Metacognitive Awareness Of Reading Strategies Among Efl High School Students In China / Li Yang, Yang Li
Student Works (2010-2019)
Readers’ metacognitive awareness of reading strategies has always been the interest of L2 reading research (Zhang, 2001). This study reported an investigation of 118 Chinese EFL students’ metacognitive awareness of reading strategies and the relationship between metacognitive awareness and actual reading performance. Data was collected through the Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) and one internal reading exam. The findings showed that students’ overall metacognitive awareness of reading strategies was at a moderate level with the highest level on problem-solving strategies, followed by global strategies and support strategies. Students from high English proficiency group reported considerably higher metacognitive awareness in global …
The Intonation Patterns Of Questions In Malaysian English / Yap Tsong Shiuan, Tsong Shiuan Yap
The Intonation Patterns Of Questions In Malaysian English / Yap Tsong Shiuan, Tsong Shiuan Yap
Student Works (2010-2019)
Since its introduction to Malaya by the British in the 18th century, the English language spoken in Malaysia has developed to become a local variety of English which we call Malaysian English (MalE). The purpose of this study is to identify and compare the intonation patterns used by MalE speakers when asking wh-questions and yes/no-questions. Twelve Malaysian speakers of the three major ethnic groups in Malaysia (Malay, Chinese and Indian) were recorded reading a list of questions and participating in an information gap activity. Analysis on the initial and final boundary tones indicates that Malaysian speakers of English almost consistently …
Learners’ Perceptions Of Learning English Through Metaphors / Ervinna Luk Yee Woon, Luk Yee Woon Ervinna
Learners’ Perceptions Of Learning English Through Metaphors / Ervinna Luk Yee Woon, Luk Yee Woon Ervinna
Student Works (2010-2019)
Learners and teachers often hold deep beliefs about language learning (Mariani, 2010) resulting in complexities based on attitudes, experiences and expectations (Riley, 2009). Effective language learning can potentially take place when the learners’ needs are met by the teachers through different classroom approaches. In the context of postgraduate teaching, learners come from various nationalities. Therefore, it is crucial to understand their perceptions on what constitutes language learning process and language teachers’ roles, especially in various socio-cultural educational settings (Borg, 2006) to ensure successful implementation of theoretical teaching methodologies (Sykes, 2011). Perception studies, however, revealed that examining the metaphors used by …

A Contrastive Study Of The Speech Act Of Refusal Among Efl Speakers / Zhao Chunli, Chunli Zhao
Student Works (2010-2019)
Refusal, as one of the most frequently performed speech acts in our daily lives, has recently gained increasing attention in pragmatics. In academic settings in Malaysia, for example, the opportunity for interaction frequently occurs among students from different cultural backgrounds. The purpose of this study is thus to investigate two groups of EFL speakers, namely Chinese and Iraqis, in their realization of the speech act of refusal in an academic setting. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the study seeks to explore the similarities and differences of refusal strategies employed by Chinese (mainland China) and Iraqi EFL …

The aim of this research is to analyse adverbs which had raised issues in Malay linguistics. Many language researchers have debated and discussed on adverbs in Malay, yet no decision has been reached. Therefore, this study aims to describe the forms and types of adverbs as well as to analyse the position of adverbs in the sentence construction. Data of adverbs for the study were taken from the novel Azfa Hanani written by Halis Azhan Mohd Hanafiah, students edition, 2010. This is a descriptive research, using two approaches, i. e. library research and textual study. Some 303 adverbs were identified …
Strategies Used In The English Translation Of Chinese Specific Terms In Government Work Reports / Tong Xing, Xing Tong
Student Works (2010-2019)
Translation is an important aspect in ESL pedagogy among Chinese learners. Translation provides Chinese learners strategies to use in the acquisition of English. By reviewing translated scripts, learners will be able to identify the differences between the Chinese and English language structures. Translating Chinese specific terms in English must be done carefully in order to make sure there is no change in the meaning as well as the purpose of the text. This research aims at investigating the English translation of Chinese specific terms in the 2014 Government Work Report, and to identify the pedagogical implication to Chinese ESL learners. …

The Influence Of A Digital Comic Tool On Writing Anxiety And Performance Of Malaysian Esl Learners / Faustina Roberts, Roberts Faustina
Student Works (2010-2019)
Writing is one of the difficult language skills causing anxiety among learners. Findings of a study conducted by Nesamalar, Saratha and Teh (2001) had revealed that many Malaysian ESL learners have poor writing skills. Hence, this study is geared towards investigating if Malaysian ESL learners experience writing anxiety, and if yes, what are the levels and causes of their writing anxiety. Since the Malaysian Education System recognises the need to incorporate Information and Communications Technology (ICT) into the teaching and learning procedure, this study also aims to explore the influence of a digital comic tool on the writing anxiety and …

Visualisation Studio For The Analysis Of Massive Datasets, Roy Colin Tucker
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis describes the research underpinning and the development of a cross platform application for the analysis of simultaneously recorded multi-dimensional spike trains. These spike trains are believed to carry the neural code that encodes information in a biological brain. A number of statistical methods already exist to analyse the temporal relationships between the spike trains. Historically, hundreds of spike trains have been simultaneously recorded, however as a result of technological advances recording capability has increased. The analysis of thousands of simultaneously recorded spike trains is now a requirement. Effective analysis of large data sets requires software tools that fully …

