The Effects of Charities on Rural Economic Development: An Analysis of the Outcomes of Charity Involvement and the Reduction of Local Economic Growth

Joshua Drouin Dr. David Eaton

This research examines the impact of charities and NGOs on economic development in areas served by the charitable groups. We will look at both long term NGO and charitable involvement, as well as disaster related efforts. By drawing on the comparisons we can empirically test the Samaritan’s Dilemma put forth by James Buchannan. This hypothesis suggests that while charity actions can help in the short term, they can lead to long term …

Vibrationally Resolved Lifetimes Of The 21Σ+U State Of Na2, Seth Ashman, Roy Anunciado, Lutz Hüwel Nov 2016

Vibrationally Resolved Lifetimes Of The 21Σ+U State Of Na2, Seth Ashman, Roy Anunciado, Lutz Hüwel

Engineering & Physics Faculty Publications

Lifetimes of partially resolved ro-vibrational levels of the Na2 21Σu + double well state have been measured for the first time. Ground state sodium dimer molecules in a molecular beam are resonantly excited by the doubled output of a 10 ns pulsed dye laser in the range 333–357 nm. After being allowed to decay for a predetermined time interval, the surviving excited molecules are ionized by 532 nm photons from a delayed Nd:YAG laser and detected in a linear time-of flight mass spectrometer. By appropriate tuning of the excitation laser and systematic variation of the probe laser delay, lifetimes are …

Automated Calibration Of Atmospheric Oxidized Mercury Measurements, Seth Lyman, Colleen Jones, Trevor O'Neil, Tanner Allen, Matthieu Miller, Mae Sexauer Gustin, Ashley M. Pierce, Winston Luke, Xinrong Ren, Paul Kelley

USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications

The atmosphere is an important reservoir for mercury pollution, and understanding of oxidation processes is essential to elucidating the fate of atmospheric mercury. Several recent studies have shown that a low bias exists in a widely applied method for atmospheric oxidized mercury measurements. We developed an automated, permeation tube-based calibrator for elemental and oxidized mercury, and we integrated this calibrator with atmospheric mercury instrumentation (Tekran 2537/1130/1135 speciation systems) in Reno, Nevada and at Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii, U.S.A. While the calibrator has limitations, it was able to routinely inject stable amounts of HgCl2 and HgBr2 into atmospheric mercury measurement systems …

A Measurement System For Science And Engineering Research Center Performance Evaluation, Elizabeth Carole Gibson Nov 2016

A Measurement System For Science And Engineering Research Center Performance Evaluation, Elizabeth Carole Gibson

Dissertations and Theses

This research provides performance metrics for cooperative research centers that enhance translational research formed by the partnership of government, industry and academia. Centers are part of complex ecosystems that vary greatly in the type of science conducted, organizational structures and expected outcomes. The ability to realize their objectives depends on transparent measurement systems to assist in decision making in research translation.

A generalizable, hierarchical decision model that uses both quantitative and qualitative metrics is developed based upon program goals. Mission-oriented metrics are used to compare the effectiveness of the cooperative research centers through case studies.

Image Stitching: Handling Parallax, Stereopsis, And Video, Fan Zhang Nov 2016

Image Stitching: Handling Parallax, Stereopsis, And Video, Fan Zhang

Dissertations and Theses

Panorama stitching increases the field of view in an image by assembling multiple views together. Traditional stitching techniques are proven to be effective only when dealing with parallax-free monocular images. Many challenges that remain unsolved in the stitching research area include how to stitch monocular images with large parallax, how to stitch stereoscopic images to maintain their stereoscopic consistency and original disparity distribution, and how to create panoramic videos with temporally coherent content. To provide more powerful stitching techniques with more universality, we first develop a parallax-tolerant image stitching technique. With the help of it, we then effectively extend the …

Simulation Of Value Stream Mapping And Discrete Optimization Of Energy Consumption In Modular Construction, Md Mukul Chowdhury Nov 2016

Simulation Of Value Stream Mapping And Discrete Optimization Of Energy Consumption In Modular Construction, Md Mukul Chowdhury

Theses and Dissertations

With the increased practice of modularization and prefabrication, the construction industry gained the benefits of quality management, improved completion time, reduced site disruption and vehicular traffic, and improved overall safety and security. Whereas industrialized construction methods, such as modular and manufactured buildings, have evolved over decades, core techniques used in prefabrication plants vary only slightly from those employed in traditional site-built construction. With a focus on energy and cost efficient modular construction, this research presents the development of a simulation, measurement and optimization system for energy consumption in the manufacturing process of modular construction. The system is based on Lean …

Size And Site Dependence Of The Catalytic Activity Of Iridium Clusters Towards Ethane Dehydrogenation, Yingbin Ge, Hao Jiang, Russell Kato, Prasuna Gummagatta Nov 2016

Size And Site Dependence Of The Catalytic Activity Of Iridium Clusters Towards Ethane Dehydrogenation, Yingbin Ge, Hao Jiang, Russell Kato, Prasuna Gummagatta

