Asexuality And Boundaries In Online Discourse, Dominique A. Canning Jan 2016

Asexuality And Boundaries In Online Discourse, Dominique A. Canning

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

In this research, I will analyze the ongoing online discussion about whether or not asexuality "can" or "should" be considered "queer enough" to be included in queer spaces. By combining research based in both discourse analysis and queer theory, this paper offers a unique view not only of asexuality's status in contemporary culture, but also of the way language is used to make statements about who belongs and who doesn't, particularly in online spaces. This work will further explore how ideologies affect the formation of, and discourse between, different groups (van Dijk 2006b: 733-734).

The Impact Of Font Type On Reading, Stephanie Hoffmeister Jan 2016

The Impact Of Font Type On Reading, Stephanie Hoffmeister

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Significant differences in brain activation patterns exist between readers with and without dyslexia (Shaywitz, 1998). One possible area of difference involves font style that has led to the development of specific fonts to help individuals with dyslexia. Recent studies of dyslexia-specific fonts provide no specific evidence that they improve an individual's reading ability or speed of reading.

Courtly Connections: Anthony Sherley’S Relation Of His Travels (1613) In A Global Context, Kaya Sahin, Julia Schleck Jan 2016

Courtly Connections: Anthony Sherley’S Relation Of His Travels (1613) In A Global Context, Kaya Sahin, Julia Schleck

Department of English: Faculty Publications

This article revisits Anthony Sherley’s Relation of his travels into Persia (1613), reading the text within the larger context of early modern Eurasia. It highlights the ways in which at least one European traveler sought and found not alterity, but commensurable structures, social roles, political ideologies, and personal motivations in the Islamic polities to the east and emphasized these connections to his European readers. Furthermore, in making the case that Sherley’s narrative is informed by local actors in Safavid Persia, it maintains that a certain level of Eastern knowledge is present within Western texts from this period and awaits scholarly …

Courtly Connections: Anthony Sherley’S Relation Of His Trauels (1613) In A Global Context, Julia Schleck, Kaya Sahin

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Despite various attempts by literary theorists and historians to find more integrative ways of studying early modern societies and cultures, fairly essentialist notions of the difference between Europe and the rest of the world continue to persist in scholarship. The assumption of fundamental differences then leads to a search for sundry misperceptions, misunderstandings, mischaracterizations, and other skewed representations in early modern texts, particularly in those produced by European travelers. Similarly, studies on cultural, ideological, religious, and intellectual exchanges have not always been able to transcend approaches that solely focus on encounters, a word that sometimes implies haphazard meetings and difficult …

The Search For Agency: Female Sexual Desire In U.S. Sex Education And Coming-Of-Age Cinema, Mckenzi A. Vanderberg Jan 2016

The Search For Agency: Female Sexual Desire In U.S. Sex Education And Coming-Of-Age Cinema, Mckenzi A. Vanderberg

Honors Program Theses

The following essay provides an analysis of the gendered ideologies present in coming-of-age cinema, as well as a critique of heteronormative, patriarchal concepts that hinder female sexual agency and adolescent empowerment. More specifically, this essay will critique the harmful portrayal of female puberty as romantic, passive, and emotional in comedic coming-of-age cinema. This essay will be split into three primary segments. The first segment will consist of a literature review discussing the correlation between sexual desire and autonomy, as well as the importance of portraying female sexual agency rather than passivity in media and sex education curricula, in order to …

Sacred In The City: The Huron Indian Cemetery And The Preservation Laws, John W. Ragsdale Jr Jan 2016

Sacred In The City: The Huron Indian Cemetery And The Preservation Laws, John W. Ragsdale Jr

Faculty Works

The Huron Indian Cemetery sits on a hill above the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers. It is several acres of predominant green, with grass, mature trees, and modest, weathered grave stones, surrounded by the sterile concrete of a struggling Midwestern city. Desultory businesses, colorless governmental offices, a casino, and strong evidence of poverty and vandalism lap at the shores of the small sanctuary. Yet despite the drab and essential joylessness of the encircling faded modernity, the cemetery holds a surprising sense of peace and even timelessness. The serenity may seem incongruous, not only because of the tawdry surroundings, …

“Ni De Aquí, Ni De Allá”: Garífuna Subjectivities And The Politics Of Diasporic Belonging, Paul Joseph López Oro Jan 2016

“Ni De Aquí, Ni De Allá”: Garífuna Subjectivities And The Politics Of Diasporic Belonging, Paul Joseph López Oro

Africana Studies: Faculty Publications

López Oro analyzes two census campaigns—one in New York City and one in Honduras—geared toward Garifuna populations in order to interrogate larger questions about how Garifuna populations are included, or not, within dominant discourses of Honduran multiculturalism and US Latinidad. He argues that Garifuna are a quintessentially diasporic population who disrupt common assumptions about what it means to be Honduran, Latino, and/or Black in the Americas.

