Warlord: The Political And Military Ambitions Of Nazi Germany, William R. Underhill
Warlord: The Political And Military Ambitions Of Nazi Germany, William R. Underhill
Senior Theses
There are so many important stories to consider when thinking about World War II. It is easy to think about the popular aspects of the war: the causes, the major figures, the battles, and, of course, the lasting consequences. Yet there are other, lesser known storylines to consider, ones that have taken a backseat to the more popular narratives of the time. It is commonly understood that Nazi Germany was evil and that they had nothing but ill intentions for the rest of Europe and the world. However, it is vital to understand that Germany’s pre-war intentions are notably different …

Repetitive genomic regions include tandem sequence repeats and interspersed repeats, such as endogenous retroviruses and LINE-1 elements. Repressive heterochromatin domains silence expression of these sequences through mechanisms that remain poorly understood. Here, we present evidence that the retinoblastoma protein (pRB) utilizes a cell-cycle-independent interaction with E2F1 to recruit enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) to diverse repeat sequences. These include simple repeats, satellites, LINEs, and endogenous retroviruses as well as transposon fragments. We generated a mutant mouse strain carrying an F832A mutation in Rb1 that is defective for recruitment to repetitive sequences. Loss of pRB-EZH2 complexes from repeats disperses H3K27me3 …

Motility And Adhesion Through Type Iv Pili In Gram-Positive Bacteria, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Eric J. Sundberg
Motility And Adhesion Through Type Iv Pili In Gram-Positive Bacteria, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Eric J. Sundberg
Food for Health: Publications
Type IV pili are hair-like bacterial surface appendages that play a role in diverse processes such as cellular adhesion, colonization, twitching motility, biofilm formation, and horizontal gene transfer. These extracellular fibers are composed exclusively or primarily of many copies of one or more pilin proteins, tightly packed in a helix so that the highly hydrophobic amino-terminus of the pilin is buried in the pilus core. Type IV pili have been characterized extensively in Gram-negative bacteria, and recent advances in high-throughput genomic sequencing have revealed that they are also widespread in Gram-positive bacteria. Here, we review the current state of knowledge …

Identifying The Complexity Of Bipolar Disorder, Brandie Marie Stiles
Identifying The Complexity Of Bipolar Disorder, Brandie Marie Stiles
Dissertations
Bipolar disorder is a complex illness that is difficult to correctly diagnosis and treat. Experts estimate that a correct diagnosis and treatment for bipolar disorder may be delayed for up to 7-10 years after symptoms become problematic. The primary purpose of this study was to identify the complexity of diagnosing bipolar disorder, including diagnostic patterns, recommended treatment, and patient response. A focused ethnography, including in-depth interviews and a retrospective chart review, were completed to answer the research questions: 1) What is the nature of the experience of receiving a diagnosis of bipolar disorder? 2) What are the diagnostic and treatment …
Examining Patient Outcomes Of Telemedicine In Rural Emergency Departments, Jessica R. Dalton
Examining Patient Outcomes Of Telemedicine In Rural Emergency Departments, Jessica R. Dalton
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
Increasing shortages of primary care physicians has resulted in the use of family nurse practitioners for staffing of rural Emergency Departments (ED) throughout the United States. Although the majority of these Family Nurse Practitioners have not been formally trained in emergency medicine, they are placed in the role. The specific aim of this study is to examine if using telemedicine in the rural emergency department will improve patient outcomes, decrease transfers, and decrease mortality. This study’s project design is a retrospective chart review of Emergency Department patients at Wilson Medical Center from April 2015 to April 2016 where telemedicine was …
The Persuasive Power Of Video Game Narratives: Addressing Empathy And Attitudes Toward People With Mental Illness, Kristy M. Najarian
The Persuasive Power Of Video Game Narratives: Addressing Empathy And Attitudes Toward People With Mental Illness, Kristy M. Najarian
Master of Arts in Communication
Many college students find themselves struggling with mental health problems (ACHA, 2015). Individuals with mental illness not only battle with the disease, but with the stigma society has developed toward them, leading to a diminished quality of life. Education and contact are two antistigma approaches utilized in this study (Corrigan & Watson, 2002). This thesis aims to understand players’ involvement in the video game narrative (i.e., narrative engagement and transportation) and its relationship with empathy and attitudes toward people with mental illness. As a way to alleviate stigma, college students (N = 97) were surveyed after playing the video game …
Predictive Modeling With The Soil And Water Assessment Tool (Swat2012) Prior To Design Development In Landscape Architecture: Learning From The Southwestern Medical District In Dallas, Texas, Layal Bitar Ghanem
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
Landscape Architecture has recently seen a significant rise in evaluative studies among the scientific and professional community, perhaps as a result of growing concerns related to rapid urbanization, climate change, and environmental degradation (LAF, 2016; Ozdil, 2014). Several methods adopted in evaluative landscape architecture research have typically focused on landscape performance in post implementation conditions, with a relatively superficial use of technology to address contemporary urban problems. However, with the advancement of computer technologies, opportunities to assess and predict environmental landscape performance prior to design development in the site planning process have emerged. The purpose of this research is to …