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

This research focuses on optimizing transition metal nanocatalyst immobilization and activity to enhance ethane dehydrogenation. Ethane dehydrogenation, catalyzed by thermally stable Irn (n = 8, 12, 18) atomic clusters that exhibit a cuboid structure, was studied using the B3LYP method with triple-ζ basis sets. Relativistic effects and dispersion corrections were included in the calculations. In the dehydrogenation reaction Irn + C2H6 → H−Irn−C2H5 → (H)2−Irn−C2H4, the first H-elimination is the rate-limiting step, primarily because the reaction releases sufficient heat to facilitate …

Muscle Memory And The Local Concentration Of Capital Punishment, Lee Kovarsky Nov 2016

Muscle Memory And The Local Concentration Of Capital Punishment, Lee Kovarsky

Duke Law Journal

The modern death penalty is not just concentrating in a handful of practicing states; it is disappearing in all but a few capitally active localities. Capital-punishment concentration, however, still surfaces more as the subject of casual observation than as the object of sophisticated academic inquiry. Normative and doctrinal analyses of the phenomenon are virtually nonexistent, in part because the current ability to measure and report concentration is so limited.

This Article is the first attempt to measure capital-punishment concentration rigorously, by combining different sources of county-level data and by borrowing quantitative tools that economists use to study market competition. The …

Experimental And Computational Study On Fracture Mechanics Of Multilayered Structures, Hai Thanh Tran Nov 2016

Experimental And Computational Study On Fracture Mechanics Of Multilayered Structures, Hai Thanh Tran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many devices in electronics are in the form of multilayered structures. These structures can fail catastrophically if they contain defects or cracks. Enhancing their fracture properties is therefore critical to improve the reliability of the systems. The interface-dominated fracture mechanics of multilayered structure was studied using experiments and finite element (FE) modeling by considering two examples: thin films on polymer substrates in flexible electronics and Cu leadframe/epoxy molding compound (EMC) in micro-electronics packaging.

In the first example, aluminum-manganese (Al-Mn) thin films with Mn concentration up to 20.5 at.% were deposited on polyimide (PI) substrates. A variety of phases, including supersaturated …

Adsorptive And Kinetic Characterization Of Aqueous Zinc Removal By Biochars, Sergio Mireles, Yongsik Ok, Chu-Lin Cheng, James Jihoon Kang Nov 2016

Adsorptive And Kinetic Characterization Of Aqueous Zinc Removal By Biochars, Sergio Mireles, Yongsik Ok, Chu-Lin Cheng, James Jihoon Kang

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Biochars have shown a great potential to treat stormwater runoff contaminated with heavy metals due to their favorable physical and chemical characteristics. Biochar materials were produced from pyrolysis of oak tree and wood at 400C and 450C respectively, and their Zn adsorption behavior from aqueous solutions were evaluated to assess their applicability as a filter media for stormwater treatment. Two adsorption isotherm models, Freundlich and Langmuir, were used to fit the batch-scale experimental data. The kinetics of Zn adsorption was investigated under two contrasting physical condition (stagnant vs. agitated). The adsorption isotherm was better fitted with the Langmuir model (R2 …

A Note On The Values Of Independence Polynomials At -1, Jonathan Cutler, Nathan Kahl Nov 2016

A Note On The Values Of Independence Polynomials At -1, Jonathan Cutler, Nathan Kahl

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The independence polynomial I(G;x) of a graph G is I(G;x)=∑k=0 α(G)skxk, where sk is the number of independent sets in G of size k. The decycling number of a graph G, denoted φ(G), is the minimum size of a set SV(G) such that G-S is acyclic. Engström proved that the independence polynomial satisfies |I(G;-1)|≤2φ(G) for any graph G, and this bound is best possible. Levit and Mandrescu provided an elementary proof of the bound, and in addition conjectured that for every positive integer k and integer q with |q|≤2k, there is a connected graph G with φ(G)=k and I(G;-1)=q. In …

Generalized Least-Powers Regressions I: Bivariate Regressions, Nataniel Greene Nov 2016

Generalized Least-Powers Regressions I: Bivariate Regressions, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

The bivariate theory of generalized least-squares is extended here to least-powers. The bivariate generalized least-powers problem of order p seeks a line which minimizes the average generalized mean of the absolute pth power deviations between the data and the line. Least-squares regressions utilize second order moments of the data to construct the regression line whereas least-powers regressions use moments of order p to construct the line. The focus is on even values of p, since this case admits analytic solution methods for the regression coefficients. A numerical example shows generalized least-powers methods performing comparably to generalized least-squares methods, …

P-26 Detection Of Counterfeit Antimalarial Drugs By Sers, Getahun Merga, P. Shepard, M. Trujillo, J. Camden

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

Substandard antimalarial drugs are a major problem to the health of citizens in developing countries, and it is likely that the problem persists due to the lack of means to detect substandard drugs. Various colorimetric techniques have been implemented to determine if a drug contains the stated active ingredient or not, but vibrational spectroscopies such as NIR and Raman can be used to more reliably quantify the amount of active ingredient. The use of Raman, however, has been limited by the presence of significant sample fluorescence that interferes with detection of the SERS signals of the active ingredients. Thus, we …
