From Inaction To Action: The World Health Organisation And Tobacco Control Policies In Nigeria Since 1970, Benjamin Uchenna Anaemene

Journal of Retracing Africa

The need to regulate tobacco usage became internationalized in 1970 following the adoption of a resolution by the World Health Assembly calling on member states to take action in view of its damaging effects. Arising from this, two periods are discernible in the fight against the use of tobacco. The first period is from 1970 to 1995 that was characterized by weak laws which were inconsequential. The second period is from 1996 to date that was marked by multilateral cooperation and effective action at the global level. A glaring manifestation during of the second period is the adoption of the …

Jora: Complete Volume 3, Issue 1

Journal of Retracing Africa

The Journal of Retracing Africa (JORA) is pleased to release its third volume. This volume builds on the foundation of excellence and intellectual rigor evident in the two previous volumes. JORA has remained committed to its mission to deconstruct misconceived, mistaken, and missing narratives on Africa and Africans by providing a holistic appreciation of the African experience. The articles and book reviews published in this volume honor that commitment. They highlight the often overlooked or misunderstood social and economic issues surrounding colonial and contemporary Africa. The implications and ramifications of Africa’s encounters with the West, especially since the 19th century …

Like Disney For Adults: Life In Freedom Village, Janice G. Schuster

Sociology Between the Gaps: Forgotten and Neglected Topics

With an increasingly aging population, American society needs to more effectively address living options for the aging population in the present and future. Older adults have unique needs due to their age, physical and mental condition, varying needs for medical and health care and assistance with their daily activities. Freedom Village is an example of a very successful continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Holland, Michigan. Using a case study approach and structured questions to ask two residents of Freedom Village, her aunt and uncle, over a period of several months, the author learned that they have lived very happily …

Use Of Microplate Respirometry To Measure Respiration Of Individual Adult Coral Polyps Exposed To Deepwater Horizon Oil, Brittany A. Jensen Dec 2016

Use Of Microplate Respirometry To Measure Respiration Of Individual Adult Coral Polyps Exposed To Deepwater Horizon Oil, Brittany A. Jensen

Open Access Theses

The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout of 2010 exposed many coastal and marine ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) to the acute and chronic effects of crude oil. To date, no studies have investigated the toxicity of DWH oil on shallow reef-building corals despite the relative proximity of some reef sites to the DWH (Flower Garden Banks, TX) and the potential for downstream oil transport to other more distant sites (Pulley Ridge and Florida Keys, FL). In this study, we investigated the effect of acute DWH oil exposure on reef corals, both alone and in combination with elevated temperature, to …

Comprehensive Applications Of Rice Husk Biomass, Zichao Wei Dec 2016

Comprehensive Applications Of Rice Husk Biomass, Zichao Wei

Master's Theses

Rice husks (RHs) have recently attracted high attention due to their potential for many applications, including construction materials, composite materials, adsorption materials, chemical production, and power generation. RHs are an appealing alternative because of their low cost and high silica content. So far, most researchers mainly focus on the utilization of one component (such as silica) while ignoring others. Comprehensive utilization of RH biomass and diversified products are the key goals for this research field.

In this thesis, the two main components of RHs, silica and lignocellulose, were extracted from RH biomass. The high tempered calcination served as the extraction …

Internship Preparedness: A Look Into The Internship Experience At St. John Fisher College, Mcquade T. Milligan Dec 2016

Internship Preparedness: A Look Into The Internship Experience At St. John Fisher College, Mcquade T. Milligan

Sport Management Undergraduate

In the field of sport management, internships have been shown to be an important factor in the initial placement in the sport industry. Previous work has cited both design elements and the experience itself as being critical to internship success or failure. As the SJFC program requires two distinct required experiences, the purpose of this study was to explore the impact of these experiences on recent graduate’s confidence levels. Through survey data it was uncovered that participants who indicated a higher satisfaction with their final internship were more likely to end up in a career similar that of their last …

Improving Power In Group Sequential, Randomized Trials By Adjusting For Prognostic Baseline Variables And Short-Term Outcomes, Tianchen Qian, Michael Rosenblum, Huitong Qiu Dec 2016

Improving Power In Group Sequential, Randomized Trials By Adjusting For Prognostic Baseline Variables And Short-Term Outcomes, Tianchen Qian, Michael Rosenblum, Huitong Qiu

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In group sequential designs, adjusting for baseline variables and short-term outcomes can lead to increased power and reduced sample size. We derive formulas for the precision gain from such variable adjustment using semiparametric estimators for the average treatment effect, and give new results on what conditions lead to substantial power gains and sample size reductions. The formulas reveal how the impact of prognostic variables on the precision gain is modified by the number of pipeline participants, analysis timing, enrollment rate, and treatment effect heterogeneity, when the semiparametric estimator uses correctly specified models. Given set prognostic value of baseline variables and …

Water Security At Whiting Farm: 2016 Report, Emma Katz, Misha Copeland, Kate Cuthbert Dec 2016

Water Security At Whiting Farm: 2016 Report, Emma Katz, Misha Copeland, Kate Cuthbert

Community Engaged Research Reports

This report provides an analysis of the current water use at Whiting Farm in Auburn, ME, and provides suggestions for implementing systems that will reduce water use, make Whiting Farm independent in water acquisition, and provide ways to try to ensure water security going into the future. Currently, Whiting Farm suffers from unreliable and unsustainable water use exacerbated by the drought that occurred in the past few months. The farm system as a whole uses an enormous amount of water every day, and is reliant on an insufficient source of water-- a hand dug well sourced from a seasonal irrigation …

Peer Influence: Mechanisms And Motivations, Barbara J. Costello, Christine Zozula Dec 2016

Peer Influence: Mechanisms And Motivations, Barbara J. Costello, Christine Zozula

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Social science research on peer influence has focused on learning and reinforcement processes as potential explanations for the correlation between peer behavior and the individual’s behavior. These explanations assume that social ties can have either positive or negative effects on human behavior, depending on the nature of the groups to which the individual belongs. This view has been contested by those working in the control theory tradition in criminology, who argue that all social ties promote conformity. To shed new light on this debate, we ask a question that has not been addressed in previous research – why do youths …

Complete genome sequences of nine enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) strains from patients in New York were obtained in 2016 by metagenomic next-generation sequencing. Comparative genomic analysis suggests that a new subclade B3, with ~4.5% nucleotide divergence from subclade B1 strains causing the 2014 outbreak, is circulating in the United States in 2016.
