The Learning Experiences Of Immigrants Who Are Graduates Of An Entry-Level Baccalaureate Nursing Program In Minnesota, Marcia L. Scherer Jan 2016

The Learning Experiences Of Immigrants Who Are Graduates Of An Entry-Level Baccalaureate Nursing Program In Minnesota, Marcia L. Scherer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States faces an immigrant population explosion with more foreignborn residents compared to any country in the world. Each immigrant enters with individual and cultural health beliefs and, as they seek health care, often prefers to receive care from someone who understands and supports their cultural beliefs and customs. Nurses comprise the largest segment of healthcare providers. Within this population of nurses, the number of ethnically diverse nurses continues to stagnate at astoundingly low levels. The literature reviewed neglected to identify interviewing immigrants separate from ethnically diverse nursing students. Understanding the immigrant’s nursing education experiences is essential to addressing …

Teaching Anglo-American Academic Writing And Intercultural Rhetoric: A Grounded Theory Study Of Practice In Ontario Secondary Schools, Amir Kalan Jan 2016

Teaching Anglo-American Academic Writing And Intercultural Rhetoric: A Grounded Theory Study Of Practice In Ontario Secondary Schools, Amir Kalan

English Faculty Publications

This qualitative research project is a grounded theory study of the experiences of five EAL (English as an additional language) academic writing instructors with intercultural rhetoric. Following the academic conversation about contrastive/intercultural rhetoric, this investigation explores narratives of classroom practice in Ontario secondary schools in order to underline L2 writing activities that are sensitive to intercultural rhetoric. This paper includes explanations of the phenomenon of intercultural rhetoric as identified by the interviewed instructors and lists practical strategies employed by the participants. These strategies are organized in three categories: (1) strategies that use the potential of students’ first languages and mother …

Mobilizing Practitioner Action Research To Foster Critical Pedagogy In A Large Online Undergrad University Course, Amir Kalan, Michelle Troberg Jan 2016

Mobilizing Practitioner Action Research To Foster Critical Pedagogy In A Large Online Undergrad University Course, Amir Kalan, Michelle Troberg

English Faculty Publications

This article reports aspects of a practitioner action research project conducted by the teachers of a large online English grammar course. The project was mobilized to create possibilities for developing online critical pedagogy. The online educators involved in this inquiry took measures to modify the syllabus they were working with in response to moments of dissonance while they were trying to comprehend students’ online identities as valuable resources to enrich the process of teaching and learning. The preliminary outcomes of the project, which is still in progress, suggest that critical pedagogy would be more accurately conceptualized by complexifying the traditional …

The Biosemiotics Of Aldo Leopold, Rebecca Potter Jan 2016

The Biosemiotics Of Aldo Leopold, Rebecca Potter

English Faculty Publications

Responding to Jean-Claude Gens’ article “Uexküll’s Kompositionslehre and Leopold’s ‘land ethic’ in dialogue,” which appeared in Sign Systems Studies in 2013, this article further develops a direct connection between Aldo Leopold’s approach to ecology and Jakob von Uexküll’s umwelt theory. The connection between Uexküll and Leopold is especially evident in Leopold’s descriptions of animal behaviour that he presents in the first part of his seminal work, A Sand County Almanac. In this work specifically, Leopold illustrates the biosemiotic processes described by Uexküll, and does so with a purpose: to reshape our understanding of the biotic community as a place …

Forest Community Integration And Collective Agency In Korup National Park,Cameroon: Interactions With Forest Policies And The Redd+ Mechanism, Adam E. Flanery Jan 2016

Forest Community Integration And Collective Agency In Korup National Park,Cameroon: Interactions With Forest Policies And The Redd+ Mechanism, Adam E. Flanery

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Cameroon is in the process of developing its program for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). Two communities near the southern portion of Korup National Park in the Southwest Region were studied to understand the implications for REDD+ implementation in the area, in light of current forest policies including community forestry, agro-industry, and forest conservation. Frameworks used to understand the communities are an institutional analysis model, and the field-interactional perspective of community agency. I used qualitative methods of data collection, including a questionnaire survey, in-depth interviews with villagers and NGO (non-governmental organization) workers, and other ethnographic techniques. Various …

Studying Soap Operas, Paul A. Soukup Jan 2016

Studying Soap Operas, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

This present issue of Communication Research Trends will focus on research about soap operas published in the last 15 years, that is, from the year 2000 to the present. This more recent research shows one key difference: the interest in soap opera has become worldwide. This appears in the programs that people listen to or watch and in communication researchers who themselves come from different countries.

