Unique Behavioral And Neurochemical Effects Induced By Repeated Adolescent Consumption Of Caffeine-Mixed Alcohol In C57bl/6 Mice., Meridith T. Robins, Julie Lu, Richard M. Van Rijn

Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications

The number of highly caffeinated products has increased dramatically in the past few years. Among these products, highly caffeinated energy drinks are the most heavily advertised and purchased, which has resulted in increased incidences of co-consumption of energy drinks with alcohol. Despite the growing number of adolescents and young adults reporting caffeine-mixed alcohol use, knowledge of the potential consequences associated with co-consumption has been limited to survey-based results and in-laboratory human behavioral testing. Here, we investigate the effect of repeated adolescent (post-natal days P35-61) exposure to caffeine-mixed alcohol in C57BL/6 mice on common drug-related behaviors such as locomotor sensitivity, drug …

A Bayesian Approach For Modeling Occupants' Use Of Window Shades, Seyed Amir Sadeghi, Nimish M Awalgaonkar, Panagiota Karava, Ilias Bilionis

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Despite the significant impact of occupant interactions with window shading systems on visual comfort and building energy consumption, there are still significant gaps in understanding and predicting these complex phenomena. This paper presents a Bayesian modeling approach for the prediction of states of motorized roller shades operated by occupants. It is based on a field study with large number of human test-subjects in a high performance building with advanced technology and easy-to-access user interfaces for environmental controls. Unlike the Frequentist methods used in previous studies, the Bayesian approach allows for uncertainty quantification which provides further insight on parameter estimates in …

Background

Considering the extreme shortage of smoking cessation services in China, and the acceptability, feasibility and efficacy of mobile phone-based text message interventions for quitting smoking in other countries, here we propose a study of “the efficacy of mobile phone-based text message interventions (‘Happy Quit’) for smoking cessation in China”. The primary objective of this proposed project is to assess whether a program of widely accessed mobile phone-based text message interventions (‘Happy Quit’) will be effective at helping people in China who smoke, to quit. Based on the efficacy of previous studies in smoking cessation, we hypothesize that ‘Happy Quit’ …

Current Based Hvac Systems Air Filter Diagnostics And Monitoring, Fadi M. Alsaleem, Michael Munroe, Mostafa Rafaie Rafaie Jan 2016

Current Based Hvac Systems Air Filter Diagnostics And Monitoring, Fadi M. Alsaleem, Michael Munroe, Mostafa Rafaie Rafaie

International High Performance Buildings Conference

This paper addresses the use of continuous indoor motor current to detect filter blockage in HVAC system. A commonly known phenomenon exists in the loading of a typical indoor motor blower that results in a power consumption decrease and hence less current draw for PSC motor, and power and currant draw increase for constant torque motor. Testing using Akaike information criterion (AIC), classification and regression tree (CART) models, and using both fixed radius basis function and linear basis function was described and performed against field of installed systems to determine if candidate data filter was sufficient, or to motivate use …

Air Cleaning Performance Of A Biowall For Residential Applications, Osama Alraddadi, Hannes Leuner, Brandon Boor, Bhargav Rajkhowa, William Hutzel, Michael Dana

International High Performance Buildings Conference

An active botanical air filtration system, called the Biowall, is used to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) and provide the potential for energy savings for air conditioning in residential buildings. The Biowall is an integral part of the HVAC system to actively filter the return air from Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).   The Biowall was recently evaluated in an environmental chamber with controlled conditions to measure its air cleaning characteristics.  A ‘pull-down’ test method, in which a known amount of contaminant was introduced to the chamber so that its decay could be monitored over time, was used for …

Energy And Economic Performance Analysis Of Heat Recovery Devices Under Different Climate Conditions, Stefanie Tafelmeier, Giovanni Antonio Longo, Andrea Gasparella Jan 2016

Energy And Economic Performance Analysis Of Heat Recovery Devices Under Different Climate Conditions, Stefanie Tafelmeier, Giovanni Antonio Longo, Andrea Gasparella

International High Performance Buildings Conference

High performance buildings typically relies on extreme envelope performances in terms of insulation level, solar gains valorization and airtightness. The energy needs are limited and the system sizing is reduced to increase the recourse to renewable energy sources. The only exception to this trend is related to the ventilation, which is even more crucial because of the infiltration control. Mechanical ventilation is a common option to ensure an appropriate ventilation rate and a suitable indoor air quality. Heat recovery devices are widely used to save energy in buildings mechanical ventilation systems. Their contribution in the design or operating phases is …

Hvac Solutions For Small- And Medium-Sized Commercial Building Retrofit Opportunities, Bonggil Jeon, W. Travis Horton Jan 2016

