Creating Communities Of Culturally Relevant Critical Teacher Care, Elyse Hambacher, Elizabeth Bondy
Creating Communities Of Culturally Relevant Critical Teacher Care, Elyse Hambacher, Elizabeth Bondy
Education
This article draws on the literature on effective African American teachers of African American students to investigate the enactments of culturally relevant critical teacher care (CRCTC) in two fifth-grade teachers’ (one White and one Black) classrooms in a large, urban school district. Using interview and observation data, the findings illustrate the teachers’ knowledge of potential constraints upon their students’ futures. This knowledge catalyzed their enactment of a particular kind of care designed to prepare their students with the dispositions, knowledge, and skills to construct what Carl Grant has called “flourishing lives.” The teachers’ practices illustrate classroom spaces ripe for high …

Queering The Dick: Moby-Dick As Coming-Out Narrative, Ryan M. Brady
Queering The Dick: Moby-Dick As Coming-Out Narrative, Ryan M. Brady
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Many contemporary critics read Ishmael, Moby-Dick's loquacious narrator, as a queer character. The words homosexual and heterosexual would not be coined until 1868, some eighteen years after the events of Moby-Dick; thus, Ishmael comes of age in a time when there was no language to express or even acknowledge same-sex attraction, and even if there had been, the rigid societal codes that regulated sexuality in the nineteenth century would have prevented him from doing so. Despite these disadvantages, Ishmael, through his "marriage" to Queequeg and, later, his admittance into the queer haven of the Pequod, not only manages to reconcile …
Evidence Based Protocol: Improving Depression Assessments In Primary Care, Katherine E. Hoffhines
Evidence Based Protocol: Improving Depression Assessments In Primary Care, Katherine E. Hoffhines
Master's Projects
Depression is a destructive condition that can have a profoundly negative impact on quality of life, wellbeing, and health (Thase, Stowell, Berry, Mencia & Blum, 2014). Worldwide, depression is the leading cause of medical disability costing the health care system over $210 billion annually (World Health Organization, 2014; Greenberg, Fournier, Sisitsky, Pike & Kessler, 2015). The World Health Organization (2016) estimates depression affects 350 million people of all ages globally. One and three adults in the U.S. will experience a major depressive episode during their lifetime (Kessler, Petukhova, Sampson, Zaslavsky & Wittchen, 2012; Rubin, Ciechanowski, Egede, Lin & Lustman, 2004). …
Subphonemic Sensitivity In Low Literacy Adults, Monica Y.C. Li
Subphonemic Sensitivity In Low Literacy Adults, Monica Y.C. Li
Master's Theses
The link between phonological abilities and reading skills has been well-established in both typical and atypical language development. However, the nature of the phonological deficits in poor readers remains a debated topic. While poor readers have been mostly assumed to have underspecified or “fuzzy” phonological representations (Tallal et al., 1998), the opposite alternative, over-specified phonological representations, has also been hypothesized (Serniclaes, 2006). To examine the two phonological hypotheses, the current study used the eye-tracking paradigm in the study of Dahan et al. (2001) to investigate individuals’ sensitivity to subphonemic information in young adults with a wide range of reading abilities. …
A Comparative Study Of Three Approaches For Enhancing Teaching Knowledge Of Dyslexia, Kayla Steltenkamp
A Comparative Study Of Three Approaches For Enhancing Teaching Knowledge Of Dyslexia, Kayla Steltenkamp
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Teachers are the foundational component of the education system. Annually, they are required to engage in professional development opportunities to expand their knowledge. Since 1985 there has been a profusion of legislative attention to the reading disability dyslexia. Included in legislation is the mandate for teacher training, but there is a lack of research on effective professional development to increase teacher knowledge of dyslexia. This study compared three models of professional development to assess their efficacy in increasing declarative knowledge of dyslexia for elementary general education teachers. The results indicated that the use of simulation training alone was less effective …
“We Believe”: Omnicare, Legal Risk Disclosure And Corporate Governance, Hillary A. Sale, Donald C. Langevoort
“We Believe”: Omnicare, Legal Risk Disclosure And Corporate Governance, Hillary A. Sale, Donald C. Langevoort
Duke Law Journal
The Supreme Court’s decision in Omnicare Inc. v. Laborers District Council Construction Industry Pension Fund presents new challenges for boards of directors. The opinion speaks to whether and when an issuer’s statement of belief can be false or misleading other than by proof that the issuer’s genuine opinion was different from what it stated. Statements of opinion imply something about how the belief was formed, and that process implicates the role of directors as fiduciaries.
This Article uses Omnicare as a starting point for exploring and developing the interplay between disclosure, discourse, and fiduciary duties. Using the lens of corporate-discourse …
Generating Predictive Inferences When Multiple Alternatives Are Available, Edward Andrew Cranford
Generating Predictive Inferences When Multiple Alternatives Are Available, Edward Andrew Cranford
Theses and Dissertations
The generation of predictive inferences may be difficult when a story leads to multiple possible consequences. Prior research has shown that readers only generate predictive inferences automatically, under normal reading conditions, when the story is based on familiar events for which the reader has readily available knowledge about what may happen next, there is enough constraining information in the text so that the inference is highly predictable, and there are few or no alternative inferences available (McKoon & Ratcliff, 1992). However, some evidence shows predictive inferences were generated when the likelihood of the targeted inference was reduced and the story …
The Failure Of Counsel: Curial Corruption In Book Vi Of The Vox Clamantis, Robert J. Meindl
The Failure Of Counsel: Curial Corruption In Book Vi Of The Vox Clamantis, Robert J. Meindl
Accessus
The king's court is the final element in Gower's analysis of the law in Book VI of the Vox Clamantis prior to the speculum principis that is the book's climax. Having discussed the men of law, judges, sheriffs, jurors, and bailiffs in chapters one through six, the poet now finds fault in chapter seven with the various advisers who surround the king for the purpose of providing him useful counsel in governing the realm. They, too, are found wanting in an analysis of the current situation in England.

