of Alloscorpiops wongpromi Kovařík et al., 2013 was raised from birth, and its five exuviae (instars 2 through 6) were compared to the resulting adult. This adult was contrasted with the original holotype male specimen, which was determined to be only a subadult after the fifth ecdysis. The hemispermatophore of A. wongpromi is illustrated and described here for the first time. In addition to morphological analysis we also describe the karyotype of Alloscorpiops wongpromi (2n=95). Based on comparative analysis of pectinal tooth counts, it is determined that the holotype of A. troglodytes Lourenço & Pham (2015) represents …

Membrane Glycerolipidome Of Soybean Root Hairs And Its Response To Nitrogen And Phosphate Availability, Fang Wei, Brian Fanella, Liang Guo, Xuemin Wang Jan 2016

Membrane Glycerolipidome Of Soybean Root Hairs And Its Response To Nitrogen And Phosphate Availability, Fang Wei, Brian Fanella, Liang Guo, Xuemin Wang

Biology Department Faculty Works

Root hairs are tubular extensions of specific root epidermal cells important in plant nutrition and water absorption. To determine membrane glycerolipids in root hairs and roots may differ, as well as their respective response to nutrient availability, this study analyzed the membrane glycerolipid species in soybean root hairs and in roots stripped of root hairs, and their response to nitrogen (N) and phosphate (Pi) supplementation. The ratio of phospholipids to galactolipids was 1.5 fold higher in root hairs than in stripped roots. Under Pi deficiency, the ratio of phospholipids to galactolipids in stripped roots decreased with the greatest decrease found …
