Mathematical Models Are A Powerful Method To Understand And Control The Spread Of Huanglongbing, Rachel A Taylor, Erin A Mordecai, Christopher A Gilligan, Jason R. Rohr, Leah R Johnson

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Huanglongbing (HLB), or citrus greening, is a global citrus disease occurring in almost all citrus growing regions. It causes substantial economic burdens to individual growers, citrus industries and governments. Successful management strategies to reduce disease burden are desperately needed but with so many possible interventions and combinations thereof it is difficult to know which are worthwhile or cost-effective. We review how mathematical models have yielded useful insights into controlling disease spread for other vector-borne plant diseases, and the small number of mathematical models of HLB. We adapt a malaria model to HLB, by including temperature-dependent psyllid traits, "flushing" of trees, …

A Framework For Assessing High School Students' Statistical Reasoning, S.W. Chan, Z. Ismail, B. Sumintono Nov 2016

A Framework For Assessing High School Students' Statistical Reasoning, S.W. Chan, Z. Ismail, B. Sumintono

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Based on a synthesis of literature, earlier studies, analyses and observations on high school students, this study developed an initial framework for assessing students' statistical reasoning about descriptive statistics. Framework descriptors were established across five levels of statistical reasoning and four key constructs. The former consisted of idiosyncratic reasoning, verbal reasoning, transitional reasoning, procedural reasoning, and integrated process reasoning. The latter include describing data, organizing and reducing data, representing data, and analyzing and interpreting data. In contrast to earlier studies, this initial framework formulated a complete and coherent statistical reasoning framework. A statistical reasoning assessment tool was then constructed from …

Aspect Instruction And Narrative Inferencing, Christine Marie Wytaske Nov 2016

Aspect Instruction And Narrative Inferencing, Christine Marie Wytaske

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The guiding questions in this research project are Does explicitly teaching aspect to advanced-level adult learners of English lead to greater understanding of causal inferences in narrative context? Does a delayed post-test show that teaching contributes to integration into learners’ knowledge base for later acquisition and not just lead to intake? Aspect is a complicated semantic domain so in many ways it remains difficult for students to learn, understand, and apply. The motivating factor for this research was to incorporate textual enhancement with explicit instruction in order to assist students in noticing aspect and in making correct inferences. This study …

Three Dimensional Printing Of Bone Tissue Engineering Scaffold: Design, Structure, And Mechanical Properties / Mitra Asadi-Eydivand, Eydivand Mitra Asadi Nov 2016

Three Dimensional Printing Of Bone Tissue Engineering Scaffold: Design, Structure, And Mechanical Properties / Mitra Asadi-Eydivand, Eydivand Mitra Asadi

Student Works (2010-2019)

Techniques to restore and replace bones in large fractures are still a major clinical need in the field of orthopedic surgery. Thus, tissue engineering is one of the most hopeful approaches for developing engineered alternatives for damaged bones. Scaffolds are important part of bone tissue engineering (BTE). They are three-dimensional (3D) porous structures that are expected to, at least, partially imitate the extracellular matrix (ECM) of natural bone. Due to the natural properties of bone that are similar to calcium-based ceramics, the fabrication of scaffolds with the same properties as patient’s bone and adaptability to fracture defect are still a …

Evaluation Of Search And Rescue Planning Tools On The West Florida Shelf, Benjamin O'Loughlin Nov 2016

Evaluation Of Search And Rescue Planning Tools On The West Florida Shelf, Benjamin O'Loughlin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Coast Guard conducts over 20,000 search and rescue cases a year with approximately 5% of them occurring within the coastal waters of the West Florida Shelf (WFS). Each search effort is planned using the Coast Guard’s Search and Rescue Optimal Planning System (SAROPS) which uses model inputs to create composite probability distributions based on the results of Monte Carlo projections of thousands of particle trajectories. However, SAROPS is limited by the quality of model inputs and their associated errors. This study utilizes observations from three surface drifter deployments on the WFS to evaluate the effectiveness of available surface current …

Pepper Mild Mottle Virus As A Surrogate For Enteric Viruses: Implications For Assessing Water Quality, Erin Michelle Symonds Nov 2016

Pepper Mild Mottle Virus As A Surrogate For Enteric Viruses: Implications For Assessing Water Quality, Erin Michelle Symonds

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Less than 10% of the world’s domestic wastewater is disinfected prior to discharge into surface waters; therefore, human exposure to diverse wastewater-related pathogens results in millions of cases of illness each year. Among the enteric pathogens, viruses represent an important group of emerging pathogens and are frequently the cause of food- and water-borne outbreaks of illness. Although the World Health Organization and many government agencies mandate the use of bacterial indicators to identify poor microbial water quality, it is well known that these indicators poorly correlate with fecal pollution contamination events and risk of disease. The field of public health-related …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Monosized Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle-Supported Lipid Bilayers For Targeted Therapeutic Delivery To Individual Cells, Paul Durfee

