We tested the hypothesis that epigenetic mechanisms in the brain and the immune system are associated with chronic pain. Genome-wide DNA methylation assessed in 9 months post nerve-injury (SNI) and Sham rats, in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) as well as in T cells revealed a vast difference in the DNA methylation landscape in the brain between the groups and a remarkable overlap (72%) between differentially methylated probes in T cells and prefrontal cortex. DNA methylation states in the PFC showed robust correlation with pain score of animals in several genes involved in pain. Finally, only 11 differentially methylated probes in …
Sedentary Behavior-Inducing Randomized Control Intervention On Various Health-Related Outcomes In Active, Young Adults, Meghan Edwards
Sedentary Behavior-Inducing Randomized Control Intervention On Various Health-Related Outcomes In Active, Young Adults, Meghan Edwards
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An expansive body of literature has established the positive effects of physical activity on a number of health-related outcomes, including chronic disease prevention (both physiological and psychological). In addition to growing information regarding the benefits of physical activity, recent research has suggested the need to focus future studies on the effects of sedentary behavior (independent of physical activity) on one’s wellbeing. The majority of existing research on sedentary behavior, however, has used cross-sectional study designs. The few experimental studies on sedentary behavior have primarily focused on minimizing prolonged sedentary behavior among inactive individuals, rather than inducing sedentary behavior. We hypothesized …

The Neuroscience Of Fear And Anxiety: A Primer For Clinicians, Lionel Lee
The Neuroscience Of Fear And Anxiety: A Primer For Clinicians, Lionel Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Over the last few decades, research in affective neuroscience has led to considerable insights into the biology of fear and anxiety. For those in the practice of psychotherapy, these advances hold the potential for explaining the evolutionary utility of these emotions and targeting psychotherapeutic interventions to neurobiological correlates when these emotions go awry. The conversation of neuroscience, however, has yet to find a comfortable place in the therapy room. Translational and conceptual disparities owing to the historical split between psychology and neuroscience, continue to present challenges to their integration. The present study seeks to reframe clinicians’ understanding of the biological …

Fault Detection And Diagnosis Process For Oversizing Design On Multiple Packaged Air-Conditioning Units, Denchai Woradechjumroen, Haorong Li, Thanapat Promwattanapakee
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems are seldom designed or commissioned properly. The situation leads to abrupt or degradation faults resulting in inefficient energy uses, excessive energy consumption and high service costs. To solve these aforementioned problems, fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) is utilized to firstly detect any abnormal conditions of a system and then diagnoses and determines their causes. In order to apply this concept in HVAC oversizing designs, this paper proposes the state-of-art procedure of a FDD procedure for analyzing the inherently faulty design (oversizing) of multiple packaged air-conditioning units used to supply cooling for an open …

The Identification Of Haemonchus Species And Diagnosis Of Haemonchosis, Dante Zarlenga, E.P. Hoberg, W. Tuo
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Diagnosis is often equated with identification or detection when discussing parasitic diseases. Unfortunately, these are not necessarily mutually exclusive activities; diseases and infections are generally diagnosed and organisms are identified. Diagnosis is commonly predicated upon some clinical signs; in an effort to determine the causative agent, identification of genera and species is subsequently performed. Both identification and diagnosis play critical roles in managing an infection, and involve the interplay of direct and indirect methods of detection, particularly in light of the complex and expanding problem of drug-resistance in parasites. Accurate and authoritative identification that is cost- and time-effective, based on …

The ability to maintain intra-cellular pH is crucial for bacteria and other microbes to survive in diverse environments, particularly those that undergo fluctuations in pH. Mechanisms of acid resistance remain poorly understood in mycobacteria. Although, studies investigating acid stress in M. tuberculosis are gaining traction, few center on Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), the etiological agent of chronic enteritis in ruminants. We identified a MAP acid stress response network involved in macrophage infection. The central node of this network was MAP0403, a predicted serine protease that shared an 86% amino acid identity with MarP in M. tuberculosis. Previous studies confirmed …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Habituation is a decrease in responding to a repeated stimulus. Operant responding and salivation measure habituation in eating behaviour research. Stress may increase eating by acting as a distractor, yielding spontaneous recovery and prolonging responding for food. Our research tested differences in the ability of cognitive and inter- personal stressors to recover responding for food. We also tested heart rate variability (HRV) as a measure of habituation. Twenty women worked for portions of macaroni and cheese for 15 trials on three separate laboratory visits. Between the 12th and 13th trial, one of three different stressor types (speech, stroop and subtraction) …

