Robust Multi-Criteria Optimal Fuzzy Control Of Discrete-Time Nonlinear Systems, Xin Wang, Edwin E. Yaz Jan 2016

Robust Multi-Criteria Optimal Fuzzy Control Of Discrete-Time Nonlinear Systems, Xin Wang, Edwin E. Yaz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper presents a novel fuzzy control design of discrete-time nonlinear systems with multiple performance criteria. The purpose behind this work is to improve the traditional fuzzy controller performance to satisfy several performance criteria simultaneously to secure quadratic optimality with an inherent stability property together with a dissipativity type of disturbance reduction. The Takagi–Sugeno-type fuzzy model is used in our control system design. By solving a linear matrix inequality at each time step, the optimal control solution can be found to satisfy mixed performance criteria. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is demonstrated by simulation of the control of the …

Background. An epidemiological association between exposure to phthalates and type 2 diabetes (T2D) is known. However, the potential role of environmental phthalates in the complications of T2D is unknown. Methods. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2010, we studied the association of 12 urinary phthalate metabolites with self-reported eye affliction/retinopathy in 1,004 participants with diabetes. Data from retinal imaging was used to validate this outcome. Independence of the phthalates→T2D association was studied by adjusting for age, sex, race, marital status, educational attainment, poverty income ratio, physical activity, glycated hemoglobin levels, total serum cholesterol, serum high-density …

An Application Of The Spectral Theorem To The Laplacian On A Riemannian Manifold, Paul Bracken Jan 2016

An Application Of The Spectral Theorem To The Laplacian On A Riemannian Manifold, Paul Bracken

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

There continues to be great interest in the study of the heat equation on Riemannian manifolds. This may be due to the remarkable more recent work of Patodi [1]. It may also be due in part to the asymptotic expansion of Minakshisundaram and Pleijel. The heat equation involves a parabolic partial differential equation that describes the distribution of heat in a given region over time. This equation has also appears in probability theory to describe random walks. The heat equation is also of importance in Riemannian geometry, topology and applied mathematics.

Asymptotic And Optimal Liouville Properties For Wolff Type Integral Systems, John Villavert Jan 2016

Asymptotic And Optimal Liouville Properties For Wolff Type Integral Systems, John Villavert

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This article examines the properties of positive solutions to fully nonlinear systems of integral equations involving Hardy and Wolff potentials. The first part of the paper establishes an optimal existence result and a Liouville type theorem for the integral systems. Then, the second part examines the decay rates of positive bound states at infinity. In particular, a complete characterization of the asymptotic properties of bounded and decaying solutions is given by showing that such solutions vanish at infinity with two principle rates: the slow decay rates and the fast decay rates. In fact, the two rates can be fully distinguished …

Stability Analysis And Hopf Bifurcation Of Density-Dependent Predator-Prey Systems With Beddington-Deangelis Functional Response, Xin Jiang, Zhikun She, Zhaosheng Feng

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this article, we study a density-dependent predator-prey system with the Beddington-DeAngelis functional response for stability and Hopf bifurcation under certain parametric conditions. We start with the condition of the existence of the unique positive equilibrium, and provide two sufficient conditions for its local stability by the Lyapunov function method and the Routh-Hurwitz criterion, respectively. Then, we establish sufficient conditions for the global stability of the positive equilibrium by proving the non-existence of closed orbits in the first quadrant R²+. Afterwards, we analyze the Hopf bifurcation geometrically by exploring the monotonic property of the trace of the Jacobean matrix with …

The Effect Of Ignoring Statistical Interactions In Regression Analyses Conducted In Epidemiologic Studies: An Example With Survival Analysis Using Cox Proportional Hazards Regression Model, Kristina Vatcheva, Joseph B. Mccormick, Mohammad H. Rahbar

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Objective: To demonstrate the adverse impact of ignoring statistical interactions in regression models used in epidemiologic studies.

Study design and setting: Based on different scenarios that involved known values for coefficient of the interaction term in Cox regression models we generated 1000 samples of size 600 each. The simulated samples and a real life data set from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort were used to evaluate the effect of ignoring statistical interactions in these models.