Hvac Solutions For Small- And Medium-Sized Commercial Building Retrofit Opportunities, Bonggil Jeon, W. Travis Horton

International High Performance Buildings Conference

According to the Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey 2003 (CBECS 2003) conducted by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, over 70% of existing commercial buildings across the United States are more than twenty years old, with many of these buildings soon in need of renovation. Also, CBECS 2003 reports that existing small- and medium-sized commercial buildings (smaller than 200,000 square feet) consume about 75% of the energy used in these buildings, which means there is a great potential for energy savings with integrated technologies and building retrofit solutions, such as HVAC and envelope integration, and window and lighting integration. The primary …

Temperature, Relative Humidity, And Carbon-Dioxide Modulation In A Near-Zero Energy Efficient Retrofit House, Saurabh Sudhakaran, Mark Shaurette Jan 2016

Temperature, Relative Humidity, And Carbon-Dioxide Modulation In A Near-Zero Energy Efficient Retrofit House, Saurabh Sudhakaran, Mark Shaurette

International High Performance Buildings Conference

The concept of Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) has reached a phase where countries all around the world are encouraging its implementation into mainstream construction. In the United States, both private and public sector buildings are incorporating energy efficient technologies to reduce their environmental impact, while increasing the productivity and comfort of its occupants. A Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) performs as expected only when the building’s envelope, HVAC and other mechanical/electrical systems work in unison. Subsequently, once these buildings are occupied, the behavior of its occupants significantly influences the buildings energy performance. The authors have captured the modulation of …

CTRC Research Publications

A cycle-integrated energy storage strategy for vapor-compression refrigeration is proposed wherein thermo-mechanical energy is stored as compressed liquid.A compressed-liquid tank is integrated into the liquid line of the system by means of an adsorption-based vapor accumulator in the vapor line. Energy is retrieved through expansion of the compressed liquid, which allows for a tunable evaporator temperature. A thermodynamic model is developed to assess the system performance, with storage incorporated, for solar residential cooling in two locations with contrasting ambient temperature profiles. Ammonia, R134a, and propane, all paired with activated carbon as adsorbent, are evaluated.A high cold thermal energy storage density …

The Bawdy Bluff: Prostitution In Memphis, Tennessee, 1820-1900, Aran Tyson Smith Jan 2016

The Bawdy Bluff: Prostitution In Memphis, Tennessee, 1820-1900, Aran Tyson Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The “Bawdy Bluff” is a study of prostitution in Memphis, Tennessee, between the city’s founding and the end of the nineteenth century. Its focus is on the relationship of prostitutes to the wider community as well as their lived experience. The bulk of scholarship on prostitution in nineteenth century America examines Northeastern cities and Western mining camps. Outside of New Orleans, there is a dearth of research into prostitution in the urban South. This dissertation seeks to correct this oversight. By examining prostitution through the lenses of race, class, and gender, the “Bawdy Bluff” illuminates the ways power operated in …

Take The Mountain: The International Order Of Twelve Knights And Daughters Of Tabor And The Black Health Care Initiative In The Mississippi Delta, 1938 – 1983, Katrina Rochelle Sims

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation explores the intersection of black racial uplift strategies, black women’s entry and marginalization within distinctly male-dominated spaces such as fraternal orders, and institutional racism, specifically the implementation of regulatory policies to hinder predominately black communities from accessing state programs and funding resources. It demonstrates how African Americans in the Mississippi Delta circumvented Jim Crow practices that restricted black Mississippians access to facilities and funding. It acknowledges the comprehensive health care initiative that provided African Americans with autonomous medical care. It complicates the narrative that defined civil rights strictly within the framework of the franchise and integration of public …

An Investigation Of The Adsorption Behavior Between Silver Nanoparticles (Agnps) And Corundum (Α-Al2O3) At Environmental Ph Values Using Inductively-Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (Icp-Oes) And Raman Spectroscopy, Kevin Andrew O'Neil

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

With the increased use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in consumer products, the need to monitor their release into environmental soils has become critical. Although minerals make up a large component of soils, research on their interactions with AgNPs is still limited. Furthermore, the majority of the existing research focused on silica-based minerals rather than metal oxides, which is the second most abundant mineral type in the earth's crust. This study examined for the first time the aqueous interaction between the widely used, spherical Creighton AgNPs and a-corundum (a-Al2O3), a representative non-silica-based mineral, at environmentally relevant pH values (6-11). Samples were …

