Constructing A Measure To Assess The Perceived Benefits Of Faculty-To-Faculty Mentoring Programs: Applying A Rasch Measurement Theory For Calibration And Item Investigation, Richard K. Mensah Jan 2016

Constructing A Measure To Assess The Perceived Benefits Of Faculty-To-Faculty Mentoring Programs: Applying A Rasch Measurement Theory For Calibration And Item Investigation, Richard K. Mensah

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

The need to recruit quality professors into research-1 institutions continues to be a priority among American universities (Solem & Foote, 2004), but the ability to retain them is another story. The tenure process is quite demanding in such institutions where much emphasis is often placed on high quality research and publishing in reputable peer-reviewed journals (Boyer, 1992; DeFleur, 2007). Some scholars have identified faculty-to-faculty mentoring as one of many things institutions can promote to motivate beginning faculty to persist and complete the tenure process (Boice, 1991). On the other, others feel such activities are not necessary (Selby & Calhoun, 1998). …

Brief Report: A Mobile Application To Treat Prosodic Deficits In Autism Spectrum Disorder And Other Communication Impairments: A Pilot Study, Elizabeth Schoen Simmons, Rhea Paul, Frederick Shic

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

This study examined the acceptability of a mobile application, SpeechPrompts, designed to treat prosodic disorders in children with ASD and other communication impairments. Ten speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in public schools and 40 of their students, 5-19 years with prosody deficits participated. Students received treatment with the software over eight weeks. Pre- and post-treatment speech samples and student engagement data were collected. Feedback on the utility of the software was also obtained. SLPs implemented the software with their students in an authentic education setting. Student engagement ratings indicated students' attention to the software was maintained during treatment. Although more testing is …

Patent Anticipation And Obviousness As Possession, Timothy R. Holbrook Jan 2016

Patent Anticipation And Obviousness As Possession, Timothy R. Holbrook

Emory Law Journal

The concept of possession in property law operates to allocate property rights among competing claimants by awarding the property to the first to take possession. Possession in this context requires an act that communicates to third parties that someone has exercised dominion over the item. Patent law operates in similar ways. The doctrines of novelty and non-obviousness ask, in essence, whether the public was already in possession of the invention prior to the inventor. If so, then the patent application should be rejected. This possession-based view of novelty and non-obviousness offers important insights and prescriptions. As to novelty, the possession …

A Meta-Analysis Of Research-Based Reading Interventions With English Language Learners, Maritza Torres Jan 2016

A Meta-Analysis Of Research-Based Reading Interventions With English Language Learners, Maritza Torres

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Response to Intervention (RTI) model, introduced as part of the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 2004, is a proactive process of early interventions and evidence-based instruction for all students. RTI has additional intensive and individualized interventions to prevent student underachievement, including students at risk for academic failure and culturally and linguistically diverse students (Vellutino et al., 1996; Donovan & Cross, 2002; Francis, Rivera, Lesaux, Kieffer, & Rivera, 2006; Fuchs & Fuchs, 2006; Vellutino, Scanlon, Small, & Fanuele, 2006; Al Otaiba et al., 2009). Klingner and Edwards (2006) suggest that the needs of culturally and linguistically …

Implementation Of An Air Supply Unit Control Scheme For The Uc2av (Unmanned Circulation Control Aerial Vehicle), Cameron Rosen Jan 2016

Implementation Of An Air Supply Unit Control Scheme For The Uc2av (Unmanned Circulation Control Aerial Vehicle), Cameron Rosen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The expanded prevalence of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in recent years has created many opportunities to research novel applications for their use, enabled by the reduced cost, mission flexibility, and reduced risk that small-scale unmanned platforms provide in comparison to larger aircraft. Despite the versatility of unmanned aviation, limitations on payload size and weight, fuel and power capacity, and takeoff and landing infrastructure can restrict UAV applications, and have created a need for lift augmenting technologies that can reduce the impact of these limitations. Circulation Control (CC) is an active flow technique that has been proven as a method for …

God And “Gods” — Poetic Ambiguity And Wordplay: A Proposal Towards A Better Understanding Of Ps 82, Dragoslava Santrac Jan 2016

God And “Gods” — Poetic Ambiguity And Wordplay: A Proposal Towards A Better Understanding Of Ps 82, Dragoslava Santrac

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

The purpose of this article is twofold: 1) to attempt to demonstrate deliberate poetic ambiguity in Ps 82, and 2) to show that deliberate poetic ambiguity in Ps 82, if it exists, is not simply an expression of the poet’s artistic creativity, but conveys also the theological message of the psalm. The following steps are undertaken to meet this purpose: 1) briefly look at the main interpretations of the psalm, 2) discuss the literary technique of poetic ambiguity in the Psalms, 3) discern possible poetic ambiguity in the psalm, and 4) understand Ps 82 theologically in the light of deliberate …