Effects Of A Mixed-Mode Instructional Program On The Communicative Turns Of Preschoolers With Down Syndrome Who Use Augmentative And Alternative Communication, Erika Timpe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Children with Down syndrome are at increased risk for a variety of deficits, including those in the area of speech, language, and literacy. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have historically focused on building children's verbal and signed vocabulary, but these efforts do not always result in significant changes in children's functional communication. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and interventions have been recommended by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association as appropriate options for facilitating functional communication skills with children with Down syndrome ([American Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA], 2010; New York State Department of Health [NYSDOH], 2006). In spite of these recommendations, there exists a …

Linearly Stressed To Death: Consideration Of Early Childhood Stress As A Main Contributor To The Regional Variability In Classic Maya Mortuary Profiles, Nicholas Billstrand
Linearly Stressed To Death: Consideration Of Early Childhood Stress As A Main Contributor To The Regional Variability In Classic Maya Mortuary Profiles, Nicholas Billstrand
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Late and Terminal Classic periods were times of great social, economic, and political change in Maya civilization. Scholars have suggested that increasing levels of dietary stress during this time may have been the result of ecological instability, drought, warfare, and significant levels of population movement across the Maya lowlands. All of these processes may have affected human health and left measurable markers of stress in human skeletal material. The burial population recovered from two sites on Ambergris Caye, located near the coast of Belize, have significantly more sub-adult individuals than sites in inland Belize, such as Actuncan, suggesting the …
Spine Lifting Biomechanics Between Varying Occupational Activity Levels And Recreational Physical Activity Levels, Caitlin Rose Francis
Spine Lifting Biomechanics Between Varying Occupational Activity Levels And Recreational Physical Activity Levels, Caitlin Rose Francis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Moderate to vigorous physical activity as the optimum movement patterns for health have continued to be the dominant focus of health and fitness research. Yet, emerging evidence of deleterious, adverse health effects of prolonged inactivity, independent of regular physical activity, presents a new element to establishing the ideal model of movement patterns for health. The musculoskeletal trunk of the body becomes unbalanced as a result of prolonged inactivity, and a biomechanical analysis can help to identify high-risk loading behavior associated with these unbalances. Moreover, poor spine biomechanics can indicate a need for adjustment to present recommendations for optimum movement …

Functional foods are believed to improve overall health and well-being and reduce the risk of specific diseases. Research has examined adult awareness and consumption of functional foods. However, research on whether parental awareness and consumption of functional foods results in feeding their children functional foods is lacking. Therefore, this study’s objective was to examine relationships between parental awareness and consumption of functional foods, and feeding their children functional foods. Parents of children in two school districts in Mississippi were surveyed (n=202). The section on parental awareness, consumption, and feeding their children consisted of 27 questions featuring 19 functional food components, …
The Relationship Of Parental Barriers To Parents Feeding Their Children Health-Promoting, Functional Foods, Jordyn Michelle Thornton
The Relationship Of Parental Barriers To Parents Feeding Their Children Health-Promoting, Functional Foods, Jordyn Michelle Thornton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Studies have discovered barriers that prevent parents from feeding children nutritiously. There is sparse information about whether parents intentionally feed their children functional foods, raising the question of whether there are barriers that inhibit parents when feeding their children nutritiously. This study of parents in two Mississippi school districts in 2015 ( n=193) examined the barriers parents face to consuming health-promoting, functional foods as well as the relation of these barriers to feeding their children functional foods. The age group 45–54 was less likely to perceive taste as a barrier (p<.05) to consuming functional foods, while individuals with some college education (p<.05) and individuals with an associate degree (p<.05) were more likely to perceive taste as a barrier. Additionally, the age group 55+ was less likely to perceive availability of food as a barrier (p<.01). Lastly, the females were more likely than males to perceive knowledge as a barrier ; lack of knowledge of foods’ health benefits was significant for the female gender (p<.05) to consuming functional foods. This study also found a significant relationship between parent’s lack of knowledge of health-promoting foods when feeding their children functional foods for specific health benefits. The findings concluded that parents who perceived lack of knowledge as a barrier to consuming functional foods, were more likely to feed their children foods with health benefits for cancer prevention (p<.01), heart health ( p<.05), and other health benefits (p<.01), while not for bone, digestive, and weight health. Further investigation shothat foods beneficial for cancer prevention, heart health, and other health benefits are among food items incorporated in children’s diets through foods such as fruits, vegetables, fortified foods/beverages, etc.