The Wu Ming Foundation: A Collective Approach To Literature, Art, And Politics In 21st Century Italy, Melina A. Masterson
Doctoral Dissertations
The early 1990s marked a shift in modern Italian history with the advent of the Second Republic and the arrival of Silvio Berlusconi on the political and cultural scene. Berlusconi’s almost complete control of the country’s media, in addition to his political power as center-right prime minister, presented a unique challenge not only to democracy in general but to Italian culture in particular. It was in this context that Wu Ming, an ‘anonymous’ Bolognese writing collective emerged. In this study, I will argue that the group is both a unique product of and response to the period of 1993-2016, which …

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
This paper is an analysis of chronotopes in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that reveals how the procedurality of video games might suggest a refined heteroglossic form. Synthesizing contemporary american philosopher Ian Bogost’s concept of procedural rhetoric with the materialist linguistic theory of Mikhail Bakhtin, this ultimately hypertextual and interactive article reflects on language as Bakhtin once did: as "agent and agency” (MPL 146). After detailing how the three major processes of the game coordinate spacetime, it is necessary to conclude that its kaleidoscopic nature provides new opportunities for the rendering of the geometry of thought in what is a …

“I Know You Want It”: Teaching The Blurred Lines Of Eighteenth-Century Rape Culture, Emily J. Dowd-Arrow, Sarah R. Creel
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
“‘I Know You Want It’: Teaching the Blurred Lines of Eighteenth-Century Rape Culture” is a collaborative pedagogical article that addresses the problem of so-called “post-feminism” in the contemporary college classroom by way of a comparative approach to eighteenth-century literature. Specifically, we contextualize and compare the early and late work of Eliza Haywood with current cultural debates and events in order to demonstrate not only the relevance of Haywood and eighteenth-century writers like her, but the importance of continuing the feminist conversation. The article provides texts, readings, and discussion points for consideration, as well as links to relevant contemporary issues and …

TG/TS individuals often face discrimination when seeking health care services such as provider judgment. Further, TG/TS individuals may be unaware of culturally competent service providers or the range of services that exist to aid them in their transition. Through extensive review of the literature, these issues will be highlighted in the coming pages to help future clients and clinicians gain the information necessary to obtain and provide effective interventions, respectively.

