Attitudes Toward Cohabitation: A Cross Sectional Study, Kensington Shields-Dutton Jan 2016

Attitudes Toward Cohabitation: A Cross Sectional Study, Kensington Shields-Dutton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cohabitation and attitudes toward cohabitation have been of interest to social scientists since the 1970s. Early research on cohabitation concentrated on college aged students enrolled at institutions of higher learning. This trend was due to convenience sampling (Trost, 1978). Later research demonstrated the college population represented less than half of the total number of cohabitating persons. With the growth in numbers of persons who are choosing to cohabitate versus marrying, this study examines current attitudes towards cohabitation. This research augments the existing literature on attitudes toward cohabitation in the following ways: (1) it updates the current research on the attitudes …

Kidron Road And Other Stories, Jason Molohon Jan 2016

Kidron Road And Other Stories, Jason Molohon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Kidron Road and Other Stories is a collection of fiction that ranges from the soberly tragic to the magically real. The characters in each selection are molded by their choices, the choices of others, and the cruel whims of fate. I am fascinated by the way fatalism and free will intersect in the human experience. Therefore, my work often explores the paradoxical way lives are molded by past decisions while, at the same time, those decisions seem determined by outside forces.

Reconstructing Pregnancy, Sarudzayi M. Matambanadzo Jan 2016

Reconstructing Pregnancy, Sarudzayi M. Matambanadzo

SMU Law Review

Congress passed the Pregnancy Discrimination Act in 1978 to amend Title VII’s prohibition against sex discrimination to include discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions. More than thirty-five years after the passage of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, courts have failed to fulfill its promise. This failure lies, in part, from a tendency to reduce pregnancy, with all of its social and cultural meaning, to its “purely” biological elements. For the purposes of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, courts ground the legal conception of pregnancy in a form of biomedical essentialism that treats pregnancy as a universal given. …

Greed, Grief, A Gift. War-Traumatized Women And Contextualizing Expressive Arts Therapy, Sjoukje Marloes Van Houten Jan 2016

Greed, Grief, A Gift. War-Traumatized Women And Contextualizing Expressive Arts Therapy, Sjoukje Marloes Van Houten

Lingnan Theses

This dissertation explores the universality of trauma-storing in the body and the need for contextualization when it comes to treatment. Of the two central themes addressed, the first is war-related trauma and the intersection of expressive arts therapy and South (East) Asia (Nepal and Hong Kong in particular) with its specific imagery, art, and culture, and to see how both feed into each another and can transform as a result. The question is how to locally sensitize expressive arts therapy, which has its roots in Europe and the United States, to the Hong Kong setting; more specifically, to working with …

Mothers' Temperament, Adverse Childhood Experiences, And Psychological Symptoms: How Are Enduring Maternal Characteristics Related To Mothers' Perceptions Of Children's Temperament, Behavior Problems, And Adaptive Functioning?, Ellen Kolomeyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Extant literature documented the impact of mothers' characteristics and parenting behaviors on young children's psychosocial outcomes. Additionally, previous studies demonstrated the importance of mothers' adverse childhood experiences in the relationships among some of these constructs. To expand on the existing knowledge, the present study examined the relationships among mothers' temperament, reflective functioning, attributions, and specific parenting behaviors, with reflective functioning and attributions serving as two potential mediating variables in these relationships. A community sample of 224 diverse mothers of young children who were between 2- to 5-years of age rated their own adverse childhood experiences, temperament, reflective functioning, attributions, specific …

Urban Farming In The North American Metropolis: Rethinking Work And Distance In Alternative Food Networks, Diana Mincyte, Karin Dobernig Jan 2016

Urban Farming In The North American Metropolis: Rethinking Work And Distance In Alternative Food Networks, Diana Mincyte, Karin Dobernig

Publications and Research

This article examines the role of manual work in bridging the distance between production and consumption in alternative agro-food economies, particularly in urban farming. Scholars and public commentators often draw on Marxian theories of alienation to suggest that manual work constitutes a key strategy for reconnecting production and consumption, and overcoming the ecological rift between natural processes and modern, agro-industrial production. Focusing on urban farming, this article complicates the picture of unalienated, decommodified labor and points to continuous negotiations between experiences of re-embedding in the community and the environment, and the on-going commodification of the farming experience. We argue that …

