Crack Path And Fracture Analysis In Fsw Of Small Diameter 6082-T6 Aluminium Tubes Under Tension-Torsion Loading, E Maggiolini, R Tovo, L Susmel, Mn James, Dg Hattingh

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper reports part of the work done in a research project aimed at developing an optimised process to join 38 mm diameter tubes of 6082-T6 aluminium alloy using friction stir welding (FSW), and then to determine the fatigue performance under tension, torsion and tension–torsion loading conditions. The final outcome of the project is intended to be guidance for fatigue design of small diameter aluminium tubes joined by FSW, and this paper presents information on crack path and defects under the various loading conditions. Crack path analysis was performed using both low magnification stereo microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, in …

A Parallel Evolutionary Approach To Solving Systems Of Equations In Polycyclic Groups, Matthew J. Craven, Daniel Robertz Jan 2016

A Parallel Evolutionary Approach To Solving Systems Of Equations In Polycyclic Groups, Matthew J. Craven, Daniel Robertz

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

AbstractThe Anshel–Anshel–Goldfeld (AAG) key exchange protocol is based upon the multiple conjugacy problem for a finitely-presented group. The hardness in breaking this protocol relies on the supposed difficulty in solving the corresponding equations for the conjugating element in the group. Two such protocols based on polycyclic groups as a platform were recently proposed and were shown to be resistant to length-based attack. In this article we propose a parallel evolutionary approach which runs on multicore high-performance architectures. The approach is shown to be more efficient than previous attempts to break these protocols, and also more successful. Comprehensive data of experiments …

Semiautomatic Friction Stir Welding Of 38 Mm Od 6082-T6 Aluminium Tubes, Dg Hattingh, Welligh Lg Von, D Bernard, L Susmel, R Tovo, Mn James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper describes the development of a semi-automated friction stir welding (FSW) technique for joining 38 mm nominal outer diameter (OD) tubes of 6082-T6 aluminium alloy with 3.5 mm nominal wall thickness. The technique incorporates a retracting tool in order to avoid leaving a substantial hole in the joint line after extracting the tool at the end of the welding process. This is one of very first applications of FSW to small diameter tubular geometries to be reported in the open literature and the technique is capable of producing small-scale production runs (circa 100) of welded tube specimens with consistent …

Lagrangian Constraints And Differential Thomas Decomposition, Vp Gerdt, D Robertz Jan 2016

Lagrangian Constraints And Differential Thomas Decomposition, Vp Gerdt, D Robertz

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper we show how to compute algorithmically the full set of algebraically independent constraints for singular mechanical and field-theoretical models with polynomial Lagrangians. If a model under consideration is not singular as a whole but has domains of dynamical (field) variables where its Lagrangian becomes singular, then our approach allows to detect such domains and compute the relevant constraints. In doing so, we assume that the Lagrangian of a model is a differential polynomial and apply the differential Thomas decomposition algorithm to the Euler-Lagrange equations.

Verifying Inevitability Of Oscillation In Ring Oscillators Using The Deductive Sos-Qe Approach, Hafiz Ul Asad, Kevin D. Jones Jan 2016

Verifying Inevitability Of Oscillation In Ring Oscillators Using The Deductive Sos-Qe Approach, Hafiz Ul Asad, Kevin D. Jones

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

A study presents a deductive approach to verify the AGI of oscillations in an ring oscillator (RO). The study is inspired by the Lyapunov theory of stability for dynamical systems and uses a certificate-based deductive approach to verify the inevitability of oscillations in ROs. It defines the verification task as a conjunction of several subproperties whose verification is delegated to the existence of several Lyapunov-like certificates.

From Characterising Three Years Of Hri To Methodology And Reporting Recommendations, P Baxter, J Kennedy, E Senft, S Lemaignan, T Belpaeme

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) research requires the integration and cooperation of multiple disciplines, technical and social, in order to make progress. In many cases using different motivations, each of these disciplines bring with them different assumptions and methodologies. We assess recent trends in the field of HRI by examining publications in the HRI conference over the past three years (over 100 full papers), and characterise them according to 14 categories. We focus primarily on aspects of methodology. From this, a series of practical recommendations based on rigorous guidelines from other research fields that have not yet become common practice in HRI …

What’S On The Inside Counts: A Grounded Account Of Concept Acquisition And Development, S Thill, K Twomey Jan 2016

What’S On The Inside Counts: A Grounded Account Of Concept Acquisition And Development, S Thill, K Twomey

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Understanding the factors which affect the age of acquisition (AoA) of words and concepts is fundamental to understanding cognitive development more broadly. Traditionally, studies of AoA have taken two approaches, either exploring the effect of linguistic variables such as input frequency (e.g., Naigles and Hoff-Ginsberg, 1998) or the semantics of the underlying concept, such as concreteness or imageability (e.g., Bird et al., 2001). Embodied theories of cognition, meanwhile, assume that concepts, even relatively abstract ones, can be grounded in the embodied experience. While the focus of such discussions has been mainly on grounding in external modalities, more recently some have …

