Jefferson Nursing Oral Histories
Eileen Garrity’s first draw to the medical field came through her interest in Christiaan Barnard’s work as a cardiac surgeon. After deciding to pursue nursing instead of medicine, Ms. Garrity entered the Jefferson School of Nursing’s Diploma program, graduating in 1976. She began her career as an ER and ICU nurse, working at Atlantic City Medical Center, Pennsylvania Hospital, and Mercy Fitzgerald. She eventually left hospital nursing to work at Blue Cross, ending there as the manager of their risk programs department before moving on to Taylor Hospital as a director of social work case management and later manager of …

Diabetes Educational Program, Djenane Bartholomew
DNP and Student Works
Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, despite medical advancements (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2011). Diabetes management and education is the key to curtail the rapid spread of this disease. As American baby boomers age, the diagnoses of diabetes increase and cause the disease to reach epidemic proportions (King, Matheson, Chirina, & Shankar, 2013). A New York City nursing home conducted a needs assessment in 2013, which revealed an increase in the readmission of residents with diabetes or diabetes-related complications. These sobering facts led to the project question: Does a diabetes educational program in …

Research On Energy Efficiency Of Pulse Electric Field Equipment, Tian Yuan, Ping Xueliang, Yao Wenlong, Jiang Yi
Food and Machinery
PEF sterilization technology is a popular sterilization technique, but the issue of cost for sterilization affects its industrialization process. The PEF sterilization equipment was studied from the perspective of the waveform energy efficiency and the energy efficiency of the chamber. The results showed that the closer the waveform was to a square wave waveform, the higher energy efficiency was, and the energy efficiency of food with higher conductivity is significantly higher than that of food with low conductivity. The energy efficiency can be improved by increasing the power of the chamber.

Leadership And African Agency For Development In Post-Fifty Africa, Chikwendu C. Ukaegbu
Journal of Retracing Africa
The year 2010 was a model year for the celebration of fifty years of political independence among African countries. Assessments of the human condition in Africa show that the continent, especially sub-Saharan Africa, has lagged behind other regions of the world in terms of development. Based on the analysis of the constants of development, this paper argues that effective development is fundamentally driven by the maximum deployment of organized endogenous human agency defined as the capacity of individuals or groups to think, act, and impact their social environments. Because African agency was not properly shepherded in the first fifty years …

Journal of Retracing Africa
The Journal of Retracing Africa (JORA) is honored to publish the second volume dedicated to some of the issues surrounding Africa’s socio-political and economic development. The attitude in the West over the last three decades has been to exaggerate and generalize problems in Africa and ignore many positive news that typify modern Africa. This unreliable approach has continued to becloud proper understanding of the problems African countries face, the domestic and external forces that created them, and the efforts Africans h ave made to address them. The impression that Africa remains a lost continent persists in the minds of many …

Though she originally decided to become an accountant during college, Breanne Ward soon realized she would rather be in a field where she could work more closely with people. She chose nursing because she wanted the opportunity to physically care for others. Ms. Ward was accepted as a nursing student in Jefferson’s Full-time Accelerated Coursework Track (FACT) program, during which time she discovered an interest in community health through both her non-hospital clinical experiences and volunteering with Jeff HEALTH (Helping East Africa Link To Health). After working in the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and completing her Master’s in Community Systems …

How Diversity Extends The Grazing Season At Dogwood Farm, Debby Dulworth
Kentucky Grazing Conference
This article was previously published in Cow Country News.
Cattle are a valuable resource these days, in ways that most people, consumers and producers alike, haven’t yet realized. Putting some other resources into making the change for a better grazing system makes sense, especially here in Kentucky, where grass has, in the past, been the basis of a healthy and expansive economy. Grass can once again be the basis for a healthy economy, if enough people with the vision to see its possibilities get involved and make it happen. A truly healthy economy begins with good human health and …

Soy Hulls: More Than Just A Feed Supplement, Glen E. Aiken, Michael Flythe
Kentucky Grazing Conference
There is approximately 35 million acres of tall fescue in the USA, with most of this acreage being utilized in hay meadows and grazed pastures in a region between the temperate northeast and subtropical southeast and commonly referred to as the Fescue Belt. Popularity of the grass is due to its productivity, persistence, and low cost of management. Unfortunately, a fungal endophyte that infects most plants of tall fescue produces ergot alkaloid toxins that cause a toxicosis in cattle and other grazing livestock. Fescue toxicosis may reduce reproductive performance of cow herds and weaning weights, and reduce post-weaning weight gain …

Jefferson Nursing Oral Histories
From a young age Pat Owens had a strong interest in nursing, and as a high school student she was even the President of her school’s Future Nurses Club. However, she also really liked home economics so when she went to college she decided to pursue home economics rather than nursing. After working as at the Dairy Council as a nutrition consultant and later at Campbell’s Soup in their test kitchen, Ms. Owens decided that she wanted to instead pursue a career in nursing. After looking into different programs in the Philadelphia area, she chose Jefferson, entering in 1990 and …

Beyond The Fiber: Novel Spider Silk Coatings And Adhesives, Danielle A. Gaztambide, Breton A. Day
Research on Capitol Hill
Natural spider silks have long been recognized for their combination of incredible strength and elasticity. Spider silk is more elastic than nylon, tougher than Kevlar, and stronger than steel by weight. Due to an inability to farm spiders, much work has been done to produce spider silks in transgenic hosts for large -scale production. Our work was done using recombinant spider silk proteins produced in transgenic goats and the bacteria E. coli.
More recently spider silks have also been recognized for their biocompatibility and lack of immunogenicity. Spider silks' incredible strength and ability to be implanted safely within the body …

Prevention of childhood obesity is a global priority. The school setting offers access to large numbers of children and the ability to provide supportive environments for quality physical activity and nutrition. This article describes Project Energize, a through-school physical activity and nutrition programme that celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2015 so that it might serve as a model for similar practices, initiatives and policies elsewhere. The programme was envisaged and financed by the Waikato District Health Board of New Zealand in 2004 and delivered by Sport Waikato to 124 primary schools as a randomised controlled trial from 2005 to 2006. …

Marshall Journal of Medicine
Vitamin D is known to play an essential role in calcium homeostasis; however, excessive amounts can have harmful effects. Calcium and vitamin D levels are known to be influenced by drug interactions and pathology ranging from of cancer to cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D supplementation has become widespread, and it is important for clinicians to understand the way that certain conditions and medications interact with vitamin D and calcium homeostasis. The purpose of this review is to outline the benefits and adverse effects of vitamin D and how its levels are affected by certain pathologic and pharmacologic interactions.

ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: Generational differences are often viewed as shaping the overall attitudes and actions of different age cohorts. It is essential to understand the motivations and generational differences in primary care physicians for efforts to recruit, retain, and educate the future physician workforce. Determining what factors most influence different generations of primary care physicians when choosing a practice site is essential to build our future primary care system. This study examined generational differences in the factors that attracted primary care physicians to their current practice.
Methods: A survey instrument was mailed to all active members of the North …
