Breaking The Taboo: What My Mother’S Recent Suicide Might Teach Us In Critical Social Justice And Faith Work, And Perhaps Beyond, Gail Sue Kasun Oct 2016

Breaking The Taboo: What My Mother’S Recent Suicide Might Teach Us In Critical Social Justice And Faith Work, And Perhaps Beyond, Gail Sue Kasun

The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community

Suicide is taboo, as is sexual abuse. In this reflective essay, I consider my mother’s final choice, to end her life, inviting the reader to sit with me, to recognize the self in the other. I discuss my mother’s narcissism, her suicide, and the sexual abuse she endured as a child—all taboo. These taboo subjects naturally had massive impacts on my life, and I demonstrate fissures and impacts in this re-storying, as I call it, as I have begun to reframe my life in a post-suicide lens. I invite the reader to consider how breaking the taboo might create a …

Religion In Schools? The Importance Of Recognizing The Impact Of Religious Experiences, Kimberly K. Ilosvay Edd Oct 2016

Religion In Schools? The Importance Of Recognizing The Impact Of Religious Experiences, Kimberly K. Ilosvay Edd

The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community

The school environment is a place of forced contact between diverse peoples. It is the perfect environment to nurture the diverse identities present. The influences on identity (i.e., language, ethnicity, religion, etc.) shape how students perceive information and learn. Some educators use these influences to help them instruct students. However, often overlooked is the influence of religious practices on language use and behavior in classrooms. This paper argues that the significance of understanding the religious practices of students is equally as important for planning instruction as knowing any other aspect of their culture, (i.e., the students’ native language(s)). Framed by …

P-16 Service Learning Outcomes: Charting New Paths To Partner And Assess Innovative Collaborations, Julie Dierberger, Libby Ferris

SLA Scholarship

CUMU (Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities), 2016 Conference, Poster Presentations:

Julie Dierberger, and Samantha Kanouse, University of Nebraska at Omaha Commitment to quality service learning instruction at the higher education level has been a major tactic used to achieve the metropolitan mission at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). As service learning has become institutionalized across the campus, expansion to include the P-12 area schools and teachers became not only an important next step in relationship development, but also a means to better serve the Omaha community. To that end, UNO has been partnering with P-12 schools …

Multiple-Modality Exercise And Mind-Motor Training To Improve Cardiovascular Health And Fitness In Older Adults At Risk For Cognitive Impairment: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Narlon Cassio Boa Sorte Silva, Micheal A. Gregory, Dawn P. Gill, Robert Petrella

Lifestyle Research Team

Background:The effects of multiple-modality exercise on arterial stiffening and cardiovascular fitness has not been fully explored. Objectives: To explore the influence of a 24-week multiple-modality exercise program associated with a mind-motor training in cardiovascular health and fitness in community-dwelling older adults, compared to multiple-modality exercise (M2) alone.

Methods: Participants (n=127, aged 67.5 [7.3] years, 71% females) were randomized to either M4 or M2 groups. Both groups received multiple-modality exercise intervention (60 min/day, 3 days/week for 24-weeks); however, the M4 group underwent additional 15 min of mind-motor training, whereas the M2 group received 15 min of balance training. Participants …

Migrant Heterogeneity And Education Of Children Left Behind In Nepal, Nirmal Kumar Raut, Ryuichi Tanaka Oct 2016

Migrant Heterogeneity And Education Of Children Left Behind In Nepal, Nirmal Kumar Raut, Ryuichi Tanaka

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This study investigates the causal impact of work-related migration of parents on left behind children's education and investment on schooling. To isolate the direct impact of parental absence, we estimate the effects of parental migration and remittances separately. Using third round of Nepal Living Standard Survey and applying a two-step process to address selfselection into the migration statuses and correct for endogeneity into remittances, we find negative effect of parental absence and positive effect of remittances on education of children left behind. To further explore the heterogeneous impact of parental migration, we extend our analysis allowing the heterogeneity by educational …

The Skp1 Homologs Skr-1/2 Are Required For The Caenorhabditis Elegans Skn-1 Antioxidant/Detoxification Response Independently Of P38 Mapk., Cheng-Wei Wu, Andrew Deonarine, Aaron Przybysz, Kevin Strange, Keith P. Chloe

Molecular Biosciences Faculty Publications

SKN-1/Nrf are the primary antioxidant/detoxification response transcription factors in animals and they promote health and longevity in many contexts. SKN-1/Nrf are activated by a remarkably broad-range of natural and synthetic compounds and physiological conditions. Defining the signaling mechanisms that regulate SKN-1/Nrf activation provides insights into how cells coordinate responses to stress. Nrf2 in mammals is regulated in part by the redox sensor repressor protein named Keap1. In C. elegans, the p38 MAPK cascade in the intestine activates SKN-1 during oxidative stress by promoting its nuclear accumulation. Interestingly, we find variation in the kinetics of p38 MAPK activation and tissues with …