Casting Sound: Modality And Poetics In Gabriella Ghermandi’S Regina Di Fiori E Di Perle, Laura Dolp, Eveljn Ferraro Jan 2016

Casting Sound: Modality And Poetics In Gabriella Ghermandi’S Regina Di Fiori E Di Perle, Laura Dolp, Eveljn Ferraro

Modern Languages & Literature

This article investigates Gabriella Ghermandi’s novel Regina di fiori e di perle (2007) through two disciplinary perspectives: the first considers music as a historical and social practice through historical observation of Ghermandi’s characters who reference Ethiopian oral traditions; the second explores the contemporary dynamics of migration and transnational identity through textual analysis that critiques how storytelling practices are carried into an Italian context. We argue that the novel reflects a dissemination of oral memory across generations and gender and into a postcolonial setting, and that its characters reflect adaptations to institutional and twentieth-century technological change. Crucially, and more specifically, the …

On Norms. An Application Of Brennan’S And Bicchieri’S Ideas To Bad Citizenship And Civil Disobedience, Marco Antonio Joven-Romero Jan 2016

On Norms. An Application Of Brennan’S And Bicchieri’S Ideas To Bad Citizenship And Civil Disobedience, Marco Antonio Joven-Romero

Saint Louis University Public Law Review

In this paper I analyze the recent definitions of norm given by Brennan, Eriksson, Goodin, and Southwood in Explaining Norms (2013) and by Cristna Bicchieri in The Grammar of Society (2006). I illustrate the analysis with bad citizenship and civil disobedience phenomena, focusing on some particular cases: abortion, cyclist urban mobility, marijuana legalization, management of cultural and linguistic diversity, and squatter movements.

In section 1, I introduce both views of norms, the methodology I use and the hypothesis I defend. In section 2, Norms in Brennan, Eriksson, Goddin, and Southwood’s ‘Explaining Norms’ (2013), I look at the agentialist …

Lgbtq Inclusion As An Outcome Of Critical Pedagogy, Michelle L. Page Jan 2016

Lgbtq Inclusion As An Outcome Of Critical Pedagogy, Michelle L. Page

Education Publications

Students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) are at greater personal and academic risk than their heterosexual peers (Kosciw et al.., 2014). Many experience a negative school environment and few see themselves represented in the curriculum. According to the literature, few English/Language Arts teachers are utilizing LGBTQ-focused texts in their courses (Blackburn & Buckley, 2005; Page, 2014). This case study demonstrates how one English/Language Arts teacher provided challenging, safe, inclusive educational experiences for students. In so doing, the instructor also provides an example of critical pedagogy in practice. The multiple strands of the teacher’s instructional approach …

The Cancer Nurse Coordinator Service In Western Australia: Perspectives Of Specialist Cancer Nurse Coordinators, L Monterosso, V Platt, M Krishnasamy, P Yates, C Bulsara

Nursing Papers and Journal Articles

Objective: In Western Australia the cancer nurse coordinator (CNC) role is unique, state wide and situated in nursing. It requires the domains of clinical expert, resource consultant, educator, change agent, researcher and advocate to facilitate seamless coordination of care for patients across metropolitan, rural and remote geographical areas of Western Australia. This study examined the role, function and impact of CNCs from the perspective of coordinators themselves.

Design: Prospective two-phase mixed method study. This paper reports data from the Self Report Activity Questionnaire in Phase one.

Setting: The state-wide Western Australian Cancer Nurse Coordinator Service.

Subjects: Metropolitan and rural CNCs …

Lateralization Of Tempo Processing And Sensorimotor Synchronization, Robert P. Noneman Jan 2016

Lateralization Of Tempo Processing And Sensorimotor Synchronization, Robert P. Noneman

Theses

Previous neurological literature has proposed a potential specialization of the right hemisphere for tempo processes; however, this hypothesis had yet to be tested via behavioral measures within the cognitive literature. The present study was designed to investigate a potential specialization of the right hemisphere in tempo perception and production using a dichotic listening task paradigm by employing a 2 (Target Ear: left, right) x 2 (Responding Hand: left, right) x 3 (Target Stimulus: same, decreasing, increasing) in a within subjects design presenting isochronous tones. Although an ear advantage for tempo perception ability was not detected, we confirmed the left ear …

The Paul Warnke Nomination : The Construction Of A Controversy And The Reformation Of U.S. Strategic Doctrine In The Public Sphere, Jennifer L. Mellard Jan 2016

The Paul Warnke Nomination : The Construction Of A Controversy And The Reformation Of U.S. Strategic Doctrine In The Public Sphere, Jennifer L. Mellard

Theses

In January, 1977, President Jimmy Carter's nomination of the "assured destruction" advocate Paul C. Warnke to the dual posts of chief negotiator for the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT II) and director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (ACDA) led to a national controversy. The Senate confirmed Warnke by only a slim voting margin of 58-40 for negotiator and 70-29 for director. Commentators have attributed the nomination's controversial status and results of the vote against him solely to his reputation as an arms controller and for the purpose of controlling SALT II Treaty negotiations. Warnke's private papers, chronological attention …

A Comparison Of The Utility Of Craniometric And Dental Morphological Data For Assessing Biodistance And Sex-Differential Migration In The Pacific Islands, Brittney A. Eubank Jan 2016

A Comparison Of The Utility Of Craniometric And Dental Morphological Data For Assessing Biodistance And Sex-Differential Migration In The Pacific Islands, Brittney A. Eubank