Introduction
- Over 80% of pregnancies are unintended among women with opioid use disorder (OUD; Heil et al., 2011).
- Use of effective contraception is uncommon in this population (Terplan et al., 2015).
- Initiating and using effective contraception involves delays: to obtain the method from a provider, to become protected after initiating use.
- Interventions that include delay reductions among other elements have increased contraceptive use (Heil et al., 2016; Secura et al., 2014).
- Women with OUD have reported greater likelihood of engaging in unprotected sex at shorter delays to acquiring protection from sexually-transmitted infection (STI) than women without OUD (Herrmann et al., …

Introduction
• Control of the mitochondrial ATP production by SR-derived Ca2+ signals includes local, nanodomain Ca2+ transfer from ryanodine receptors (RyR2) to the mitochondrial matrix (excitation-bioenergetics coupling).
• Ca2+ crosses the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) via the mtCU, a low-affinity Ca2+-activated Ca2+ channel complex.
• The surface area of cardiac IMM is extensively enhanced by cristae folding; however, mitoplast patch clamp studies showed mtCU current density the lowest amongst a range of tissues (Fieni 2012. Nat Commun).

CONTEXT: Recent analyses of epidemiological data including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) have suggested that the harmful effects of obesity may have decreased over calendar time. The shifting BMI distribution over time coupled with the application of fixed broad BMI categories in these analyses could be a plausible "nuisance contributor" to this observed change in the obesity-associated mortality over calendar time.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the extent to which observed temporal changes in the obesity-mortality association may be due to a shifting population distribution for body mass index (BMI), coupled with analyses based on static, broad BMI categories. …

Assessing The Vulnerability Of Fishery Villages Influenced By Climate Change And Anthropogenic Activity In The Coastal Zone Of The Tamsui River, Sheng-Yuan Teng, Ming-An Lee, Jhen Hsu, Tzu-Ping Lin, Yu-Chen Lin, Yi Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Coastal zones located in populated and rapidly developing areas face high risks of natural and anthropogenic disasters. In this study, a framework was developed to determine the indicators of vulnerability to natural and anthropogenic disasters in Chuwei and Tamsui, two northern Taiwanese fishing villages in the coastal zone of the Tamsui River. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) was used to determine the vulnerability indices of the locations, with experts evaluating the weights assigned to a range of criteria, namely hydrological data (such as sea surface temperature and sea level), stakeholder perceptions, and fishery data. These two villages have a considerably …

