The Application Of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy To Immediately Diagnose The Protective Quality Of Coatings On Artistic And Architectural Metalwork, Kathryn Nicole Hosbein Nov 2016

The Application Of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy To Immediately Diagnose The Protective Quality Of Coatings On Artistic And Architectural Metalwork, Kathryn Nicole Hosbein

Dissertations and Theses

Corrosion is a spontaneous process that causes irreversible damage to nearly all metals, which has world-wide implications for architectural and artistic metalwork, such as bridges, buildings, airplanes and sculptures. Protective coatings such as wax, paint, or polymeric clear coatings are used to prolong the lifetime of metals such as steel and bronze. Unfortunately, these coatings fail over time due to oxidative damage by UV rays and by failure to exclude water that can carry salts and pollutants that cause corrosion of the underlying substrate. The current method of coating assessment is visual inspection but when coating failure is detected at …

Whiting Events Off Southwest Florida: Remote Sensing And Field Observations, Jacqueline Long

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

“Whiting” is a term used to describe a sharply defined patch of water that contains high levels of suspended, fine-grained calcium carbonate (CaCO3). These features are named for their bright (at times white) appearance when compared to surrounding waters, and have been found to occur globally, persisting for multiple consecutive days. Although whitings have been widely studied using chemical, biological, geological, and physical techniques, there has been little effort to document their spatio-temporal distributions in a systematic way, not to mention the lack of consensus on what generates whitings and allows them to persist for days to weeks …

Culturally Responsive Teaching: Implications For Educational Justice, Magnus O. Bassey Nov 2016

Culturally Responsive Teaching: Implications For Educational Justice, Magnus O. Bassey

Publications and Research

Educational justice is a major global challenge. In most underdeveloped countries, many students do not have access to education and in most advanced democracies, school attainment and success are still, to a large extent, dependent on a student’s social background. However, it has often been argued that social justice is an essential part of teachers’ work in a democracy. This article raises an important overriding question: how can we realize the goal of educational justice in the field of teaching? In this essay, I examine culturally responsive teaching as an educational practice and conclude that it is possible to realize …

Variable Moving Average Transform Stitching Waves, Vesselin Vatchev Nov 2016

Variable Moving Average Transform Stitching Waves, Vesselin Vatchev

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

A moving average transform in the plane with a variable size and shape window depending on the position and the ’time’ is studied. The main objective is to select the window parameters in such a way that the new transform converges smoothly to the identity transform at the boundary of a prescribed bounded plane region. A new approximation of solitary waves arising from Korteweg-de Vries equation is obtained based on results in the paper. Numerical implementation and examples are included.

Data Exfiltration Detection And Prevention: Virtually Distributed Pomdps For Practically Safer Networks, Sara Marie Mc Carthy, Arunesh Sinha, Milind Tambe, Pratyusa Manadhata Nov 2016

Data Exfiltration Detection And Prevention: Virtually Distributed Pomdps For Practically Safer Networks, Sara Marie Mc Carthy, Arunesh Sinha, Milind Tambe, Pratyusa Manadhata

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address the challenge of detecting and addressing advanced persistent threats (APTs) in a computer network, focusing in particular on the challenge of detecting data exfiltration over Domain Name System (DNS) queries, where existing detection sensors are imperfect and lead to noisy observations about the network’s security state. Data exfiltration over DNS queries involves unauthorized transfer of sensitive data from an organization to a remote adversary through a DNS data tunnel to a malicious web domain. Given the noisy sensors, previous work has illustrated that standard approaches fail to satisfactorily rise to the challenge of detecting exfiltration attempts. Instead, we …

Soil Microbial Biomass And Function Are Altered By 12 Years Of Crop Rotation, Marshall D. Mcdaniel, A. Stuart Grandy Nov 2016

Soil Microbial Biomass And Function Are Altered By 12 Years Of Crop Rotation, Marshall D. Mcdaniel, A. Stuart Grandy

Faculty Publications

Declines in plant diversity will likely reduce soil microbial biomass, alter microbial functions, and threaten the provisioning of soil ecosystem services. We examined whether increasing temporal plant biodiversity in agroecosystems (by rotating crops) can partially reverse these trends and enhance soil microbial biomass and function. We quantified seasonal patterns in soil microbial biomass, respiration rates, extracellular enzyme activity, and catabolic potential three times over one growing season in a 12-year crop rotation study at the W. K. Kellogg Biological Station LTER. Rotation treatments varied from one to five crops in a 3-year rotation cycle, but all soils were sampled under …

