PCOM Scholarly Works

We are researchers and clinicians working on Alzheimer's disease (AD) or related topics, and we write to express our concern that one particular aspect of the disease has been neglected, even though treatment based on it might slow or arrest AD progression. We refer to the many studies, mainly on humans, implicating specific microbes in the elderly brain, notably herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1), Chlamydia pneumoniae, and several types of spirochaete, in the etiology of AD. Fungal infection of AD brain has also been described, as well as abnormal microbiota in AD patient blood. The first observations of HSV1 …

The Expression Of Major Histocompatibility Class I And Major Histocompatibility Class Ii On Macrophages In The Presence Of Aryl Hydrocarbon Antagonist (Ch-223191), Caitlin Wilson

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Macrophages are crucial for ridding the body of debris and foreign cells. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) also plays a critical role in immunity. This study examined the effect of the AhR on the expression of major histocompatiability complex class I (MHCI) and MHC class II (MHCII) in two murine macrophage cell lines. This study used Raw264.7 and J774A.1 murine macrophage cell lines. The Raw264.7 cells are from male BALB/c mice while the J774A.1 cells are from female BALB/cN mice. The addition of the AhR anatagonist CH-223191 (AhRa) showed that the AhR does not significantly impact MHCI expression. However, MHCII …

Bluesman, Guitar, And Migration, Yaeko Takada Jan 2016

Bluesman, Guitar, And Migration, Yaeko Takada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project examines how the bluesman, guitar, and migration have interacted with each other and brought about transformations to American popular music, based upon scholarly works, magazine articles, and the sound recordings of the prewar blues performers. In popular theory, the blues sprang out of the cotton fields and articulated the life experiences of the oppressed people in isolated areas, particularly the Jim Crow south. These are certainly truths of the blues. Also true is that the blues was a product of modernization in every way and a representation of the African American bluesman's aspiring life. The bluesman's mobile lifestyle …

Hispanic Agricultural Workers: The Nexus Of Demographics, Employment Characteristics, And Health, Ashley Michelle Bush

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Agriculture, which is home to elevated occupational injury and illness rates, has a substantial demographic makeup of Hispanic workers. Hispanic farmworkers are at increased risk of poor occupational health outcomes due to the precarious nature of work and other socio-ecological influences. These adverse occupational health outcome counts are inadequate and undercounted, failing to capture the true scope of agricultural work. To gain more knowledge about agriculture, this capstone will focus on the personal and work characteristics of agricultural workers to help further understand disparities within the agricultural sector by: providing a literature review of agricultural worker health; examining missed work …

Endohelminth Parasites Of Some Midwater And Benthopelagic Stomiiform Fishes From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Michael J. Andres, Mark S. Peterson, Robin M. Overstreet

Gulf and Caribbean Research

: Mesopelagic fishes represent significant ecological links between mesozooplankton and the larger pelagic squids, fishes, and marine mammals. As such, these fishes also play a significant role as intermediate or paratenic hosts for parasites that require a crustacean intermediate host and mature in marine mammals or pelagic fishes. We examined a total of 208 individuals representing 5 species of Sternoptychidae and 88 individuals representing 2 species of Phosichthyidae from 20 locations in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM). Six of the 7 species we examined are mesopelagic and one species was benthopelagic. We found the larval stages of Anisakis brevispiculata …

A total of 902 participants from the University of Central Florida answered multiple questionnaires via the Sona system. Items in the questionnaires included topics such as demographic variables, social class variables, and items regarding alcohol and substance use in …

The Politics Of Mental Health: A Comparative Study Of Policy Adoption And Implementation In Germany And Japan, Luis Diego Campos Jan 2016

The Politics Of Mental Health: A Comparative Study Of Policy Adoption And Implementation In Germany And Japan, Luis Diego Campos

Honors Undergraduate Theses

In the aftermath of World War II, the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan followed Germany’s blueprint in fashioning a universal health coverage system. Comparisons to Germany’s welfare state during this same time period reveal markedly different social and mental health policy practices, as Germany’s Christian Democratic Union and Social Democratic Party cooperated toward progressive policies while the Liberal Democratic Party largely neglected social welfare expansion. The effect of these practices is reflected in budgetary provisions, institutionalization practices, and mental health epidemiology. This research finds that a favorable economic climate allowed the Liberal Democratic Party to politically isolate the Social Democratic …

Role Of Adrenergic Neurons In Motor Control: Examination Of Cerebellar Purkinje Neurons In Mice Following Selective Adrenergic Cell Ablation In Vivo, Monica Mansour

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase (Pnmt) is the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of noradrenaline to adrenaline. These catecholamines are synthesized in the medulla of the adrenal gland and by some neurons of the central nervous system. The precise location of Pnmt action in the brain and its physiological significance are unknown. Prior studies led by Aaron Owji, a graduate student in Dr. Ebert’s laboratory, showed that mice with selectively ablated Pnmt cells show signs of neurological defects such as abnormal gait, weakened grip strength, lack of balance, reduced movement, and defective reflexes during tail suspension tests.