Forging A Path For Women's Rights In Customary Law, Tamar Ezer Jan 2016

Forging A Path For Women's Rights In Customary Law, Tamar Ezer

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Common law in Africa began as a dynamic, fluid structure that was effective for governing small, tight-knit communities. After the introduction of European colonialism, however, common law incorporated European customs, such as patriarchy and individualism. The individual and patriarchal structure solidified in many African communities and had a grossly disproportionate effect on women, whose lives were dictated by lack of property rights and self-determination. In South Africa in particular, the patriarchal structure continued into the 20th century despite a global recognition of equal rights for women. This article explores the origins of common law and suggests that many communities may …

Personal Experiences Of A Deaf Law Student, With Updated Foreword, Alice Mcgill Jan 2016

Personal Experiences Of A Deaf Law Student, With Updated Foreword, Alice Mcgill

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This article highlights the author's experience as a deaf individual. What began as a challenge in law school became a greater challenge in the legal profession. However, the author highlights, with the passage often American Disabilities Act, that legal landscape has changed drastically in both positive and negative ways. With new technology, new types of discrimination, and new forms of education, the author notes how much her life has changed since law school and how she has become to appreciate the Deaf community in new ways.

Examining Affective And Cognitive Discourse At The Time Of Ipo: Effects On Underpricing And The Moderating Role Of Entrepreneurial Orientation, William Wales, Fariss-Terry Mousa Jan 2016

Examining Affective And Cognitive Discourse At The Time Of Ipo: Effects On Underpricing And The Moderating Role Of Entrepreneurial Orientation, William Wales, Fariss-Terry Mousa

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This study presents evidence concerning the effects of affective and cognitive rhetoric on the underpricing of firms at the time of their initial public offering. It is suggested that firms that use less affective, and more cognitively oriented discourse in their IPO prospectus will experience better underpricing outcomes. We examine these assertions using a sample of young high-tech IPO firms where investors rely on prospectuses as accurate and informative firm communications. Results from a robust five-year time span observe initial support for the hypothesized effects. Moreover, the signaling of a higher degree of entrepreneurial orientation in the firm prospectus is …

Cross–Cultural Generalizability Of The Alternative Five–Factor Model Using The Zuckerman–Kuhlman–Aluja Personality Questionnaire, Jérôme Rossier, Anton Aluja, Angel Blanch, Barry Oumar, Adam W. Stivers Jan 2016

Cross–Cultural Generalizability Of The Alternative Five–Factor Model Using The Zuckerman–Kuhlman–Aluja Personality Questionnaire, Jérôme Rossier, Anton Aluja, Angel Blanch, Barry Oumar, Adam W. Stivers

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Several personality models are known for being replicable across cultures, such as the Five–Factor Model (FFM) or Eysenck's Psychoticism–Extraversion–Neuroticism (PEN) model, and are for this reason considered universal. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the cross–cultural replicability of the recently revised Alternative FFM (AFFM). A total of 15 048 participants from 23 cultures completed the Zuckerman–Kuhlman–Aluja Personality Questionnaire (ZKA–PQ) aimed at assessing personality according to this revised AFFM. Internal consistencies, gender differences and correlations with age were similar across cultures for all five factors and facet scales. The AFFM structure was very similar across samples and can …

Cultural Diversity Professional Development For Teachers: A Research Brief, Samantha Hope, David Naff Jan 2016

Cultural Diversity Professional Development For Teachers: A Research Brief, Samantha Hope, David Naff

MERC Publications

Many regions of the United States have experienced rapid shifts in the racial and ethnic makeup of the population over the past decade. As a result, many of the nation’s schools have undergone significant changes in student demographics. This includes growth in the numbers of Asian, Hispanic, and multi-racial students.1 Regionally, enrollment data reflect this demographic change (figure 1). It is also worth noting that these demographic changes are more dramatic in some schools and communities than others. Aggregate data for the region shows the largest growth in the population of Hispanic students, which increased from 2.98% of the population …

