The Reception Of Tacitus’ Germania By The German Humanists: From Provence To Empire, Thomas Renna Jan 2016

The Reception Of Tacitus’ Germania By The German Humanists: From Provence To Empire, Thomas Renna

Quidditas

It is well known he German Humanists (1490-1540) used Tacitus’ Germania to advance their notion of the German nation in response to Italian criticism. But less attention has been given to the German nature of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (1509). I argue that Humanists after Conrad Celtis (Bebel, Wimpheling, Cochlaeus, Brant, Irenicus, Franck, Hutten) emphasized the Germanness of the empire by reinterpreting the traditional Translation of Empire, the Germanic migrations out of Germania after Constantine, and the designation of a new national purpose (the protection and expansion of the Church and the faith). They grafted the …

Evolving An Accelerated School Model Through Student Perceptions And Student Outcome Data, Donna Braun, Robert K. Gable, Felice D. Billups, Mary Vieira, Danielle Blasczak

Education Department Faculty Publications & Research

A mixed methods convergent evaluation informed the redesign of an innovative public school that uses an accelerated model to serve grades 7-9 students who have been retained in grade level and are at risk for dropping out of school. After over 25 years in operation, a shift of practices/policies away from grade retention and toward social promotion required the school to adapt their model to best served students with high risk factors for dropping out of school who have been socially promoted, rather than retained in grade level. This study provided the qualitative (perspectives of former students (N = 8) …

¡Tigre Blanco, Héroe Del Barrio!: Living And Dying Latina/O In A Superhero World, Luis Saenz De Viguera Erkiaga

World Languages and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications

In a world where the superheroic characters from Marvel Comics and DC Comics, the two major comic book publishers in the United States, are taking over mainstream media via film, TV shows, and video-games, it seems more relevant than ever to look at the way in which these comic book fantasies deal with diversity and the representation of minorities.

Stress Variation As Unifying Features Of Upstate New York, Tracey Vail Jan 2016

Stress Variation As Unifying Features Of Upstate New York, Tracey Vail

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This study investigates sociophonetic stress variation in the Onondaga County area of Upstate New York. I argue that five variations of stress correlate to factors of age, education level, place of residence, frequency, and analogical change. Dinkin and Evanini (2010) have examined and discovered similar outcomes of stress variation in his work with dialectal features across the state of New York. Rather than analyze the state and its borders in their entirety, I focus on morpheme-specific analogical change of stress in specific social categories within the Syracuse, New York region. In terms of lexical items, I analyze stress placement within …

Transnationalism And Nostalgia: Gianfranco Pannone’S ‘Trilogy Of America’, Simone Brioni Dr. Jan 2016

Transnationalism And Nostalgia: Gianfranco Pannone’S ‘Trilogy Of America’, Simone Brioni Dr.

Department of English Faculty Publications

The article examines Gianfranco Pannone’s ‘American Trilogy’ – Piccola America. Gente del Nord a Sud di Roma/‘Little America. People from the North to the South of Rome’ (1991), Lettere dall’America/‘Letters from America’ (1995) and L’America a Roma/‘America in Rome’ (1998) – showing how the trilogy employs the documentary genre not only as a way to inform the audience, but to question the way in which imagination shapes reality and vice versa. First, Lettere dall’America is examined in light of the topos of letter writing in other literary and cinematic works featuring the Italian emigration to the United States. Second, the …

Linguistic Landscape: History, Trajectory And Pedagogy, Thom Huebner Jan 2016

Linguistic Landscape: History, Trajectory And Pedagogy, Thom Huebner

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Language as it appears in the public space, often referred to as "linguistic landscape," has been the object of serious academic study for over a decade, resulting in several singled-authored and edited volumes, numerous articles in international journals, theses, dissertations, eight international workshops on four continents and at least one dedicated web site. In Asia, studies have been conducted in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Malaysia, among other countries. A 515 item bibliography compiled by Chula alum Robert Troyer can be found at www.zotero.org > groups > linguistic landscape bibliography. Increasingly, researchers have explored the relationship between linguistic landscape and education, both …

Chinatown In Bangkok: The Multilingual Landscape, Hongmei Wu, Sethawut Techasan Jan 2016