Nutrition and Dietetics Faculty Research and Scholarship

To assess Texas physician nutrition counseling practices and interest in nutrition continuing education opportunities that would enhance patient care. A simple online survey was developed, validated then randomly distributed to physicians across Texas between May 2015 and August 2015. Participants (n=54) completed the survey regarding demographics, incorporation of nutrition with patient care, and nutrition-related continuing education opportunities. Physicians across Texas overwhelmingly reported insufficient incorporation of nutrition counseling into their practice and were in favor of additional continuing medical education (CME) opportunities focused on nutrition. Our results showed 89% of physicians care for patients who require nutrition counseling “Sometimes” or “Usually/Always”. …

How New York City Invented The Holiday Season: The Rise And Fall Of The World’S First Global Holiday, Ronald J. Brown Jan 2016

How New York City Invented The Holiday Season: The Rise And Fall Of The World’S First Global Holiday, Ronald J. Brown

New York School for Career and Applied Studies (NYSCAS) Publications and Research

Jesus may have been born in Bethlehem, but it was the city of New York that transformed the traditional day of his birth, December 25, into a national and eventually global holiday season. The evolution of the Christian religious holiday of Jesus’ birth into a secular global holiday that embraces all religions, cultures, and traditions is a unique example of the emergence of a global culture. Little did Clement Clarke Moore realize when he transferred the holiday of St. Nicholas from December 6 to the 25th, nor Macy’s Department Store when it organized its first Thanksgiving Day Parade, that they …

An Investigation Into The Accessibility Of Ap Calculus, Brian Austin Dodge Jan 2016

An Investigation Into The Accessibility Of Ap Calculus, Brian Austin Dodge

Capstones, Research Projects, and Curricula

This is a mixed methods ethnographic study conducted to determine what obstacles students face when approaching AP Calculus. I focused my study on home economics, peer pressure, ELL status and home support. Overall, I found that being a student who is ELL (hereafter defined as a student who was or currently is required to take ACCESS testing) had the most negative effect of the previously listed factors. Home economics and peer pressure were inconclusive or often had no effect. Finally, having a supportive home life in the form of parents who value education, encourage goal-setting, and set high expectations had …

Archiving Academic Tweets: The Digital Backchannel As An Ephemeral Archive, Ashley Hall Jan 2016

Archiving Academic Tweets: The Digital Backchannel As An Ephemeral Archive, Ashley Hall

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

While both Twitter and backchannel discourse have been previously studied, analyzed, and theorized, there has not yet been an investigation of how live tweeting during an academic conference creates a backchannel conversation that is an ephemeral digital archive. Recognizing the importance of the backchannel conversation taking place among scholars via Twitter during academic conferences, this essay fills a gap in the existing research by arguing that we should preserve and archive conference Twitterstreams; doing so, I maintain, would make backchannel tweets available for subsequent access and study, thereby addressing the inherent ephemerality of the digital Twitterstream. To this end, I …

Gesture, Intimacy, And Violence In Contemporary Artists’ Books, Lauren Benke Jan 2016

Gesture, Intimacy, And Violence In Contemporary Artists’ Books, Lauren Benke

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The problem of the archive is a problem of lost gestures. The idea of the ephemeral body has shaped the development of performance and archival studies since the 1960s, when Richard Schechner described the theater as a transient medium that has "no original artwork at all" [2] and Marcia B. Siegel wrote that dance "exists at a perpetual vanishing point [. . .] it is an event that disappears in the very act of materializing" [3]. Even as archivists constantly innovate methods for preserving the gestures of performance art and embodied experience, the shift toward digitization means that, …

Reanimating The Archive: Collaboration And Performance With The Voices Of The Dead, Erin R. Anderson Jan 2016

Reanimating The Archive: Collaboration And Performance With The Voices Of The Dead, Erin R. Anderson

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

I'd like to begin this essay by introducing the project that occasioned its writing. Our Time is Up: An Audio Drama (2014, 43:38, stereo audio) follows the story of an elderly couple, Jake and Helen McCleary, as they struggle to save their troubled marriage. I produced this drama in collaboration with actors Josiah Patton and Juanita Bowman, who perform as the voices of Jake and Helen; I play the couple's therapist. In the opening scene, we meet Jake and Helen as they arrive at the therapist's office for their first session.

