English Faculty Publications
This chapter explores the ways in which the field of Game Studies helps shape popular understandings of player, play, and game, and specifically how the field alters the conceptual, linguistic, and discursive apparatuses that gamers use to contextualize, describe, and make sense of their experiences. The chapter deploys the concept of apportioned commodity fetishism to analyze the phenomena of discourse as practice, persona, and vagaries of game design, recursion, lexical formation, institutionalization, systems of self-effectiveness, theory as anti-theory, and commodification.

The article explores how the media constructs news, and offers extensive history on the adverse narrative media tropes about Black men since colonial newspapers. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis of news narratives and images, this article demonstrates how Ferguson accounts emphasized Brown’s deviance and chaos and disorder. After offering comparative analysis of White criminality and protest news narratives, the article presses upon the social effects of racist and racialized media narratives. The article examines the controversy through First Amendment free speech, hate crimes, and true threat principles as well as FCC regulation of broadcasting, and media ownership. While explicating the …

The Ethics Of Visual Legal Rhetoric, Michael D. Murray
The Ethics Of Visual Legal Rhetoric, Michael D. Murray
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This article discusses both visual rhetoric and visual narrativity. Visual rhetoric is the use of graphics, photographs, and other depictions for communication, for construction of knowledge and understanding, and ultimately for persuasion in the truth and rightness of the communication. Narrativity, which is sometimes described as narrative reasoning or storytelling," is the modern movement to focus our legal writing on the tools that best communicate our clients' stories-their situation, conditions, and circumstances-along with the "story" of the development, growth, and meaning of the law itself that provides the context for the clients' legal situation. Communicating the story of the development …

Visual Rhetoric: Topics Of Invention And Arrangement And Tropes Of Style, Michael D. Murray
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This Article evaluates visual legal rhetoric in order to demonstrate the potential of visual-graphical devices and narrative elements for use in legal discourse. The subject of my demonstration of graphical rhetorical devices is the famous work of modern rhetoric, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail." I will perform a rhetorical analysis of the verbal topics of invention and tropes of style in the text of the letter, and simultaneously demonstrate the use of images and visual elements in an "illustrated" form of the letter.
Part II of this Article provides an introduction and background information regarding …

We Want To Do It Our Way: The Neutralisation Approach To Managing Information Systems Security By Small Businesses, Kennedy Njenga, Pierre Jordaan
We Want To Do It Our Way: The Neutralisation Approach To Managing Information Systems Security By Small Businesses, Kennedy Njenga, Pierre Jordaan
The African Journal of Information Systems
Small businesses thrive in the developing economy of South Africa and address the important issue of unemployment and poverty that exists in the country. A large number of these businesses can be found in the province of Gauteng due to the large and diverse economic contribution the province delivers to the economy of South Africa. With the increased use of Information Systems (IS) by small businesses across the Gauteng province and in South Africa generally, there is increasingly constant exposure to information security risks. Interestingly, standards such as NISTIR 7621 specifically tailored to small businesses and which could offer great …

