Arts Integration And Student Achievement, Sheryl Denise Ray Jan 2016

Arts Integration And Student Achievement, Sheryl Denise Ray

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract This is a quantitative cross sectional survey design dual method study to test a theory that relates arts integration to achievement for students in grades two through six at three arts magnet schools and five non-arts schools in two school districts in Minnesota. Demographic groups studied included special education, ethnicity, socioeconomic status (FR), Limited English Proficiency (LEP), gender, and gifted. The dual design method included the use of cross tabulations, chi-square tests, MAP RIT results, and teacher practice survey responses to find relationships. Oreck’s (2000) Teaching with the Arts Survey (TWAS) was examined and used as a resource to …

A Case Study Of How Teacher Preparation Programs In Minnesota Are Preparing Elementary Teachers To Work With English Learners, Sarah Lynn Stay Jan 2016

A Case Study Of How Teacher Preparation Programs In Minnesota Are Preparing Elementary Teachers To Work With English Learners, Sarah Lynn Stay

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the population of English Learners in mainstream classrooms across the United States continue to increase, it is critical that all classroom teachers (not just English language specialists) take responsibility for and are adequately prepared for working with and educating ELs. The exponential growth of culturally and linguistically diverse students in the public school system raises important questions about teacher preparation. Since academic achievement in elementary school directly correlates to high school graduation rates, it is critical to examine current teacher education programs and the opportunities within these programs that provide an understanding of EL needs. This study will examine …

The “Recursive Cosmosis” Model: South African Women In Higher Education Finding Strength And Resilience, Claude-Helene Mayer, Sabie Surtee

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This study investigates how the concepts sense of coherence and spirituality are inter-related and contribute to the health and wellbeing of 13 women working in South African higher education institutions. Drawing from Antonovsky’s work on salutogenesis data are analyzed in terms of three sub-components, namely, manageability, comprehensibility, and meaningfulness. Interview data on manageability point to an action component where the pursuit of work-life balance is uniquely experienced by women, not only as a challenge, but is also actively pursued as a strength resource. On comprehensibility, the data captured women’s attitudes in terms of being realistic and understanding of others and …

A Critical Policy Analysis Of Texas’ Closing The Gaps 2015, Katherine Cumings Mansfield, Stefani Thachik Jan 2016

A Critical Policy Analysis Of Texas’ Closing The Gaps 2015, Katherine Cumings Mansfield, Stefani Thachik

Educational Leadership Publications

This critical policy analysis uses critical race theory to provide a counter narrative to the P-16 initiative in Texas known as Closing the Gaps 2015. Findings indicate that while these reforms aim to increase educational access and achievement for people of color, they fall short of addressing systemic inequities such as enduring segregation and unconstitutional school finance policy. Using Texas as a case study illumines the ways the growing number of P-16 councils throughout the US might adapt and improve policy development and implementation to more adequately address educational inequities across racial, ethnic, and linguistic groups. The article closes …

Revisiting Ethnic Conflict In Sri Lanka Through Media And Literature, Archana Arul, Sridhar Krishnaswami Jan 2016

Revisiting Ethnic Conflict In Sri Lanka Through Media And Literature, Archana Arul, Sridhar Krishnaswami

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The brutal twenty six year old ethnic strife in Sri Lanka came to a painful end in May 2009. Five years down the line questions are still being raised on what precisely it was that tore apart the Island Nation—a crisis of identity, lack of assimilation of the so-called migrants, majoritarianism or simply a nation so engrossed in cultural supremacy that it could not care for its minorities? Worse of all, the political leadership in Sri Lanka seems to be in a denial concerning what took place towards the end of the conflict, hence making it appear as one of …

Othello, “Dull Moor” Of Cyprus: Reading Racial Trauma And War Trauma, Abolfazi Ramazani, Naghmeh Fazlzadeh

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

In 1980, American Psychiatrists Association announced that trauma is a mental disorder under the term of PTSD. By that time, trauma became a popular field of study for the literary scholars specially literary critics such as Cathy Caruth, as it offered new insights into traditional literary criticism. The increase of psychological and physical violence all over the world, in the last twenty years has made trauma and witness inevitable realities of life. The evident role of “testimony” and “talking cure” had already been demonstrated by scholars such as Sigmund Freud; but then it has become clear that literature can reflect …

The Effect Of Portfolio Assessment On General English Learners’ Locus Of Control And Achievement, Majid Elahi Shirvan, Seyyed Ehsan Golparvar Jan 2016

The Effect Of Portfolio Assessment On General English Learners’ Locus Of Control And Achievement, Majid Elahi Shirvan, Seyyed Ehsan Golparvar