Identification Of Blood Biomarkers For Use In Point Of Care Diagnosis Tool For Alzheimer's Disease, E. Jammeh, P. Zhao, C. Carroll, S. Pearson, E. Ifeachor

Peninsula Medical School

Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is widely regarded as necessary to allow treatment to be started before irreversible damage to the brain occur and for patients to benefit from new therapies as they become available. Low-cost point-of-care (PoC) diagnostic tools that can be used to routinely diagnose AD in its early stage would facilitate this, but such tools require reliable and accurate biomarkers. However, traditional biomarkers for AD use invasive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and/or expensive neuroimaging techniques together with neuropsychological assessments. Blood-based PoC diagnostics tools may provide a more cost and time efficient way to assess AD to …

Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning As Creative Problem Solving, Tr Colin, T Belpaeme, A Cangelosi, N Hemion Jan 2016

Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning As Creative Problem Solving, Tr Colin, T Belpaeme, A Cangelosi, N Hemion

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Although creativity is studied from philosophy to cognitive robotics, a definition has proven elusive. We argue for emphasizing the creative process (the cognition of the creative agent), rather than the creative product (the artifact or behavior). Owing to developments in experimental psychology, the process approach has become an increasingly attractive way of characterizing creative problem solving. In particular, the phenomenon of insight, in which an individual arrives at a solution through a sudden change in perspective, is a crucial component of the process of creativity. These developments resonate with advances in machine learning, in particular hierarchical and modular approaches, as …

Quantitative Measurement Of Displacement In Photopolymer Layers During Holographic Recording Using Phase Shifting Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry, Mohesh Moothanchery, Viswanath Bavigadda, Paul Kumar Upputturi, Manojit Pramanik, Vincent Toal, Izabela Naydenova

Conference Papers

The aim of this study is to determine the displacement profile due to shrinkage in acrylamide-based photopolymer layer during holographic recording. Using phase shifting electronic speckle pattern interferometry the displacement at each pixel in the image of the object is measured by phase shifting technique so that a complete displacement profile of the object can be obtained. It was observed that the displacement profile is Gaussian and resembles to the profile of the recording beam. We observed an increase in shrinkage from 2 μm at 20 seconds of recording to 7.5 μm after 120 seconds of recording. The technique allows …

Theory Of The Synchronous Motion Of An Array Of Floating Flap Gates Oscillating Wave Surge Converter, Simone Michele, Paolo Sammarco, M D’Errico Jan 2016

Theory Of The Synchronous Motion Of An Array Of Floating Flap Gates Oscillating Wave Surge Converter, Simone Michele, Paolo Sammarco, M D’Errico

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We consider a finite array of floating flap gates oscillating wave surge converter (OWSC) in water of constant depth. The diffraction and radiation potentials are solved in terms of elliptical coordinates and Mathieu functions. Generated power and capture width ratio of a single gate excited by incoming waves are given in terms of the radiated wave amplitude in the far field. Similar to the case of axially symmetric absorbers, the maximum power extracted is shown to be directly proportional to the incident wave characteristics: energy flux, angle of incidence and wavelength. Accordingly, the capture width ratio is directly proportional to …

Identifying And Supporting Numeracy Needs Of First Year Undergraduate Education Students, Fiona Budgen, John West Jan 2016

Identifying And Supporting Numeracy Needs Of First Year Undergraduate Education Students, Fiona Budgen, John West

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Currently Australian pre-service teachers’ levels of personal numeracy are under a great deal of scrutiny. There are calls for universities to raise entry standards into teaching degrees and counter-calls that the output of universities should be gauged rather than inputs. In 2015, doubts about the ability of graduate teachers to convey the desired skills, knowledge and attitudes in mathematics led the Australian Government to mandate the introduction of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students. From 2017, all pre-service teachers in Australia will be required to pass prior to graduation. The present research sought to identify specific …

Biomimetic Manipulator Control Design For Bimanual Tasks In The Natural Environment, Alex Smith Jan 2016

Biomimetic Manipulator Control Design For Bimanual Tasks In The Natural Environment, Alex Smith

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

As robots become more prolific in the human environment, it is important that safe operational procedures are introduced at the same time; typical robot control methods are often very stiff to maintain good positional tracking, but this makes contact (purposeful or accidental) with the robot dangerous. In addition, if robots are to work cooperatively with humans, natural interaction between agents will make tasks easier to perform with less effort and learning time. Stability of the robot is particularly important in this situation, especially as outside forces are likely to affect the manipulator when in a close working environment; for example, …

Mental Imagery In Humanoid Robots, Kristsana Seepanomwan Jan 2016

Mental Imagery In Humanoid Robots, Kristsana Seepanomwan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Mental imagery presents humans with the opportunity to predict prospective happenings based on own intended actions, to reminisce occurrences from the past and reproduce the perceptual experience. This cognitive capability is mandatory for human survival in this folding and changing world. By means of internal representation, mental imagery offers other cognitive functions (e.g., decision making, planning) the possibility to assess information on objects or events that are not being perceived. Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that humans are able to employ this ability in the early stages of infancy. Although materialisation of humanoid robot employment in the future appears …