Web 2.0 and social media enable people to create, share and discover information instantly anywhere, anytime. A great amount of this information is subjective information -- the information about people's subjective experiences, ranging from feelings of what is happening in our daily lives to opinions on a wide variety of topics. Subjective information is useful to individuals, businesses, and government agencies to support decision making in areas such as product purchase, marketing strategy, and policy making. However, much useful subjective information is buried in ever-growing user generated data on social media platforms, it is still difficult to extract high quality …

An Unrelenting Past: Historical Memory In Japan And South Korea, Hannah Elisabeth Collins Jan 2016

An Unrelenting Past: Historical Memory In Japan And South Korea, Hannah Elisabeth Collins

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Every population maintains collective memories which provide meaning and identity for members (Langenbache, 2003). Elites have exerted influence on what is being remembered and the interpretation of the remembrances for specific objects, through the concept of historical memory. Wang (2012) has shown that authoritarian governments leverage historical memory to increase legitimacy. Similarly, Bernhard and Kubik (2014) have demonstrated that transitioning democracies also benefit from elite use of historical memory for consolidation. The lack of studies concerning consolidated democracies' use of historical memory raises many questions, including whether consolidated democracies manipulate historical memory for the purpose of legitimacy? I contend that, …

The Development And Validation Of A One Tier Diagnostic Assessment To Test Premedical Students' Misconceptions About Traumatic Brain Injury, Md Hasan Iqbal

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Since brain injury is common in the United States, it is important for health professionals and the public to have accurate knowledge about traumatic brain injury (TBI). Understanding misconceptions is important for health educators, nurses, and physicians, who work with TBI patients. While previous studies on misconceptions about TBI have been undertaken, these have not focused on pre-medical students, nor utilized validated assessments. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a one tier diagnostic test with a confidence index to determine premedical students' misconceptions about TBI. Using the theoretical framework suggested by Treagust (1986, 1988, and 1995), …

Missing Gene Identification Using Functional Coherence Scores, Meghana Chitale, Ishita K. Khan, Daisuke Kihara Jan 2016

Missing Gene Identification Using Functional Coherence Scores, Meghana Chitale, Ishita K. Khan, Daisuke Kihara

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Reconstructing metabolic and signaling pathways is an effective way of interpreting a genome sequence. A challenge in a pathway reconstruction is that often genes in a pathway cannot be easily found, reflecting current imperfect information of the target organism. In this work, we developed a new method for finding missing genes, which integrates multiple features, including gene expression, phylogenetic profile, and function association scores. Particularly, for considering function association between candidate genes and neighboring proteins to the target missing gene in the network, we used Co-occurrence Association Score (CAS) and PubMed Association Score (PAS), which are designed for capturing functional …

A Review Of The Evidence Supporting The Taste Of Non‐Esterified Fatty Acids In Humans, Cordelia Running, Richard D. Mattes

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Dietary fats contribute to the flavor of foods by multiple mechanisms. A role for their taste has only recently gained credence. Current evidence indicates non‐esterified fatty acids (NEFA) are the effective stimuli for the taste component. CD36 and GPR120 are putative receptors, but may not fully account for the totality of the range of sensations elicited by fatty acids. The sensory quality of long‐chain NEFA is not adequately characterized by commonly accepted taste primary qualities and has been termed oleogustus. There is marked individual variability in sensitivity to the taste of NEFA prompting hypotheses of genetic and environmental determinants. Though …

Identified Research Directions For Using Manufacturing Knowledge Earlier In The Product Lifecycle, Thomas D. Hedberg Jr, Nathan W. Hartman, Phil Rosche, Kevin Fischer

Computer Graphics Technology Faculty Publications

Design for manufacturing (DFM), especially the use of manufacturing knowledge to support design decisions, has received attention in the academic domain. However, industry practice has not been studied enough to provide solutions that are mature for industry. The current state of the art for DFM is often rule-based functionality within computer-aided design (CAD) systems that enforce specific design requirements. That rule-based functionality may or may not dynamically affect geometry definition. And, if rule-based functionality exists in the CAD system, it is typically a customisation on a case-by-case basis. Manufacturing knowledge is a phrase with vast meanings, which may include knowledge …

Theoretical Estimation Of PkA'S Of Pyrimidines And Related Heterocycles, Rachael Ann Wessner

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Pyrimidines and related heterocycles are an important class of compounds with a wide variety of applications. As a result, there is great interest in the chemical properties of these compounds, specifically their pKa's. Despite the importance of these compounds their reported pKa's are often only approximations or are completely absent from literature. Experimentally measuring pKa's can be challenging, especially if the pKa is below zero. Alternatively, pKa's can be estimated computationally using a Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR). However, most of the compounds included in this study exist as two or more forms that arise from tautomerism. Tautomerism complicates the estimation …