Polemics And Patronage In The City Of Victory, Valerie Stoker Jan 2016

Polemics And Patronage In The City Of Victory, Valerie Stoker

Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff

How did the patronage activities of India’s Vijayanagara Empire (c. 1346–1565) influence Hindu sectarian identities? Although the empire has been commonly viewed as a Hindu bulwark against Islamic incursion from the north or as a religiously ecumenical state, Valerie Stoker argues that the Vijayanagara court was selective in its patronage of religious institutions. To understand the dynamic interaction between religious and royal institutions in this period, she focuses on the career of the Hindu intellectual and monastic leader Vyasatirtha. An agent of the state and a powerful religious authority, Vyasatirtha played an important role in expanding the empire’s economic and …

Assessing Cultural Competence In Nursing Students At A Small Private Liberal Arts University, Mikah K. Barrueta Ms Jan 2016

Assessing Cultural Competence In Nursing Students At A Small Private Liberal Arts University, Mikah K. Barrueta Ms

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Appropriate care across cultures can occur only when patient, family, and community expectations are aligned with provider knowledge, attitude, and behavior (Doorenbos et al, 2005). Because nurses treat patients from all types of backgrounds, a culturally competent approach should and must be used when educating and training future nurses. The purpose of this study is to assess various cultural competence components of senior nursing students at a small Midwestern University. In order to assess this sample population, two peer-reviewed surveys were chosen; the Quality and Culture Quiz and the Affective Racial Attitudes subscale from the Quick Discrimination Index. Three more …

The Contribution Of Call To Advanced-Level Foreign/Second Language Instruction, Jack Burston, Kelly Arispe Jan 2016

The Contribution Of Call To Advanced-Level Foreign/Second Language Instruction, Jack Burston, Kelly Arispe

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper evaluates the contribution of instructional technology to advanced-level foreign/second language learning (AL2) over the past thirty years. It is shown that the most salient feature of AL2 practice and associated Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) research are their rarity and restricted nature. Based on an analysis of four leading CALL journals (CALICO, CALL, LL&T, ReCALL), less than 3% of all CALL publications deal with AL2. Moreover, within this body of research, the range of languages involved is very restricted. Three languages, English, German and French, account for nearly 87% of the studies. Likewise, in nearly 81% of …

Forward Progress: A New Pattern Criminal Jury Instruction For Impeachment With Prior Inconsistent Statements Will Ease The Court’S Burden By Emphasizing The Prosecutor’S, 84 Fordham L. Rev. 1455 (2016), Hugh Mundy Jan 2016

Forward Progress: A New Pattern Criminal Jury Instruction For Impeachment With Prior Inconsistent Statements Will Ease The Court’S Burden By Emphasizing The Prosecutor’S, 84 Fordham L. Rev. 1455 (2016), Hugh Mundy

UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship

Due in part to the “difficult-to-follow” instruction, the Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Evidence (“the Advisory Committee” or “the Committee”) is now contemplating the expansion of Rule 801(d)(1)(A) to allow for the substantive admissibility of all prior inconsistent statements. While a revised rule would obviate the need for a limiting instruction, the change would enable federal prosecutors to offer out-of-court statements of tenuous reliability as proof against criminal defendants. A more just approach lies in a recrafted jury instruction—one which frames the admissibility of prior inconsistent statements in terms of the prosecutor’s burden of proof.

In this Article, …

Aspects That Affect Whole Number Learning: Cultural Artefacts And Mathematical Tasks, Veronica Sarungi Jan 2016

Aspects That Affect Whole Number Learning: Cultural Artefacts And Mathematical Tasks, Veronica Sarungi

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

In this chapter, discussion of key socio-cultural aspects that affect learning will be considered from two complementary perspectives:

• Aspects that may help learning, especially if adequately exploited by the teacher. • Aspects that may hinder learning, especially if not adequately contrasted by the teacher.

Thirteen papers written by authors from ten countries were accepted for Theme 3. For presentation and discussion, the papers accepted for Theme 3 were divided into subgroups according to their main focus. We are aware that it is not possible to make distinct groups of papers as there are several overlaps in the classification, but …

Pisa For Development Technical Strand A: Enhancement Of Pisa Cognitive Instruments, Ray J. Adams, John Cresswell Jan 2016

Pisa For Development Technical Strand A: Enhancement Of Pisa Cognitive Instruments, Ray J. Adams, John Cresswell

OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)

The OECD is planning to enhance existing PISA assessment instruments in reading, mathematics and science so that they will be more suitable to the context of developing countries. The main purpose of this paper is to identify the main technical issues associated with this aim. The paper reports detailed analysis of the existing PISA item pool and its suitability for countries which have students of average limited capacity. The paper cautions that the fit of developing country data to the PISA model is not good and that modifications to address some of the deviations should be explored. The use of …