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Genetic analysis of maternally-inherited mitochondrial DNA and the paternally-inherited Y-chromosome yield contrasting pictures of movement of peoples into the Pacific Islands. A possible explanation for this discrepancy is a matrilocal residency pattern practiced by early Pacific settlers, in which Melanesian men were brought into settler communities to intermarry with local women, yielding a higher intrapopulation variance and lower interpopulation variance exhibited in males compared to females. This research investigates the possibility of sex-differential migration in the Oceanic populations of Easter Island, Fiji, Guam, Mokapu, and New Britain through analysis of biodistance based on dental morphological trait frequencies and craniometric measures …

The Bridge River Dogs: Interpreting Adna And Stable Isotope Analysis Collected From Dog Remains, Emilia Tifental Jan 2016

The Bridge River Dogs: Interpreting Adna And Stable Isotope Analysis Collected From Dog Remains, Emilia Tifental

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Excavations at the Bridge River site have been on-going since 2003, increasing our understanding of the communities that inhabited the Middle Fraser Canyon, British Columbia over 1,000 years ago. The most recent excavation at Housepit 54 in the summer of 2014 supplied further data regarding relationships between people and their dogs. Dogs are well documented in the Middle Fraser Canyon through both archaeological excavations and traditional knowledge. A household's possession of a dog has been linked to other prestigious materials, and therefore been interpreted as an indicator of wealth and status. The present study was aimed at further investigation of …

Re-Analyzing The Function Of Demonstrative Reference In Tajik, Kelly E. Bowman Jan 2016

Re-Analyzing The Function Of Demonstrative Reference In Tajik, Kelly E. Bowman

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis presents a re-analysis of Tajik demonstratives based on an alternative to the widely accepted framework for understanding demonstrative reference. In this framework, demonstrative reference is categorized according to two criteria: the anchor relative to which reference is made, and the number of spatial distinctions the system has for encoding distance from the anchor (Levinson 2004, O’Grady 2010). According to previous literature (Rastorgueva 1963, Perry 2005, Windfuhr & Perry 2009), Tajik has a speaker-anchored, two-way reference system. However, these criteria alone do not account for the data presented in this thesis. I therefore propose the following change to this …

A Brief But Intensive Language-Literacy Intervention For An Adolescent, Minako I. May Jan 2016

A Brief But Intensive Language-Literacy Intervention For An Adolescent, Minako I. May

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The current service delivery model most frequently used in a school setting involves short, infrequent sessions over a 180-day school year. To date, there is no research that supports the current service delivery model as being the most effective and efficient model of intervention. As students transition from elementary to middle school, this model is particularly problematic for the adolescent student because of a rotating school schedule, increasing language demands of the academic curriculum, and development of self-perception and academic self-concept. A brief but intensive language-literacy intervention that takes place outside of the school year may be an effective and …

Better Talking Heads: Concerning Fuller "Experience" In Environmental Philosophy, Christina Bovinette Jan 2016

Better Talking Heads: Concerning Fuller "Experience" In Environmental Philosophy, Christina Bovinette

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Through this project, I demonstrate how professional environmental ethics is constrained by, what I call, a rationalist bias and I offer a different approach to environmental questions in the face of this observation. Intellectual life depends on material conditions and our necessary physical ties to Earth. I suggest that an emphasis on our physical connections with the planet can benefit professional environmental ethics. I draw from some feminist understandings to discuss the advantages of a professional environmental ethics that respects and integrates experiences outside of rational deliberation. I attempt to bring my discussion of experience, environmental ethics, and some feminist …

Hyperconnected School Leadership: Shared Experiences, Elizabeth Sue Wargo Jan 2016

Hyperconnected School Leadership: Shared Experiences, Elizabeth Sue Wargo

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Leaders remain perpetually connected to their work because of the rapid advancement of information technology. This research, using a qualitative approach, explored how increased connective technology is affecting school leaders with the central question: How is hyperconnectivity experienced by school leaders? Using personal interviews, the lived experiences of fifteen international middle and high school principals with one-to-one student-to-device programs were collected. Raw transcriptions of their experiences were analyzed using the descriptive phenomenological approach as outlined by Giorgi (2009). This approach allowed for the data to be reduced into a single narrative description shared by all participants indicating the essences of …

How To Hold On To Hierarchy: Russia And The Near Abroad, Andrew Jensen Jan 2016

How To Hold On To Hierarchy: Russia And The Near Abroad, Andrew Jensen

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

The smoldering wreckage of a commercial airliner in an Eastern Ukraine farm field signified so much more than just hundreds of innocent deaths; the downing was a bloody symbol of just how far Ukraine had fallen. Peace agreements between the rebels and government forged in Minsk in September 2014 and February 2015 failed to stamp out the persistent violence. Not simply a civil war, the rebels had been trained, armed, and assisted by the Russian military. While Russia flatly denied its contribution of men and munitions, few in the West believed the claims. Despite several rounds of sanctions by the …