Developing Methods For The Estimation Of Stature And Their Use As A Proxy For Health Among The Ancient Chachapoya Of Peru, Armando Anzellini
Developing Methods For The Estimation Of Stature And Their Use As A Proxy For Health Among The Ancient Chachapoya Of Peru, Armando Anzellini
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Population mean stature and patterns of health are often linked in anthropological studies, yet few studies control for the multifactorial nature of achieving adult standing height. This thesis explores the intersection of health and stature by analyzing the skeletal remains of 161 adult individuals from the archaeological site of Kuelap, in the eastern slopes of the northern Peruvian Andes, and also tests current biometric methods for estimating stature from skeletal remains. This Chachapoya site dates to the Late Intermediate Period (AD 900 – 1470) and Late Horizon (AD 1470 – 1536) and resides in the high altitude sub-tropical forests of …
The Crossed Bands Motif: What Does It Mean?, Brittany Luther
The Crossed Bands Motif: What Does It Mean?, Brittany Luther
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The crossed bands motif is an iconographic symbol that appears among many Mesoamerican cultures' art including Olmec, Izapan and Maya spanning from the Early Pre-Classic to the Classic periods in Mesoamerica. Pierce explains in his theory on signs that icons, symbols and indices all contain meaning. This meaning was given to the signs by the one who commissioned the medium on which the sign is placed; therefore it is important to understand the meaning of these signs to learn more about the person or people who built them. The crossed bands motif has previously been studied based on individual pieces …
Afro-Caribbean Parental Influence: Family Chronicles Of The Educational Journey From Child To Medical Student, Carlene Grant
Afro-Caribbean Parental Influence: Family Chronicles Of The Educational Journey From Child To Medical Student, Carlene Grant
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many ethnic groups in the United States have struggled for the opportunity to be identified as an individual group. In academia, these students are often aggregated into a larger category, with little acknowledgment for the difference in their cultural heritage. Along with these cultural differences, Afro-Caribbean parents and their children are met with other challenges in the pursuit of lifelong goals (Sowell, 1978). The decision to become a medical doctor is one that can often not be made alone. Using the framework of Cultural Ecological Theory and Social Construction (Ogbu 1990, 1992; Berger & Luckman, 1991) this study was conducted …
El Efecto De La Variación Dialectal En El Procesamiento, Kirsten Schanze
El Efecto De La Variación Dialectal En El Procesamiento, Kirsten Schanze
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lexical variation, or the existence of multiple lexemes that can be used to denote a particular concept, is a phenomenon characteristic of most of the world’s language systems. Often times the source of this variation is difficult to determine, with a variety of inter- and intra-linguistic factors at play. This thesis was conducted with three main goals: 1) to delineate lexical items typical to specific dialects of Spanish and generate country-specific word lists that focus on salient contrasts between the different varieties of the language; 2) to determine whether speakers of particular varieties of Spanish, namely Puerto Rican and Venezuelan …
Towards A Theory Of Autism Spectrum Disorder Program Implementation, Ian Gesundheit
Towards A Theory Of Autism Spectrum Disorder Program Implementation, Ian Gesundheit
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the increased prevalence of students qualifying for services within Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) programs (Odom, Cox and Brock, 2013), it is imperative that the field comes to better understand how successful programs can be replicated at scale. The implementation of effective instructional programs for students with ASD across school systems on a large scale is a difficult task. School systems have tried to replicate successful programs for diverse learners but have been largely unable to do so. For students with disabilities, who perform poorly compared to their peers without disabilities (Odom et al., 2013), the need to replicate successful …

The Impact Of Various Characteristics Of Prekindergarten Services For Students With Disabilities On Later School Performance, Tanya Shores
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study addressed the problem of limited data for determining the effectiveness of prekindergarten programs for students with disabilities. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between participation in ESE services during prekindergarten and long term outcomes for students who received these services. Outcome measures included third grade academic performance and needs for exceptional student education (ESE) services. Regression analysis and correlational analysis were conducted for each of two research questions as appropriate. The findings of this research indicated inconsistent statistically significant relationships between the characteristics of ESE services students with disabilities received during prekindergarten and the …
A Comparison Of The Academic Achievement Of English Learners And Non-English Learners In Digital And Non-Digital Learning Environments, Enrique Vela
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify the extent to which learning in a digital school environment impacts the reading and mathematics achievement of English learners (ELs) in elementary and secondary school settings. In addition, this study intended to determine the extent, if any, that learning in a digital school environment narrows the achievement gap in reading and mathematics between ELs and their non-EL counterparts in elementary and secondary schools. Based on data collected from the first year of a 1:1 digital pilot implementation in a large urban school district in Florida, the results of this study identified grade …
Examining Elementary Preservice Teacher Efficacy To Teach Writing In A Title 1 School: A Mixed Method Study Of A School-Based Teacher Education Course Intervention, Norine Blanch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the demographics of the United States change, barriers persistently thwart efforts to ensure that all students, regardless of ethnicity, academic ability, or family circumstance, have equal opportunities to learn. Diminished retention rates of effective educators in Title 1 schools, elevated rates at which students from low-income families are taught by inexperienced or unqualified teachers and insufficient preparation of preservice teachers (PSTs) to teach in Title 1 schools are three such barriers. Policy reform organizations interested in improving the effectiveness of teacher education programs nationwide suggest forging strong clinical partnerships between universities and schools by relocating coursework to school-based settings …

