A Sampling Kaczmarz-Motzkin Algorithm For Linear Feasibility, Jesus A. De Loera, Jamie Haddock, Deanna Needell Nov 2016

A Sampling Kaczmarz-Motzkin Algorithm For Linear Feasibility, Jesus A. De Loera, Jamie Haddock, Deanna Needell

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

We combine two iterative algorithms for solving large-scale systems of linear inequalities, the relaxation method of Agmon, Motzkin et al. and the randomized Kaczmarz method. We obtain a family of algorithms that generalize and extend both projection-based techniques. We prove several convergence results, and our computational experiments show our algorithms often outperform the original methods.

Giant Electrorheological Fluids With Ultrahigh Electrorheological Efficiency Based On A Micro/Nano Hybrid Calcium Titanyl Oxalate Composite, Jinghua Wu, Zhenyang Song, Fenghua Liu, Jianjun Guo, Yuchuan Cheng, Shengqian Ma, Gaojie Xu Nov 2016

Giant Electrorheological Fluids With Ultrahigh Electrorheological Efficiency Based On A Micro/Nano Hybrid Calcium Titanyl Oxalate Composite, Jinghua Wu, Zhenyang Song, Fenghua Liu, Jianjun Guo, Yuchuan Cheng, Shengqian Ma, Gaojie Xu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A novel micro/nanoparticle hybrid calcium titanyl oxalate electrorheological (ER) material composed of micron-sized spindly particles and nanometer-sized irregular particles was successfully fabricated. The giant ER fluid based on the composite exhibits enhanced not only yield stress but also low field-off viscosity, thereby resulting in an ultrahigh ER efficiency that greatly exceeds that of any existing giant ER (GER) material. The synergistic effect between the spindly microparticles and irregular nanoparticles discovered in this study suggests a promising method for solving the long-standing ER efficiency problems. Moreover, the one-step synthesis approach presented in this work can be readily expanded for mass production …

Behavioral Modeling And Fpga Synthesis Of Ieee 802.11n Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (Ofdm) Scheme, Ragahv Sharma

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the field of communications, a high data rate and low multi-path fading is required for efficient information exchange. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a widely accepted IEEE 802.11n (and many others) standard for usage in communication systems operating in fading dispersive channels. In this thesis, we modeled the OFDM algorithm at the behavioral level in VHDL/Verilog that was successfully synthesized/verified on an FPGA. Due to rapid technology scaling, FPGAs have become popular and are low-cost and high performance alternatives to (semi-) custom ASICs. Further, due to reprogramming flexibility, FPGAs are useful in rapid prototyping. As per the IEEE …

We report the first measurement of the flux-averaged cross section for charged current coherent π+ production on carbon for neutrino energies less than 1.5 GeV, and with a restriction on the final state phase space volume in the T2K near detector, ND280. Comparisons are made with predictions from the Rein-Sehgal coherent production model and the model by Alvarez-Ruso et al., the latter representing the first implementation of an instance of the new class of microscopic coherent models in a neutrino interaction Monte Carlo event generator. We observe a clear event excess above background, disagreeing with the null results reported by …

Sign-Problem-Free Monte Carlo Simulation Of Certain Frustrated Quantum Magnets, Fabien Alet, Kedar Damle, Sumiran Pujari

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We introduce a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method for efficient sign-problem-free simulations of a broad class of frustrated S =1/2 antiferromagnets using the basis of spin eigenstates of clusters to avoid the severe sign problem faced by other QMC methods. We demonstrate the utility of the method in several cases with competing exchange interactions and flag important limitations as well as possible extensions of the method.

Physics Faculty Publications

UVO 0825+15 is a hot bright helium-rich subdwarf which lies in K2 Field 5 and in a sample of intermediate helium-rich subdwarfs observed the Subaru High Dispersion Spectrograph. The K2 light curve shows low-amplitude variations, whilst the Subaru spectrum shows Pb IV absorption lines, indicative of a very high lead overabundance. UVO 0825+15 also has a high proper motion with kinematics typical for a thick disc star. Analyses of ultraviolet and intermediate dispersion optical spectra rule out a short-period binary companion and provide fundamental atmospheric parameters of Teff=38 900±270 K, logg/cms−2=5.97±0.11, log nHe/nH = −0.57 ± …

Fermentation-Assisted Extraction Of Isothiocyanates From Brassica Vegetable Using Box-Behnken Experimental Design, Amit Jaiswal, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam

