Critiquing Debate, James P. Dimock
Critiquing Debate, James P. Dimock
Speaker & Gavel
Debaters enjoy debating more than debate itself. The closer one gets to be-coming ―"an old debater" (a category to which I will inevitably have to resign myself sooner or later), the more likely we are to find ourselves debating on the side of ―"the way debate used to be" or ―"the way debate is supposed to be." I don‘t malign this seemly inevitable progression or even my place in it. I think the tendency to re-examine ourselves says something about our activity. I enter this debate about debate, I think I should begin by defining my side of the flow, …
Creating Sites For Reasonable Discourse Stasis In Public Deliberation, Aaron Dimock
Creating Sites For Reasonable Discourse Stasis In Public Deliberation, Aaron Dimock
Speaker & Gavel
This paper presents an analysis of stasis as a means for creating common ground between conflicting parties and a guide to judgment in public deliberation. Craig‘s (1989) approach to communication as a ―practical discipline‖ provides the theoretical justification for research that examines the practical communication problems society faces. This paper examines public discourse in the form of arguments before local deliberative bodies, where people are attempting to influence the judgment of the board and the public. Using the methods of a rhetorically informed discourse analysis (see Tracy, 2001 & 2002), this paper examines the formulation, presentation, and reaction to arguments …

The Growth Of A Directed Word Network, A. Ross Eckler
Word Ways
A word network is a set of words and links. Two words are joined by a link if they differ by a single letter. More specifically, this is an undirected work network- one can move along a link in either direction. But what if only one direction is allowed? It is the purpose of this article to show how such a network evolves as one adds words one at a time.

Wellbeing
Compared with the early years and adolescence, young people in their middle years (ages 8-14 years) have received relatively little attention from policymakers other than in the space of academic achievement, where national curriculums have been developed, and a national testing regime is in place. Yet there is growing recognition that this is a critical time when young people experience rapid physical and mental development, in addition to facing a significant transition from primary to secondary school. The Australian Child Wellbeing Project (ACWP) asked young people about their lives and wellbeing during this crucial period. Wellbeing can be seen as …

Word Ways
Every so often a peculiar word makes itself known and invites further investigation. One such recent word is KYBO. New Zealand Scrabble player John Foster brought KYBO to the attention of long time Word Ways contributor Jeff Grant. In turn, Jeff queried it with me. The remainder of this article describes the results of Jeff's and my searches about the word.

Carry On Up The Kybo, John Foster
Word Ways
Recently when talking to Jeff [Grant] I queried the word KYBO which has been with us since the adoption of Collins Dictionary in 2007. I was not challenging its validity but rather the definition which is given as "Australian slang". I pointed out that I had used this word as a child at a YMCA summer camp where it was the official term to be used for the toilet. Jeff is doing further research into the origin of this word but I thought I might relate how I first encountered it and the conclusions that I have drawn as a …

As mean as Mean Streets, Mean Sidewalks shift meaning as words walk sideways and create a new type of lateral thinking. I leave this word dance challenge for a later time and for others. I'm using Mean Sidewalks as an umbrella title for a miscellany of kickshaws I hope will be a semi-regular feature.