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Portfolio assessment as an alternative to assessing L2 competence is an interesting endeavour in Applied Linguistics. Previous research has shown that portfolio assessment impacts learning as well as certain psychological constructs. One important factor which is related to success in learning a language is Locus of Control (LOC) introduced by Rotter (1954). Previous research has shown that EFL learners’ achievement is partially related to their LOC. However, the effect of types of assessment on General English (GE) students’ LOC has scarcely been examined within General English context. This study aimed to find out the effects of portfolio assessment on the …

A Study On The Input Modality Of L2 Literary Adaptations And Cross-Cultural Sensitivity, Zari Saeedi, Javad Ahmadi Fatalaki, Ehsan Amini

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Every interaction at the supranational level is, to a greater extent, contingent upon the individuals’ mutual understanding. In this sense, the knowledge of the target culture’s norms in interpersonal relationships is of utmost significance. Although scholars in applied linguistics and trans-disciplinary social studies admit the culture’s outstanding roles in multicultural communities, there is no extensive consensus, to date, over the integration of culture into the language instruction due to its multidimensional aspects. The current study investigated the role of the media density in the enhancement of the intercultural sensitivity. To this end, 41 male and female EFL students with the …

Acquisition Of Spatial Adjectives In The Case Of A Four- Year-Old Child Knowing Azerbaijani Turkish, English And Farsi: A Case Study Of Multilingualism, Mostafa Shahiditabar Jan 2016

Acquisition Of Spatial Adjectives In The Case Of A Four- Year-Old Child Knowing Azerbaijani Turkish, English And Farsi: A Case Study Of Multilingualism, Mostafa Shahiditabar

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This study aims at investigating the acquisition of spatial adjectives in a four-year-old multilingual child speaking Azerbaijani Turkish, English and Farsi. The subject of the current study has been exposed to the mentioned languages from birth. The opposite game is played for the elicitation of the adjectives. The results show that the child's answers are not the same in the three languages. For instance, he could produce kiçik for low in Azerbaijani Turkish but he could not produce the same adjective in English nor Farsi. Furthermore, the results of the current research do not completely agree with Clark (Clark, 1972)'s …

Neural Processing Of Emotional Musical And Nonmusical Stimuli In Depression, Rebecca J. Lepping, Ruth Ann Atchley, Evangelia Chrysikou, Laura E. Martin, Alicia A. Clair, Rick E. Ingram, W. Kyle Simmons, Cary R. Savage Jan 2016

Neural Processing Of Emotional Musical And Nonmusical Stimuli In Depression, Rebecca J. Lepping, Ruth Ann Atchley, Evangelia Chrysikou, Laura E. Martin, Alicia A. Clair, Rick E. Ingram, W. Kyle Simmons, Cary R. Savage

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Background Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and striatum are part of the emotional neural circuitry implicated in major depressive disorder (MDD). Music is often used for emotion regulation, and pleasurable music listening activates the dopaminergic system in the brain, including the ACC. The present study uses functional MRI (fMRI) and an emotional nonmusical and musical stimuli paradigm to examine how neural processing of emotionally provocative auditory stimuli is altered within the ACC and striatum in depression.

Method Nineteen MDD and 20 never-depressed (ND) control participants listened to standardized positive and negative emotional musical and nonmusical stimuli during fMRI scanning and gave …

Domestic Violence In Australia's Cald Communities: Association Between Demographics Of Frontline Workers And Selected Therapeutic Approaches, O Dedeigbo, E Cocodia Jan 2016

Domestic Violence In Australia's Cald Communities: Association Between Demographics Of Frontline Workers And Selected Therapeutic Approaches, O Dedeigbo, E Cocodia

Arts Conference Papers

Similar to the global scenario, domestic violence (DV) is a public health problem even in Australia. Although the mental health effects of domestic violence are well established, there is a dearth of literature about the demographic characteristics of frontline workers and their preference of therapeutic approaches in engaging with victims of domestic violence from Australia’s Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities. Data was collected about the demographics and preference for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Person Centred Therapy (PCT) therapeutic approaches from a sample of N=60 frontline workers associated with medical organisations in New South Wales (Australia). A MANOVA was …

Bicultural Competence And The Latino 2.5 Generation: The Acculturative Advantages And Challenges Of Having One Foreign-Born And One U.S.-Born Parent, Jessica M. Dennis, Ana Laura Fonseca, Guadalupe Gutierrez Ramirez, Jillian Shen, Sibella Salazar Jan 2016