Guided Medical Data Segmentation Using Structure-Aligned Planar Contours, Michelle Vaughan Holloway
Guided Medical Data Segmentation Using Structure-Aligned Planar Contours, Michelle Vaughan Holloway
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Segmentation of 3D/4D biological images is a critical step for a wide range of applications such as treatment planning, quantitative analysis, virtual simulations, and rendering visualizations. Automatic segmentation methods are becoming more reliable, but many experts still rely on manual intervention which makes segmentation a time and resource intensive bottleneck. Marking boundary contours in 3D images can be difficult when images are often noisy or the delineation of biological tissue is unclear. Non-parallel contours can be more accurate and reduce the amount of marking necessary, but require extra effort to ensure boundary consistency and maintain spatial orientation. This dissertation focuses …
Understanding The Role Of Dynamics In Brain Networks: Methods, Theory And Application, Mohammadmehdi Kafashan
Understanding The Role Of Dynamics In Brain Networks: Methods, Theory And Application, Mohammadmehdi Kafashan
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The brain is inherently a dynamical system whose networks interact at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Understanding the functional role of these dynamic interactions is a fundamental question in neuroscience. In this research, we approach this question through the development of new methods for characterizing brain dynamics from real data and new theories for linking dynamics to function. We perform our study at two scales: macro (at the level of brain regions) and micro (at the level of individual neurons).
In the first part of this dissertation, we develop methods to identify the underlying dynamics at macro-scale that govern brain …
High-Throughput Exploration Of Glass Formation Via Laser Deposition And The Study Of Heterogeneous Microstructure In A Bulk Metallic Glass Alloy, Peter Te-Chuan Tsai
High-Throughput Exploration Of Glass Formation Via Laser Deposition And The Study Of Heterogeneous Microstructure In A Bulk Metallic Glass Alloy, Peter Te-Chuan Tsai
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Bulk metallic glasses are a relatively novel class of engineering alloys characterized by a "disordered" atomic structure devoid of long-range translational symmetry. Compared to crystalline alloys, the confluence of metallic bonding and amorphous structure imbues bulk metallic glasses with a unique set of properties that makes them particularly attractive for a wide variety of structural applications. Such properties include exceptional yield strengths, high elastic resilience, resistance to corrosion, and in particular, the unparalleled ability among metals to be thermoplastically formed across a wide range of length scales when heated above the glass transition temperature. Formation of metallic glass from a …
The Violence Of Abstraction: Learning To Live With Type-2 Diabetes In Everyday Life, Jenny Epstein
The Violence Of Abstraction: Learning To Live With Type-2 Diabetes In Everyday Life, Jenny Epstein
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The impetus for this project grew out of my experience working as a pharmacist in a federally-funded ambulatory-care clinic In Tacoma, WA. Many people seen at the clinic struggled with type-2 diabetes (T2DM) and over time, I began to see this condition not only as a biological disorder, but also as a complex symptom of both macro-level social history and micro-level daily activities. I also began to see how the emphasis on medical abstraction in the form of measuring, monitoring and scheduling into daily routines, while necessary to control T2DM, created a gap between lived experience and the broader social …
New Techniques And Optimizations Of Short Echo-Time 1h Mri With Applications In Murine Lung, Jinbang Guo
New Techniques And Optimizations Of Short Echo-Time 1h Mri With Applications In Murine Lung, Jinbang Guo
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Although x-ray computed tomography (CT) is a gold standard for pulmonary imaging, it has high ionizing radiation, which puts patients at greater risk of cancer, particularly in a longitudinal study with cumulative doses. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) doesn't involve exposure to ionizing radiation and is especially useful for visualizing soft tissues and organs such as ligaments, cartilage, brain, and heart. Many efforts have been made to apply MRI to study lung function and structure of both humans and animals. However, lung is a unique organ and is very different from other solid organs like the heart and brain due to …
The Dynamic Brain In Action: Cortical Oscillations And Coordination Dynamics, Mahmood Hoseini
The Dynamic Brain In Action: Cortical Oscillations And Coordination Dynamics, Mahmood Hoseini
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Cortical oscillations are electrical activities with rhythmic and/or repetitive nature generated spontaneously and in response to stimuli. Study of cortical oscillations has become an area of converging interests since the last two decades and has deepened our understanding of its physiological basis across different behavioral states. Experimental and modeling work has taught us that there is a wide diversity of cellular and circuit mechanisms underlying the generation of cortical rhythms. A wildly diverse set of functions has pertained to synchronous oscillations but their significance in cognition should be better appraised in the more general framework of correlation between spike times …
Structure, Dynamics, And Regulation Of Collective Cell Migration, Andrew J. Loza
Structure, Dynamics, And Regulation Of Collective Cell Migration, Andrew J. Loza
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Collective migration is the process by which cells organize individual motions to productively migrate as a group and plays a fundamental role in organism development, tissue regeneration, and cancer invasion. In development, coordinated migration facilitates the formation of complex organ structures and is required for proper dissemination of neural crest cells throughout an organism. After injury, this process allows breaches in epithelial layers to be repaired while maintaining tissue integrity, and in cancer, collective behavior enhances invasion of tumor cells into the surrounding tissue. Chapter 1 provides an introduction for the role of collective migration across an organism’s lifespan, the …
