The Impact Of The California Drought On Food Security Among Rural Families Of Mexican Origin, Lizette Rodriguez, Marcel Horowitz, Dorina Espinoza, Alberto Aguilera, Adela De La Torre, Lucia L. Kaiser

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Introduction:

The year 2015 marks the fourth year of a drought in California. With no signs of the drought improving, communities in California are left to prioritize their water usage. In the Central Valley, the limited water supply has forced farmers to prioritize on acreage and planting, decisions that trickle down and may impact farmworker families.

Objective:

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of a drought in California on family decision-making and coping strategies in the context of broader community changes affecting rural families of Mexican-origin.

Methods:

This study recruited participants from the Niños Sanos, …

Euscorpius

We describe four new species of buthid scorpions from a single Amazonian locality in Peru, situated at the pre-Andean piedmont: Ananteris ashaninka sp. n., Tityus dillerorum sp. n. (a member of the “melanostictus” species-group), Tityus panguana sp. n. (a member of the “bolivianus” species-group), and Tityus wachteli sp. n. (a member of the “clathratus” species-group). Additional information is given on their taxonomy, distribution, ecology, and reproductive biology, fully complemented with color photos of live and preserved specimens, as well as their habitat.

An Investigation Of The Impact Of Multiple Exposures To New Vocabulary Words Have On Students With Language Processing Disorders, Erin E. Higgins Jan 2016

An Investigation Of The Impact Of Multiple Exposures To New Vocabulary Words Have On Students With Language Processing Disorders, Erin E. Higgins

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research aimed to investigate how fifth-grade students diagnosed with processing disorders best-learned new vocabulary and the role motivation played in success. The district, school, and students were given pseudonyms in order to maintain anonymity. Over the course of three, one-week instructional periods, four students participated in six different oral and written vocabulary activities. They completed an assessment immediately following four days of instruction and again at the end of the study to measure growth in their ability to identify and use the word using a four-point scale. Based on the results of the assessments, they showed …

Almost Again: On The Semantics And Acquisition Of Decomposition Adverbs, Ting Xu Jan 2016

Almost Again: On The Semantics And Acquisition Of Decomposition Adverbs, Ting Xu

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the adverbs ‘again’ and ‘almost’. These adverbs can “look inside” a predicate and modify just the result state. Sentence-final again modifying a complex predicate is ambiguous between a repetitive and a restitutive reading; almost modifying a complex predicate is ambiguous between a counterfactual and scalar reading. Chapter 2 examines you ‘again’ in Mandarin Chinese. Many researchers have argued that the repetitive vs. restitutive ambiguity is derived structurally, with a single ‘again’ attaching to different structural positions. This account is difficult to maintain in Mandarin, however. The adverb you ‘again’ can only occur pre-verbally, which suggests that it …

Parental Directiveness And Responsivity Toward Young Children With Complex Communication Needs, Shari L. Deveney, Cynthia J. Cress, Matthew Lambert Jan 2016

Parental Directiveness And Responsivity Toward Young Children With Complex Communication Needs, Shari L. Deveney, Cynthia J. Cress, Matthew Lambert

Special Education and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to determine if parent responsiveness to their children with complex communication needs (CCN) during naturalistic play changed over an 18-month period and determine if any such changes were influenced by the child’s overall level of receptive and expressive language development, motor development or differing play contexts. This longitudinal information is important for early intervention speech-language pathologists and parents of children with developmental disabilities for whom the use of parent-directed responsivity interventions may be encouraged.

Method: Over an 18-month period, 37 parents of young children who had physical and/or neurological disabilities …

The Regulatory Life Of Threatened Species Lists, Irus Braverman Jan 2016

The Regulatory Life Of Threatened Species Lists, Irus Braverman

Contributions to Books

Published as Chapter 1 in Animals, Biopolitics, Law: Lively Legalities, Irus Braverman, ed.

“The Regulatory Life of Threatened Species Lists” explores a prominent technology for the legal regulation of nonhuman life: the threatened species list. I argue that threatened species lists are biopolitical technologies: they produce and reinforce underlying species ontologies by creating, calculating, and governing the boundaries between various nonhuman species. Such a differentiated treatment of the life and death of nonhuman species through their en-listing, down- and up-listing, multi-listing, and un-listing translates into the positive protection and active governance of such species. Listing threatened species thus becomes a …

State, Waterways And Patriarchy: The Western-Himalayan Legend Of Walled-Up Wife, Mahesh Sharma Jan 2016

State, Waterways And Patriarchy: The Western-Himalayan Legend Of Walled-Up Wife, Mahesh Sharma

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

There are poignant westernHimalayan ballads that narrate the tales of women who were immured at the foot of a waterway (kulh), to ensure a steady supply of water. In this paper we probe how the early legends of walled-up women were linked to state formation and how ruling elites later used such events to move up the social and political ladder. The paper also explores how pervasive the patriarchal hold over the lives of women was, how nuanced was the power of patriarchs, and how death became a spectacle, echoed in the ballads of walled-up wife. The focus is not …

Producing Himalayan Darjeeling: Mobile People And Mountain Encounters, Jayeeta Sharma

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This article explores the social production of Darjeeling through the social and cultural encounters that helped transform a mountain health resort for colonial functionaries into a vibrant Himalayan hub for vernacular modernity and local cosmopolitanism. While Darjeeling’s high-altitude setting inextricably linked it to the intense exploitation of subaltern bodies, it evolved as a dynamic urban locality that offered mobile individuals and groups the opportunity to seek out new livelihoods and realize modernistic aspirations in a transcultural setting.

Emergent Literacy Intervention In First Grade Struggling Readers, Colleen Erin Mcgettigan Jan 2016

Emergent Literacy Intervention In First Grade Struggling Readers, Colleen Erin Mcgettigan

Theses and Dissertations

Because of the documented positive impact of small group intervention on student success, this research investigates the impact of participation in teacher research on emergent literacy intervention grounded in student data. This research focused on exploring how dedicated, meaningful, targeted instruction based on assessment can foster reading readiness and increase reading potential for two low achieving 1st grade students. The research design consisted of student and teacher interviews, diagnostic testing, and teacher journaling. The research inquiry was: 1) What are the effects of intensive small group instruction in phonemic awareness, coupled with deep conversations about culturally responsive literature for struggling …

Will It Change Their Reflection? A Culturally Responsive Reaction To Literacy Failures, Idalis J. Williams Jan 2016

Will It Change Their Reflection? A Culturally Responsive Reaction To Literacy Failures, Idalis J. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

This teacher research study was conducted in a second grade classroom. The teacher set out to find out: What happens when students who are faced with repeated literacy failures receive culturally responsive instruction in place of basic skills instruction? Children that struggle with reading often receive basic skills support as a form of intervention; yet still struggle in reading and other areas of literacy. Students often develop a negative identify of themselves as a reader and this leads to diminish and sometimes a lack of self-efficacy. The students in this study are at risk for falling below grade level in …