The cerebellum is a small section of …

Assessment Of Staphylococcus Aureus Genetics: Clinical Versus Community Epidemiology, Matthew Lawrance Jan 2016

Assessment Of Staphylococcus Aureus Genetics: Clinical Versus Community Epidemiology, Matthew Lawrance

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus has an historical relationship with anthropogenic environments, particularly hospitals, where infection characteristics differ from community-acquired disease. This has promoted a designation of strains as healthcare or community associated. Despite this affiliation, genetic approaches have failed to support these groupings. In order to establish the genetic relationship between S. aureus from differing anthropogenic environments, I have analyzed the relatedness between three cohorts of S. aureus: nasal carriage isolates from community participants, infectious isolates from hospitals, and a cohort from an uninvestigated environment, an ambulatory clinic. Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) and Staphylococcus aureus protein a (spa) repeat regions were analyzed …

Mathematical Modeling Of Infectious Diseases With Latency: Homogeneous Mixing And Contact Network, Keith Carlson Jan 2016

Mathematical Modeling Of Infectious Diseases With Latency: Homogeneous Mixing And Contact Network, Keith Carlson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In mathematical epidemiology, the standard compartmental models assume homogeneous mixing in the host population, in contrast to the disease spread process over a real host contact network. One approach to incorporating heterogeneous mixing is to consider the population to be a network of individuals whose contacts follow a given probability distribution. In this thesis we investigate in analogy both homogeneous mixing and contact network models for infectious diseases that admit latency periods, such as dengue fever, Ebola, and HIV. We consider the mathematics of the compartmental model as well as the network model, including the dynamics of their equations from …

Pre-Antibiotic Therapy Of Syphilis, Charles T. Ambrose Jan 2016

Pre-Antibiotic Therapy Of Syphilis, Charles T. Ambrose

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

The explosive increase in syphilis throughout China and Russia during the past several decades represents a global public health threat for several reasons. 1) Most cases are undertreated and thus collectively offer optimal conditions for the emergence of resistant strains of the syphilis spirochete, Treponema pallidum. No penicillin-resistant strains have been recognized to date, but strains resistant to the second line antibiotic agents are now common. 2) The recent discovery of plasmids in T. pallidumraises the likelihood of plasmid transfer from other bacteria of various resistance genes, especially those directed toward penicillin-type antibiotics, currently the drugs of choice for …

Time-To-Detection Of M. Tuberculosis As A Predictor Of Infectivity, Lea Elizabeth Ghee Hamner Jan 2016

Time-To-Detection Of M. Tuberculosis As A Predictor Of Infectivity, Lea Elizabeth Ghee Hamner

Public Health Theses

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) transmission continues to be problematic in the United States. Contact investigations are essential for identifying new infections and must prioritize limited resources by pursuing more infectious cases. Current infectivity measures like sputum smear grade, chest x-rays, and nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) are sub-optimal. Time-to-detection (TTD) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in liquid culture has shown promising results.

OBJECTIVES: Our objective is to examine the relationship between TTD and TB transmission.

METHODS: This study examined a retrospective cohort of pulmonary TB cases with TTD data from 2009-2014 from the King County Laboratory, Seattle, WA. The primary outcome was transmission …

Twenty-First Century Regression: The Disparate Impact Of Hiv Transmission Laws On Gay Men, Siobhán Elizabeth Stade Murillo Jan 2016

Twenty-First Century Regression: The Disparate Impact Of Hiv Transmission Laws On Gay Men, Siobhán Elizabeth Stade Murillo

Emory International Law Review

In this Comment, Siobhán Murillo analyzes United States legislation that criminalizes HIV transmission amongst gay men and compares these statutes to similar ones in Uganda, Australia, and Niger. The Comment discusses the history of HIV/AIDS and the historical discrimination against homosexual men in the United States since states began enacting HIV-specific criminalization laws in the late 1980s. However, these laws fuel the stigma surrounding HIV and disparately impact gay men. Siobhán Murillo explores the more appropriate solution: to create a new model criminal statute that criminalizes the transmission of HIV/AIDS but has stricter intent requirements, a higher level of scrutiny, …