Bicultural Competence And The Latino 2.5 Generation: The Acculturative Advantages And Challenges Of Having One Foreign-Born And One U.S.-Born Parent, Jessica M. Dennis, Ana Laura Fonseca, Guadalupe Gutierrez Ramirez, Jillian Shen, Sibella Salazar

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

The 2.5 generation refers to individuals who have one parent born in the United States and one born in another country. The presence of both native-born and foreign-born parents has the potential to enhance bicultural adaptation. Across two studies with Latino young adults, we examine the extent to which the 2.5 generation is distinct from members of other generations with regard to cultural orientation, acculturative stress, and parent ethnic socialization. Results suggest that the 2.5-generation individuals report greater native cultural orientation, ethnic identity, and parental socialization compared with third-generation individuals, along with greater American orientation than first-generation individuals. The 2.5 …

Romantic Relationship Experiences From Late Adolescence To Young Adulthood: The Role Of Older Siblings In Mexican-Origin Families, Lorey A. Wheeler, Sarah E. Killoren, Shawn D. Whiteman, Kimberly A. Updegraff, Susan M. Mchale, Adriana J. Umana-Taylor Jan 2016

Romantic Relationship Experiences From Late Adolescence To Young Adulthood: The Role Of Older Siblings In Mexican-Origin Families, Lorey A. Wheeler, Sarah E. Killoren, Shawn D. Whiteman, Kimberly A. Updegraff, Susan M. Mchale, Adriana J. Umana-Taylor

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Youth's experiences with romantic relationships during adolescence and young adulthood have far reaching implications for future relationships, health, and well-being; yet, although scholars have examined potential peer and parent influences, we know little about the role of siblings in youth's romantic relationships. Accordingly, this study examined the prospective longitudinal links between Mexican-origin older and younger siblings' romantic relationship experiences and variation by sibling structural and relationship characteristics (i.e., sibling age and gender similarity, younger siblings' modeling) and cultural values (i.e., younger siblings' familism values). Data from 246 Mexican-origin families with older (M = 20.65 years; SD = 1.57; 50% …

Moving From The Shadows: Shedding Light On Mixed-Citizenship Status Latino Families And Emotional Well-Being—A Mixed Methods Study, Ashley-Marie Vollmer Hanna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Throughout history and in contemporary U.S. society, immigration policies and practices have been laced with racist nativism, benefiting the dominant (white, male elite) society at the expense of Immigrants of Color (Chavez, 2008; Hanna & Ortega, 2016; Huag, n.d.; Ortega, Hanna, & Haffejee, 2014; Pérez-Huber, 2008). Today, Latinos are particularly vulnerable as they are the target of racist nativist immigration policy and practices and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

This dissertation examines the emotional well-being of Latino youths and young adults in mixed-citizenship status families using mixed methods research methodology. The study is informed by Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Latina/o Critical Race …

Living Divided No More: An Exploration Of Authenticity In Philosophically Inspired Schools, Melanie Reiser Jan 2016

Living Divided No More: An Exploration Of Authenticity In Philosophically Inspired Schools, Melanie Reiser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores school authenticity (SA) by conducting research at three philosophically inspired schools. The study investigates consciousness to identity, integrity to that identity, and ascertains characteristics of authenticity across settings through an investigation of the school's congruence between the philosophy and the school ecology. Two frameworks are utilized to explore school congruence. The first framework addresses establishment of identity--the school's attention to and congruence between the philosophy and their identified core educational principles. The second investigates integrity by exploring adherence to identity--in other words, the school's attention to and congruence between educational principles and the school ecology. I explore …

Cultural Sensitivity: Early Career Teacher Beliefs, Espoused Theories, Theories In Use, Michelle Steinberger Jan 2016

Cultural Sensitivity: Early Career Teacher Beliefs, Espoused Theories, Theories In Use, Michelle Steinberger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine early career teacher practice and beliefs about students of color in their classrooms and the relationship between those beliefs and their classroom practices. In this study, seven teachers in the initial five years of their teaching career were interviewed and observed inside of their classrooms using the Quality Responsive Classroom Observation Protocol. The interview questions were developed to look at the beliefs, teacher preparation, and culturally responsive pedagogy of early career teachers. Data was then analyzed using the five tenets of the Critical Race Theory: (1) Centrality of Race and Racism; (2) …

Women Who Kill Women, Rashmi Goel Jan 2016

Women Who Kill Women, Rashmi Goel

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This article focuses on the phenomenon of women who kill women in the context of India’s dowry murders. Killing by females is rare, and killing of other females is rarer still. India’s dowry deaths, where mothers-in-law are, next to husbands, the most accused and convicted, represents a unique opportunity to examine the mechanics around women who kill, especially in the context of a gender violence crime. The article examines both the roots of the dowry system and the current anti-dowry and dowry-violence legislation to demonstrate the implicit and accepted gender inequities within marriage that serve to under gird an overall …