Elucidating The Effects Of Fluoro And Nitro Substituents On Halogen Bond Driven Assemblies Of Pyridyl-Capped Π-Conjugated Molecules, Suong T. Nguyen, Arnold L. Rheingold, Gregory S. Tschumper, Davita L. Watkins Nov 2016

Elucidating The Effects Of Fluoro And Nitro Substituents On Halogen Bond Driven Assemblies Of Pyridyl-Capped Π-Conjugated Molecules, Suong T. Nguyen, Arnold L. Rheingold, Gregory S. Tschumper, Davita L. Watkins

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Among recent advances toward efficient semiconducting materials, rational design guidelines have emerged focusing on the synergy between various intermolecular interactions to improve the solid-state order of π-conjugated molecules in organic electronic devices. Herein, we focus our attention on halogen bonding (XB) interactions and the crucial role of electron withdrawing substituents (e.g., nitro and fluoro) toward influencing solid-state properties via secondary interactions. Employing iodoethynyl benzene derivatives (F2BAI and (NO2)2BAI) and thiophene/furan-based building blocks equipped with pyridyl groups as self-assembling domains (PyrTF and PyrT2), co-crystals driven by XB, and π-stacking interactions were formed and studied. Spectroscopic and thermal analysis of 1:1 mixture …

Right-Hand Side Effect On The Convergence Of Integral Equation Based Systems, Qin S. Liu, Sheng Sun, Weng Cho Chew, Qi I. Dai, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study of the right-hand side effect for an iterative solver is presented. The right-hand side determines whether a mode can be excited under certain excitation. Based on the matrix equation system Ā · x = b, different formulations are discussed including the electric field integral equation (EFIE), Calderón preconditioned EFIE with electro-quasi-static problems, and the magnetic integral equation (MFIE) with magneto-quasi-static problems. Detailed spectral analysis shows the importance of the weighted right-hand side effect in both the convergence and accuracy of iterative system.

Quantifying Inter-Segmental Coordination During The Instep Soccer Kicks, Yumeng Li, Marion Alexander, Cheryl Glazebrook, Jeff Leiter

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 9(5): 646-656, 2016. In order to generate a high ball speed in soccer, the inter-segmental coordination of the kicking leg is critical. The purpose of this study was to quantify the coordination between the thigh and shank movement in the sagittal plane during instep kicks. Eleven female soccer players were video recorded using a high-speed (80 Hz) video camera during penalty kicks. Hip, knee and ankle joint centers of the right leg were digitized, and the movement was analyzed using Dartfish TeamPro (6.0). The thigh and shank segment angles were generated, and the coordination was …

Relationships Between Motor Coordination And Academic Achievement In Middle School Children, Daniel V. Chagas, Gustavo Leporace, Luiz Alberto Batista

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 9(5): 616-624, 2016. Although it is recognized that children with a marked impairment in the development of motor coordination may show difficulty in gaining academic achievement, research examining the relationship between gross motor coordination and academic achievement in children without intellectual disabilities is limited. This study aimed to examine whether gross motor coordination is associated with academic achievement among children. Middle school children (n=122) were recruited. Writing, reading, and mathematics performance were used to attribute academic achievement. Gross motor coordination was assessed using the Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder test. Pearson and partial correlations were used to …

Climate Change And The Integrity Of Science, Peter H. Gleick, James L. Van Etten, Members Of The U.S. National Academy Of Sciences

James Van Etten Publications

We are deeply disturbed by the recent escalation of political assaults on scientists in general and on climate scientists in particular. All citizens should understand some basic scientific facts. There is always some uncertainty associated with scientific conclusions; science never absolutely proves anything. When someone says that society should wait until scientists are absolutely certain before taking any action, it is the same as saying society should never take action. For a problem as potentially catastrophic as climate change, taking no action poses a dangerous risk for our planet.