Results: Compared to correctly specified Cox regression models with interaction terms, misspecified models without interaction terms resulted in up to 8.95 fold bias in estimated …

The Complete Classification Of Five-Dimensional Dirichlet–Voronoi Polyhedra Of Translational Lattices, Mathieu Dutour Sikiric, Alexey Garber, Achill Schürmann, Clara Waldmann

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper reports on the full classification of Dirichlet–Voronoi polyhedra and Delaunay subdivisions of five-dimensional translational lattices. A complete list is obtained of 110 244 affine types (L-types) of Delaunay subdivisions and it turns out that they are all combinatorially inequivalent, giving the same number of combinatorial types of Dirichlet–Voronoi polyhedra. Using a refinement of corresponding secondary cones, 181 394 contraction types are obtained. The paper gives details of the computer-assisted enumeration, which was verified by three independent implementations and a topological mass formula check.

This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and risk factors for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Mexican Americans living in South Texas. We tested plasma for the presence of HCV antibody from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort (CCHC), a randomized, population-based cohort in an economically disadvantaged Mexican American community on the United States/Mexico border with high rates of chronic disease. A weighted prevalence of HCV antibody of 2·3% [n = 1131, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·2-3·4] was found. Participants with diabetes had low rates of HCV antibody (0·4%, 95% CI 0·0-0·9) and logistic regression revealed a statistically significant negative …

A Polyhedral Model Of Partitions With Bounded Differences And A Bijective Proof Of A Theorem Of Andrews, Beck, And Robbins, Felix Breuer, Brandt Kronholm Jan 2016

A Polyhedral Model Of Partitions With Bounded Differences And A Bijective Proof Of A Theorem Of Andrews, Beck, And Robbins, Felix Breuer, Brandt Kronholm

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The smallest part is a rational function. This result is similar to the closely related case of partitions with fixed differences between largest and smallest parts which has recently been studied through analytic methods by Andrews, Beck, and Robbins. Our approach is geometric: We model partitions with bounded differences as lattice points in an infinite union of polyhedral cones. Surprisingly, this infinite union tiles a single simplicial cone. This construction then leads to a bijection that can be interpreted on a purely combinatorial level.

The Quantitative-Mfg Test: A Linear Mixed Effect Model To Detect Maternal-Offspring Gene Interactions, Michelle M. Clark, John Blangero, Thomas D. Dyer, Eric M. Sobel, Janet S. Sinsheimer

School of Medicine Publications

Maternal-offspring gene interactions, aka maternal-fetal genotype (MFG) incompatibilities, are neglected in complex diseases and quantitative trait studies. They are implicated in birth to adult onset diseases but there are limited ways to investigate their influence on quantitative traits. We present the Quantitative-MFG (QMFG) test, a linear mixed model where maternal and offspring genotypes are fixed effects and residual correlations between family members are random effects. The QMFG handles families of any size, common or general scenarios of MFG incompatibility, and additional covariates. We develop likelihood ratio tests (LRTs) and rapid score tests and show they provide correct inference. In addition, …

Developing Equations For Estimating Reference Evapotranspiration In Australia, Matin Ahooghalandari, Mehdi Khiadani, Mina Esmi Jahromi

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Quantifying reference evapotranspiration (ET0) is essential in water resources management. Although, many methods have been developed with different level of accuracy, in this study, two new equations were developed and optimized for estimating ET0 using Honey-Bee Mating Optimization (HBMO) algorithm. The firs eq. estimates ET0 from extraterrestrial radiation (Ra), relative humidity (RH) and mean daily temperature (Tmean), while the second uses the same parameters except that mean daily temperatures is replaced with maximum daily air temperature (Tmax). Both equations were developed using climatic data from eight weather stations in Western …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

As a result of climate change warmer temperatures are projected through the 21st century and are already increasing above modelled predictions. Apart from increases in the mean, warm/hot temperature extremes are expected to become more prevalent in the future, along with an increase in the frequency of droughts. It is crucial to better understand the response of terrestrial ecosystems to such temperature extremes for predicting land-surface feedbacks in a changing climate. While land-surface feedbacks in drought conditions and during heat waves have been reported from Europe and the US, direct observations of the impact of such extremes on the carbon …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

In the aftermath of the 2011 accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (F1 hereafter), municipal solid waste (MSW) contaminated with radioactive cesium (rad-Cs hereafter) has been generated in 12 prefectures in Japan. The Japanese Minister of Environment classified MSW that contained rad-Cs in the concentration more than 8,000 Bq/kg as “designated (solid) waste (DSW hereafter), and prescribed the collection, storage and transportation procedures. When MSW containing rad-Cs was incinerated, rad-Cs was concentrated in fly ash, and the ash often fell into the category of DSW. We have investigated a technique that can reduce the volume of the rad-Cs-contaminated fly-ash …