Recent European developments in the area of focused bilateral migration agreements are also …

Airborne Assassin: Why The Official Stockpiles Of The Smallpox Virus Must Be Destroyed, Kylie Thompson Jan 2016

Airborne Assassin: Why The Official Stockpiles Of The Smallpox Virus Must Be Destroyed, Kylie Thompson

Emory International Law Review

In 1980, after a successful immunization campaign, WHO declared that smallpox, a virus that ravaged the human race, was eradicated. Today, the smallpox virus officially exists within two government laboratories: the CDC and Vector. The issue of whether or not to destroy the official stockpiles of the smallpox virus has been vigorously debated. Recent incidents, such as protocol lapses and the discovery of a forgotten stockpile, have further pushed the issue. In an increasingly interconnected world, the outbreak of a highly contagious, eradicated disease is more than disconcerting. The threat of bioterrorism also cannot be ignored as smallpox has been …

Embodying And Modeling Healthy Self-Care In Teacher Education, Cathy E. Freytag Jan 2016

Embodying And Modeling Healthy Self-Care In Teacher Education, Cathy E. Freytag

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

To care for others well, teachers must care for themselves in healthy and responsive ways. The “love mandate” in Scripture, says that we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and mind and love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22: 37-39). Far too often, Christians (particularly those in serving professions) fail to properly understand and enact healthy, God-honoring care for themselves. When teacher educators fail to model responsive self-care, they unwittingly perpetuate unhealthy messages about what it means to care well for others, and communicate to teacher candidates that doing good supersedes being well. In …

International Standards In Regulating Space Travel: Clarifying Ambiguities In The Commercial Era Of Outer Space, Juan Davalos Jan 2016

International Standards In Regulating Space Travel: Clarifying Ambiguities In The Commercial Era Of Outer Space, Juan Davalos

Emory International Law Review

The era of commercial space law has ushered in new commercial uses of space travel not imagined by, and not well governed by, current international space law. In this Comment, Juan Davalos first provides an analysis of the history of space law, from its inception in 1959-1967 to the present. The Comment outlines disparities and ambiguities in terms currently defined in domestic and international law space treaties. The Comment then seeks to clarify these undefined or ambiguous terms, including the definition of a space object, the delineation between Earth's air space and Outer Space, the definition of outer space itself, …

Comparative Approaches To Myanmar's Child Labor Epidemic: The Role Of Compulsory Education, Jack W. Roberts Jan 2016

Comparative Approaches To Myanmar's Child Labor Epidemic: The Role Of Compulsory Education, Jack W. Roberts

Emory International Law Review

In this Comment, Jack W. Roberts discusses a recent push in Myanmar to expand compulsory free education through age sixteen amid recent discoveries that child labor in Myanmar may be even worse than originally believed. Jack considers the effect such an expansion might have on the nation's child labor epidemic and possible approaches that might make this implementation more likely to succeed in curbing child labor. He considers the relatively recent expansions of compulsory education in other nations that have historically struggled with child labor'namely China, Brazil, and India'in searching for examples of policies that have helped to make education …

Why Animal Welfarism Continues To Fail, Lori Marino Jan 2016

Why Animal Welfarism Continues To Fail, Lori Marino

Animal Sentience

Welfarism prioritizes human interests over the needs of nonhuman animals. Despite decades of welfare efforts other animals are mostly worse off than ever before, being subjected to increasingly invasive and harmful treatments, especially in the factory farming and biomedical research areas. A legal rights-based approach is essential in order for other animals to be protected from the varying ethical whims of our species.