Scientific conclusions derive from an understanding of basic laws supported by …

Robust Alternatives To Ancova For Estimating The Treatment Effect Via A Randomized Comparative Study, Fei Jiang, Lu Tian, Haoda Fu, Takahiro Hasegawa, Marc Alan Pfeffer, L. J. Wei Nov 2016

Robust Alternatives To Ancova For Estimating The Treatment Effect Via A Randomized Comparative Study, Fei Jiang, Lu Tian, Haoda Fu, Takahiro Hasegawa, Marc Alan Pfeffer, L. J. Wei

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In comparing two treatments via a randomized clinical trial, the analysis of covari- ance technique is often utilized to estimate an overall treatment effect. The ANCOVA is generally perceived as a more efficient procedure than its simple two sample estima- tion counterpart. Unfortunately when the ANCOVA model is not correctly specified, the resulting estimator is generally not consistent especially when the model is nonlin- ear. Recently various nonparametric alternatives, such as the augmentation methods, to ANCOVA have been proposed to estimate the treatment effect by adjusting the covariates. However, the properties of these alternatives have not been studied in the …

Scaling-Invariant Description Of Dependence Between Fuzzy Variables: Towards A Fuzzy Version Of Copulas, Gerardo Muela, Vladik Kreinovich, Christian Servin Nov 2016

Scaling-Invariant Description Of Dependence Between Fuzzy Variables: Towards A Fuzzy Version Of Copulas, Gerardo Muela, Vladik Kreinovich, Christian Servin

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To get a general description of dependence between n fuzzy variables x1, ..., xn, we can use the membership function μ(x1, ..., xn) that describes, for each possible tuple of values (x1, ..., xn) to which extent this tuple is possible.

There are, however, many ways to elicit these degrees. Different elicitations lead, in general, to different numerical values of these degrees -- although, ideally, tuples which have a higher degree of possibility in one scale should have a higher degree in other scales as well. It is …

Use Of Machine Learning To Analyze And -- Hopefully -- Predict Volcano Activity, Justin Parra, Olac Fuentes, Elizabeth Y. Anthony, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2016

Use Of Machine Learning To Analyze And -- Hopefully -- Predict Volcano Activity, Justin Parra, Olac Fuentes, Elizabeth Y. Anthony, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Volcanic eruptions cause significant loss of lives and property around the world each year. Their importance is highlighted by the sheer number of volcanoes for which eruptive activity is probable. These volcanoes are classified as in a state of unrest. The Global Volcano Project maintained by the Smithsonian Institution estimates that approximately 600 volcanoes, many proximal to major urban areas, are currently in this state of unrest. A spectrum of phenomena serve as precursors to eruption, including ground deformation, emission of gases, and seismic activity. The precursors are caused by magma upwelling from the Moho to the shallow (2-5 km) …

Long, Laura Watkins, Vincenzo Pota, Nicola Napolitano, Duncan Forbes, Jean Brodie, Caroline Foster

Faculty Publications

We construct a suite of discrete chemo-dynamical models of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5846. These models are a powerful tool to constrain both the mass distribution and internal dynamics of multiple tracer populations. We use Jeans models to simultaneously fit stellar kinematics within the effective radius Re, planetary nebula (PN) radial velocities out to 3 Re, and globular cluster (GC) radial velocities and colours out to 6 Re. The best-fitting model is a cored dark matter halo which contributes ∼10 per cent of the total mass within 1 Re, and 67 per cent ± 10 per cent within 6 …

Orbital Solutions And Absolute Elements Of The Massive Algol Binary Et Tauri, Richard M. Williamon, Horace Dale, Charles L. Evavold, Alexander Langoussis, Francis C. Fekel, Matthew W. Muterspaugh, Stephen Williams, Kate Napier, James R. Sowell

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We acquired differential UBV photoelectric photometry and radial velocities of the relatively bright, understudied, massive Algol binary ET Tau and utilized the Wilson-Devinney (WD) analysis program to obtain a simultaneous solution of these observations. To improve the orbital ephemeris, the V measurements from the ASAS program were also analyzed. Because of the very rapid rotation of the significantly more massive and hotter component (B2/3 spectral class), only radial velocities of the secondary component, which has a ∼B7 spectral class, could be measured. We derive masses of ${M}_{1}=14.34\pm 0.28\,{M}_{\odot }$ and ${M}_{2}=6.339\pm 0.117\,{M}_{\odot }$ and equal-volume radii of ${R}_{1}=6.356\pm 0.056\,{R}_{\odot }$ …

The measurement of the direction of WIMP-induced nuclear recoils is a compelling but technologically challenging strategy to provide an unambiguous signature of the detection of Galactic dark matter. Most directional detectors aim to reconstruct the dark-matter-induced nuclear recoil tracks, either in gas or solid targets. The main challenge with directional detection is the need for high spatial resolution over large volumes, which puts strong requirements on the readout technologies. In this paper we review the various detector readout technologies used by directional detectors. In particular, we summarize the challenges, advantages and drawbacks of each approach, and discuss future prospects for …
