Investigating The Relationship Between Personality Traits And Athletic Performance Among Elite Hockey Players, Brittney H. Conway
Investigating The Relationship Between Personality Traits And Athletic Performance Among Elite Hockey Players, Brittney H. Conway
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"An interesting trend in the personality literature has been the assessment of the relationship between personality traits and athletic performances. In non-sport settings, the conscientiousness trait has been found to be strongly related to a number of good outcomes including job and training proficiency, academic performances, and physical activity (Barrick & Mout, 1991; Poropat, 2009; Rhodes & Smith, 2006). In the athletic setting, similar findings have been found with soccer players (Piedmont, Hill, & Blanco, 1999), football players (Tran, 2012) and Division 1 collegiate athletes (Saale-Prasad, 2014). However, in professional hockey these findings have generally not been replicated (Karp, 2000; …

Documenting Dreams: Undocumented Students In Washington State, M. Elena Calderon Sandoval
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"This research explores immigration policies that have provided access to higher education to undocumented students through the lens of sociocultural identity theory and cultural identification theory. These theories are fundamental in understanding the construction of identity for undocumented students as a result of their interactions with policies and higher education institutions. Pertinent Washington State legislation includes House Bill 1079, which allows for undocumented students to pay in-state tuition, the Real Hope Act that provides financial aid for undocumented students. Federal policy includes the Executive Order Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which allows undocumented students who meet certain requirements to apply …
Upper Extremity Strength And Power Field Tests As Predictors Of Pole Vault Performance In Female Collegiate Athletes, Carmen Schluter
Upper Extremity Strength And Power Field Tests As Predictors Of Pole Vault Performance In Female Collegiate Athletes, Carmen Schluter
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"The purpose of this study was to determine if select upper-extremity strength and power field tests, and the test battery, predict pole vault performance in female pole vaulters. There is very little research on female pole vault athletes, specifically non-elite athletes. Field tests previously shown to be predictive of performance in males were examined to determine if they were also predictive for females. Four tests were used (8 lb backwards medicine ball (MB) throw, 3 m seated rope pull, three pull-ups for time, and maximum pull-ups) to determine if pole vault performance (season personal record for each athlete) could be …
Comparative Examination Of Lake Spokane Groundwater For Nutrient Discharge By Residential Development Influence, Wyatt Plastino
Comparative Examination Of Lake Spokane Groundwater For Nutrient Discharge By Residential Development Influence, Wyatt Plastino
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"The goal of this study is to support the implementation of the Total Maximum Daily Load regulation for the Spokane River and Lake Spokane area in Eastern Washington in partnership with United States Geologic Survey and the Washington State Department of Ecology. The influence of residential development along the north shore of the Lake Spokane reservoir in the Suncrest area was examined as a possible nonpoint source of nutrient contamination to shoreline groundwater and as a possible influence on algae growth in Lake Spokane. Surface water and groundwater samples from hand-driven piezometers were collected from three residential development categories. The …
Numerical Model Water Quality For Hidalgo County, Texas; Main Drainage System, Jose Orvyl Gonzalez, Grimaldo Carrillo, Jungseok Ho
Numerical Model Water Quality For Hidalgo County, Texas; Main Drainage System, Jose Orvyl Gonzalez, Grimaldo Carrillo, Jungseok Ho
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Increasing urbanization, water intake, and human water interaction of drainage canals of the Hidalgo County watershed seals the drainage basin and expands floodplains along the canal-side. Incremental use of drainage systems affects the amounts of nutrients that can cause an exposure to residues of agriculture chemicals, water related parasitic diseases, and fecal diseases. Proper water quality management is crucial for pollutant transport detection, estimation of non-point source discharge, and prediction of pollutant discharge at water endpoints. This research seeks to improve the understanding stormwater quality and quantity that is influenced by the frequency of human-water contacts and associated with treatment …

A Resource Manual To College And University Academic Return For Young Adults With A Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Rachel Gromek, Emily Hermanson
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Purpose: Reportedly, in the United States 75% of traumatic brain injuries that occur each year are referred to as mild (Centers for Disease Control Prevention, 2010). Traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of disability each year with the highest prevalence being between ages 15-24 years (Willmott, Ponsford, Downing, & Carty, 2014). The greatest deficits experienced by college or university students with a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are cognitive, psychosocial, and physical (Kennedy, Krause, & O’Brien, 2014; Marschark, Richtsmeier, Richardson, Crovitz, & Henry, 2000). The purpose of this project was to address the limited resources available to individuals with …
Chronic Low Back And Pelvic Girdle Pain 10 Months Post-Partum: A Case Study, Heidi Hansen
Chronic Low Back And Pelvic Girdle Pain 10 Months Post-Partum: A Case Study, Heidi Hansen
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Background and Purpose
Due to the increase in relaxin hormone during pregnancy women often experience increases in joint and ligament laxity. The result of this increase in laxity during or after pregnancy can lead to problems with postural and/or gait abnormalities, diastasis recti (separation between left and right side of rectus abdominus muscle) and pain, specifically, low back and pelvic girdle pain. Activities of daily living are often impacted because of these problems. The purpose of this case study is to highlight some of the principal issues and therapeutic options for postpartum women as presented through the case of one …