Anpd Position Statement: Quality And Safety Education For Nurses, Mary G. Harper Jan 2016

Anpd Position Statement: Quality And Safety Education For Nurses, Mary G. Harper

General Submissions: Organizations - Position Statements, White and Resource Papers

The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project was initiated in 2005 with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to prepare nurses to "improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems in which they work " (QSEN, n.d.). During the initial phases of the project, six competencies with concomitant knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) for each were developed and implemented in pre-licensure nursing programs. Academic faculty development related to teaching the QSEN competencies was an important component of the initiative. In 2012, graduate KSAs were developed to guide "curricular development for formal academic graduate programs and for …

Stress And Somatic Symptoms: Rumination And Negative Affect As Moderators, Melissa Joy Garner Jan 2016

Stress And Somatic Symptoms: Rumination And Negative Affect As Moderators, Melissa Joy Garner

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

This study examined the relationships between stress, negative affect, rumination, and somatic symptoms among older adolescents. The following hypotheses were investigated: 1) greater number of life stressors would predict greater somatic symptoms, 2) rumination would moderate the relationship between stressors and somatic symptoms, 3) negative affect would also moderate the relationship between stressors and somatic symptoms, and 4) a three-way interaction between stress, rumination and negative affect would significantly predict somatic symptoms. Participants were 363 (71.1% female) university students with a mean age of 19.06 years (SD=2.06 years) who completed eight weekly online questionnaires, assessing levels of rumination …

International Interests And Psychological Well-Being Following Global Service Learning As A Function Of Sociocultural Adaptation And Cultural Distance, Elizabeth C. Dykhouse Jan 2016

International Interests And Psychological Well-Being Following Global Service Learning As A Function Of Sociocultural Adaptation And Cultural Distance, Elizabeth C. Dykhouse

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

International immersion learning experiences intend to increase students’ awareness and understanding of the world and other cultures. However, empirical support for global learning and psychosocial outcomes is mixed. Using hierarchical linear modeling, this study examined the longitudinal trajectories of a global learning outcome (international interests; AGLII; Musil, 2006) and a psychosocial outcome (psychological well-being; MHI; Veit & Ware, 1983) for students (N = 147; 87% female; 72% Caucasian) who participated in a short-term (13 to 62 days) global service learning immersion to one of 15 countries (Brazil, Cambodia, China, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Malawi, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, …

Demand Controlled Heat Recovery For Residential Applications, Zhen Li, William Hutzel Jan 2016

Demand Controlled Heat Recovery For Residential Applications, Zhen Li, William Hutzel

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Heating and cooling for residential buildings consumes a lot of energy in the United States every year, which leads to Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) systems becoming more common for residential applications. An ERV is a relatively simple air to air heat exchanger with supply and exhaust fans. The supply fan pulls outdoor air into the house while the exhaust fan pulls stale air from the house. The ERV preheats outside air during cold weather and cools/dehumidifies outside air during warm weather. These systems are a good investment because they typically achieve a simple payback of 2 years or less based …

Energy Partisanship, Hari M. Osofsky Jan 2016

Energy Partisanship, Hari M. Osofsky

Emory Law Journal

Whether the topic is the Paris Agreement on climate change, greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, the Keystone XL pipeline, hydraulic fracturing, offshore drilling, or renewable energy, much of the U.S. policy dialogue about energy and climate change is deeply partisan. This Article provides a novel analysis of how to make progress on energy and climate change issues by translating this emerging psychological research into a framework for action. It proposes two interconnected strategies¿ substantive and structural¿for moving past imbedded partisanship and political dysfunction. Substantively, the Article argues for refocusing regulatory efforts on areas where a greater degree of consensus …

Intracellular Ros Mediates Gas Plasma-Facilitated Cellular Transfection In 2d And 3d Cultures, Dehui Xu, Biqing Wang, Yujing Xu, Zeyu Chen, Qinjie Cui, Yanjie Yang, Hailan Chen, Michael G. Kong

Bioelectrics Publications

This study reports the potential of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) as a versatile tool for delivering oligonucleotides into mammalian cells. Compared to lipofection and electroporation methods, plasma transfection showed a better uptake efficiency and less cell death in the transfection of oligonucleotides. We demonstrated that the level of extracellular aqueous reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by gas plasma is correlated with the uptake efficiency and that this is achieved through an increase of intracellular ROS levels and the resulting increase in cell membrane permeability. This finding was supported by the use of ROS scavengers, which reduced CAP-based uptake efficiency. In …

Ethical Leadership In Social Enterprises : Multilevel Investigation Of Its Influence On Team And Individual Prosocial Voice, Pok Man Tang Jan 2016

Ethical Leadership In Social Enterprises : Multilevel Investigation Of Its Influence On Team And Individual Prosocial Voice, Pok Man Tang

Lingnan Theses

This research paper seeks to draw on social learning theory (Bandura, 1977) as an overarching framework to examine how unit managers’ ethical leadership style affects the team and individual prosocial voice behaviors in the context of social enterprises in Hong Kong.

