English vocabulary development is a key component of language and literacy development for English language learners (ELLs) living in the United States. With the increase in the number of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) with ELLs on their caseloads, it has become increasingly important for SLPs to be able to facilitate vocabulary growth in ELLs. To assist SLPs working with ELLs in schools, the present paper provides an overview of strategies to enhance English vocabulary instruction for ELLs, drawing on evidence from research with both monolingual and bilingual students. Strategies included are: leveraging the native language, teaching comprehension monitoring, embedding instruction in …

Colby Magazine
Go Set a Watchman, Harper Lee’s much-anticipated second novel, has now been released, and among the wide range of first impressions about it is a palpable ambivalence, tending towards hostility, concerning what may be called the moral decentering or collapse of Atticus Finch.

Bilinguals' Emotional Responses In American English And Korean, Jihoon Lee
Community of Scholars Day—Posters
The presenter shares an initial plan for her Independent Study. Lee devised this study to explore linguistic characteristics of English-Korean bilinguals in showing sympathy. This is her second experiment that investigates showing sympathy between American English and Korean inspired by the data-collection method in Panayiotou (2004). The participants are to verbally respond to a same sympathy-enticing scenario in English first and in Korean with a one-month interval. The study aims to examine whether and when they use code-switching, and whether there are frequently used vocabulary or syntactic characteristics in their respective languages. This study may contribute to providing language teachers …

Mobile Banking: The Answer For The Unbanked In America?, Catherine Martin Christopher
Mobile Banking: The Answer For The Unbanked In America?, Catherine Martin Christopher
Catholic University Law Review
In the United States, the poor often lack access to mainstream banking services. Instead, they rely on expensive, poorly regulated alternatives like check cashers, payday lenders, pawnshops, and auto title lenders. These financial products jeopardize poor people’s financial and physical security. In pushing adoption of traditional banking products, both government officials and private enterprise have attempted to craft solutions to the banking access problem, but so far these attempts have fallen short. This Article asserts that mobile banking may be a transformative technology that can significantly increase financial inclusion in the United States.
The Article discusses current statistics and demographics …

Exploring Parent-Teacher Partnerships As Border Pedagogy: Supporting Emergent Bilingual Student Learning, Sandra Mercuri
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
Developed by a bilingual teacher educator in the U.S. working with in-service teachers serving predominantly bilingual students from U.S. and Mexico, this study is uniquely positioned to use innovative research in bilingual teacher education for empowering teachers to develop culturally and linguistically responsive border pedagogies. Specifically, this study explores parent-teacher partnerships as border pedagogy that supports emergent bilingual student teaching and learning. Aimed at disrupting traditional modes of research and practice grounded in monolingualism, this qualitative critical study uses the concept of border pedagogy as a theoretical framework to explore how 16 bilingual in-service teachers enrolled in a master’s program …
A Concomitant Of Conflict And Consensus: Case Of A Chieftaincy Succession In Ghana, Kaderi Noagah Bukari
A Concomitant Of Conflict And Consensus: Case Of A Chieftaincy Succession In Ghana, Kaderi Noagah Bukari
Peace and Conflict Studies
Ghana is often seen as peaceful, but is faced with many chieftaincy conflicts that result mainly from succession to the throne (skin or stool) for traditional political power. Ghana has more than 230 chieftaincy disputes dotted across many parts of the country. However, the Bulsa Traditional Area (Buluk) of Ghana has had a stable and resilient chieftaincy succession despite conflicts arising out of the selection of chiefs. In the selection of chiefs, the adoption of a voting system is said to lead to consensus based decision-making which is largely responsible for the non-violent nature of the Buluk chieftaincy …

The Construction Of Latino Im/Migrant Families In U.S. News Media: Parents’ Responses And Self-Representations, Jason Edward Miller
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Latino im/migrants are often portrayed in negative and stereotypical ways in mainstream U.S. media. This dissertation utilizes Ethnographic Content Analysis to analyze news segments about Latino im/migrants from Fox News, MSNBC and Univisión between 2010 and 2012 and digital storytelling with a group of Latino im/migrant parents in central Florida.
First, I questioned if a Spanish-language news media source constructed Latino im/migrant family-focused stories differently than mainstream English-language sources. Utilizing Critical Race Theory as a theoretical lens, I conclude that English and Spanish-language news stations portray Latino im/migrants in different ways. Fox News portrays Latino im/migrants in a generally neutral …

The Role Of Traditional Knowledge About And Management Of Seaworms (Polychaeta) In Making Austronesian Worlds, Cynthia Twyford Fowler
Faculty Scholarship
This paper discusses how Kodi make their worlds cognitively as well as experientially, and how these worlds relate to sustainability and wellbeing. Kodi construct their cognitive worlds as well as their biophysical landscapes whilst interacting with many other species. This presentation focuses on human-polychaete interactions in order to illustrate world making processes. Seaworm traditions have deep historical roots in Austronesian societies and continue to be crucial for the wellbeing of contemporary communities. World-making processes are evident in what Kodi people say about seaworms and how they move through space relative to seaworms. While Kodi construct time they simultaneously construct space …
Starts And Stops: Multimodal Practices For Walking As A Group In An Augmented Reality Place Based Game, Adam Mcfaul Jones
Starts And Stops: Multimodal Practices For Walking As A Group In An Augmented Reality Place Based Game, Adam Mcfaul Jones
Dissertations and Theses
Augmented reality, place-based games utilize GPS-enabled maps and mobile media recording devices to shift traditional classroom activities into real-world contexts. AR-games for second language learning is a new field of research, and few studies have examined the kinds of face-to-face interactions players engage in during AR-games. Using intensive, multi-camera video data of English language learners playing an AR-game, ChronoOps, this thesis describes how groups start and stop walking during gameplay. The method used is conversation analysis, and this study draws from theories of embodied and distributed cognition, situated learning, and interactional competence Walking to and from various destinations as a …

Implementation Research And Asian American/Pacific Islander Health, Jenny Hsin-Chun Tsai, Shin-Ping Tu, Nancy A. Perrin, Erica S. Breslau
Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal
Numerous barriers prevent the translation of research into practice, especially in settings with diverse populations. Nurses are in contact with diverse populations across settings and can be an important influence to further implementation research. This paper describes conceptual approaches and methodological issues pertinent to implementation research and implications for Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) health research. The authors discussed the values of using theory to guide implementation research, levels of theory that are commonly used in interventions, and decisions for theory selection. They also articulated the shortcoming of randomized controlled trials, the gold standard for testing efficacy of interventions, and present …

Authentic Learning: A Concept Analysis, Gugu Ndawo
Authentic Learning: A Concept Analysis, Gugu Ndawo
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on Saturday, April 9, 2016: Higher education is generally characterised by decontextualised and abstract teaching that do not engage learners in authentic learning. Failure to engage learner nurses in authentic learning leads learners to acquire superficial atomistic learning. This type of instructivistic teaching ignores the integration of theory to practice, and such ignorance makes it difficult for learner nurses to retrieve and use the knowledge when it is needed in real-life contexts. Superficial learning leads to solid, rigid and contextualised knowledge, hence failure to solve problems and make rational decisions in real-life situations. Although authentic learning can be …