Leveraging Biometrics For Insider Misuse Identification, A Alruban, N Clarke, F Li, S Furnell
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Insider misuse has become a real threat to many enterprises in the last decade. A major source of such threats originates from those individuals who have inside knowledge about the organization’s resources. Therefore, preventing or responding to such incidents has become a challenging task. Digital forensics has grown into a de-facto standard in the examination of electronic evidence, which provides a basis for investigating incidents. A key barrier however is often being able to associate an individual to the stolen data—especially when stolen credentials and the Trojan defense are two commonly cited arguments. This paper proposes an approach that can …

Leveraging University-School District Research Partnerships: Exploring The Longitudinal Effects Of An Early Kindergarten Transition Program, Beth Tarasawa, Nicole C. Ralson, Jacqueline Waggoner
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
With increasingly tight budgets, many public school districts lack research personnel to evaluate program efficacy or investigate best practices that raise student achievement. We highlight an example of a successful university-district partnership that offers district-driven research support while providing opportunities for practitioner-scholars to learn first-hand how to perform rigorous evaluation work. This article details the Early Kindergarten Transition program evaluation study conducted by a university-district partnership as well as testimony from district leadership on the utility of the research deliverables and long-term benefits of the research collaboration.

Pathways To A Brighter Future: Narratives Of Latino Students’ Perceptions At Community College, Columba Myra Gaytan-Morales
Pathways To A Brighter Future: Narratives Of Latino Students’ Perceptions At Community College, Columba Myra Gaytan-Morales
Theses and Dissertations
Helping Latino students into leadership roles begins with a college experience. Latino students are the largest and fastest growing student population within community colleges, yet they are less likely to graduate. Blame is often placed on minority students and their families for the students’ poor academic performance. Deficit thinking models have impacted this way of thinking and this adds to the variety of factors that prevent students’ from successfully completing a college degree. An analysis of nine Latino students’ college experiences was examined to determine the types of barriers that were evident. Critical Race Theory and Latino Critical Race narrative …

Minding The Pedagogical Gap: Creative Writing Studies, Common Core Standards, And The Secondary Creative Writing Moment, Chris Drew
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
Although the Common Core Standards in English/Language Arts seem to exclude creative writing activities and lessons from secondary classrooms in favor of literary analysis and composition, current creative writing pedagogy demonstrates that such a reading of the standards is shortsighted and incorrect. By analyzing thematically-grouped standards and citing relevant creative writing pedagogues, this article argues that a majority of Common Core ELA Standards can be met by utilizing creative writing activities in the secondary classroom and that a critical moment has been reached for creative writing scholars to ensure their discipline is represented in secondary English curricula and training.

Measuring Writing Engagement And Emotional Tone In L2 Creative Writing: Implications For Interdisciplinarity, Justin Nicholes 5361162
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
In response to calls for systematic exploration of the creative writing field, this study employed a quantitative design to address two research questions: Do second language (L2) writers who enjoy creative writing in English feel different levels of narrative-writing engagement between autobiographical and critical consciousness-raising creative writing? and Does autobiographical creative writing evoke a different emotional tone from critical consciousness-raising creative writing? Statistical and computational-linguistic analysis of short story and survey data of 30 multilingual creative writers at one U.S. public university answered each question. The data presented show narrative-writing engagement for autobiographical creative writing (M = 5.35, SD …

Learning Language With Technology In A Hybrid University Eap Course, Jerol Brent Enoch
Dissertations
Today’s college campuses are offering increased alternatives to the traditional face-to-face classroom, including hybrid or blended courses that combine online and face-to-face elements. Language learning is no exception. This instrumental case study examines the affordances and constraints of integrating technology into a hybrid language classroom, following one teacher’s construction of an undergraduate, hybrid English for Academic Purpose (EAP) grammar class for ten international students in their first year of study at an American university. Drawing on data from this single classroom case, findings address both the instructor’s and students’ perceptions of course content and delivery, knowledge expression activities, and classroom …
Rewriting The Sentence In First-Year Composition: Pedagogies And Perspectives, June G. Newton
Rewriting The Sentence In First-Year Composition: Pedagogies And Perspectives, June G. Newton
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
Many college students arrive in first-year composition classrooms lacking sufficient sentence-level proficiency. Although syntactically challenged writers are often evaluated harshly in academic, professional, and other writing contexts, sentence-based pedagogies that can help students write more clearly and effectively have been sidelined in composition studies amid grammar debates and theoretical divergences within the discipline. This capstone examines how writing instructors have recognized the rhetorical function of sentence-based pedagogies from the classical era to the present, including those extolled by Robert Connors in “The Erasure of the Sentence”: Francis Christensen’s generative rhetoric, classical imitation practices, and sentence-combining exercises. These methods, used widely …