Effectiveness Of The 30 Second Chair Stand Test In Reducing The Fall Risk Of Community Dwelling Older Adults Participating In The Stepping On Program, Corissa Kruse
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Stepping On is a seven week fall prevention program that utilizes education and exercise. The purpose of this study is to see if the participants of Stepping On can show a decrease in fall risk through the use of the 30 Second Chair Stand Test (30sCST), a functional assessment tool used to assess fall risk. This study looked at a group of 14 females (M=87 y/o) at an assisted living facility, who met the program's qualifications (community dwelling individuals and ≥ 65 y/o) and attended the Stepping On program. Only eight participants were tested using the 30sCST at Week 1 …

Point-Of-Care Testing In Primary Care May Reduce Overall Cost And Improve Both Patient Satisfaction And Efficiency, Eric A. Sadler
Point-Of-Care Testing In Primary Care May Reduce Overall Cost And Improve Both Patient Satisfaction And Efficiency, Eric A. Sadler
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
• Objective: Increased demands for primary care are forcing clinical offices to deliver cost and time efficient care while providing exceptional patient experiences. Traditional lab testing methods require multiple steps for the patient and provider. Test results are not available until a later time which may delay decision making, patient discussion and medical planning. Point-of-care testing (POCT) provides an alternative that allows the patient to have testing, discuss the results and establish a treatment plan during a single office appointment.
• Design: A review of literature examined studies that compare cost-effectiveness, patient satisfaction and efficiency of POCT with traditional laboratory …

This article presents the results of a consultative exercise to collaboratively identify 100 research questions of critical importance for the post-2015 international development agenda. The final shortlist is grouped into nine thematic areas and was selected by 21 representatives of international and non-governmental organisations and consultancies, and 14 academics with diverse disciplinary expertise from an initial pool of 704 questions submitted by 110 organisations based in 34 countries. The shortlist includes questions addressing long-standing problems, new challenges and broader issues related to development policies, practices and institutions. Collectively, …
How Courts Adjudicate Patent Definiteness And Disclosure, John R. Allison, Lisa Larrimore Ouellette
How Courts Adjudicate Patent Definiteness And Disclosure, John R. Allison, Lisa Larrimore Ouellette
Duke Law Journal
Section 112 of the Patent Act requires patentees to clearly explain what their invention is (a requirement known as claim definiteness), as well as how to make and use it (the disclosure requirements of enablement and written description). Many concerns about the modern patent system stem from these requirements. But despite the critical importance of § 112 to the functioning of the patent system, there is surprisingly little empirical data about how it has been applied in practice. To remedy the reliance on anecdotes, we have created a hand-coded dataset of 1144 reported court decisions from 1982 to 2012 in …
Removing The "Silencer": Coverage And Protection Of Physician Speech Under The First Amendment, Ryan T. Weiss
Removing The "Silencer": Coverage And Protection Of Physician Speech Under The First Amendment, Ryan T. Weiss
Duke Law Journal
The physician–patient relationship rests on a bedrock of trust. Without trust, patients—and for that matter, physicians—are less willing to divulge information critical to providing accurate medical diagnoses and treatments. The state of Florida seemingly ignored this when its legislature, with support from the National Rifle Association and other pro-gun advocates, enacted the Firearm Owners Privacy Act (FOPA), a statute that restricts physicians from questioning their patients about firearm ownership. In Wollschlaeger v. Governor of Florida , the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit held that FOPA did not regulate physician speech but, instead, regulated physician conduct. As …

Dead Hands, Living Trees, Historic Compromises: The Senate Reform And Supreme Court Act References Bring The Originalism Debate To Canada, J. Gareth Morley
Dead Hands, Living Trees, Historic Compromises: The Senate Reform And Supreme Court Act References Bring The Originalism Debate To Canada, J. Gareth Morley
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Recent American debates about the relationship between the historic political compromises underlying constitutional provisions and their contemporary judicial application have been largely ignored in Canada. The Supreme Court of Canada has only twice referred to originalism—and never positively. But in two 2014 decisions about how central institutions of government—the Senate and the Supreme Court of Canada itself—might be changed, the Court relied on the underlying historic political compromises to interpret the Constitution, rejecting arguments from the text or democratic principle. In this article, I consider how Canadian courts have looked to history in the past and in the 2014 decisions, …

The Objectives And Principles Of The Wto Trips Agreement: A Detailed Anatomy, Alison Slade
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Article 7 (Principles) and Article 8 (Objectives) are prominent within the text of the WTO TRIPS Agreement, yet have figured sparingly in the reasoning of the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB). This discrepancy is accentuated when considered in light of three key factors. First, the pioneering step taken by TRIPS negotiators to include broad declarations of intent within the operative text. Second, the 2001 reinforcement given to these provisions in the Doha Declaration on TRIPS and Public Health. Finally, the verbatim replication of these provisions within other international IP instruments, notably, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement and the WIPO …