Articles

Recent studies showed that Brassica vegetables are rich in numerous health-promoting compounds such as carotenoids, polyphenols, flavonoids, and glucosinolates (GLS), as well as isothiocyanates (ITCs) and are involved in health promotion upon consumption. ITCs are breakdown products of GLS, and typically used in the food industry as a food preservative and colouring agent. They are also used in the pharmaceutical industry due to their several pharmacological properties such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoal, anti-inflammatory, and chemoprotective effects, etc. Due to their widespread application in food and pharmaceuticals, the present study was designed to extract ITCs from York cabbage. In order to …

Development Of A Forecast Process For Meteotsunami Events In The Gulf Of Mexico, Leilani D. Paxton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to provide a better understanding of meteotsunamis over the eastern Gulf of Mexico along the west coast of Florida and to develop a process for forecasting those events. Meteotsunami waves develop from resonant effects of strong pressure perturbations greater than 1 hPa, moving in excess of 10 m s-1, over water areas up to around 100 m in depth. Meteotsunami events over 0.3 m in height, as measured by three primary NOAA coastal tide gauges at Cedar Key, Clearwater Beach, and Naples, from 2007-2015, impact the Florida Gulf coastline several times per …

Non-Science Major Undergraduate Students’ High School Science Experiences: An Exploratory Case Study, Feng Li, Xuan Jiang

The Qualitative Report

Previous studies reported relatively low correlation coefficients between students’ high school science experiences and their science identities. This needs more exploratory studies to investigate the reasons for these low correlation coefficients. This article presents the high school science experiences of three non-science major undergraduate students and the influence from their experiences, in their perspective, on their choice of a non-science major in college. Three female Hispanic non-science major undergraduate students were interviewed about their high school science experiences. Data were analyzed to answer the research question: From three female Hispanic students’ perspectives, what are some factors from high school science …

Abrupt Ocean Anoxia During The Late Ordovician Mass Extinction Detected Using Uranium Isotopes Of Marine Carbonates, Rickey Bartlett, Maya Elrick, Yemane Asmerom, Viorel Atudorei

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Ordovician witnessed an explosion in marine biodiversity punctuated by the first of the ‘big-5’ Phanerozoic mass extinctions, the Late Ordovician mass extinction (LOME). The LOME consists of two discrete pulses occurring at the beginning and end of the Hirnantian. Lithologic and geochemical evidence suggests widespread marine anoxia triggered the second LOME pulse; however, most of these redox proxies record local bottom water or porewater conditions rather than global seawater conditions. To evaluate global redox trends, we utilize uranium (U) isotopes and trace element geochemistry of marine carbonates as a global marine redox proxy.

Bulk carbonate samples were collected from …

A Multiple Perspective Modeling And Simulation Approach For Renewable Energy Policy Evaluation, Talal M. Alyamani Nov 2016

A Multiple Perspective Modeling And Simulation Approach For Renewable Energy Policy Evaluation, Talal M. Alyamani

Open Access Dissertations

Environmental issues and reliance on fossil fuel sources, including coal, oil, and natural gas, are the two most common energy issues that are currently faced by the United States (U.S.). Incorporation of renewable energy sources, a non-economical option in electricity generation compared to conventional sources that burn fossil fuels, single-handedly promises a viable solution for both of these issues. Several energy policies have concordantly been suggested to reduce the financial burden of adopting renewable energy technologies and make such technologies competitive with conventional sources throughout the U.S. This study presents a modeling and analysis approach for comprehensive evaluation of renewable …

Using "Choice" To Measure The Availability And Use Of E-Books, Amanda L. Scott, Rickey D. Best Nov 2016

Using "Choice" To Measure The Availability And Use Of E-Books, Amanda L. Scott, Rickey D. Best

The Southeastern Librarian

As e-books have come to hold a major impact on library collection building activities, the influence of reviews of titles and the on-going conversion of titles to a digital format have significant potential impacts for libraries. Reviewing tools such as Choice and the lag-time between publication notice of the print edition of a work and its corresponding e-version asks the questions, “How many of the print titles that are reviewed in Choice have a corresponding e-version ready for purchase?” and “How used are those e-versions in comparison with print?”

Marsilio Ficino's Music Theory, Eoin A. Trimble

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper explores the musical theory of Marsilio Ficino, a 15th century Italian philosopher. Examining his own work and those works which inspired him this paper attempts to explain his theory and understand its place in the world today. Looking at modern examples of the Renaissance philosopher's ideas shows that he may not have been too far from discovering the truth.