Assessing And Selecting Culturally Diverse Literature For The Classroom, Helen Adam, Laurie Harper
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Articulated within the Australian Curriculum (AC) and the Early Years Learning Framework for Australia (EYLF) are strong principles of diversity and intercultural awareness. These principles place a responsibility on educators to make curriculum decisions that reflect inclusive goals and practices. It is important that all children have access to authentic and accurate representations and role models related to their cultural backgrounds and everyday lives, in order to gain benefits associated with developing a positive sense of identity and belonging (Gollnick and Chinn, 2006; Jones Diaz and Harvey, 2002; Morgan, 2009) with additional benefits to their academic and intellectual progress (Department …
Satire And Synthesis: Parody And Satire Of Victorian Education In The Works Of Lewis Carroll, Cameron D. Sedlacek
Satire And Synthesis: Parody And Satire Of Victorian Education In The Works Of Lewis Carroll, Cameron D. Sedlacek
All Master's Theses
Education is an integral part of any society. Victorian England saw drastic reform in the method of childhood education, shifting from religious to secular forms of rote memorization. An analysis of the works of Lewis Carroll reveals significant instances of parody, pastiche, and satire on these styles of education and their corresponding reform. Unlike traditional satire, however, Lewis Carroll’s satire does not simply criticize these targets, but utilizes a strategy of synthesis to illustrate strengths and weaknesses of various conflicting educational ideologies and to suggest ways of adopting methods from all available options.

Reaction To Stimulus Figures In Chimpanzee Drawings, Alexandra Bobrinskoy Casti
All Master's Theses
Seven captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) produced drawings at the University of Oklahoma between November 1971 and November 1972. Chimpanzees drew on sheets of paper that were either blank or had a stimulus. The stimulus was located in the center or offset from the center. These drawings were scanned and digitized. Analysis tested whether chimpanzee mark placement was contingent on the location of stimulus figures. Centroid locations significantly changed between stimulus type for all drawing categories and among participants for free choice and central figure drawings. Participants drew in the empty space opposite offset figure drawings. Findings support previous …

Automatically extracted data is rarely “clean” with respect to pragmatic (real-world) constraints—which thus hinders applications that depend on quality data. We proffer a solution to detecting pragmatic constraint violations that works via a declarative and semantically enabled constraint-violation checker. In conjunction with an ensemble of automated information extractors, the implemented prototype checks both hard and soft constraints—respectively those that are satisfied or not and those that are satisfied probabilistically with respect to a threshold. An experimental evaluation shows that the constraint checker identifies semantic errors with high precision and recall and that pragmatic error identification can improve results
Why Implicit Control Cannot Be A Syntactic Or Semantic Relation Between Arguments, Jeffrey Jack Green, Alexander Williams
Why Implicit Control Cannot Be A Syntactic Or Semantic Relation Between Arguments, Jeffrey Jack Green, Alexander Williams
Faculty Publications
Implicit control (IC) is the apparent anaphora on display when we use (1) to mean (2). In this talk we develop two objections to grammatical accounts of IC with rationale clauses, which analyze it as identification of two variables in the meaning of the sentence. Such accounts, whether syntactic ([1]) or semantic [2,3]), can explain neither remote IC, as in (3), nor the truth-conditions of the rationale construction. Our objections thus favor the view of IC as a restrictive variety of discourse anaphora, as urged in [4,5]. In turn they weaken the persistent claim that IC indicates the syntactic presence …

It is important to identify the criteria that language teachers consider when selecting technologies. Software designers and developers, program administrators, and others need to be aware of adoption issues and practices for CALL technology. The focus of this case study was to look at six language instructors considered to be experts in their use of technology in the classroom and examine the criteria they use when selecting CALL resources or activities in the classroom. Interviews, recorded classroom observations, and analyses of teaching materials resulted in three themes: consideration of pedagogy, consideration of convenience, and consideration of authenticity. These are discussed …

Effect Of Two Semesters Of Small Group Problem-Based Learning (Pbl) On Expectations Of Physician Assistant Students Regarding Self, Others, And Facilitator Using The Pbl Readiness Questionnaire, Susan Hawkins, Mark Hertweck, Anthony Goreczny, John Laird
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess changes in expectations and perceptions among physician assistant (PA) program matriculants regarding small group problem-based learning (PBL) from the beginning to the end of the first didactic year. Some of the stress experienced by students entering health science professional programs using PBL may be due to lack of awareness of the goals and norms of PBL which differ from those of traditional lecture-based curricula. A change in student expectations as a result of participation in PBL would indicate that these goals and norms can be learned through participation. Methods: The authors …

For many Puerto Ricans and other Latinos, Roberto Clemente was more than just a baseball star. Above all, he was a symbol of hope and humanitarianism, succeeding despite the overt racial discrimination he encountered as a Black Puerto Rican. Off the field, Clemente was renowned and beloved for his involvement in charity work in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries. His final humanitarian act came about in 1972 on New Year’s Eve when the plane chartered to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua crashed into the ocean off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. His sudden and …
