Getting The Picture: Engaging Student Learning Using Pinterest, Jo Koster

Winthrop Conference on Teaching and Learning

In a digital environment, teachers and students have access to a wide variety of material that can be used to create discussion, spark inquiry, and prompt critical thinking. One of the social media tools that can be used for this is Pinterest, a free online visual discovery, collection, sharing, and storage tool that allows users to curate and share information through the creation of visual bookmarks called “boards.” Users can “pin” material to their boards either by linking to other online sites or by uploading materials of their own; boards can be grouped by similar characteristics, themes, events, questions, ideas, …

Interpretations Of Spiritual House In 1 Peter 2:4–10 And Their Implications On The Indwelling Of Divine Presence, Cory Wetterlin Feb 2016

Interpretations Of Spiritual House In 1 Peter 2:4–10 And Their Implications On The Indwelling Of Divine Presence, Cory Wetterlin

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

The person-to-person paradigm of divine presence within the OT, the time of the first advent of Jesus in the NT, and after the second advent of the Jesus in the New Jerusalem poses a question of divine presence for the waiting period in between Jesus ascension and Second Advent. In what way is the Holy Spirit present with the Christian church during this time of waiting? The question for this research is in what way, if at all, does the concept of the spiritual house of 1 Peter address the issue of divine presence? The way in which this research …

The Interplay Between Forms Of Revelation: Implications For Theological Methodology, Andrew Tompkins

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

The interplay between forms of revelation has been a matter of much discussion in theological discourse for many centuries. While this paper is not particularly concerned with the final say on the doctrine of revelation it is concerned with revelation and its relation to theological method. In other words, what is the significance of the various modes or forms that revelation takes in connection with the way theology is approached and done? The thesis of this paper is that God is not limited to one form of revelation, but rather that each revelatory form can and does inform the others …

Incorporating Priors For Medical Image Segmentation Using A Genetic Algorithm, Payel Ghosh, Melanie Mitchell, James A. Tanyi, Arthur Y. Hung Feb 2016

Incorporating Priors For Medical Image Segmentation Using A Genetic Algorithm, Payel Ghosh, Melanie Mitchell, James A. Tanyi, Arthur Y. Hung

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Medical image segmentation is typically performed manually by a physician to delineate gross tumor volumes for treatment planning and diagnosis. Manual segmentation is performed by medical experts using prior knowledge of organ shapes and locations but is prone to reader subjectivity and inconsistency. Automating the process is challenging due to poor tissue contrast and ill-defined organ/tissue boundaries in medical images. This paper presents a genetic algorithm for combining representations of learned information such as known shapes, regional properties and relative position of objects into a single framework to perform automated three-dimensional segmentation. The algorithm has been tested for prostate segmentation …

Expeditionary Blended Learning: New Opportunities And Lessons From The United Kingdom, Ian R. Mcandrew, Indra R. Sinka, Michael S. Wills

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

Recent experiences in live course delivery at ERAU's UK campus, combined with dramatic changes in the operational deployment tempo of US military forces assigned at these bases, creates both challenges and opportunities. Exploiting experiences with blended learning at The Open University, traditional learning at the University of Hertfordshire and other UK universities, and teaching concepts in use within the UK's military staff colleges leads to the proposed "Expeditionary" model for blended learning within the ERAU European Region. This model can deliver enhanced student involvement and increased enrollments, provided suitable changes in ERAU's underlying business model can be made. A Strengths …

Creative Thinking Skills For An Electronic World, Gary Schornack Feb 2016

Creative Thinking Skills For An Electronic World, Gary Schornack

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

To instill creative thinking in students requires a shift in thinking for the faculty, which begins with a shift in their own thinking. The faculty obviously must be a knowledge expert or have a significant level of knowledge. However, to become effective in the classroom the faculty member must develop new creative thinking skills for themselves so they can help students develop those skills. This change requires a new attitude on the part of both the faculty and the students so that they can to expand themselves to meet a higher standard in developing the potential of the mind.

Study Of Dialect Contact And Formation: A Case Study Of Glottal-Initial Verbs In Amman, Jordan, Chase Adams, Kirk Belnap Feb 2016

Study Of Dialect Contact And Formation: A Case Study Of Glottal-Initial Verbs In Amman, Jordan, Chase Adams, Kirk Belnap

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In tandem with Al-Wer’s ongoing Amman Project which discusses the dialect contact and potential for dialect formation in Amman, Jordan, this study seeks to understand the variance of conjugation patterns of the glottal-initial verbs ‘akal ‘to eat’ and ‘axad ‘to take’ based on the ethnic background and generational identity of the individual speaker. This study seeks to isolate a pattern of linguistic focusing and identity formation in third-generation Ammani youth vis-à-vis the phonetic shape (±Yod; /a:/, /o:/) in glottal-initial verbs which could corroborate Al-Wehr’s assertion that there is a new emerging vernacular as opposed to stable variation.

Patient-Provider Interactions In Health Care: Use Of And Attitudes Towards Multilingual Communications, Kyle Baird, Laura Smith Feb 2016

Patient-Provider Interactions In Health Care: Use Of And Attitudes Towards Multilingual Communications, Kyle Baird, Laura Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Previous research has examined the provider-patient relationship and the effect of different first languages and culture on such relationship (1,2,3). Most studies conducted in the United States have focused primarily on the interactions between English-speaking health care providers and Spanish-speaking patients. Such studies found a relationship between quality of communication and quality of care received by patients, (2,3). When the patient is minimally proficient in English the divide increases and patients receive less information. Similarly, the provider’s proficiency in the patient’s language correlates with the quality of communication and care. The purpose of this study was to investigate a broader …

A Quichua Video Dictionary: The Sight And Sound Of Ideophones, Diana Shelton (Née Sun), Janis Nuckolls Feb 2016

A Quichua Video Dictionary: The Sight And Sound Of Ideophones, Diana Shelton (Née Sun), Janis Nuckolls

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Quichua is a branch of Quechua, a group of indigenous South American languages, which is found in Amazonian Ecuador. This language utilizes a type of adverb, called ideophones, which symbolizes sound, motion, and other sensations. Ideophones are often foregrounded with speaker movements and intonation and are therefore difficult to represent in written documentation. Our project aimed to create a video dictionary of Quichua ideophones as a valuable resource for language learners as well as future researchers of ideophones by using various media to demonstrate ideophones’ uses and contexts in reality.

Reexamining Creation: Understanding The Relationship Between The Qal And Piel Uses Of ברא, Juan Pinto, David Seely Feb 2016

Reexamining Creation: Understanding The Relationship Between The Qal And Piel Uses Of ברא, Juan Pinto, David Seely

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The first chapter of Genesis begins with two Hebrew words that have been the focus of much debate among biblical scholars. The second word, ברא , most often translated as created, has a history and nuanced meaning that has proven particularly difficult to pin down. Though it is clear that this verb refers to the act of creation, other places where the same root shows up—and the different meanings given to those other attestations— indicate a subtle connotation in Genesis with a complicated history. A clear, allencompassing etymology for the root has proven elusive.
