Social Capital In Online Courses, Thomas Mays Jan 2016

Social Capital In Online Courses, Thomas Mays

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

As colleges and universities increase their online course offerings, student social experiences in online learning environments require further examination, specifically for nonresidential students who may already be less integrated into college social networks. A social capital framework was used to guide this qualitative study of 17 nonresidential students and two faculty from two regional campuses of a public Midwestern university. Student participants reported different experiences in online courses compared to face-to-face (FTF) courses, expressly reporting the development of fewer friendships in their online courses, a lack of a sense of community, and an increase in the mechanical nature of their …

Representations And Discourses Of Black Motherhood In Hip Hop And R&B Over Time, Cassandra Chaney, Arielle Brown

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

This study will examine how representations and discourses regarding Black motherhood have changed in the Hip Hop and R&B genres over time. Specifically, this scholarly work will contextualize the lyrics of 79 songs (57 Hip Hop songs; 18 R&B songs; 2 songs represented the Hip Hop and R&B genre; 2 songs represented artists who produce music in 5 or 6 genres) from 1961-2015 to identify the ways that Black male and Black female artists described motherhood. Through the use of Black Feminist Theory, and by placing the production of these songs within a sociohistorical context, we provide an in-depth qualitative …

Complexity As The Gatekeeper To Equitable Mootness, R. Jake Jumbeck Jan 2016

Complexity As The Gatekeeper To Equitable Mootness, R. Jake Jumbeck

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

Equitable mootness has troubled appellate courts since its creation in the 1980s. Despite the doctrine's express limitation to 'complex reorganizations,' courts have found appeals from relatively simple reorganizations and liquidation plans equitably moot. Courts have criticized and limited the doctrine in recent years, resulting in three Court of Appeals decisions within ten weeks of each other in 2015. This Comment argues that these criticisms ultimately stemmed from the doctrine's misapplication. To apply the equitable mootness properly, this Comment proposes that appellate courts should first determine whether a complex reorganization occurred as a threshold matter. This Comment offers a four-factor normative …

Utilizing The Fourth Option: Examining The Permissibility Of Structured Dismissals That Do Not Deviate From The Bankruptcy Code's Priority Scheme, Kaylynn Webb Jan 2016

Utilizing The Fourth Option: Examining The Permissibility Of Structured Dismissals That Do Not Deviate From The Bankruptcy Code's Priority Scheme, Kaylynn Webb

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

Section 363 sales are increasingly used by debtors who wish to sell substantially all of their assets instead of attempting to restructure their estate through the chapter 11 reorganization process. Following a § 363 sale, debtors most commonly utilize one of the following three options to close their case: (1) request confirmation of a liquidation plan; (2) convert the chapter 11 case to a chapter 7 case; or (3) request a dismissal of the case. In In re Jevic, however, the Third Circuit closed the case by utilizing a fourth option: a structured dismissal, a type of relief not explicitly …

“Everybody’S Homeschooled Differently” - A Pilot Qualitative Study Of The Lived Experience Of Homeschooled College Students, Hannah J. Bullock, Maria P. Alexander, Irene L. Penkalsky

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Abstract

There are preconceived notions that homeschooled students suffer both academically and socially, especially in the college setting. The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experience of academic and social transition from homeschooling to a public university in homeschooled students. A phenomenological approach is used, which addresses individuals’ unique experiences and interpretations of those experiences based on their upbringing. A qualitative design is used in this study with semi-structured interviews in which participants were asked to talk about their social and academic transition experiences. The sample group includes previously homeschooled students that currently or previously attended a …

The purpose of this paper is to explore the possible connection between suicide and stuttering, identify warning signs and risk factors of suicide as they apply to our clients, and examine the moral implications and professional responsibilities of speech-language pathologists as they pertain to suicide prevention. From the research I conducted, I found that, as a whole, the national community of speech-language pathologists does not recognize any correlation between stuttering and suicide. However, as dictated by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) Code of Ethics, we as speech-language pathologists are obligated to make referrals outside of our profession as the need …

Modulation Of Body Weight By Intestinal Flora In Orphan Nuclear Receptor Shp-/- Mice, Ryan Mifflin Jan 2016

Modulation Of Body Weight By Intestinal Flora In Orphan Nuclear Receptor Shp-/- Mice, Ryan Mifflin

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The whole-body deletion of small heterodimer partner (SHP) in mice is associated with protection from diet-induced obesity and hepatic steatosis upon feeding of a western diet. This protection was reported to be mediated through decreases in hepatic gene expression for lipogenesis, as well as increases in gene expression for fatty acid oxidation. SHP has been known to regulate the expression of the CYP7A1 gene, encoding the rate-limiting enzyme for bile acid synthesis, thereby altering the bile acid pool. The effects of this altered bile acid profile on the gut microbiome are unknown, as some bacteria in the gut are responsible …
