Family-Clinician Communication Within Critical Care Settings: Unraveling The Complex And Valuing The Hidden, Joseph C. Manning, Jos M. Latour

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Internationally, advances in medicine and technology have led to a growing repertoire of interventions that can save or prolong lives of critically ill infants and children. Key developments include: resuscitation practices; continuous monitoring methods; ventilation devices and strategies; and artificial organs [1]. Interventions have also been developed to support parents and enhance communication between families and pediatric critical care professionals. In neonatology the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP) has proven to be beneficial in supporting both infants and parents [2, 3]. A range of communication strategies have been developed and tested, such as audio-recording parent—physician consultations, and …

What Future For The Global Aid For Trade Initiative? Towards An Assessment Of Its Achievements And Limitations, William Hynes, Patrick Holden Jan 2016

What Future For The Global Aid For Trade Initiative? Towards An Assessment Of Its Achievements And Limitations, William Hynes, Patrick Holden

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

As with any form of contemporary global governance, the impact of the global Aid for Trade Initiative (2006) has been mixed. However, to dismiss it as a failure would be premature. The co‐ordination system established was based on best‐practice techniques of governance in a diverse non‐hierarchical environment, such as the international development community. This form of co‐operation cannot overcome global economic and political asymmetries, but it can be effective in several respects. In particular, the Initiative led to increased funding for AfT and kick‐started a range of initiatives and technical advances; while the monitoring process has evolved significantly to give …

The Role Of Oil In Economic Development -The Case Of Libya (1970-2010)., Ali Hassan Elwerfelli

Plymouth Business School Theses

Abstract The objectives of this thesis are to: (1) examine if the resource curse exists in the context of Libya; (2) assess the role of institutions in avoiding or minimising the resource curse, and; (3) evaluate institutional and economic reforms required, and the best options to diversify the economy from oil, hence avoid the resource curse in Libya. To achieve these, three approaches are applied, (i) a three country comparative analysis; (ii) Libya country-level time-series analysis, and; (iii) institutional descriptive analysis. This thesis uses time-series data and annual datasets covering 1970-2010. Johansen’s co-integration is used to establish the long-run equilibrium …

Arab Management Practices From A Trust Perspective - The Case Of International Companies In Morocco, Imane El Hakimi

Plymouth Business School Theses

This research contributes to our understanding of trust in the international business environment, exploring the development of trust, and the influence of culture, structures and hierarchies, and international business communications. The focus is on the management of employees working in foreign-owned, international businesses operating in Morocco. With few notable and very valuable exceptions, there has been very little research exploring the Arab approach to management and even fewer pieces of research focus on the development of trust in this context. A qualitative research approach was employed, as so little is understood about the context and the phenomenon. A total of …

An Econometric Analysis Of Oil/Non-Oil Sectors And Economic Growth In The Gcc: Evidence From Saudi Arabia And The Uae, Ahmed Ali S Alodadi Jan 2016

An Econometric Analysis Of Oil/Non-Oil Sectors And Economic Growth In The Gcc: Evidence From Saudi Arabia And The Uae, Ahmed Ali S Alodadi

Plymouth Business School Theses

As a depletable resource oil is a useful source of economic growth, but may not be relied upon for long-term sustainable development. Diversification from oil is needed to achieve this. This research applies three models to examine the most important determinants of oil and non-oil sector economic growth in two of the largest economies in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), namely Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The empirical analysis applies the Johansen approach and ECM to access the relationship between all variables, both in the long and short-term. Given the governments’ determination to reduce dependence on oil income, this study …

Advancing The 3rs In Regulatory Ecotoxicology: A Pragmatic Cross-Sector Approach, N Burden, R Benstead, M Clook, I Doyle, P Edwards, Sk Maynard, K Ryder, D Sheahan, G Whale, Egmond R Van, Jr Wheeler, Th Hutchinson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The ecotoxicity testing of chemicals for prospective environmental safety assessment is an area in which a high number of vertebrates are used across a variety of industry sectors. Refining, reducing, and replacing the use of animals such as fish, birds, and amphibians for this purpose addresses the ethical concerns and the increasing legislative requirements to consider alternative test methods. Members of the UK-based National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) Ecotoxicology Working Group, consisting of representatives from academia, government organizations, and industry, have worked together over the past 6 y to provide evidence bases …

Pharmacy

The ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of Markhamia zanzibarica (Bignoniaceae) was tested for its cytotoxic activity against human cervical adenocarcinoma cell line (HeLa). It showed a potent effect with an IC50 of 9.68 μg/ml compared to Doxorubicin (7.28 μg/ml). The fractions obtained from the successive partitioning of the total extract, were tested against the same cell line; the results revealed that n-hexane extract was the most potent 9.23 μg/ml, followed by ethyl acetate, butanol and chloroform fractions with IC50 of 21.2, 22.4 and 49.6 μg/ml, respectively. Column chromatography led to the isolation of oleanolic acid (1), ursolic acid (2) …