Communication Practices In Technology Companies., Ruth Casey, Marc Gallagher Jan 2016

Communication Practices In Technology Companies., Ruth Casey, Marc Gallagher

Teaching Fellowships

It is contended that the skills or competencies that are required of business graduates by technology companies, range from the ability to communicate complex information about global issues in ways that are accessible to and connect with the general public, to problem-solving and project-based interaction. This represents a shift in the type of communication practice that now characterises the technology company, with its main focus on “agile” frameworks of teamwork. This report examines the context for this development, and explores the role of assessment and pedagogy in preparing the student for these communication competencies, from the perspective of the technology …

Parents And Teachers’ Perceptions And Clinical Diagnosis Of Autism Among White And Non-White Groups, Margaret Gopaul Jan 2016

Parents And Teachers’ Perceptions And Clinical Diagnosis Of Autism Among White And Non-White Groups, Margaret Gopaul

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

The pervasiveness of autism has significantly increased over the past 2 decades with the 2014 Center for Disease Control and Prevention report indicating 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Early intervention is recommended as the most effective treatment approach. Nevertheless, previous research has indicated that White children are diagnosed with ASD about 1.5 years earlier than are Non-White children. A current gap remains in literature regarding ASD and different racial groups, and evidence has been inconclusive regarding disparities in identifying and diagnosing ASD. To fill this gap, this study investigated the relationship between child race, …

Do You Understand? Unsettling Interpretative Authority In Feminist Oral History, Katherine Fobear Jan 2016

Do You Understand? Unsettling Interpretative Authority In Feminist Oral History, Katherine Fobear

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

This article interrogates interpretative authority in feminist oral history through a critical Indigenous lens. I argue that critical Indigenous theory provides a useful and needed understanding of participants’ agency and the active role they have in shaping the research. Feminist oral history as a methodology has a long and well-established lineage of exploring difficult questions of power in the relationship between the researcher and the participants. While many feminist oral historians have actively interrogated issues surrounding power within their own research, there are relatively few works that press beyond looking at the one-sided hierarchical relationship between the oral historian and …

Systematic Replication Of The Effects Of A Supplementary, Technology-Assisted, Storybook Intervention For Preschool Children With Weak Vocabulary And Comprehension Skills, Charles Greenwood, Judith Carta, Elizabeth Kelley, Gabriela Guerrero, Na Kong, Jane Atwater, Howard Goldstein Jan 2016

Systematic Replication Of The Effects Of A Supplementary, Technology-Assisted, Storybook Intervention For Preschool Children With Weak Vocabulary And Comprehension Skills, Charles Greenwood, Judith Carta, Elizabeth Kelley, Gabriela Guerrero, Na Kong, Jane Atwater, Howard Goldstein

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

In 2013, Spencer, Goldstein, Sherman, et al. reported the promising effects of a supplemental, technology-assisted, storybook intervention (Tier 2) containing embedded instruction targeting the oral language learning of preschool children at risk for delays. We sought to advance knowledge of the intervention by replicating it in a new sample and examining children's responses to the narrator's instructional prompts and associations with learning outcomes. Results indicated that children were highly successful in responding with the narrator's task-management prompts (i.e., "turn the page"), particularly after the first book. Children were much less proficient in correctly responding to the narrator's word-teaching prompts (i.e., …

How Roots Do And Don’T Constrain The Interpretation Of Voice, Jim Wood Jan 2016

How Roots Do And Don’T Constrain The Interpretation Of Voice, Jim Wood

Linguistics Faculty Publications

A long-standing issue in syntactic theory, and argument structure in particular, involves the relationship between particular lexical items and the syntactic structures they are embedded in. Lexical roots seem to be choosy about the structures they are able to appear in, but are at they same time very flexible. Complicating the matter further, roots are in some cases able to appear in certain structures only with a certain special meaning. In this paper, I focus on the causative alternation in Icelandic, and propose that we can understand root distribution (the inability of certain roots to appear in certain structures) as …

Core Competencies For Undergraduate Community-Engaged Researchers, Grant Wolfe

Community-Engaged Research Resources

Undergraduate community-engaged research (UCEnR) is a growing trend which VCU has proactively pursued by providing grants for UCEnR projects and assimilating UCEnR into interdisciplinary curricula. However, a definitive sense of core competencies for undergraduate community-engaged researchers has not yet been established. To that end, this literature review answers the question, "What skills should UCEnR students have?"