Optimising Application Performance With Qos Support In Ad Hoc Networks, Jims Marchang

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The popularity of wireless communication has increased substantially over the last decade, due to mobility support, flexibility and ease of deployment. Among next generation of mobile communication technologies, Ad Hoc networking plays an important role, since it can stand alone as private network, become a part of public network, either for general use or as part of disaster management scenarios. The performance of multihop Ad Hoc networks is heavily affected by interference, mobility, limited shared bandwidth, battery life, error rate of wireless media, and the presence of hidden and exposed terminals. The scheduler and the Medium Access Control (MAC) play …

This project first investigated the production of graphene using three different methods, namely mechanical exfoliation, physical …

Structural Control Of Wind Turbines With Soil Structure Interaction Included, Breiffni Fitzgerald, Biswajit Basu Jan 2016

Structural Control Of Wind Turbines With Soil Structure Interaction Included, Breiffni Fitzgerald, Biswajit Basu

Articles

The importance of considering soil structure interaction in structural control of wind turbines is investigated in this paper. An Euler–Lagrangian wind turbine mathematical model based on an energy formulation was developed for this purpose which considers the structural dynamics of the system and the interaction between in-plane and out-of-plane blade vibrations. Also, the interaction between the blades and the tower including a tuned mass damper (TMD) is considered. The turbine is subject to turbulent aerodynamic loading simulated using a modification to the classic Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory with turbulence generated from rotationally sampled spectra. The turbine is also subject …

Landscapes Of Interaction: Understanding Social Landscapes Through Quantitative Models Of Artifact Distributions, James R. Allison Jan 2016

Landscapes Of Interaction: Understanding Social Landscapes Through Quantitative Models Of Artifact Distributions, James R. Allison

Faculty Publications

Exchange of material goods is one of the most basic forms of human interactions. By tracing the distribution of ceramics, stone tools, and other materials archaeologists are often able to make inferences about the nature of interactions, and about the economic and social relationships of the people involved. These artefact distributions are a fundamental feature of social landscapes, with the potential to reveal much about the structure of social life. But artefact distributions are often complex and difficult to describe, especially at large spatial scales, and they often require some form of abstraction to make them comprehensible. Archaeologists have therefore …

Solar Photovoltaic System Control Topology Investigation For Power Source Mismatch, Lynette O'Callaghan Jan 2016

Solar Photovoltaic System Control Topology Investigation For Power Source Mismatch, Lynette O'Callaghan

Conference papers

An investigation into solar photovoltaic (PV) system control topology selection, when partial shade is anticipated in the solar array, is presented. As available area is maximised in Building Integrated PV (BIPV) systems, shading is an inevitable consequence. The presence of partial shading in a PV array leads to multiple power peaks in the power-voltage curve, due to bypass diode sections being triggered, and an increase in module mismatch losses in the array. A building energy design software, Integrated Environmental Solutions, is used to determine the shadowed area on PV modules throughout the year, incorporating the PV system location and geometrical …

Tabulating Pseudoprimes And Tabulating Liars, Andrew Shallue Jan 2016

Tabulating Pseudoprimes And Tabulating Liars, Andrew Shallue

Scholarship

This paper explores the asymptotic complexity of two problems related to the Miller-Rabin-Selfridge primality test. The first problem is to tabulate strong pseudoprimes to a single fixed base $a$. It is now proven that tabulating up to $x$ requires $O(x)$ arithmetic operations and $O(x\log{x})$ bits of space. The second problem is to find all strong liars and witnesses, given a fixed odd composite $n$. This appears to be unstudied, and a randomized algorithm is presented that requires an expected $O((\log{n})^2 + |S(n)|)$ operations (here $S(n)$ is the set of strong liars). Although interesting in their own right, a notable application …

This panel will deal with art, media and science via the concept of the ‘spin’ as a fundamental in quantum research where flux and vibration are at the very core. The historical model of media art, science and technology must now include the potential of the quantum phenomena through the emergence of the quantum computer. The subatomic world tantalises us with startling phenomena, but lies deep beneath the surface of human experience, forever hidden from direct observation. Data captured through complex physics experiments reveal quantum behaviours, but unlike scientific meanings constructed to objectively explain such phenomena, the panel will explore …
