An Examination Of The Athletic Identity, Identity Foreclosure, And Career Maturity Of Division I Collegiate Student-Athletes In Nonrevenue-Producing Sports, Stacia A. Klasen
An Examination Of The Athletic Identity, Identity Foreclosure, And Career Maturity Of Division I Collegiate Student-Athletes In Nonrevenue-Producing Sports, Stacia A. Klasen
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Very few student-athletes will go on to become a professional in their sport; therefore, the vast majority will need to pursue a non-sport career once their collegiate athletic eligibility has ended. Research indicates that a strong athletic identity and identity foreclosure coincide with lower levels of career maturity, which contributes to the struggle that student-athletes often face with their post-sport transition. The majority of student-athletes compete in nonrevenue-producing collegiate sports (e.g., cross country and soccer), but this subgroup has not been adequately examined. This is problematic because research suggests that lower career maturity levels exist among student-athletes in both revenue- …
An Exploration Of Counselor Educators' And Supervisors' Views Of The Development Of Multicultural Competency In Master's-Level Students During Practicum, Chunnan Hu

This study shares counselor educator and supervisors' current practices in promoting and …
The Effect Of Strain Rates On The Formability Of Commercial Pure Titanium Foils, Kechuang Zhang
The Effect Of Strain Rates On The Formability Of Commercial Pure Titanium Foils, Kechuang Zhang
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Due to its hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystal structures and limited slipping systems, commercial pure titanium shows low ductility. However, high-velocity deformation can be quite effective in increasing forming limits. In this present study, the formability of CP grade 2 titanium foils (38[micro]m) at various forming speeds were studied by experimental approach. A series of microlimited dome height ([micro]LDH) tests were conducted to examine the stamping formability of CP grade 2 titanium foils at different test speeds (0.01mm/s, 12m/s, 17m/s) on both MTS and split Hopkinson bar. Two different punch sizes (2mm, 20mm) were also used in [micro]LDH tests at quasi-static …

A repeated-measures analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted to evaluate change in comprehension performance from pretest to posttest, mean differences in comprehension performance between the two groups, and group differences in comprehension growth from pretest to …
The Food Pyramid : Mexicans, Agribusiness, Governments And Communities In The Midwest Migrant Stream, Katie Sutrina-Haney
The Food Pyramid : Mexicans, Agribusiness, Governments And Communities In The Midwest Migrant Stream, Katie Sutrina-Haney
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
As recent scholarship and even popular works and documentaries demonstrate, the United States public is largely unaware how our food ends up on our table. While some popular works found in bookstores explore where our food comes from, these works rarely analyze the role of labor and specifically the system of the migrant farmworker stream. Workers in the field make possible the complex process from the growth of produce to the selling of food to consumers. By the 1960s, communities and states in the Midwest reacted to editorialized and documented condemnation of the living and working conditions of migrant farmworkers …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Humanistic teaching endeavors are gaining a renewed focus in dental education as a result of the sustained number of oral health disparities in the United States. The accrediting body for dental education calls for institutions to provide a humanistic environment characterized by respect, tolerance, understanding, and concern for others: one fostered by mentoring, advising, and small group interaction. The voices of dental educators are absent from the literature on humanistic pedagogy; therefore, dental educators are unable to share or access teaching knowledge regarding what humanistic pedagogy looks like. The central research question of this study is, "In what ways do …

Task Specificity And Multiple Document Integration, Karyn Paula Higgs
Task Specificity And Multiple Document Integration, Karyn Paula Higgs
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Readers must often construct an understanding of a complex process (e.g. climate change) from multiple documents. This is challenging because the documents are typically written for different purposes by different authors. In this context, readers must engage different reading strategies, because information that is important to the meaning of an individual text (i.e. text-based importance) may not be relevant to the reader's purpose (i.e. task-based relevance). Readers may have a default processing strategy based on attending to textual importance (i.e. importance-based processing), but when they have a goal or a task, they may switch to a processing strategy based on …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Since 2000, Thailand's judiciaries have decided the fate of polls, politicians, political parties and policies. Such frequent incursions into uncharted political waters signals a tide of new and largely opaque activities that scholars refer to as "the judicialization of politics." This dissertation provides an account of the judicialization of Thai politics through an examination of the Administrative Court of Thailand. It focuses on the particular actions of both judges and plaintiffs as necessary to explain the phenomenon. In addition, this study attempts to examine the effects of the judicialization of Thai politics upon not only the immediate parties involved in …
The Outermost Court : Gentiles In Mormon Zion, 1831-1869, Christopher W. Anderson
The Outermost Court : Gentiles In Mormon Zion, 1831-1869, Christopher W. Anderson
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis explores the lives of the non-Mormon minority that lived within early Mormon communities. Understanding the nature of community formation and the role of passive religious dissent on the frontier of antebellum America problematizes monolithic narratives of religious conflict. A more localized exploration of Mormon/non-Mormon interaction provides insight into how these communities changed over time and how economic issues were central to their viability. Other studies of these relationships have focused on the conflict that arose between Mormon communities and their neighbors. By framing this investigation in terms of the opportunities for collaboration, I argue that these communities were …
The Politics Of Natural Resource Use : A Comparative Study Of Forest Exploitation In Indonesia And Cambodia, Azriansyah Achdiat Agoes
The Politics Of Natural Resource Use : A Comparative Study Of Forest Exploitation In Indonesia And Cambodia, Azriansyah Achdiat Agoes
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This paper address two questions. First, it examines the question of why authoritarian rulers rely on natural resources to stay in power. Second, it address the mechanism of how authoritarian rulers extract rents from natural resources and distribute the rents to construct patronage systems to cement political pacts and gain popular legitimacy. In this paper I argue that the characteristics of the state determine the strategy employed by authoritarian rulers to use natural resources for political purposes by distributing monopolies to business elites and receiving financial donations in return. This paper examines the cases of forest exploitation in Indonesia and …

Impacts Of Tourism On Water Quality In Quintana Roo, Mexico, Katelyn Kane
Impacts Of Tourism On Water Quality In Quintana Roo, Mexico, Katelyn Kane
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The Yucatan Peninsula is the world's second largest underwater karst cave system. The highly fractured limestone and scarce soil allows precipitation to rapidly infiltrate to the groundwater system identified as the Yucatan Aquifer. The geology of the area also prevents the accumulation of surface water; as such, groundwater is the only source of fresh water on the peninsula and can become easily contaminated due to anthropogenic activities on the surface from tourism. The state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, is economically dependent on the tourism industry. This study focuses on an assessment of eleven locations throughout the Cancun and Riveria Maya …

Methionine Aminopeptidase As A Target For The Discovery Of Novel Antibacterial Agents, Congling Chen
Methionine Aminopeptidase As A Target For The Discovery Of Novel Antibacterial Agents, Congling Chen
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The rise of antibiotic resistance has been an increasingly critical global health issue. Compounding this issue is the fact that the approval of new antibiotics has dramatically decreased over the past three decades. One validated target for the discovery of new antibacterial agents is methionine aminopeptidase (MetAp). MetAp is a metallo-protein that catalyzes the hydrolysis of the N-terminal methionine residue from nascent proteins, a key step required for certain post-translational modifications. Studies have demonstrated that knock-out mutations of the MetAp gene leads to decreased cell viability or even cell death, which strengthens MetAp as a viable target for antibiotic discovery …