Chinatown In Bangkok: The Multilingual Landscape, Hongmei Wu, Sethawut Techasan

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper examines the linguistic landscape (shop names) of Chinatown in Bangkok, a prosperous minority language (Chinese) community of diverse commercial establishments. Informed by an ethnographic framework, it explores the preservation of Chinese language and culture under the circumstance of language contact with Thai, the majority language, and globalization influence of English. Unsurprisingly, the inherited Chinese language (dialects as Teochew or Cantonese) was lost in the 2nd or 3rd generation of the Chinese descendants in Chinatown. However, the shop names suggest that in part because of its commodifying value and cultural awareness of the current proprietors, the Chinese shop owners …

A Linguistic Landscape Study Of Advertising Signage On Skytrain, Kritnucha Sutthinaraphan Jan 2016

A Linguistic Landscape Study Of Advertising Signage On Skytrain, Kritnucha Sutthinaraphan

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The aim of this study is to examine to what extent and in what ways Thai and other languages, especially English, are used in the rapid transit system in Thailand and to describe the bilingual strategies used. The data were collected through photographs of advertising signage in the BTS2 Skytrain system and open-ended interviews. Three stations, Mochit, Payathai and Siam, were selected to be analyzed. The results revealed that the majority of the signs (65%) are in bilingual Thai and English by script. On the whole, the Thai language is used for informational purpose, while English is used for symbolic …

Devising Performance & Queer Futurity, Brendan F. Leonard Jan 2016

Devising Performance & Queer Futurity, Brendan F. Leonard

Honors Theses

This project argues that devising performance is an inherently queer and utopian form. In response to recent political movements, such as Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter, which seek to stage dissatisfaction with the systems of late capitalism, I turn to devising performance as a site. Informed by the queer and performance theories of Jose Esteban Munoz, Lee Edelman, and Jill Dolan, I argue that devised theater allows us to process disillusionment, rehearse collectivity, and stage futurity. In conversation with Munoz, I define futurity as an imaginative site that considers what will follow what some scholars suggest will be …

"If You Want Sense, You'll Have To Make It Yourself": Language, Adaptation, And The Myth Of Visual Nonsense, Dianna M. Bellian Jan 2016

"If You Want Sense, You'll Have To Make It Yourself": Language, Adaptation, And The Myth Of Visual Nonsense, Dianna M. Bellian

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between language and image in Nonsense texts through analysis of illustrations, animations, and live-action portrayals of scenes from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth, and their adaptations. This study proceeds by first discussing the discrepancies between various definitions of the critical term "nonsense" as applied to a genre of literature, then moves on to critique the established term of "visual nonsense" as used within the discourse community. The analysis of word-image relationships in the sample texts …

Intersections Of Space, Movement, And Diasporic Subjectivity In Brick Lane, White Teeth, And Maps For Lost Lovers, Md. Alamgir Hossain Jan 2016

Intersections Of Space, Movement, And Diasporic Subjectivity In Brick Lane, White Teeth, And Maps For Lost Lovers, Md. Alamgir Hossain

Masters Theses

This thesis explores the correlations between characters' encounters with specific locations and their interior development as they adjust to their new environments in the novels Brick Lane (2003), White Teeth (2000), and Maps for Lost Lovers (2004). Monica Ali's Brick Lane focuses on Nazneen's (the protagonist) encounters with different places such as particular streets, pubs, restaurants, cafés, and train stations, which impact her personality to such an extent that, in the process of traversing London's physical terrain, she is transformed from a passive Bangladeshi rural woman into an active, independent agent in London. In With Teeth, Zadie Smith depicts …

The Quotidian In Naguib Mahfouz’S The Cairo Trilogy, Kenneth Strickland Jan 2016

The Quotidian In Naguib Mahfouz’S The Cairo Trilogy, Kenneth Strickland

Masters Theses

Naguib Mahfouz said that his primary concern in writing was freedom. This study defines the Quotidian as Naguib Mahfouz uses the concept in his seminal work, The Cairo Trilogy to reveal changes in characters’ subjectivities as they gain access to freedom. Using a Foucauldian theory of power and Homi Bhabha’s Third Space illuminate how freedom emerged as the daily rhythms and accouterments of life changed during the early twentieth century in Cairo. In the novel, characters, whose subjectivities were delimited by imposed strictures, find new opportunities to define reality with some sense of autonomy. The thesis examines the changes in …

To Teach Reading And Writing Well: "Genre Awareness" In Basic Writing, Tara Peck Jan 2016