Ethical leadership has been found to be conducive to both desirable team and individual employee behaviors. However, scholarly understanding of the multi-level effects of ethical leadership and the underlying mechanisms involved is rather limited. Moreover, previous research has directed attention almost exclusively to the influence of ethical leadership in the context of commercial organizations. This narrow stance has curiously …

Multi-Segment Trunk Models Used To Investigate The Crunch Factor In Golf And Their Relationship With Selected Swing And Launch Parameters, Christopher Joyce

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

The use of multi-segment trunk models to investigate the crunch factor in golf may be warranted. The first aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between the trunk and lower trunk for crunch factor related variables (trunk lateral bending and trunk axial rotation velocity). The second aim was to determine the level of association between crunch factor related variables with swing (clubhead velocity) and launch (launch angle). Thirty five high level amateur male golfers (Mean ± SD: age = 23.8 ± 2.1 years, registered golfing handicap = 5 ± 1.9) without low back pain had kinematic data collected …

Male And Female Differences In Health Benefits Derived From Physical Activity: Implications For Exercise Prescription, Beth P. Hands, Helen Parker, Dawne Larkin, Marja Cantell, Elizabeth Rose Jan 2016

Male And Female Differences In Health Benefits Derived From Physical Activity: Implications For Exercise Prescription, Beth P. Hands, Helen Parker, Dawne Larkin, Marja Cantell, Elizabeth Rose

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Abstract:

Males are consistently reported as more physically active than females regardless of age or measure. Often, this difference results in females identified as under active and at risk of longterm poor health outcomes. In this paper a different perspective drawing on evidence from many sources is offered. Males and females gain different health benefits according to the level, mode and intensity of the physical activity. Some potential ramifications of these gender differences in health benefits are evident in the prevalence of hypokinetic diseases across the life span and the interpretation of measured physical activity levels and intensities. By focusing …

Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry Compared With Anthropometry In Relation To Cardio-Metabolic Risk Factors In A Young Adult Population: Is The ‘Gold Standard’ Tarnished?, D Demmer, L Beilin, B Hands, S Burrows, C Pennell, S Lye, J Mountain, T Mori Jan 2016

Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry Compared With Anthropometry In Relation To Cardio-Metabolic Risk Factors In A Young Adult Population: Is The ‘Gold Standard’ Tarnished?, D Demmer, L Beilin, B Hands, S Burrows, C Pennell, S Lye, J Mountain, T Mori

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Background and Aims: Assessment of adiposity using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has been considered more advantageous in comparison to anthropometryfor predicting cardio-metabolic risk in the older population, by virtue of its ability to distinguish total and regional fat. Nonetheless, there is increasing uncertainty regarding the relative superiority of DXA and little comparative data exist in young adults. This study aimed to identify which measure of adiposity determined by either DXA or anthropometry is optimal within a range of cardio-metabolic risk factors in young adults.

Methods and Results: 1138 adults aged 20 years were assessed by DXA and standard …

How Does Exposure To The Internet Affect Political Knowledge And Attitudes Among Rural Chinese?: A Field Experiment, Wenwen Shi Jan 2016

How Does Exposure To The Internet Affect Political Knowledge And Attitudes Among Rural Chinese?: A Field Experiment, Wenwen Shi

Wayne State University Dissertations

The Internet's political implications reach far beyond an advanced communication device in authoritarian regimes. The heated debate on the Internet's political potential in China is complicated by a lack of causal evidence demonstrated in the literature. Thus far, studies have only examined consequences of the rise of the Internet and the characteristics of netizens (wangmin), but they have failed to account for the possible transformative effect the Internet has on individual citizens. This study attempts to fill this gap by testing the impact of the Internet on rural Chinese villagers' political knowledge and political attitudes through a field experiment over …