English And Latin Lexical Innovations In Reginald Pecock’S Corpus, J. A. T. Smith Jan 2016

English And Latin Lexical Innovations In Reginald Pecock’S Corpus, J. A. T. Smith

All Faculty Open Access Publications

This article examines the Middle English and Latin word formations of Bishop Reginald Pecock (d. 1459). In particular, it addresses the false assumption that Pecock was intentionally writing in an English that was primarily Germanic in etymology. The article concludes that Pecock’s lexical innovations were primarily Latinate, that he was unlikely to be concerned with the “purity” of his word formation, and that it was highly unlikely that he was trying to eschew Latinate vocabulary. These conclusions were ascertained through a comprehensive assessment of Pecock’s vocabulary which shows that Pecock created 715 new words out of a total estimated vocabulary …

A Culturally And Linguistically Responsive Framework For Improving Academic And Postsecondary Outcomes Of Students With Moderate Or Severe Intellectual Disability, Christopher J. Rivera, Bree A. Jimenez, Joshua N. Baker, Tracy Spies, Pamela J. Mims, Ginevra Courtade Jan 2016

Mims, Ginevra Courtade

ETSU Faculty Works

The needs of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students with moderate or severe intellectual disability (ID) are quite unique and complex. CLD students with moderate or severe ID face many of the same issues as their non-disabled CLD peers; however, due to the nature of their disability this may lead to even less access to the general curriculum, appropriate services, materials, and meaningful collaboration between families and educators. The purpose of this article is to provide a culturally responsive framework for facilitating academic instruction for CLD students with moderate or severe ID that also includes appropriate supports in an effort …

Is Pro Bono Practice In Legal “Backwaters” Beyond The Scope Of The Model Rules?, Barbara Graves-Poller Jan 2016

Is Pro Bono Practice In Legal “Backwaters” Beyond The Scope Of The Model Rules?, Barbara Graves-Poller

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "While many private sector attorneys offer pro bono legal services that reflect the same level of diligence and skill characteristic of the work done on behalf of their paying clients, the egregious failures described in the MC v. GC case and those that occur in many unreported matters highlight the dangers of pro bono initiatives designed to bridge the “access to justice gap.” As used here, the term “justice gap” refers to the chasm between the need for legal representation in civil disputes and public interest attorneys available to serve poor and working class clients. Justice gap pro bono …

Food Insecurity In Nepal : A Cross-Sectional Analysis From 75 Districts, Aarti Reddy Jan 2016

Food Insecurity In Nepal : A Cross-Sectional Analysis From 75 Districts, Aarti Reddy

Honors Theses

There are a number of studies regarding food insecurity, but not many that investigate the simultaneous relationships between food insecurity and the measures of well-being (health, education and gender equality). This paper conducts a district-level cross-sectional analysis of the relationship between food insecurity and the measures of well-being in Nepal using an ordered probit model. Instrument variables are used in a two-stage analysis to address the problem of endogeneity. The study finds that health deprivation levels significantly affect levels of food insecurity in a district but education and gender literacy disparity are less significant. Addressing issues of endogeneity and multicolinearity …

Breaking The Language Barrier : The Spanish Translation Of The Barriers To Access To Care Evaluation (Bace), Yosmary Rodriguez Jan 2016

Breaking The Language Barrier : The Spanish Translation Of The Barriers To Access To Care Evaluation (Bace), Yosmary Rodriguez

Honors Theses

The Hispanic/Latino population in the United States has been identified as a high-risk group for mental health problems. Unfortunately, due to commonly reported factors such as lack of linguistically and culturally appropriate services, many fail to seek treatment. While growing research has focused on identifying and addressing the different barriers to accessing mental health care experienced by this community, there continues to be a lack of validated Spanish assessments to aid in the evaluation of these barriers. In hopes of overcoming this barrier, and working towards better quality of care for this growing population, this project translated the Barriers to …

In God We Trust. All Others Must Bring Data. - W. Edwards Deming Using Word Embeddings To Recognize Idioms, Jing Peng, Anna Feldman Jan 2016

In God We Trust. All Others Must Bring Data. - W. Edwards Deming Using Word Embeddings To Recognize Idioms, Jing Peng, Anna Feldman

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Expressions, such as add fuel to the fire, can be interpreted literally or idiomatically depending on the context they occur in. Many Natural Language Processing applications could improve their performance if idiom recognition were improved. Our approach is based on the idea that idioms violate cohesive ties in local contexts, while literal expressions do not. We propose two approaches: 1) Compute inner product of context word vectors with the vector representing a target expression. Since literal vectors predict well local contexts, their inner product with contexts should be larger than idiomatic ones, thereby telling apart literals from idioms; and (2) …

T. S. Eliot’S ‘Obscurity’ In The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock, Longxing Wei Jan 2016

T. S. Eliot’S ‘Obscurity’ In The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock, Longxing Wei

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

T. S. Eliot’s earliest verse is composed of observations, detached, ironic, and alternatively disillusioned and nostalgic in tone. Eliot’s mingling of subtle observation with unexpected cliché represents a difficulty that is often magnified because too much ’obscurity’ is assumed. This paper aims at clarifying the ’obscurity’ by means of a stylistic analysis of the linguistic devices that the poet used to create "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and its intended meaning. Adopting the concept of style as ’foregrounding’, the idea that style is constituted by departures from linguistic norms, it analyzes the poem in terms of its lexical …