To Teach Reading And Writing Well: "Genre Awareness" In Basic Writing, Tara Peck

Masters Theses

In this thesis, I argue that a "genre awareness" approach should be implemented into basic writing instruction because it enables students to unpack ideologies and beliefs inherent in genres that basic writing students read and write. Because basic writing students often have little to no prior knowledge reading and writing in academic genres, instructors should teach basic writing students how to broaden their understanding of reading and writing to include readers, writer, context, and text; even more, instructors should teach basic writing students to see the connection between the larger scene and situations in which genres arise. My argument's foundation …

Improving Understandability And Uncertainty Modeling Of Data Using Fuzzy Logic Systems, Dumidu S. Wijayasekara Jan 2016

Improving Understandability And Uncertainty Modeling Of Data Using Fuzzy Logic Systems, Dumidu S. Wijayasekara

Theses and Dissertations

The need for automation, optimality and efficiency has made modern day control and monitoring systems extremely complex and data abundant. However, the complexity of the systems and the abundance of raw data has reduced the understandability and interpretability of data which results in a reduced state awareness of the system. Furthermore, different levels of uncertainty introduced by sensors and actuators make interpreting and accurately manipulating systems difficult. Classical mathematical methods lack the capability to capture human knowledge and increase understandability while modeling such uncertainty.

Fuzzy Logic has been shown to alleviate both these problems by introducing logic based on vague …

If She Isn’T Working Miracles, What Is She Doing On The Battlefield?, Alex Matzke Jan 2016

If She Isn’T Working Miracles, What Is She Doing On The Battlefield?, Alex Matzke

Theses and Dissertations

The images included in my thesis work reflect my experience growing up with military propaganda—pictures of cheerful white women in pearls as part of my rural middle American landscape. I do not name the oppressor because I am not here to pick at the thorns, but to get to the root of the oppression. These are some of the servicewomen I’ve met. Their stories parallel but cannot encompass the private experiences of all service women. I am grateful for their generosity; without them there would be no pictures.

The battle for equality is much older than Rosie the Riveter but …

Cosmopolitanism, Custom And Complexity: Kant's Cosmopolitan Norms In Action, Tracey Leigh Dowdeswell Jan 2016

Cosmopolitanism, Custom And Complexity: Kant's Cosmopolitan Norms In Action, Tracey Leigh Dowdeswell

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

Immanuel Kant's Cosmopolitanism has come to stand alongside Political Realism and Liberal Internationalism as one of three broad theories of ethics in international relations. Yet Cosmopolitanism has been subjected to criticisms that the universal norms identified by Kant - including such norms as hospitality, reciprocity, and publicity (transparency and free political participation) - are Western and Eurocentric in nature, incompatible with cultural pluralism, and lack the justification and legitimacy for the broad-based consensus required for a Cosmopolitan politicalsphere to emerge among the world’s diverse peoples. This paper seeks to address these criticisms of Cosmopolitanism by studying examples of Cosmopolitan norms …

Virtue Pedagogy And International Law Teaching, Hengameh Saberi Jan 2016

Virtue Pedagogy And International Law Teaching, Hengameh Saberi

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

This brief essay draws on the insights of virtue epistemology to argue for an agent-based approach to international law pedagogy. It suggests that pedagogical personae built on epistemic virtues -- including epistemic responsibility -- can best fulfill the promises of critical pedagogy. A virtue account, the essay argues, offers new avenues for a more reflective stance on international law as an intellectual medium through which to relate to the world more responsibly. It does so by shifting the focus from ontology to epistemology; by offering an integrative approach without the moralizing baggage of foundations; by accounting for experience without the …

The Conventions Of Constitutional Amendment In Canada, Richard Albert Jan 2016

The Conventions Of Constitutional Amendment In Canada, Richard Albert

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

Commentators have suggested that the unsuccessful national referendum to ratify the 1992 Charlottetown Accord has created an expectation of popular participation requiring national referendal consultation in major reforms to the Constitution of Canada. In this Article, I inquire whether federal political actors are bound by a constitutional convention of national referendal consultation for formal amendments to the basic structure of the Constitution of Canada. Drawing from the Supreme Court of Canada’s Patriation Reference, I suggest that we cannot know whether federal political actors are bound by such a convention until they are confronted with the question whether or not to …