Examining Presence And Influence Of Linguistic Characteristics In The Twitter Discourse Surrounding The Women's Right To Drive Movement In Saudi Arabia, Abdulsamad Sahly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have been popular tools for social and political movements in non-democratic societies in which traditional media outlets are under government control. Activists in Saudi Arabia, particularly women, have launched several campaigns through social media to demand the right to drive for women. This study used framing theory as the foundation for looking at the degree to which cognitive, emotion, and religious or moral language has been used to frame discussion of this issue on Twitter. Additionally, this study observed the relationship between these linguistic attributes in Twitter and retweeting behavior to understand the …
Players, Consumers And Creators: Literacy Orientations Among Adolescents Attending A Small, Rural School, Christina Marie Robison
Players, Consumers And Creators: Literacy Orientations Among Adolescents Attending A Small, Rural School, Christina Marie Robison
Doctoral Dissertations
This phenomenological study identifies three distinct literacy orientations among ten eighth and ninth grade students who attend a small, rural school in Northern New England: Game Players, Critical Consumers, and Aspirational Creators. In order to understand ongoing challenges for rural students in post-secondary life, students’ literacy practices, values and beliefs are examined within the context of students’ lived experiences and analyzed through the lens of literacy sponsorship. Their literacy practices, which are superficially uniform, are shown to have varying significance depending upon their literacy orientations. These underlying philosophies represent the purpose students perceive their literacy practices serve: to further their …

“Half Cocked”: The Persistence Of Anachronism And Presentism In The Academic Debate Over The Second Amendment, Saul Cornell
“Half Cocked”: The Persistence Of Anachronism And Presentism In The Academic Debate Over The Second Amendment, Saul Cornell
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
James Lindgren’s recent forward to The Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology’s 2015 symposium on “The Past and Future of Guns,” purports to be a neutral and scholarly account of the current state of the debate on the meaning of the Second Amendment. Lindgren’s introductory essay fails to achieve both of these goals. Rather than survey the pre-Heller scholarship in a comprehensive and even-handed manner, Lindgren provides a distorted and superficial account of the historical literature. He compounds this error by ignoring the vast post-Heller scholarly literature, failing to note that much of this recent body of scholarship has been …

A Global Measure Of Digital And Ict Literacy Skills, John Ainley, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon
ICT - Digital Literacy
Digital and ICT literacy is considered an important competence for full participation in a knowledge economy and an information society. Consequently, interest at national and international level has emerged to explore the best ways of measuring the extent to which, and how equitably, competence in this area is being achieved. This paper reviews the definitions of digital and ICT literacy that have been adopted in cross-national studies, investigates the approaches to the assessment of digital and ICT literacy that have been employed in those studies and articulates the criteria that should guide the development of a global measure of digital …
Ukraine: Analyzing The Revolution And Nato Action In Light Of The U.N. Charter And Nicaragua, Matthew Emery
Ukraine: Analyzing The Revolution And Nato Action In Light Of The U.N. Charter And Nicaragua, Matthew Emery
Emory International Law Review
Ukraine has been subject to civil unrest and Russian aggression since early 2014. Amidst these international conflicts and pressures, NATO has made it clear that it wants the current Ukrainian government to succeed, mostly because it would establish a very pro-Western government. In this Comment, Matthew Emery argues that NATO is limited in the assistance it can provide to Ukraine, because Ukraine is not a member of NATO. Furthermore, this Comment argues that any assistance from NATO countries to the current Ukrainian government would violate the International Court of Justice's decision in Nicaragua because the government is illegitimate.
Indigenous Interpretations Of The Right To Education Incorporating Gandhi's Visionary Philosophy To Educational Reform, Anna Saraie
Emory International Law Review
Since the 1940s, there has been growing movement for the promotion of education. There is now an obligation in the international community to ensure that every child has the resources to exercise his or her right to education. Two problems have emerged from this obligation. First, international agreements define the right ambiguously but requires countries to adhere to strict and unrealistic deadlines. This has burdened developing countries. Second, there has been an increase in violent opposition groups targeting children to protest the promotion of education. To combat these problems, states should incorporate Gandhi's philosophy. Gandhi advocated that education should be …