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSNP) supported-lipid bilayers, termed ‘protocells,’ represent a potentially transformative class of therapeutic and theranostic delivery vehicles. The field of targeted drug delivery poses considerable challenges that cannot be addressed with a single ‘magic bullet’. Consequently, the protocell has been designed as a modular platform composed of interchangeable biocompatible components. The mesoporous silica core can have variable size and shape to direct biodistribution and controlled pore size and surface chemistry to accommodate diverse cargos. The encapsulating supported lipid bilayer can be modified with targeting and trafficking ligands as well as polyethylene glycol (PEG) to effect selective binding, endosomal …

Mission-Focused Collections: Rebirth Of The 'Seminarbibliothek' As An E-Book Collection, E. Stewart Saunders, Charlotte Erdmann, Gretchen Stephens Nov 2016

Mission-Focused Collections: Rebirth Of The 'Seminarbibliothek' As An E-Book Collection, E. Stewart Saunders, Charlotte Erdmann, Gretchen Stephens

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

German universities built over the years highly specialized book collections for use by faculty and graduate students. The German term, “Seminarbibliothek,” is often applied to these types of collections, although examples can be found in universities across Europe. The purpose of this paper is to examine a similar type of collection using e-books in veterinary science and to compare this collection to the standard subject classified e-book collections. The study looks at how such a collection might be formed and defined and what possible effects this might have on the use of collections of this type.

BACKGROUND:

Research has shown that uninsured patients receive fewer radiographic studies during trauma care, but less is known as to whether differences in care are present among other insurance groups or across different time points during hospitalization. Our objective was to examine the number of radiographic studies administered to a cohort of trauma patients over the entire hospital stay as well as during the first 24-hours of care.

METHODS:

Patient data were obtained from an American College of Surgeons (ACS) verified Level I Trauma Center between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2012. We used negative binomial regression to construct …

Diverse, Noisy And Parallel: A New Spiking Neural Network Approach For Humanoid Robot Control, Rd Azambuja, A Cangelosi, Sv Adams

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

How exactly our brain works is still an open question, but one thing seems to be clear: biological neural systems are computationally powerful, robust and noisy. Using the Reservoir Computing paradigm based on Spiking Neural Networks, also known as Liquid State Machines, we present results from a novel approach where diverse and noisy parallel reservoirs, totalling 3,000 modelled neurons, work together receiving the same averaged feedback. Inspired by the ideas of action learning and embodiment we use the safe and flexible industrial robot BAXTER in our experiments. The robot was taught to draw three different 2D shapes on top of …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Polyurethanes And Polyimides, Kenneth Kull Nov 2016

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Polyurethanes And Polyimides, Kenneth Kull

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Four novel high performance soft thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers utilizing methylene bis(4-cyclohexylisocyanate) as a hard segment, 1,4 butanediol as a chain extender and modified low crystallinity carbonate copolymer as a soft segment were synthesized. The samples were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), tensile, elongation, hardness, abrasion resistance and atomic force microscopy (AFM). SAXS data shows evidence of an interdomain "center-to-center" distance of 45Å. DSC traces show evidence of one glass transition temperature and a weak melting region. DMA analysis reveals a low temperature secondary relaxation and the glass to rubber transition followed by a rubbery plateau. All samples demonstrated the ability …

Comparing Game Simulation To Concept Models For Student-Centered Learning In Biology, Margaurete Romero Nov 2016

Comparing Game Simulation To Concept Models For Student-Centered Learning In Biology, Margaurete Romero

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Science education research continues to demonstrate improved learning with active-learning techniques compared to lectures. However, the question of which active-learning methods are the most effective for learning complex scientific principles in various context still remains. Models are commonly used in activities that allow students to simplify complex systems and understand how components interact. I investigated the outcomes for student learning and engagement of two model-based activities - concept models and game simulations. The activities were conducted in an introductory biology course in sixteen discussion sections. Eight sections were assigned to the concept model activity and eight to the simulation activity. …

High Power Optically Pumped Semiconductor Lasers For Sodium Guidestar Applications, Shawn W. Hackett Nov 2016

High Power Optically Pumped Semiconductor Lasers For Sodium Guidestar Applications, Shawn W. Hackett

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Optically pumped semiconductor lasers (OPSLs) are shown to provide a much more compact and less expensive source for illumination of the sodium layer of the mesosphere for use as a sodium laser guidestar via single and two photon excitation schemes. This represents a revolution in laser guidestar technology as the cost, size, and power requirements for a laser guidestar system are shown to have been decreased by an order of magnitude with guidestar performance shown to be similar to previous sources. Sodium laser guidestar sources for broadband simultaneous illumination of multiple lines are developed and simulated. Simulations are then compared …

Embodied Conceivability: How To Keep The Phenomenal Concept Strategy Grounded, Guy Dove, Andreas Elpidorou Nov 2016

Embodied Conceivability: How To Keep The Phenomenal Concept Strategy Grounded, Guy Dove, Andreas Elpidorou

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The Phenomenal Concept Strategy (PCS) offers the physicalist perhaps the most promising means of explaining why the connection between mental facts and physical facts appears to be contingent even though it is not. In this essay, we show that the large body of evidence suggesting that our concepts are often embodied and grounded in sensorimotor systems speaks against standard forms of the PCS. We argue, nevertheless, that it is possible to formulate a novel version of the PCS that is thoroughly in keeping with embodied cognition, focuses on features of physical concepts, and succeeds in explaining the appearance of contingency.

Smartsignplay: Lily Learns American Sign Language, Jeremiah Doody Nov 2016

Smartsignplay: Lily Learns American Sign Language, Jeremiah Doody

DHI Digital Projects Showcase

Many children are born either wholly or partially deaf, leaving parents to wonder how they can communicate with, and teach their child. For a hearing parent, unfamiliar with American Sign Language (ASL), traditional methods can be exasperating. Additional methods are helpful to reinforce this learning process. The teaching method needs to be effective, yet easy enough for a 2 year old to pick up. Likewise, the premise needs to actually hold the child’s attention. SmartSignPlay was proposed as an interactive smartphone, or tablet, game designed to make teaching ASL easier and fun. The game was to be point and click, …

Representations Of The Knowledge Economy: Irish Newspapers' Discourses On A Key Policy Idea, Brian Trench Nov 2016

Representations Of The Knowledge Economy: Irish Newspapers' Discourses On A Key Policy Idea, Brian Trench

Irish Communication Review

FROM TIME TO TIME, notions take hold in society in such a way that they become reference ideas across diverse social sectors, and terms associated with these reference ideas proliferate in public discourses and media of various kinds. This is notably true for the ‘knowledge economy’ and ‘knowledge society’; these terms have largely displaced other terms to describe the particular character of advanced economies and societies in the early 21st century. Other terms have struggled to co-exist: ‘information society’ seems passé; ‘services society’, ‘audit society’ and ‘risk society’ are marginal or niche terms; ‘innovation society’ has had intermittent periods of …

Teilifís Na Gaeilge As A Public Sphere, Iarfhlaith Watson Nov 2016

Teilifís Na Gaeilge As A Public Sphere, Iarfhlaith Watson

Irish Communication Review

This paper employs the Irish language media to argue for a normative ideal of public access using the concept 'public sphere'. Public sphere as an ideal type contains a democratic potential which allows for universal participation in the formation of public opinion. Two problems exist with the public sphere as a concept in so far as the ideal does not correspond to the reality. On the one hand, it can be argued that the market dominates the public sphere and hampers the democratic, spontaneous and autonomous formation of public opinion. On the other, it can also be argued that the …

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We employ high-resolution spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry to derive the physical proper- ties and magnetic characteristics of the multiple system HD 164492C, located in the young open cluster M20. The spectrum reveals evidence of three components: a broad-lined early B star (HD 164492C1), a narrow-lined early B star (HD 164492C2) and a late B star (HD 164492C3). Components C2 and C3 exhibit significant (>100 km s−1) bulk radial velocity variations with a period of 12.5351(7) d that we attribute to eccentric binary motion around a common centre- of-mass. Component C1 exhibits no detectable radial velocity variations. Using constraints derived from …

Identification Of Hot Spots In Protein Structures Using Gaussian Network Model And Gaussian Naive Bayes, H Zhang, T Jiang, Guogen Shan Nov 2016

Identification Of Hot Spots In Protein Structures Using Gaussian Network Model And Gaussian Naive Bayes, H Zhang, T Jiang, Guogen Shan

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Residue fluctuations in protein structures have been shown to be highly associated with various protein functions. Gaussian network model (GNM), a simple representative coarse-grained model, was widely adopted to reveal function-related protein dynamics. We directly utilized the high frequency modes generated by GNM and further performed Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB) to identify hot spot residues. Two coding schemes about the feature vectors were implemented with varying distance cutoffs for GNM and sliding window sizes for GNB based on tenfold cross validations: one by using only a single high mode and the other by combining multiple modes with the highest frequency. …
